The unboxing experience with the Mecool is positive! You may have watched the previous review of the original M8s which also was a wonderful TV Box.
The user guide immediately refers to the remote which supports voice commands! Please note that the voice enabled remote is optional.
The M8s Pro L - I have to admit - naming here is a bit annoying - looks great and feels great and has the same design as the rest of the M8s series. It is powered by relatively decent hardware - the best to date AMlogic octo core CPU, 3GB RAM 16 or 32GB ROM, good video processor.
Connectivity wise it is nothing too impressive, offering only AV out, LAN and HDMI ports, 2x USB 2.0 and microSD slot. In fact this is exactly all I need, because I usually pass the sound through HDMI over my TV. Some people prefer SPDIF though, which is not available with this model.
And so - we have an excellent starter pack.
Let me switch the scenery to software. This is where this TV box truly shines! Android TV has its own glamour - with convenient launcher and a lot of standardized options. I immediately explored the menus - the well know android features, grouped in a way that is easy to access. And everything important is just a few clicks away! No bloatware, no lagging, no frame skipping - looks like the software is well optimized.
If you are a fan of Netflix - this is the right device for you! Among the few models that can stream videos in maximum resolution. The rest of the players that are not Android TV certified, are able to play 480p only, which is looks quite horrible on a big screen. Because Netflix uses google Widevine certification to protect copyrighted content from recording - we need a device, which has L1 - like the m8s pro l. Most of the anbdroid tv boxes either have none, or only L3, which allows SD quality.
I loved the fact there is preinstalled Aptoide - a Google Play alternative which is in some ways even better than the official store app - mostly because it doesn’t spy you that much and doesn’t need hundreds of services to do its job.
Here is some data from Aida 64 - you can find more about the CPU frequency, sensor availability, even thermal info. Root is of course not there, and note that if you root the box, you will lose the Widevine certification compliance. And let’s face it - google has changed android so much, that rooting has no longer the significance it used to…
The next test was geekbench - results were decent and we can put the M8s Pro l among the quickest devices based on the S912 CPU.
Turning the device into a gaming station is a great idea! All I had to do is to add my Bluetooth Xiaomi gamepad. I have tried many different games, and everything remained smooth, without lag and usually with more details.
With one word - this device is impressive! Starting at just 70bucks, you get the ultimate multimedia experience, with best-in-class performance and even Netflix at full power.

1.It is not a certified box
2. Netflix does not play on it at all if you found a way then 4K will never be supported.
3. It lags a lot of times.
4. No google cast.

Netflix works fine. There already are a few versions of the app that override the Widevine certificartion, and you can have it in full resolution.
THe lag you may reduce by offloading some of the CPU tasks like animations - go to developer options and reduce them to 0.5, or entirely disable them.
As for the updates - there were a few available throughout 2018, but unlikely to happen in 2019.

I have sent off for a fan to cool it down,it only runs for an hour max then gives up.I am not very tech minded but I will try a factory reset.I have had a few of these boxes over the years and this has to be the worst that i have had. Thanks for the message I will give your ideas a go
Till now I at least watched dozens of review of this box (as well lower 905 version) - none of them shows or tells this much details about Widevine support L1 at the settings location and why someone does not root it etc - Very much informative and excellent script writing without wasting any time - Best review of this box in the whole YT.

Thank You for the response - I asked because I was being told Andriod TV OS doesn't allow Amazon Prime Video to be loaded...but recently came to know there are Nvidia Shield apk of the same exists and if it runs on this box at least 720p resolution it will be the most VFM box out there.
Arijit - I haven't forgotten your request - it has been a busy week and couldn't make my way to the box yet. Doing my best to get it these days.
Took me a while to get some time with the box , and here's what we got:
- the first app tested was Prime Video apk from Aptoide. Installation was ok, it opens and can show the Amazon Prime Videos interface. You can browse the content. Unfortunately when you play videos back, the app crashes. In fact you can watch the whole movie with the error that it has crashed. But that would be annoying...
- the second app tested is the one that you suggested - extracted from Nvidia Shield - and it works without issues. Only disadvantage is the lack of air mouse support - you hve to use mostly the navigation keys. I cannot rate what the quality is - looks more like 720p, but is overall quite good. So the Nvidia shield extracted app is fine and you wan stream amazon prime videos as long as you have an account.

Sometimes when you touch the remote control, the dialog box "Cannot access TH-cam, please try again later" will appear. Once canceled, the video will stop and you need to start again.

Hi Arkos39, the gamepad used is a very old model manufactured by Xiaomi. It is off sales for more than two years. Right now there is a new Xiaomi-branded gamepad which seems to be better, and is again supporting bluetooth - www.tomtop.com/p-pag0010.html

How is the WiFi performance.
What if I have a movie with audio in DTS or Dolby format? Will it play with audio or without any audio?
Will it work with 5.1 surround sound?
Does it have USB write permission? (meaning, can I connect a USB and I can copy content to it without making it an internal storage.. asking because mi box cannot do this)
I will have to check about each one of these questions. Most likely the audio is supported. I will check about the USB. Hopefully I will get your answers next week.

If you need android TV - then this one is better. If you don't care about distribution of Android (and that mostly is for getting Netflix and Amazon Video in HD) - then you can get any of these.
Make sure to check the devices with the new S905X2 - it is as powerful as the S912 and has a bit more features.
Can the Bluetooth Voice Remote replace with Infrared Remote? I don´t mind it the voice control not working as long as it can navigate with IR Remote Control

how do I apply the leanback style homescreen for my M8S PRO L, because my homescreen looks exactly like the regular pro version...I bought one cause I thought it has a leanback homescreen style...I don't understand 😓..

I just ordered this box. I really hope it's as good as all the claims I am seeing. I just got a Abox A4 with voice and it lasted less than 24 hours!(no, I'm not kidding. Got it yesterday and it died today) I'm really hoping the claim of having the REAL Android TV OS on it is true because all the other boxes I see people are saying it's not real, just a clone wanna-be. And the specs on this box are really good too.
Having a non tv-os is sometimes a benefit, sometimes a disadvantage. In time this has become one of the most popular models, and it deserves its good reputation. Hopefully you will like it :-)

I think the W is newer' But note that "newer" doesn't mean better or faster.

Hi Vijay - do the apps appear as "installed"? If so - maybe the launcher sin't showing them. You may try a different launcher and see how that goes.
As for Chrome - this is really weird - try to install it from play store

I have looked every where and cant seem to find what I want.
Just wondering if you could help me out here? I purchased a second box 16Gb one but hasn't got the Nvidia shield interface and I want to install the latest one on it with the Nvidia shield look like my other one.
I tried the Nexus from Magendanz, one but its no good as the wifi no longer works and its stand alone without any apps.
Have you got a link where I can download the latest image?
I use the USB burning tool with the terminal installed on the box to do it.

I cant believe it but after trying 4 different firmware's the very last one worked! and its the latest! and its exactly what I was looking for! and all is working! with Mecool logo on start up too.. no 3rd party logos crap.

You can get a better email client. the App Nine is a great option.
give it a couple of months and you won't be as pleased with it .it will start overheating and just freeze,you need a fan to cool it down(it really dont get that hot before it decides to quit on you).good luck

Have you examined the CPU utilization? Sounds like something is stressing the CPU a lot. Did you try a factory reset?
Unfortunately most Mecool boxes have a issue with overheating and freezing. I have had 3 mecool boxes eventually overheat and freeze and I had to use a mini usb fan to cool off the box, 2 of the boxes began to overheat in less than 30 days so I was able to return the boxes but the third box began overheating after a few months. I highly recommend to stay far far away from mecool boxes because at some point down the line they will freeze up on you, what makes matters worse is that overheating and freezing is a known issue with these boxes and has been for sometime and they can't seem to fix the issue

@@mtdub4 Which are the models that you've tried? They indeed had worse quality in the past, but I've never had any of these issues.
Right now the KM8 is running as an online TV STB and works almost 24/7 in streaming mode...

I see everybody talking very good about this device, and I bought one, but it keeps dropping the WiFi, and the router is in front of my room. Also, I tried an option I saw online removing a file that apparently solve the issue with the WiFi, and I have reseted to the default twice, but it does not work. Any help here.
What is your encryption protocol? Is it WEP?

Try measuring the coverage with this app - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet
If the coverage is OK, then you may try changing the SSID channel.
@@TechMishka Thanks for your help, I'm sorry it took me a while to reply. It show signal 56% with this App from the point were the TV Box is to the router. Should I try changind the WiFi channels? I do not have problems with four laptops and my son's Xbox in the living room which is further.
@@abasilis I have seen similar situations in the past. And that can be super annoying, because you have to change something working just because of the TVbox.
Still - if you are interested in trying - you may try to change the channel - will be the most harmless option.
Also, you may try to temporarily disable the encryption (password) of the wifi - just for the sake of the test.
If that won't work - try to see how it is with a hotspot from your smartphone.
If that doesn't work - think about returning it, as it might be a hardware-related issue.

After Months of enjoying Netflix in full HD, Netflix has finally blocked my Mecool M8S pro L in the main google play app. it comes up with error! Netflix has encountered an error. Retrying in 59 seconds Code:NW-6-404
I tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it,
Preformed factory settings restore. you name it I tried it.
Can only use the Netflix from that Aptoide app but it DOES NOT play Netflix in Full HD!
I called Netflix and they recon that there is a problem with that tv box and couple others now and they are working on fixing the issue, which I do not believe as it happened to my other TV box I had and the problem was never fixed.
So what the hell do I do now? Cancel my subscription and go back to downloading torrents?
Hey Dorian, that's quite bad news :( Interesting to figure out if that is only for your account or it is on a global level.
Most likely they have upgraded something (guess security). Perhaps waiting for a few days will make sense. Could be that there will be a solution somewhere. I'd keep an eye on freaktab forums.

Netflix told me over the phone its not my account its the model of that device.
Please test yours and let me know if you get the same problem.
If you don't get the problem at first It will happen eventually as mine came all of a sudden without even updating it. then updated it etc.. as mention and same problem.

Hi. Greetings from Romania. I am new in the TV Box branch. I am planning to buy one budget TV box for my parrents. They want a box that is moving very well, with a good firmware. Most of the time they will use it for watching full HD movies online and time to time for my brother and me to play. Also if is possible to Browse the internet via Chrome.It will be great as well if we could connect an airpad mouse and 2 gamepad conntrollers for games. It will be connected to a internet cable connection. The box should have a display clock as well, if possible.
Could you please recommend me one? Budget is max 70$. And could you please recommend a cheap/good controller and airpad mouse? And I have one question. Is it possible to watch Netflix full Hd with these TV boxes after the Netflix patch is installed? After watching your videos my mind is at Mecool M8S PRO L or Beelink GT1 Ultimate 3GB DDR4 + 32GB . Hi Vlad! Greetings back to Romania. Please excuse my delayed answer - not sure why, but youtube has decided to classify this post as spam and I discovered and unlocked it just now.
It looks like you have researched a lot - I was indeed about to recommend you the M8S Pro L. The GT 1 is also a good box, although I have not tested it myself yet.
THe M8S Pro L can run netflix in HD, and is overall very well balanced. You can install pretty much anything - so having clock, or any kind of preferred style is a possibility.
As for controller - I still use the old Minix A2 Lite, which in my opinion is too outdated, but I haven't checked for anything newer.
COnnecting and HDD will be fine - you can store files and run a torrent server if you like to. I've always liked transmission :-)

@@vladbularca8731 I don't really know about the DTS passthrough and whether that will work fine... And overall - it is hard for me to recommend one. You may try checking with Chigz (ChigzTechReviews) - he maintains a super-duper-cool-list of tvbox specs and may have tried some more DTS devices.
If you are looking for Netflix capable box - the m8s Pro L is still among the best. There haven't been newer and better CPUs (except rockchip, but they turn out to be not that quick) and the market is now a little saturated.

I thought you said in another comment that the Aptoide Amazon app has an error message when you try to play anything. How do you get the Nvidia Shield Amazon app that you’re saying runs fine?
That is correct - the one from Aptoide is crashing. I found one that is extracted from nvidia shield and got it from a post in reddit. It had a slightly different version.

Tech4All I'm assuming mx player because I havnt downloaded any other I just launch the app my family cinema and its bad totally bad. I tried to put Google launcher on there and it doesn't show up I can't Evan the default settings half of my screen is off as well. My t v is Panasonic Vieira 50inch. I paid 90dollers for something I can't use. The screen access is weird can't see the full screen too. I'm on my wits end as my gf says I'm a dum ass I should be able to use it lol. But I really would like sum help

Yes it runs Android TV OS just like the Shield and MI Box but you must buy the one that includes Voice Remote. If it doesn't include Voice Remote it won't come with Android TV OS.
Is possible to unroot this box tv to read Netflix in full hd ?
Hi Jean, despite the root it works fine with Netflix and it is FullHD. And sure - unrooting is always possible :-)

Hi Jean - there is no limit for questions :-) I always try to help as much as I can.
If memories are not too bad - it should have supersu out of the box. WHich means that you may be able to use the supersu app, which can temporarily suspend root (without even reinstalling it). Alternatively you may try to flash Magisk - it is root with extras and you also have a feature to disable it temporarily.
Netflix has killed these low budget tvboxes. Now just Netflix 480 :(
More and more people are reporting this issue. We will monitor xda and reddit for more info, perhaps there will be a workaround.

Please note though. If you ever decide to do a factory reset you will need to apply that fix again after updating Netflix! as I tried it. and fixed it again.

I find that the video judders on Netflix on this box
Mine is working fine now no problem at 1080. you need to Apply the Netflix fix as I said to fix it. don't use the red Netflix Ap from Aptoid use the white one with red writing for TV Android!

Go to XDA developers forums - there is a modded version of the Netflix App enforcing Full HD and it works fine.
can you install any popular Pure Android custom rom (ex- Nano Nexus ROM from Magendanz ,link > freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-support/amlogic-based-tv-players/s912/mecool/firmware-roms/686034-rom-mecool-m8s-pro-l-stock-nano-nexus-rom-android-7-1) & still retain the Widevine L1 keys of the box (can still view Netflix Full HD & TH-cam 4k after the custom Rom flash) & also retain the Full voice functionality of the voice remote control. Please , please do check that out !
