DISCLAIMER: I was initially not going to make this versus video but after I announced that I was going to compare Captain Marvel to Wonder Woman, I got A TON of requests from people who wanted me to compare it to Shazam. Hence I started work on this versus video whilst I was simultaneously working on my Wonder Woman VS Captain Marvel video. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the video!
I was gonna watch Shazam instead of captain marvel but my friends wanted to see captain marvel so I have seen cap marvel. For me i5 isn’t bad but I can say that shazam is a lot better.
Shazam was pretty incompetent, messy and overall pretty shit though. Whereas Captain Marvel was much better put together, much tighter, and people’s main criticism strangely enough seems to be that Brie Larson’s acting is “boring” (because she isn’t obnoxiously over-the-top I guess? I mean, I thought she was pretty good and she is an Oscar winner).
Aquaman was good(ish), Shazam had it's shining moments and it's meh moments and it's 🙄👀. Even though many people claimed to love Wonder Woman, it stands out as one of the WORST films I have seen in recent history.
Bottom line: DC made a better Female Led Superhero movie and a better Captain Marvel movie. I do think Captain Marvel was better in Endgame... of course, there was a lot less of her in that movie, so that probably helped.
When she came in in endgame and started fighting thanos I saw people start to stand up as if they were leaving than she got punched in the face and we cheered

Not only Shazam is better, but Shazam is a much better 90s movie than Captain Marvel, despite the latter being actually happened in 90s. Also you just compared Captain Marvel to Wonder Woman and Shazam back to back, you are pretty much bullying Captain Marvel at this point.

I also felt like almost everything Billy was doing as a kid who just got powers and can turn into a powerful God-like being is exactly what us real world kids/adults would be doing if it happened to us. We'd experiment, act silly, have loads of fun, and possibly save the day. God I loved Shazham. 😁
It's irritating that the "success" & "box office win" of a lousy CM movie was only due to the enormous MCU & Disney machine bulldozing their way like a big bully Shazam is the original Captain Marvel!
The fact that it was the movie right before endgame helped it a lot. Wonder what trick are they going to do so it gets bailed out again when they release cap marvel 2. I'm not watching that on cinemas though.

When I saw Captain Marvel... it looks like even Brie Larson is bored and uninterested in her own movie. It is one thing for the audience to be bored and uninterested in your movie... but when even the actors are bored and uninterested in your own movie... that is when to stop and think what the hell you are doing.
Shazam was better because of the characters, plot, and that you could really look and feel the characters’ emotions and enjoy a movie! With CM, the main character of all people didn’t have a personality that you could simply look at and find. She obviously was full of herself
Carol didn't seem phased or have a strong reaction to finding out about her life being a lie or that she has all these memories she lost. She just goes about business as usual. How can anybody connect with a character like that?
Mmmm... it’s funny that Brie keeps getting criticised for being “full of herself” when Shazam was actually incredibly obnoxious and stuck-up throughout most of the film (and he still remained cocky until the end)... In fact, I’ve seen a lot of really overly confident, full of themselves superheroes, who haven’t been criticised for those traits at all... ....mmmmmm funny, that..... But how even was Captain Marvel “full of herself”? Because she wasn’t super emotional? Neither was Nick when he suddenly found out that aliens exist. Because she dared to be a (female) superhero from another world who wasn’t actually naive and insecure, who didn’t cry all the time and rely on the support of others, because she was confident in her abilities? That sounds more like it.
well, the entire time she was strugling to remember who she was and knew that most of her memories were missing, su of course it wouldn't be a surprise if remembering who she was is different feom who she is... he fact thet she kept trying to remember who she was the whole time ssuggests she had little interest in what the kree had tried to turn her into.
@@alexbennet4195 Heres the key difference, Billy was obnoxious, absolutely, but he had immense character growth and by the end of the film, had become a much more open and loving person to his new family. Carol however, starts the film arrogant and ends the film arrogant. She exhibits no character development beyond the absolute basics and her personality does not change at all. The only thing that changed for Carol, was that she got stronger. Hardly a compelling character.
It’s really pretty shitty actually. Like, the plot is really messy, the tone is all over the place and completely incongruous, the set, outfit and character designs are terrible, completely generic and lazy... But I guess you can make up your own mind if you see it.

I never saw Capt. Marvel, but the way you presented the "daughter" is out of character. A child of that age, it is well known, that their greatest fear is separation from their parents. That's why it's very threatening to say to your child 'you'll leave them alone.' I agree, Shazam played this fear better. Shazam was abandoned as a child, thus making his entire story arc more realistic and relatable.

They could have used any other names like Captain Danvers or Major Marvel or anything else before Marvel if they just want it as a brand carrier, but to use those two specifics words knowing it was already an existing popular character down on its luck due to copyright lapse, is just a douche move by Marvel like banks quick to foreclose just because a family falls on hard time - the right thing to do was allow that hardship to pass which it has & now give the name back to the original!

I appreciate your hard word in making your videos and how you pick apart CM for its faults. Your review skills for bad storytelling are why I became a subscriber. All that said, I just want to point out that SHIELD being called that in the movie isn't really an issue. They've been around since the 40s, and obviously it didn't take them 60 years to realize that the name spelled that. The best explanation I've seen for how that went in Iron Man is that Coulson was just being goofy. The acronym was used in Agent Carter as well.
Justin's Epic Voice Recordings yeah it was used in agent carter but no MCU movie references tv shows to that extent. For instance MCU has yet to reference inhumans yet that is all shield was concerned with for like 2 seasons.
Shazam reminded me of why I love superhero movies and honestly it was my favorite superhero movie of 2019... with maybe the exception of Joker 😜 Captain Marvel reminds me how boring and bad they can become

It's because MCU!Peter isn't an actual character. He's the archetypal wide-eyed innocent kid who has wholesome fanboy reactions and the audience is supposed to look at him like a cutie with a pure-heart. It's just irritating to me how that's his entire character. Just being there to be overwhelmingly wholesome so the audience gets the feels. The Peter Parker of the comics is more human, he has flaws. He can be irritable and snarky and even at times act out of selfishness. He's a realistic person. Why I hate MCU!Peter is that he lacks any of those qualities. Not only that but in the comic he had struggles. He had to take care of a feeble, sickly aunt. He was stuck in job with a tyrant boss. His love life was rarely if ever stable, his best friend was angsty, he has the guilt of Uncle Ben's death, etc. It's just irritating seeing that the MCU has reduced him to being the plucky, purehearted kid with a pretty carefree life.

They've got to be delusional because it's actually hard to find significant things that MCU!Peter has in common with the Peter of the comics. To me, I think they only say that because they love the MCU and are just happy to have Spidey in the MCU, they just convince themselves it's good because it's what''s currently available. The previous live action films weren't perfect about everything, but I can say that the people writing the character understood specific elements of what goes into making a Spider-man that lives up to the comics. The MCU take just has me constantly groaning at how the character's whole essence is to be cutesy and childlike. I really don't see the appeal in doing that with a character whose key trait is his relatability and how his flaws and struggles are so easy to understand.

What's more depressing? The MCU Captain "Marvel" came out first, has only the reputation of a decent/good franchise keeping it from being annihilated by the fans, and made more than a billion dollars; or that first real Captain Marvel that had to change his due to legal issues, had better reviews giving more good will to a franchise that still has Batman vs Superman in it, and made yet made (so far) less than 2/3rd's of the worldwide box office that "Captain Marvel" made.

I just rewatched Winter Soldier and there was a picture of Fury and Pierce shaking hands and in the picture Fury was bald, had a mustache, and had BOTH EYES. Showing Fury was define there for longer than Captain Marvel demonstrates.

I think it was marketing issues. Captain Marvel gotten more money because of the Marvel movies before it like Black Panther and Infinity War. Shazam unperformed because of what Zack Snyder did DCEU. Man of Steel was okay... Superman v. Batman sucked... Suicide Squad and Justice League are a lot worse. Wonder Woman and Aquaman did great... but it was already too late for Shazam... the damage has already been done by Snyder.

As a woman and a mother, I am frustrated that whenever a feminist ideology is put into a movie character that character has to be ALL STRONG, never crying, flat and emotionless. The power of being a woman is that we persevere through our emotions, push through conventional assumptions of our mental and physical capacity (do not underestimate the woman's body we make humans and sustain them for months from our milk alone!). But feeling things and being sensitive is not a sign of weakness. Being scared yet persevering is more a sign of courage than just never being scared at all. I never felt any real flaws or weaknesses in this Captain marvel character, there was no struggle no real pain or stakes, no real growth, therefore no real joy when the battle was won, I just saw smugness. It was like ok, youre strong whoopdee doo. There was nothing about her I related to at all, like ok sorry I am not a born badass like you. When I fell yeah I got up but man did I cry haha but there is nothing wrong with that! I was really rooting for this character, it was a missed opportunity to show what real women can do. I think they were sooo focused on the feminist agenda that they forgot to put substance in character development and create a real person.

In my family, my sister and I were the only ones who watched Captain Marvel. I only went because I wanted to support my sister, but I left theaters thinking "I'd rather watch Thor the Dark World." Later as my family was going to watch Endgame, my dad wondered if Captain Marvel had any plot elements he needed to know before watching Endgame (because they set up her reveal in Infinity War). I was honest and said, "not really." Do you know what I learned in that moment. Not only was Captain Marvel a bad movie, but it didn't contribute to the overall plot of the MCU. Nick Fury had a better origin in Winter Soldier, the origin of the name "Avengers" was unnecessary, it did nothing new with the Tesseract, and even the Skrull had a better introduction in Spiderman Far From Home. You can skip watching Captain Marvel, and you won't be missing out on anything, in contrast, you gain something by missing all damage made to Winter Soldier.
The movie really felt like a "We need to have a female superhero movie in our list before the end of our saga" which just makes me sad that we didn't get the Black Widow movie before she, y'know, *was dead* . Seriously the movie will take place beetween Civil War and Infinity War, so why don't make the movie beetween Civil War and Infinity War? It would add to the character before her death and properly honor our true first MCU heroine
@@phari4820 indeed. Black Widow should have served as Marvel's first female led movie. If they wanted a Captain Marvel movie, they should have just hired competent writers, directors, and actors. There's no movement or resistance against women with leading roles, we just want good characters with depth and vulnerability, and a little something called a character arc. Take Black Widow for example. In previous films we learned that she was broken down just to be reborn as an efficient, ruthless assassin. She even saw herself as a Monster and made sterile. That a lot of character drama, enough to forge an amazing arc. The writers behind Captain Marvel didn't want to give Carol Danvers such depth or room for growth. Making a character an invincible token character void of vulnerability or complexity isn't the way to provide a positive and powerful role model for your target audience. I'm afraid that good writing is becoming a lost art in Disney and many other media titans that have chosen political pandering over entertainment.

And I'm not here to say "feminism is ruining the industry", but it seems like it's trying to be SO forced that they just forgot how to make good characters before making feminist symbols. Just take Mulan, Jasmine, Cinderella, Alice, they were all strong characters in their original movies, but apparently if a character doesn't make speeches about independence, fight dragons, ride horses or is perfect since the day they were born they aren't strong female representation. @@phari4820 I completely agree. I grew up with Disney, and I just want to see it's magic return. Although I do think Disney is losing money, partly for their poor marketing decisions, and partly because of the Pandemic. They're losing their audience, but also their parks. I heard they even shut down a ton of their annual passes, and even losing Disney+ subscribers. They might have enough to tide them over for a couple decades, but I think they have taken an enormous hit over the past decade.

Black Widow is a much better example of a strong female character, she's complex, she has an interesting backstory and personality, and she can kick ass.
Love the use of Ben Wallfisch’s Shazam theme. It sounds perfect as a classical score for classic Captain Marvel. I can feel the Power of Hope and whimsical fun that those comics portrayed.
Thank you for the excellent video and sorry you had to discuss Captain Marvel again. Much appreciated 😄 I saw Shazam with my husband. I remember the laughs and warmth we felt at the end. It was really a fun movie. I actually saw Room. I could say she played her role well enough. But I immediately forget her until CM and I adored the Boy so much more as a character and actor. I also saw Endgame (sorry if this is a spoiler) she was at forgettable best honestly and had the charm and significance of a can opener.
I have one small request. The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions vs Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest and At Worlds End since both are back to back sequels that tried to capitalize on the success of their predecessors, but could not recapture the magic.
when me and my gf watched captain marvel in theaters it was so quite noone was reacting to anything at all except for 2 scenes My gf chuckled at the scene where carol growled back at the skroll and the whole theater laughed at a joke at the end that I can't remember. but other than those 2 short burst it was so dead felt awkward.
Captain Marvel- Fans of the wackier Phase 1 and 2 of the MCU will love it. Shazam!- Fans old-fashioned Raimi-esque superhero tales will love it. I personally really enjoyed both
@Knight Wayne yes. I hardly find anyone with this opinion but endgame has soooooo many problem and the story was bad overall and it ruined Thanos. Thanos in IW was an amazing villain but in endgame he wanted to destroy the universe and create a new one. That is so cliche af
I loved the advice that Monica Rambeau gave to her mother about choosing a one-in-a-lifetime adventure instead of watching The Fresh Prince. It was one of my favorite moments in the whole film.

In my opinion I think Shazam should have gotten a 9/10 it really made me feel for the character on like whatever captain marvel was supposed to be 😅

I also felt like almost everything Billy was doing as a kid who just got powers and can turn into a powerful God-like being is exactly what us real world kids/adults would be doing if it happened to us. We'd experiment, act silly, have loads of fun, and possibly save the day. God I loved Shazham. 😁

When I saw Captain Marvel... it looks like even Brie Larson is bored and uninterested in her own movie. It is one thing for the audience to be bored and uninterested in your movie... but when even the actors are bored and uninterested in your own movie... that is when to stop and think what the hell you are doing.

Carol however, starts the film arrogant and ends the film arrogant. She exhibits no character development beyond the absolute basics and her personality does not change at all. The only thing that changed for Carol, was that she got stronger.

I never saw Capt. Marvel, but the way you presented the "daughter" is out of character. A child of that age, it is well known, that their greatest fear is separation from their parents. That's why it's very threatening to say to your child 'you'll leave them alone.' I agree, Shazam played this fear better. Shazam was abandoned as a child, thus making his entire story arc more realistic and relatable.

I appreciate your hard word in making your videos and how you pick apart CM for its faults. Your review skills for bad storytelling are why I became a subscriber. All that said, I just want to point out that SHIELD being called that in the movie isn't really an issue. They've been around since the 40s, and obviously it didn't take them 60 years to realize that the name spelled that. The best explanation I've seen for how that went in Iron Man is that Coulson was just being goofy. The acronym was used in Agent Carter as well.
Justin's Epic Voice Recordings yeah it was used in agent carter but no MCU movie references tv shows to that extent. For instance MCU has yet to reference inhumans yet that is all shield was concerned with for like 2 seasons.

It's because MCU!Peter isn't an actual character. He's the archetypal wide-eyed innocent kid who has wholesome fanboy reactions and the audience is supposed to look at him like a cutie with a pure-heart. It's just irritating to me how that's his entire character. Just being there to be overwhelmingly wholesome so the audience gets the feels. The Peter Parker of the comics is more human, he has flaws. He can be irritable and snarky and even at times act out of selfishness. He's a realistic person. Why I hate MCU!Peter is that he lacks any of those qualities. Not only that but in the comic he had struggles. He had to take care of a feeble, sickly aunt. He was stuck in job with a tyrant boss. His love life was rarely if ever stable, his best friend was angsty, he has the guilt of Uncle Ben's death, etc. It's just irritating seeing that the MCU has reduced him to being the plucky, purehearted kid with a pretty carefree life.

They've got to be delusional because it's actually hard to find significant things that MCU!Peter has in common with the Peter of the comics. The previous live action films weren't perfect about everything, but I can say that the people writing the character understood specific elements of what goes into making a Spider-man that lives up to the comics. The MCU take just has me constantly groaning at how the character's whole essence is to be cutesy and childlike. I really don't see the appeal in doing that with a character whose key trait is his relatability and how his flaws and struggles are so easy to understand.

The MCU Captain "Marvel" came out first, has only the reputation of a decent/good franchise keeping it from being annihilated by the fans, and made more than a billion dollars; or that first real Captain Marvel that had to change his due to legal issues, had better reviews giving more good will to a franchise that still has Batman vs Superman in it, and made yet made (so far) less than 2/3rd's of the worldwide box office that "Captain Marvel" made.

I think it was marketing issues. Captain Marvel gotten more money because of the Marvel movies before it like Black Panther and Infinity War. Shazam unperformed because of what Zack Snyder did DCEU. Man of Steel was okay... Superman v. Batman sucked... Suicide Squad and Justice League are a lot worse. Wonder Woman and Aquaman did great... but it was already too late for Shazam... the damage has already been done by Snyder.

As a woman and a mother, I am frustrated that whenever a feminist ideology is put into a movie character that character has to be ALL STRONG, never crying, flat and emotionless. The power of being a woman is that we persevere through our emotions, push through conventional assumptions of our mental and physical capacity (do not underestimate the woman's body we make humans and sustain them for months from our milk alone!). But feeling things and being sensitive is not a sign of weakness. Being scared yet persevering is more a sign of courage than just never being scared at all. I never felt any real flaws or weaknesses in this Captain marvel character, there was no struggle no real pain or stakes, no real growth, therefore no real joy when the battle was won, I just saw smugness. It was like ok, youre strong whoopdee doo. There was nothing about her I related to at all, like ok sorry I am not a born badass like you. When I fell yeah I got up but man did I cry haha but there is nothing wrong with that! I was really rooting for this character, it was a missed opportunity to show what real women can do. I think they were sooo focused on the feminist agenda that they forgot to put substance in character development and create a real person.

I only knew DC's captain marvel and when I heard they'll make a movie for him, I was thinking 'Oh boy...hopefully marvel doesn't sue them for the name' and then marvel announces captain marvel and I was genuinely confused. In my family, my sister and I were the only ones who watched Captain Marvel. I only went because I wanted to support my sister, but I left theaters thinking "I'd rather watch Thor the Dark World."
Later as my family was going to watch Endgame, my dad wondered if Captain Marvel had any plot elements he needed to know before watching Endgame (because they set up her reveal in Infinity War). I was honest and said, "not really."
Do you know what I learned in that moment. Not only was Captain Marvel a bad movie, but it didn't contribute to the overall plot of the MCU. Nick Fury had a better origin in Winter Soldier, the origin of the name "Avengers" was unnecessary, it did nothing new with the Tesseract, and even the Skrull had a better introduction in Spiderman Far From Home. You can skip watching Captain Marvel, and you won't be missing out on anything, in contrast, you gain something by missing all damage made to Winter Soldier.
The movie really felt like a "We need to have a female superhero movie in our list before the end of our saga" which just makes me sad that we didn't get the Black Widow movie before she, y'know, *was dead* . Seriously the movie will take place beetween Civil War and Infinity War, so why don't make the movie beetween Civil War and Infinity War? It would add to the character before her death and properly honor our true first MCU heroine
@@phari4820 indeed. Black Widow should have served as Marvel's first female led movie. If they wanted a Captain Marvel movie, they should have just hired competent writers, directors, and actors. There's no movement or resistance against women with leading roles, we just want good characters with depth and vulnerability, and a little something called a character arc.
Take Black Widow for example. In previous films we learned that she was broken down just to be reborn as an efficient, ruthless assassin. She even saw herself as a Monster and made sterile. That a lot of character drama, enough to forge an amazing arc.
The writers behind Captain Marvel didn't want to give Carol Danvers such depth or room for growth. Making a character an invincible token character void of vulnerability or complexity isn't the way to provide a positive and powerful role model for your target audience. I'm afraid that good writing is becoming a lost art in Disney and many other media titans that have chosen political pandering over entertainment.

And I'm not here to say "feminism is ruining the industry", but it seems like it's trying to be SO forced that they just forgot how to make good characters before making feminist symbols. Although I do think Disney is losing money, partly for their poor marketing decisions, and partly because of the Pandemic. They're losing their audience, but also their parks. I heard they even shut down a ton of their annual passes, and even losing Disney+ subscribers. They might have enough to tide them over for a couple decades, but I think they have taken an enormous hit over the past decade.
If you got a dime for every time Captain Marvel smiles(not smirk) in the ENTIRE MCU, you wouldn’t be able to afford a McChicken.

I saw Shazam in theaters 3 times. Then I saw it some more on home release. THat's how much I loved it. Captain marvel.... once is more than enough.

Black Widow is a much better example of a strong female character, she's complex, she has an interesting backstory and personality, and she can kick ass.
Love the use of Ben Wallfisch’s Shazam theme. It sounds perfect as a classical score for classic Captain Marvel. I can feel the Power of Hope and whimsical fun that those comics portrayed.

I saw Shazam with my husband. I remember the laughs and warmth we felt at the end. It was really a fun movie.
I actually saw Room. I could say she played her role well enough. But I immediately forget her until CM and I adored the Boy so much more as a character and actor.
I also saw Endgame (sorry if this is a spoiler) she was at forgettable best honestly and had the charm and significance of a can opener.
I have one small request. The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions vs Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest and At Worlds End since both are back to back sequels that tried to capitalize on the success of their predecessors, but could not recapture the magic.
This was a slaughter
Let's just hope that the Russo Brothers were able to make Carol Danvers a way better character in Endgame.

when me and my gf watched captain marvel in theaters it was so quite noone was reacting to anything at all except for 2 scenes My gf chuckled at the scene where carol growled back at the skroll and the whole theater laughed at a joke at the end that I can't remember. but other than those 2 short burst it was so dead felt awkward.

I loved the advice that Monica Rambeau gave to her mother about choosing a one-in-a-lifetime adventure instead of watching The Fresh Prince. It was one of my favorite moments in the whole film.
