One of the best explanations of this procedure. Of ten times we see leaks underneath a V6 Honda/Acura vehicle and don’t where to look. It’s often this VTEC solenoid and the valve cover gaskets that need some TLC.
Thank you for the video. The repair took me about 3 hours. 1 of which was the electrical connector on the bracket. I couldn't get the second gray piece off to save my life. New gasket is in didn't fire it up yet but fingers crossed
Great video! There is also another gasket on the solenoid on top of that assembly and an O-ring on the VTEC switch. If you're replacing the gasket, it would good to change those, too. Just my two-cents. Thanks for the video!
Man, you are one awesome dude. Thank you very much for this post. Most people show the upper spool valve above the alternator. Mine was below making me think it was my oil pan leaking.
The most difficult part is unplugging one of two plastic plugs so that is does not dangle and become completely detached from the plastic fitting plug-Do this first before unbolting the 3-main metric bolts. The other plug that has the green plastic is fairly easy to reach and unplug but the other is not and its a real pain in the ass to reach. Also the green plug and be loosened up just below with a common open end wrench and there is a small o-ring inside there. Purchase the gasket set $18 and it will have all 3-gaskets. The main larger gasket with filter is what hardens like a pretzel and causes the oil leak not the o-ring or other smaller gasket.
Working this same repair right now, and am stuck trying to unplug the other plug that is part of the solenoid. The How did you unplug that second plug? Tabs were not releasing the connection as they did in the video. My 2002 Odyssey plugs look different.
For anyone who is curious, this can be done without removing the wheel. I changed the gasket on my 03 Odyssey with it on ramps. That being said, I don't recommend it, it's a much tighter and all around more difficult job without the wheel off.
I just did that and dropped one of the three bolts, so put a top and bottom one in and reversed off the ramp and got the 3rd bolt and put it on, I kind of regret starting it as some oil leaked in the few seconds I ran it. But all three bolts on with the new seal I'm thinking it's good
Well I ended up doing it on Saturn vue 04 the gasket was broken on one side didn't have to disconnect anything did it all connected just didn't let it hang 3bolts came right off changed the oil and everything and no more nasty leak. Next is the valve cover gasket
Thank you for easily showing the process, just finished resealing this on my 2010 MDX because it was going through a quart every 3 weeks from dripping/leaking. Advanced auto sells a whole seal kit for $20 lucky me I got the last one in stock at my local store! part no. TCS 46026
I got the last one in town also but realised it was fel pro, probably ok for this easy to access gasket but I returned it and ordered mahle instead from Amazon
I did the gasket changes but got them from ebay fake ones from china came and is still leaking ima have to buy original solenoid at this point dont wanna risk getting original gasket t Just to find out i need a whole new solenoid
Actually there's another solenoid above the alternator that also leaks and the oil drips right down into the alternator causing it to fail. Here's one video just so you know the location. YMMV depending on the exact year and model of J35. th-cam.com/video/m1-2zYi9euM/w-d-xo.html
Yea I was confused when I clicked on this. I literally just did the same thing in mine like 30 minutes ago and in AutoZones system it's called an oil adapter gasket so that took me a minute lol
Yes, put the year model in the description and the title of the video. I'm wondering if my 2016 Odyssey is the same. Isn't there another valve on top of the motor with a similar gasket? Spool valve. Are there two of these?
Why you call this part vvt. I understand that vvt is for variable valve timing sensor, what has to do with the oil filter housing or why you guys call them vvt ?
There is a gasket in the same area oil filter housing. They are prone to leak. 3rd gen Odyssey 05 to 07 VVT assembly is the rear head on the drivers side. 08 to 10 its on the front head passenger side.
Similar, for 3rd gen it's the oil filter housing gasket, there is a sensor attached. There were changes in the 3rd gen 05 to 07 then 08 to 10. I think most 2nd gen are like this video.
Yea, i didnt drain oil at first, the only thing i did was drain the oil filter before, just cause i knew id be cleaning the inside of the housing..i decided to drain the oil after to just complete the oil change since i had the oil filter off.
@@backyardchevy328 ahhh I want to do this but i have less than 1,000 miles on the oil. Think it can be done without removing the wheel? I usually drive one side onto a high sidewalk (my fake lift lol)
Well im sure it can be done but will it make it more difficult im not sure lol..guess if u try it, u can let me know if u were able to and if it was worth doing it that way lol
@@CRAPO2011 it'll be MUCH easier and WAY less headache if you take the wheel off! I appreciate this video - not many videos I found about this specific part. I accidentally busted a bolt to the vtec solenoid when replacing it, so I have to pull this off in order to extract the bolt. I can tell you from experience, it's REALLY difficult to get to without removing the wheel and splash guard!
@@DwEeBiT22 Iol, was just thinking about this repair is I havent done it yet. Now your putting fear me by telling me you busted one of the bolts. Ive been thinking of ordering the solenoid o rings also since i believe they have to be disconnected anwyay
does the same process apply for 2015 honda accord sport? is it located in the same spot? I'm losing lots of oil from the same area and other issue like losing engine power, car won't start, engine reviving while idling.

Thanks for mentioning that detail with u on that
The fel pro gasket set comes with both of those O rings.

Hello Backyard Chevy,
Unable to get this gasket, can I use Permatex, Ultra Black, gasket maker after cleaning old one to reuse? Thank you!

great vid, thx
Can this leak go down to the exhaust and make it smoke up ???
It is possible, but most likely that would be an oil leak from a different source..possibly oil pan or rear seal
Valve cover gasket is a common leak that drips on the exhaust too.
It's called the oil filter housing gasket. Not oil spool valve gasket.
Yea I was confused when I clicked on this. I literally just did the same thing in mine like 30 minutes ago and in AutoZones system it's called an oil adapter gasket so that took me a minute lol
I am assuming this applies to 2000-2004 Honda Odyssey vans ?
1999-2004
There is a gasket there on them, but they don't have VVT so there is no solenoid and so on.
what is a fair price for this service ?
