UPDATE: I INSTALLED THE ARROW THE WRONG WAY. YOU WILL WANT TO MATCH THE ARROW WITH THE AIRFLOW - SORRY! EVERYTHING ELSE IS GREAT INFORMATION!
You wont' believe how filthy this cabin air filter is. It was probably never changed, since the car was new. That was around 7 years ago, and thousands of passengers.
I don't smoke cigarettes, although the filter had a strong scent of cigarettes for some reason.
Here is what is on the Toyota website, about cabin air filters for Prius:
    Cabin Air Filters
Cabin air filters do a remarkable job of helping to keep undesirables like diesel soot, dust and pollen out of the passenger compartment, promoting a healthier, more comfortable environment for you and your passengers. But if you’ve noticed reduced airflow from the heater vents, or if the windows fog up easily in “FRESH” mode, replacement is likely necessary.

I believe the air flows from the top to the bottom and you put yours in upside down. That is why the top is so dirty. Some filters have an "up" arrow, that points up when correctly installed. Others have an "air flow" arrow, that points down when correctly installed.

Drats, I saw this video and I went to my car to flip the filter upside down. After seeing this comment I gotta go back to flip it back again. haha

Very good point chrisra2. I came here looking for this exact information. I was just now replacing my original Toyota cabin filter with an aftermarket filter from STP. When I removed the dirty Toyota filter the arrow had been pointing up, but the printed information that came with the STP filter said to point the arrow down. I was confused and came here hoping to find a once confused soul who had figured it out. I appreciate you taking the time to post the correct information.

You should remove this video and reupload it with the filter facing the proper way. If people follow what you did they will do more harm than good, the "airflow" arrow is different than the "up" arrow, if it says airflow on the filter you should have the arrow facing down, as is the case with the filter you purchased.

  • @hector-lee-taylor

WRONG! AIR FLOWS FROM TOP DOWN. ARROW MUST POINT DOWN. THE ARROW ON THE PLASTIC LID 'IS NOT' FOR AIRFLOW! If you look at the filter you removed, it has an arrow with the word UP. That is correct, because it is probably OEM, but does NOT indicate airflow. NON-OEM filters will probably have an arrow and the word airflow. Airflow arrows should point down. That should be fairly obvious as the dirt was on the top.

I just bought a MicroGard HEPA filter for a 2010 Toyota Prius and the instructions say to install the new filter with the arrow pointing up for that make and model.
So basically this is by design and the arrow is not meant to indicate airflow direction for the Toyota Prius air filters of this generation at least.

At 3:37, loose debris is visible on TOP of the old filter. This is a strong indication that air travels DOWN through the filter, not up as you indicated in the video. I think the up arrow on the door is merely an indication of which way the door fits into place...which is stupid because the door can only latch one way, and it leads to filters being put in the wrong way as shown in this video. Otherwise, it is an EXCELLENT video.

It was much harder than the video looked to get the drawer out. It took my buff husband about 10+ minutes to get it out. He was afraid of breaking it, but it didn’t break, and we finally got it out. I say we, but I was not strong enough. Changing the filter was a cinch after that. Then, you have to make sure the bottom hinges to the drawer are lined up before trying to put the top part back in. Otherwise, you have to do it all over again, which we did. But it saved us a dealership’s fee, so it’s worth it in the end.

Funny thing is you don’t even need to take the stupid drawer out. Theres an access panel right on the drawer to take off to get to the filter. Plus the airflow is backwards from what he said.

Black color of your original filter is not dirt. It's activated carbon. Much better air filtering than the white one. More money as well.

So at 3:15 you say the arrow is pointing up for the airflow. I removed the old filter and being curious I stuck a string in there and the air is definitely blowing down.

Yep AIR FLOW DOWN IF FILTER HAS A AIR FLOW ARROW !!

  • @hfarms5779
    @hfarms5779 ปีที่แล้ว

Two errors. The arrow is the direction of the air flow, from top down (noted below). Second the hard sides are on the side not to the back, that's why the filter is loose on both sides. The filter that was removed had the folds toward the engine and the arrow pointed up. Not correct.
