  • Building a homestead in South Africa is not easy, and we've found this out quite early in our journey to become more self sustaining and self sufficient.
    Now, add a few little farm animals (Pets more like it..) and things get quite a bit more complicated. We've done just that, and now our lives which were pretty much carefree and "lock up and go" have changed to the complete opposite.
    So join us for an update from what has become the "Funny Farm" in the dorpie.

    Alright, back to finish what I started watching, interesting journey. I sometimes look at our journey and think, "What did we get ourselves into." One thing TH-cam videos will never show is the hard that goes into homesteading. Enjoy the journey.

      Hi there, thanks so much for watching! Yes exactly - we thought the same thing a few months ago 😁 There are sooo many projects that need to be done in between work and now the pets. But we're loving it (most of the time 😆)

    • @remotecontrolfarmer
      @remotecontrolfarmer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@overberghomesteading Its also making the videos and then the editing in-between which is a full time job on its own.

      @@remotecontrolfarmer To be honest, its as you say. To try and create content remotely worth watching on TH-cam does take forever, the filming and then the editing, adding music etc etc. is extremely time consuming. Sometimes we'd get started on a project and think halfway through, we should have filmed that 😆Anyway, we soldier on!

      I think the difference with us is that Fanie has his bigger sister (Dolly) which puts him in his place when he tries to become top hog. Make no mistake, Fanie has an attitude of note but its great that Dolly reminds him that he is lower in the pecking order. We'll see how it goes, but so far so good!

    hahaaa thats fantastically funny. I know of a retired couple from Sydney Australia that were planning to move to Burny Island, Tasmania with their 4 Irish hounds. But during the film fever of Babe, they decided to buy a 'miniature' pig. It was obviously not a 'miniature' breed. 🤪So to move the 350kg pet pig to Bruny Island they had to rent a cessna plane to fly 'dad' and a sedated pig down.🤫🤪🥰🥰🥰 The dogs died first of old age. They lived happily ever after until another grave had to be dug 😭

    This was absolutely fantastic, thank you for sharing your beautiful daily lives, filled with so much joy and love which only animals can provide. Our favourites have to be Dolly and Fanie. 🐖🐖😍 We were totally enthralled when we saw (who we now know was) Dolly grazing in the garden as we drove past about three weeks ago and immediately fell in love. Keep doing what you're doing, you're lucky to call Baardskeerdersbos your beautiful home!

      Thanks very much! Yes, we must admit, we do live in a lovely little village. Thanks again for the great video on our whole area. We've sent the link to various friends and family to show them where we live. Enjoy the rest of your travels and drive safe!

    Is that house you photographed in Kleinbaai?

      @overberghomesteading  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That was a house I photographed and did some videography for a company called "Salted Fynbos Accommodation" which basically rents out holiday accommodation. This particular house was in Romansbaai Estate.

      @@overberghomesteading I can give u a few tips if you want.
      Grow food thats underground ( it stays good underground, even after the plants have died above ground) like potatoes, arrowroot, Jerusalem artichoke, sweet potatoes. You even get an edible Dhalia. All of these we eat like potatoes. I'm not sure what you can get in South Africa.
      Medicinal herbs is a must like oregano ( natural antibiotics), stinging nettle, sage, calandula, Echinacea, cayenne pepper ......too many to name.
      Its also good to invest in a dehydrator and a pressure canner.
      Enjoy

    I wonder why do you make pigs pets in a homestead?

    • @overberghomesteading
      @overberghomesteading  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      We're a bit strange like that. Normal people will get a dog or a cat - but we chose piggies - and they're awesome.
