Your video was so easy to follow, I went to the auto parts store, purchased the proper filter and put it in myself. Thank you from an 82 year old grandmother!
Thank you for this video. These are the moments I miss my dad not being here to show me things anymore. You made it so easy and now I don’t worry about being over charged for a simple task! Thank you
I did this just today, following your great instructions! I have to take my Prius in tomorrow for a recall service. I mentioned that I might need a cabin air filter and asked if it's DYI. The service person told me "it's kind of tricky". Ha! No it was not, even for an older woman like me! Thank you so much.
Great 'how to'. I especially appreciate getting straight to the point with little intro and not wasting my time. My 2013 Prius filter is a little different, but the process is the same.
@@billweir1745 i have a 3rd gen prius and im a mechanic bought it because things are easy to fix, air filter takes as much time to replace as opening the hood and the cabin filter is the same as in the video like 2 minutes
@@heisenfeis Yeah the labor costs are pretty insane at dealership mechanics. I replaced my headlights, high beams, license plate lights, filters, and did the coolant drain and refill all for less than they would have charged me for just the filters, and I still have a bunch of new spare parts left over for the next few years.
I bought one of these filters for $6 through Amazon and installed it using this video as instructions. It felt like it could not have been easier. This video is great. Thanks.
Sitting at the dealership now, guy tells me that it will cost $150 for them to clear a mouse house out of my cabin filter. Google search saved me again. Thanks Car Angel
I had a mouse house too in my Prius but she pulled kleenex out of a box on my front seat and went to the outer part of the air exchange and piled it up to the extent that it caused such a drag on the blower motor that it burned it out! I finally figured out there was a mouse living in my car and caught it with a mouse trap. I could not figure out why when I got into the car there were small shreds of kleenex all over passenger seat and floor! Now I know! Those mice are destructive little beggars!
I park my 2012 PriusV outside during the day in a somewhat rural area. The dealer tells me I have mice in the cabin air filter nearly every 5,000 miles. I'm not sure how they get to the cabin air filter. There don't seem to be any holes larger than a medium nail head (various screens).
Helpful video. It isn't always necessary to replace (= throw into landfill) your air cabin filter. Gently clean with warm water and soft brush, or vacuum it with a wand vacuum attachment. Be careful not to damage (tear) the filter, since then you will need to replace it. But you can reuse a time or two without issues. If your Prius AC seems to be not performing as well as it once did, this should always be your first step. My original filter was so clogged (based on the fine silt/dust of the rural roads I often drive) that the AC set to max was barely sufficient. After cleaning, only 2 'bars' of AC power was all I needed. 2012 Plug in Prius 102k miles.
Friend of my mother was quoted $195 to do this from her local dealership. I'll be doing this tomorrow for her, and in return I get some fresh baked cookies. Win, win! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much ! Toyota dealership wants $79.99 to replace the filter ! That's crazy ! I even knew it didn't have to cost that much to replace for such a cheap part. Thanks again !
This video is a few years old, but is still relevant. Thanks so much! I am NOT in any way, shape or form knowledgeable about car maintenance. So easy and your directions were really clear. I never knew this filter existed before yesterday. I was surprised that the filter wasn't more dirty, so I must have PAID to have Toyota replace it at some point. No more!
Thanks Greg! Just bought a used 2007 and checked the cabin filter. Yikes! It was filthy; full of all kinds of leaves, dirt, and dead bugs. I picked up a new filter at the local auto parts store for $17. You can find them online for less than half that if you can wait a couple of days for delivery. Happy filter changing all!
Didn't realize there was more than 1 air filter in my Prius, and I've been driving it for 95,000 miles! Dealer wanted $150 to replace it, I replaced for $8 in 5min with your video!
I took my 2007 Prius for a 150K "major" maintenance service. This particular job is something that I believe they did not perform, but thanks to this video, I will do it by myself.
Thank you very much! I didn't want to have the dealer charge me $40 to have this done. I tried to figure it out myself, but I'm glad I found your video; I wouldn't have ever guessed to look behind the glove box! Very easy, and very good instructions!
Excellent explanation. I wish I had known how easy it was to replace this YEARS ago. I just did my Camry and it was soooo filthy. Doing our Prius next! :)

Thanks for the video.... the dealership put in a new filter two weeks ago and it had a mouse in it apparently. The car started to stink. I used your video to find the filter and in it I found the mouse. Thanks again.
I just paid $50 to have this done yesterday, out of curiosity as to why it cost so much $ I came to TH-cam. Now I feel like I’ve been robbed 😫. Doing it myself next time! Thanks for this video!
Much appreciate the clear tutorial! I knew the idea of how to change one, but I probably would've snapped a plastic tab or struggled with that hydraulic arm without seeing the process done once first.
Thanks for the video. You saved me big bucks. I was unable to release the strut, but able to pull out the glove box. Then the whole strut fell out. I haven't figured out how to put it back yet, but the glove box seems stable.
Wonderful video. Thank you! Dealer was going to charge me $130 to change this filter! And I was going to pay it, until I thought to do a little research first.

Check your hybrid battery air filter and intake vent in the back seat area. Odds are it has never had the grill popped off and the air filter changed and the fan blades vacuumed out.
