    Having built more than a few things from 2x4s, this thing is built like a tank and will easily hold many times more weight than a normal person can lift.
    Wood is an amazing material and is very study when used properly. Well done!

  • @oojagapivy

    I like it! My only suggestion is the addition of feet perpendicular to the "weight" end to minimise the chance of tip-back when no-one is on the bench to provide counterweight. Other than that, looks rock-solid.

    People are only saying it's dangerous because they don't know how strong wood actually is. People use it to build houses. Surely it can hold a few hundred pounds no problem. I don't believe the wood itself failing is dangerous at all.

  • @raraavis7782
    @raraavis7782 6 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    Huh...I would never have considered wood for this kind of thing....should be sturdy enough though.
    I would have maybe cut the ends of the support beams in the front at a slight angle, to make sure the bar slides into the rack on it’s own if you plan to do reps to failure...just a little safety measure in case you’re struggling or get dizzy or something and only barely manage to get the thing back into the rack. Especially if you lift while alone.
    Oh, and DON‘T put on the clamps/clips (not sure what they‘re called in English) when benchpressing alone. If you ever get stuck with the barbel on your chest you want to be able to unload it by tilting it!
    Next video: how to install a panic button on your bench press rack 😂

      2x4's are a very good wood for constructing load bearing constructions. I've made an aquarium stand out of 2x4 and now there rests some 200kg (or 440lbs) of water and glass on it for around 4 years (by now)

  • @FlukeTog
    @FlukeTog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Or Craig’s list always has some for 1/4 the price of materials. But if ya have them laying around then cool. Add a couple supports to combat any tipping w heavier weight & maybe 4x4’s I’ll use since I have em. The cheap stores sell long swimming pool kick-boards for closed cell foam cheap. Anyways thanks for the video. Sunday project

    Yeah it looks sturdy as ill get out but I believe you are missing an important piece: Where's the safety bars? Like I don't generally need them myself cause all though I do go all out I keep it within a safe parameter. But I just would not feel safe pushing myself without there either being a spotter or some safety bars (cause sometimes you can't get a spotter). Its just a critique I'm surprised that you didn't have them is all, again though it is a nice build and ill look into making it myself.

    • @augmenseke6131
      @augmenseke6131 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t repeatedly slam a loaded bar onto it. So zero. It’s rated for zero. It shouldn’t exist. For several reasons. Inherent wear from intended use, width, lack of safety catch. It’s a whole mess. It needs to withstand repeating slamming of a fully loaded bar. Without wear.

  • @bighud20
    @bighud20 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the idea. But won’t wood will wear down on the rack after loading and unloading the metal bar? I see you’ve responded to many other comments about the strength of wood, which I don’t argue, just can’t help but feel like this wouldn’t work for bigger/stronger lifters. I would think after months of a 250+ pound person racking and unracking up to 350lbs of weight on the barbell and the combined weight on the bench would lead to at least some wiggle/wobble/loosening of the joints. Seems like a great idea for a beginner, just not for everyone and not a long term solution.

    • @HomeMadeModern
      @HomeMadeModern  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i agree that this isn't for hard core lifters but in terms of the wood wearing out i would suggest that people look at how anvils are often supported on the end grain. wood is strong in compression and lamination prevents against splits. Working with rigging crews that use wood beams to support 20,000 lbs shipping containers and heavy equipment changed my views on the strength of wood in compression. They will use the same timbers for years constantly loading and unloading thousands of pounds onto them.

    A 2x4 (roughly 50x100mm) has an allowable load of a bit more than 1300lbs (600kg) trust me you will never bench that much weight no one will.
    The sole danger could be structural but this seems well made so basically this is way sturdier than any (low quality and hollow) steel bench you can buy. This is also more educationnal, less expensive, customisable ...
    Don't underestimate wood, this material is realiable. I once made a two-pole squat rack made out of wood (cement feet) and it could hold much than 400kg without problem, it cost me 10€ (cement + bucket, got the two 20x10x150cm for free) I still has it and it still make its job better than any 500€ squat rack would. I estimated (before doing it) that it could hold up as much as a ton, I think I'm good !
    I've also seen (on youtube) a lot of people (including jacked up powerlifters) having homegym exclusively made out of wood, so please be a little less doubtful about the sturdyness of an humanity well known, and well studied, material. Educate yourselves.

      To be fair, houses are made from wood and screws in North America and they are plenty strong enough.

    • @samuelyi9189
      @samuelyi9189 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      J To be fair those houses have huge main support beams made out of 12x12 maple or even redwood. And theyre incredibly stress tested in a computer analysis. If the two layers of 2x4 fail on the bench then you have an injury waiting to happen.

    • @HomeMadeModern
      @HomeMadeModern  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sam, where are you getting your information? Do you know how much 12inch by 12inch maple or redwood beams would cost? maple structural members are incredibly rare as in less than 1 out of every 10,000 homes built in the US. As for computer analysis most residential structural calculations are done from charts. I appreciate skeptics and fact based critics it makes for better designs but please don't over state things that are patently false.

    • @samuelyi9189
      @samuelyi9189 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HomeMadeModern Considering how many homes utitlize a single beam as a weight bearing designs older homes usually have hardwood beams, in a perfect world it would be redwood or maple. I do like many of your videos however I do not agree at all with a bench press constructed from wood. I see no angle brackets or metal brackets at all to reinforce and I truly do not think it is safe to be pressing weights on a wooden structure.
