- kind of late in the game. I was asked to put my two cents in and see if a ride mechanic can determine if I can see why the show and animatronics of Tianas Bayou adventure over at Disneyworlds Magic Kingdom. Let's walkabout the wet animatronics and ride faults.
Am I the only person who loves older animatronics like it’s a small world, tiki room, splash mountain and haunted mansion. I love how simple yet beautiful they are!

Another thing too, there is less animatronics! On splash mountain there was so many figures and sets to look at all around you on both sides. Tiana’s bayou has so many dark spots and empty scenes with screens. The animatronics don’t speak that much too, they say cheesy catch phrases “I’m asking them all to join the party, they can play! No doubt!” Nothing is giving a story. We need to find a band but then the band 2 seconds later is around the corner with Tiana. It feels so empty.

This is another shining example of how Disney went from totally perfecting something to having a very loose grasp of the the idea. The one part of splash mountain that always seems to time itself perfectly with the passing vehicles is the first appearance of Brer Rabbit with brer terrapin, the boats always seem to perfectly line up to him singing the line “I’m looking for a little more adventure” even thought it’s most definitely part of a loop and not a triggered scene. It’s that sort of grasp they had of timing, loop length, vehicle speed, guests attention window and earshot of speakers that made for an unrivalled polished performance imagineers today could only dream of. I think it’s also a brilliant demonstration of the reality that advancements in technology don’t always make something better, it’s the creativity that’s the key.
Ugh I so agree. Disney used to be about the story and details. They really lost the way.
The effort to go to a baseball field to film the intro is so simple yet so amazing.

Surprised to hear that boats piling up in the middle of the ride is by design. For me, that loses any immersion previously achieved, as my mind immediately starts guessing what's wrong, rather than focusing on the "show". Interesting information. Thanks for posting.
As a kid in the 80’s I got stuck on it’s a small world for 2 hours. They never stopped the dolls or the music. I can’t bring myself to go on the ride again.
Had a similar experience with Haunted Mansion, 1 hour.
I got stuck in Carousel of Progress and had to watch the same show scene about 3 or 4 times before it finally rotated to the next scene.
In this new ride, it suffers from this one problem: All style, but no substance.
Its that dang Briar Rabbit! Hes not happy with losing his home! Lol

Imo....Disney/Universal are THEME Parks where Cedar/Six Flags are Amusement Parks.... Theme parks focus on the immersion factor where amusement parks focus on the thrill

One of the many things Splash Mountain had going for it was the sense of movement, composition, and detail in every AA scene.
Even when the AA's weren't moving, or not functioning along their full range of movement - the scene worked because it was all composed like a single frame of animation, or a single comic book frame.
With Tiana's there is little like that going on at all.
The AA's HAVE to work.
We are dependent upon them for dialog, and a sense of kinetics.
Otherwise they are just creepy static figures.
I was laughing so hard when you described the attention span of a Disney Guest on a ride. It might have been unintentional (or maybe not) but it was spot on 😂

I personally believe that animatronics in these rides have gotten too complicated and advanced for their own good. Splash Mountain had primitive ones by today’s standards, but they served their purpose well enough to convey an immersive story filled with songs and scenery. Tianna’s animatronics are objectively better, but they lead to more downtime and the overall ride isn’t any better for their sophistication anyway because the story, songs, and scenery aren’t implement as well as Splash Mountain.
@@josephbrown9685 What I think is bad is how Tiana is supposed to be the star, yet the Louis animatronics look way better and far more life-like. When his are working, one could mistake them for someone dressed in a costume, but hers? Yikes. Have you seen the Zootopia ones in Shanghai? Those look freaking amazing compared to anything here, other than the Shaman from the Avatar boat ride.
@@englishatheart Fair enough, but I think Tianna’s animatronics are fine. The problem is only noticeable because they are being compared to Louis. If all of them were simpler, there’d maybe be less downtime. In a perfect scenario, I’d like to see all of them look as good as Louis AND be more reliable to keep the ride running more often, but at this point I think it’d be better to sacrifice some realism for reliability.
I swear they forget these mechanics have to work in high heat and high humidity for hours a day all year. These new additions just can't stand up to Florida.

They probably need it to be that strict because a lot of the guests will probably only ever visit the park once in their life (as opposed to local theme parks). So Disney and Universal wants to make sure people get the full experience every time

A little off topic, but the S.I.R animatronic from Alien Encounter's preshow is still the best animatronic Disney has ever made, and to this day impresses me more than modern day animatronics, including ones at other parks besides Disney. It probably helped the character was a robot, but everything just worked so fluidly.

Side issue: the hat box ghost at Orlando. They put it in a place that has a very narrow window of viewing and the loo takes a long time to do its thing. So you could conceivably ride the ride ten times and only actually see the effect once. 🤦🏻♂️ ( yes based on personal experience) that was poor planning in my opinion.

The animatronics breaking down indicates a clear sign that Disney made a big mistake re-theming Splash Mountain.
I'm almost positive the ride was not slowed down. The boats are backed up only before block section (drops and lifts). I think the reason there's more boats stackingup is because the dispatch time between vehicles in each block section is longer to accommade the triggered animations.

I've not been to WDW since Tiana's opened, but from previous visits one thing I always found with its predecessor, as well as other boat rides like Pirates or Small World, is that there was always a long queue of boats coming into the station. It always felt like they were running more boats than the loading procedure could handle and you'd often be backed up into the last scene. I was never sure if it was because they were over-optimistic about how fast boats could be dispatched, or if there was some other reason.

Speaking of power....at the park I used to work at, they added a big water rapids ride. The incoming 34.5kv service to the entire park was back by our warehouse. As they were expanding the HV switchgear to accommodate that new ride (and knowing that we had power issues before that ride was planned) I was talking to the power company's engineer about the total load on the service (both the incoming lines and existing switchgear that they were adding on to.) Before the new ride the gear was already loaded to 70-75% of max. After the new ride it went up to 85-90%. Not a big deal, right? Well industry standards for HV and MV switchgear is to load them at no more than 80% to allow room for the extra current from brownouts and surges to not damage the gear or trip the HV breakers. The original loading was considered to be at the limits of that older gear. Any bets on what happened shortly after the new ride was up?
I had moved to Northern Cali working at a music store when I got a call from our keyboard dept., which had a tv in a rack mount. They asked me "Didn't you used to work for xxxxx?" I said yeah. They said, you gotta come see this. On the news was that park's main switchgear in flames, with many trapped on rides, and the park's head engineer (who BTW yelled at me when I brought up that loading the main gear so high was a very bad idea) trying to shoo the news cameras away. Turns out a car hit a pole, which single-phased the entire area, including the park. The strain from all of the ride's motors trying to keep going pushed that old gear over the top, and boom.
Instead of a few million or so to upgrade the gear and service (or it might have been adding a separate service for the new ride, it was decades ago) when the new ride was going in, they decided to press their luck ...it ended up costing them several million and a lot of downtime to fully replace all the damaged gear...and repair the dozens of ride motors that burned up (and a few of the park's internal padmount transformers (big green boxes) as well.

It would be kind of funny to me if the animatronics actually ran two entirely separate loops and had to home in between. Path blending has been a fairly well developed science for what, 20 years now?
I hadnt considered the power requirements until now though, and i can see how the ride updates might have put way more strain on the power systems than they were originally designed for.
I like the way he describes the whole system of running and controlling a show-ride. Very complex. One other solution to the humidity problem would be to cool the water. That would make any condensation go back into the water and keep the surrounding air dry. However, it would also make the boats cold and the passengers might not like that.

Honestly that intro card is such a nostalgia trip for me because I literally rode stormrunner about 7 times in one day back when I went to Hershey park (there was some extremely heavy rain and most people left so there was no line at all).

I heard a lot about the optical eyes causing issues, but also heard about a lot of fire alarm shut downs etc, but what your video taught me was the home position possibilities, or even more the power usage. Great stuff! Too bad we'll never know for sure as disney cast members/disney maintenance are probably locked down tight with NDAs etc.

I do believe that since Splash Mountain used older technology and didn't get a full overhaul meaning the ride is still vulnerable to the same problems Splash Mountain had. Some of the newer animatronics are near the place or are in the old place of the Splash Mountain animatronics. This is normally the power supply/source for the animatronic which might still be old. Splash Mountain also had issues but not as much as Tiana's does now. Tiana's switched to electric animatronics where Splash Mountain had hydraulics.
The big problem with this ride is that the "story" is terrible. Disney rides are all about telling stories. This ride has no villain, there are no stakes. its a weak story that was shoe horned into an existing layout and didn't take advantage of the unique elements of the ride. I'm quite confident that they can fix the technical details, but they can't fix the weak story-line without talking it offline for a refurb

One thing that is the secret weapon of animatronics is the harmonic drive gear, which allows for extremely small motors to move a lot of mass with nanometer precision. There is of course a trade off, these tiny motors have to move incredibly fast and will often require air or water cooling which takes up valuable space. What’s funny is that because the harmonic drive gear results in an outrageous amount of torque, a large innocent looking animated figure can easily crush or knock over a large adult.

Thank you for explaining all of this. I've always been into animatronics, and as soon as I heard about Splash Mountain getting switched, i couldn't stop thinking about how much the water must affect those animatronics every day. The humidity plus water is going to wear those animatronics down fast.

@17:00 - Epcot's Living with the Land ride just has access control cards (HID, I think) glued to the side of the track to trigger the boat's PA system to play the various narration pieces. I've always been tempted to mess/hack it but never got around to it.

American Eagle at Great America uses an optical Photo eye at it's final brake. It trouble lights all the damn time thanks to birds and squirrels.
@@DokiKimori critters are the worst. No one knows how fast spiders work until they start building their home on a photo eye. Spiders get EVICTED with extreme prejudice.
Why don't they replace it with a proxy sensor?
@@alaeriia01 well photo eyes are great for watching long distances with one input. So they are useful in some cases. I’ve seen proxy sensors used but they needed to add about 10 to make up what the photo eye did.

I worked at a park that had 2 launched LIM coasters. I was told that when the second coaster opened (about 10 years before I started working there), that the rides had a position to coordinate launches, and if both launched/recharged their capacitors at the same time, it would trip the grid in at least that area of the park. Not sure exact details, but it was common at that park to have power issues whenever a new attraction was constructed and opened

Out of a local dumpster years ago I got an old “showtime pizza” pneumatic animatronic, one year if I can accumulate enough valving it will dance again. Lol!
@@ArtBarn591 wow so cool! SMC makes really nice and cheap modular pneumatic valving that can be placed in tight areas.
Dish washer solenoid valves are good for air too, and are fairly cheap for generic ones. Free if you find the appliances discarded on the side of the road. A 1/4" nut driver and a sharp knife is all you need to remove them. Most are still 120v but newer models sometimes use other DC voltages so look up the part number to be sure. If buying them online, stick to the $6 - $20 price range and avoid the overpriced ones marketed for specific models of appliances. They're all basically the same thing. Great DIY option.

The question is... did any of this come up during testing. If it didn't then they did not test properly. If it did then they decided to open the ride anyway and deal with the bad press.
@@stevehafke3614 seems the cast member preview was also full of problems so I’d say it was there during testing. Just my opinion.
@@ryantheridemechanic problems like these should have been caught even before cast member previews and most likely were. A decision was made and a buggy ride was opened.
@@stevehafke3614They rushed the opening presumably because of the capacity issues that having that ride closed creates within the park. It’s critical to keeping the wait times down throughout the park.
I would say one the problems with Modern Disney is they no longer take down a ride because a show element doesn't work... They just run it anyway. Thus leading to the "B-type" mode and all that. With non moving animatronics or the like.

First of all, a temperature difference of 2 degrees Celsius is a temperature difference of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Since 0 on one scale is not 0 on the other scale, you can't simply use a temperature conversion chart when talking about temperature differences. Yes, I feel sorry for all you Americans being stuck with that weird temperature scale. 😂
I have seriously never heard of hydraulic actuators in Aaimatronics. When a lot of parks in Europe built dark rides in the 80s, the animatronics were usually pneumatic driven. You could hear the clacking of the solenoid valves and the hissing of air being released. And, unsurprisingly, the motion was quite jerky. After that, most parks with the exception of maybe Disney, didn't do much in terms of animatronics until more recently when they also went for electric actuators. One notable difference from the pneumatic animatronic was (or maybe still is, I haven't been there in about 15 years) the "Fata Morgana" dark ride at Efteling in the Netherlands. They used a similar control technology to the rotating lobes you discussed, but instead of using them to drive hydraulic valves controlling cylinders, they used bowden cables to transfer the motion from the control lobes to the animatronics.
When it comes to the power supply of modern animatronics, I would rather think that each one has its own dedicated power supply built in or nearby. Why do I think such? Well, first of all, if you have to run let's say 24V DC over long stretches of wiring, you have a lot higher losses than what you would have when running mains from the central power distribution point to each animatronic. Also, you can use smaller, more common power supplies that are likely less expensive than one that is as massive as it would be needed to power all of them (and you can easily keep spares in stock in case one goes out. You don't want to have that big expensive one sitting around just in case). And, last but not least, those power supplies can run off quite "dirty" voltage. At work, we tested some off the shelf 24V supplies , and they output a clean smooth voltage over the entire input range from about 90 all the way up to 230V. We also found that they would run off DC as long as the voltage was within range, as the first thing in there was a rectifier. Therefore using individual power supplies also gives you clean voltage as a benefit (and 24V over a long wire, potentially close to lines powering something big would be far from clean). But I am just speculating here myself, it would just make more sense to me.
When it comes to sensing the boat position in a log flume, I like the approach Mack rides uses. I may have mention it before, but they use sensors that have "feeler fingers" sticking up from the water, and the boat will trigger them when passing over - it will just depress them and they will come back up once the boat has passed (kind of like these barriers that you can only drive over in one direction, otherwise they will slice up your tires) . So no matter the angle of the boat or how deep it is in the water, it will always trigger them. I have only seen them being used in the block system, as the log flume I am most familiar with only has triggered "show scenes" in the turntable area - and of course there the boat runs on its wheels. From what I understand is that the submerged part of the switches is a basically a prox switch (you can get the point where the wiring passes through watertight no problem, especially given that it only sets in water about half a meter deep), and the feeler finger is mounted externally, with a counterweight on the other side of the hinge so that it stands up all the time. The prox switch then simply detects the position of that feeler finger or its counterweight, which only pivots around one point, so it is easy to tell if it is up or down.
I HAVE A QUESTION! 🙋♂️ you may have covered this before but I would love to know the different types of roller coaster breakdowns. I was recently at cedar point and their rollercoasters go down VERY frequently. I understand it varies with manufacturers, but their Rocky Mountain construction coaster, steel vengeance broke down SO many times, most of their B&m rides broke down when we were in line, their zamperla wildmouse coaster broke down when we were in line, and maverick, their intamin lsm broke down so bad they needed to evacuate people from the break down. Anyway I’m just really interested what the breakdowns mean and why maintenance has to be on site to override every time.
@@williambooth6524 I have multiple video on breakdowns. But it really boils down to the park. Disney lets their ops crew reset rides and log troubles, maintenance is called when they are having repetitive or can’t get it to reset. But some parks don’t allow ops to touch the ride faults at all. So the bulk of time down is defined by the park. After that, there’s two types of faults. Ones that just stop motion, or ones that interrupt power to the ride (Estop). Some rides have warnings but not many from my limited experience.
Cedar Point ride operator on Magnum and Top Thrill Dragster, once upon a time. I recall most of our down time was due to guests pulling out phones and cameras, which Cedar Fair took very seriously. Other times, resets were quickly preceded by a phone call to log and move on. E-stops are a whole different problem. No one loves an e-stop.
RMCs are cranky for their first few years of operation. I'm not sure why SteVe continues to be cranky though; I suspect it has something to do with the massive wood structure. I know RMC wanted to do a lattice arch like Iron Gwazi or Zadra and Cedar Point said no.

Interesting video. Though immersion is a definite part of "themed" rides, I think the developers need to find a balance between dependability and realism. Disney is catering to a younger audience... How much realism is needed? (aka It's a Small World has worked for decades) For what it costs to get into theme parks, getting people on and through the ride should be a higher priority than unreliable ultra-realism, imho.
Going to a baseball field for a joke is more imagination than we've gotten from Disney in years 😂

Nice detailed explanation regarding the different kinds of animatronics, though it doesn’t take a qualified mechanical engineer to know that using complex sensor triggered animatronics on a log-fume ride isn’t a very good idea!
MEMS gyros and accelerometers are cheap so Disney needs to use more of them in their animatronic feedback loops 😂
@@bassjasinski it has to be a mess in those things. Truly need an advanced degree to troubleshoot.
With the new stuff I would think that the actuators already have position feedback built in. It's not rocket science, and you don't even need to go to gyros and accelerometers that need a lot of processing to go from their signal to a position. You can have anything as small as just a potentiometer (if you think small like a model servo that could be used for light things like eyes to move) up to brushless DC actuators with an encoder already built in for the motor control.
I would not want to use sensors that only record a change to keep track of the absolute position, unless you regularly reach some kind of reference position to reset your assumed position value. Especially when dealing with a finite range of motion like there...

@@joshw7201 the water is taken from an external reservoir so it’s at outside temperature. Even in California where it’s an internal reservoir, the act of pumping it heats the water quickly. A cooling system for the water would tag on millions to the price tag. Plus imagine how cold that would make the splash!! Burr

Water vapor (grains of moisture) in FL in summer = brutal. Condensation occurs somewhere in pretty much every building during the summer. Just the facts of life here for 5 months.

@@ryantheridemechanic great question. i happen to know a fair amount about this subject, as I own a building science consulting business. The short answer is ... as long as the steady state surface temp of a material is within 1 or 2 degrees of the ambient dewpoint, there is the potential for condensation to occur. Disney already handles this very situation. The doors to the retail locations are wide open with the AC running during the summer, yet nothing condensates. That's because they use dedicated outdoor air equipment in those retail locations to accomplish this. I often use the water bottle analogy. If a water bottle starts to condensate outside in the summer after you take it from the fridge, you don't need to call the water bottle manufacturer. The bottle isn't leaking. Just physics at work. No matter how big of a pile of money you have, you can't beat physics.

@@ryantheridemechanic if moisture is indeed a complicating factor, I'm sure there are all sorts of creative mitigation strategies they can brainstorm up help to balance things out. just down the street at Hagrids, they have a few outdoor (covered) animatronics that work reliably. but the skrewt is just on a turntable and I don't think that Hagrid himself is a very complicated animatronic. and the unicorns at the end (which are exposed to the elements) are pretty basic.

my understanding is splash mountain had a lot of breakdowns, too. who knows for what reason/s, everyone always wants to say it's a maintenance not doing/not allowed to do their job. again, unless an insider comes out and says what the real problem is, we'll never know the truth of it.
are there dehumidifiers running? i'd imagine those would help if they could spare that much power.
@@ryanbarker5217 not that I know of. Too much Florida to take out. So I’m super curious to see what California does. If theirs mess up too, it could be temperature. If theirs work better its probably humidity based.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I've heard rumors that the current plan is to shut down Tiana's Bayou Adventure as early as January and try to deal with some of the mechanical/sensor issues over the winter when the disney parks are historically less crowded. Who knows if they'll actually do this though or if it will even help given the amount of issues this ride probably has.
Can you do a video on the Jaws ride mechanics and your thoughts on how all that worked and the problems the engineers would have encountered?

Your closing, indicating your fear of Disney commenters... Not even (former) Disney Imagineers are safe from their wrath. I was going to share your video to X, but it might get you some less than "magical" feedback from that certain demographic. But, I really appreciated your thoughtful insight into what's wrong with Tiana's Bayou Adventure and believe that you're not wrong in your speculation. A great number of Imagineers, and most of those involved in the development of Splash Mountain are no longer with the company resulting in the loss of institutional knowledge that could have prevented such bad show for Disney.
@@david_walker_esq don’t be afraid to share. Eventually I’ll hit the Disney crowd and deal with the repercussions. It will probably just amount to less response. And yea, even though people document as much as possible, theirs tribal knowledge lost when your experienced staff leaves. Quite sad.
Is there some way you could heat the animatronics to above dew point to prevent condensation, or would that overheat the systems? Just wondering... Great video as always!

Interesting what you said about show because one time I rode the chocolate tour ride at Hershey chocolate world and almost no scenes were working and they said “yeah we have to wait until the end of the day to fix those”
That’s because Hershey is a small regional park that doesn’t have to live up to the same standards as Disney. The cost to go there vs Disney is a massive difference.
@@josephbrown9685 yeah definitely but Tbf most of the scenes are screens and had an error about google chrome so it should have just been a matter of getting everyone off turning the screens off then on and starting anew

Look into Bounce at oakwood theme park in wales, been all over the local news that the ride didnt stop and hit the ground but the park released a video showing the ride actually stopping as it should do

Tiana has no loop it triggers as the boat gets there making it freeze as you move up to it. It looks like crap
