The Mecool M8S Pro L TV box is one of the best box I have tested in along time. Most boxes tend to fall short in some critical areas, but the M8S pro L succeeded in these areas. The areas where this box fell short, it does not affect or take away from any of key features that makes this box such a great TV box. My selling point for this box is root access, Netflix in HD, good movie streaming via APKs, TH-cam in 4K, good Android gaming, and gamepad key mapping works perfectly.

I have this box and my only issue is that it's been freezing lately but that may be because that it's not an official version of android tv. I say this because it's not listed on the android tv site.
Is your box getting hot? I just got mine today..so far so good..if its hot buy a laptop cooler..and put that on top to cool it down

You're right on point TC. All this box needs is a nav bar to make it even better. In this box they found a way to make Android TV work.
Great review as usual. I thought I had finally found the box that met all my needs (largely gathered by watching a lot of reviews by you :) But one question please. You stated it only supports 32 bits of ABI so not 64 bits. How important is that for someone who's main interest is streaming movies (Kodi) etc and a bit of gaming?
It's not important at all, streaming movies is not affected by its 32 ABIs limitation.

Quick questions:
1) does voice control work on non-Android TV OS? [Like a Beeline, H96, Zidoo, etc.]
2) What good launchers are out there for the above noted? Would you say Android TV OS is better?
3) Between an Android TV OS device like this Mecool M8s Pro L and the non-android TV OS device what is the difference with apps? Are you only allowed apps for compatible with android TV or can any APK be loaded? Will I be able to load an ad-free youtube such as youtube vance or newpipe? Is there an option for ad-free youtube?

1) To get voice control to work you need Android TV OS or Android 8.1 those support it
2) I personally don't like Android TV OS, however it does allow TH-cam, and Netflix to show in HD and 4K once the DRM level 1 Google Widevine is enabled. It restricts what apps you can install, unlike the full version of android. You have to side-load all your favorite apps
3) That you would have to try on the fly. Some apps will not work on Android TV. You can install most app via APKs
how do I apply the leanback style homescreen for my M8S PRO L, because my homescreen looks exactly like the regular pro version...I bought one cause I thought it has a leanback homescreen style...I don't understand 😓..

because of the overheating problem m8s pro L has.
Well what you have to take into consideration is the availability of support for the boxes. To me the Beelink GT1 ultimate has better hardware, but it was also manufactured a year or two ago and there might not be continued updated firmware for that box. As apps change so to must your firmware. If you own a GT1 ultimate you would impressed with its performance, but the DRM support and updated to handle certain 4K videos may be lacking. However, it has been a while since I looked at the GT1 ultimate or even checked to see if there was any 2018 firmware updates. The Mecool M8S Pro L on the other hand is the new kid on the block with DRM support the play Netflix in HD, and supported codecs for playing 4K formats and firmware updated would be around for some time until they discontinue producing it. The heat can be an issue but I simply solve this by using a passive cooling fan.
Thank u for the support, i have one more question if you can help, for example, m8s pro l has a 64 bit architecture procesor but a 32 system os, on august 2019 google will force developer to transit on 64 platform of app, how can it be solved in the futer by an update firmware ?? Good point, the folks over at Tanix have a firmware page, so when that time reaches maybe there will be an update.With those changes coming is best to wait before buying a new box.

Can you figure out why Mobdro ( Both Startec and Bliss) will not work on Kodi on this box? It works perfectly on the APKs on this box but not on Kodi. It runs on Kodi on all of my other boxes but not this M8s pro L.
Sometimes when you touch the remote control, the dialog box "Cannot access TH-cam, please try again later" will appear. Once canceled, the video will stop and you need to start again.
how to activate mouse function with remote control in order to have mouse cursor like you using in your video
The voice remote does not have an air mouse feature. In the video I am using a regular PC mouse, that's only for editing my videos though. I use a Bluetooth air mouse or mini touchpad keyboard

Sub tiles for Terrarium, yes it does.
TV Box Stop thank you for your fast reply. Terrarium auto downloads .srt subtitles in the android device and then auto plays the movie and the srt with a player of my choice, like mx player. Let's say I want to play a movie with external subtitles from a stick. I guess it's the same thing?

TV Box Stop that's great because it concerned me a lot. Some boxes don't read external subs and this one doesn't mention at all if it supports it or not in gearbest page.
Hold up there, I stand corrected. That is not confirmed, I know Terrarium TV reads subs but from external sources it has to be in the right format for it to read. I have not tested this myself so I don't want to mislead you.

Yes it can hot during gaming and 4K videos. Most TV boxes get hot anyway with the exception of a few. A cooling fan keeps it cool similar to a laptop.

Can the Bluetooth Voice Remote replace with Infrared Remote? I don´t mind it the voice control not working as long as it can navigate with IR Remote Control

You can only pair a remote to this box if the remote is a Bluetooth remote you purchased separately. Your Sharp and Panasonic remotes will not work unless they have Bluetooth paring.
The Box can also run 5GHz WiFi.

It does not have any dedicated app installer app. However, the box will install any apk once you click on it from the file browser.

I basically love to stream live football ⚽ matches, and I use terrarium tv. Will this box be good? I have a fire stick, but most mobile links won't stream well (stuttering a lot), but they always work well without stuttering on my galaxy s9+. Also if you can please recommend any other fantastic box or this is the best. Thanks.
Yes it could do the job but you have to side-load the apps you mentioned. or use Aptoide, not the one that comes on the box, the one you have to download and install for yourself.
can i watch 3D movies via this box ? i have downloaded a 3D video and used an inbuilt player but it says your box does not support 3d. Is it so, box description says other way. pls clarify.
I guess you'll never know unless you try it. Well I 'm sorry to say I don't have a 3D television to test 3D movies so please pardon me for that. I never really tried to run a 3D video on a TV box before, so I'll have to test that in the future.
Thanks for the reply. So far i have failed to play 3D movies with this box. just wonder if that really requires 3D compatible TV for the playback. I use the movie player which has 3D setting inbuilt with this box but it throws an error "this box does not support 3D"

hi, I recently purchased the mecool m8s pro l ,its good but I am facing problems in installing apps in it,as it does not show all apps and also dont have chrome too.

Hi to solve your problem is simple. Using a PC open Chrome browser and search for "Chrome APK" download it onto a flash drive and plugit into the TV box. Using the file browser on the TV box click on the APK file and install it. This will give you chrome on the TV box (use a regular USB mouse to make this process easy). The same applies for any other app you want that cannot be found on the Android TV version of the play store. APK is the file format of any Android app. Once chrome is on the TV box you do not need a PC anymore, simply download any APK directly on to the TV box.

Yes Derek, I did replace by batteries with no luck. I have tried re-pairing as well. Device is not detecting since un-pairing.

No the voice remote that comes with the box does not have air mouse feature. In the video I am using a regular mouse as I do in all my videos to complete my reviews. Android TV OS is not to mouse friendly and many areas of the OS you would find that you cannot fully use a mouse and only the voice remote works better.

All of you regular apps from the full Android OS will work on Android TV OS, do not fear. The only issue is that it will not be on the "Android TV Play Store" you will have to sideload them using APks on via flash drive or via the Aptoide app store. Also, the Aptoide TV store that comes on the box is a waste, sideload the Aptoide app store APK from their website and you're good to go and Install any app you like. Any regular air mouse will work just fine.

In conclusion, if i need to buy an additional Air Mouse remote, to use all the apps. correctly, can that Air Mouse have also a mini keyboard with backlight? You think that could be a better choice? It all depends on what your hands are more comfortable with. I like the air mouse because it is faster to navigate with, just wave the remote around and the mouse cursor moves like a regular mouse and just press OK to click. Whereas the mini touchpad keyboard can be used for gaming and keys are easier and faster to press, (no air mouse) but touchpad mouse. It's what suits you best.

Download from the Google Play store yes, play just like on a tablet no, you have to use a keymapping app for swipe and double touch functions.

I bought one of these back in June and it works great except for some reason Netflix keep getting this error message every time . I've uninstalled and reinstalled Netflix several times and I still keep getting this error NW-6-404 how can I fix this and can this box read and play files from usb 3.0 drives?

@@TKTubee this TV box is great and the wi fi connection is great .I had been using it for last 2 months and recieved an update a few days back.So can buy it.From TH-cam to Netflix everything runs smoothly but Amazon prime video doesn't run due to ongoing tussel.Its antutu score is App 46000 which is good.
Sunil Rana I owned this box since last July. The voice remote gone bad on the second week itself. Now I’m using my tv remote to run the box. And shows some glitches intermittently in sound and picture which gets corrected by a restart though. I really doubt how long this will run.

Netflix won't work out of the box for me, emits an error code. I've noted that this wasn't an issue in your video, therefore, have to reasonably believe mine is an isolated incident, or have you heard of this problem before? Can you point me in the direction of a resolve? Thanks.

I have had the same problem! Every time I have tried to watch my Netflix programs it indicates that Netflix is installed, the Netflix logo comes up, then I get a -100 error message and will not work. Also, it seems that Amazon Prime video is not supported. None of this was indicated prior to purchase, or I would not have wasted so much time on a device that does not support my programs, and paid over $100.00 for. Does work great with TH-cam however. Also is not supporting my Google play. It,s going back immediate and i,m replacing it with a Roku, which i,ve never had any issues with at all.

After Months of enjoying Netflix in full HD, Netflix has finally blocked my Mecool M8S pro L in the main google play app. it comes up with error! Netflix has encountered an error. Retrying in 59 seconds Code:NW-6-404
I tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it,
Preformed factory settings restore. you name it I tried it.
Can only use the Netflix from that Aptoide app but it DOES NOT play Netflix in Full HD!
I called Netflix and they recon that there is a problem with that tv box and couple others now and they are working on fixing the issue, which I do not believe as it happened to my other TV box I had and the problem was never fixed.
So what the hell do I do now? Cancel my subscription and go back to downloading torrents?

OK your 4K TV has the required DRM support to show Google TV, Netflix, and other premium services. This box used to play Netflix in 4K but after Netflix updated their encryption the box lost the ability to play in 4K. There was a patch released later on to fix the issue but I haven't touched this box since June last year so i am not sure going on with it now. Have you ever performed a firmware update on a TV box before? I believe an update would fix your issues.

Yes you can run Skype, but because this is not a mobile device such as a cellphone you may have to use a web scan code to activate it to your cellphone number.

I am sorry to tell you that you did not say anything about the sound. It has very bad sound. When it's get heat 🔥 it a little bit get slow function. I try Ethernet and 2. 4 +5.1 all very very low. Which is bad. The remote control by it self not enough to control the box. You need other remote. No one of you tuber explain any box how you do with the box like the apps in how it works or system. How to install chrome for an example. In my opinion this box not worth it.
I did mention about the WiFi th-cam.com/video/nZ1yoUkANQY/w-d-xo.html, I didn't notice any sound issues may be I was not paying attention enough. I know the voice remote doesn't work everywhere and it lacks air mouse function. I think I covered that somewhere, maybe on the website. To install chrome, Go to a PC or laptop and search "Chrome APK" download the APK file to a flash drive and insert it to the box. Open the file manager on the box and click on the APK to install it. It's called side-loading, you can do this for any app not found on Android TV app store. Once you install Chrome, open it on the box and search for Aptoide. Download Aptoide directly to the box, here you can install any Google Play app. It's an app store workaround.
Sound? That will be based on your tv or soundbar Remote it does its Basic like the shield í have no issues at all for me its the second best then the nvidia obviously u are going to need a mouse remote to use for it as well other boxes does
