Overberg Homesteading
South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 ก.พ. 2023
We're a normal couple with a dream to become more self sufficient and self reliant on a daily basis. We've bought a property in the beautiful Overberg region of the Western Cape which we are turning into a small homestead and will hopefully be there permanently in the near future.
Join us in our journey as we make this dream of living off the grid a reality.

Building A Homestead In South Africa | Our Lives Have Changed Drastically | Overberg Off Grid Living
Building a homestead in South Africa is not easy, and we've found this out quite early in our journey to become more self sustaining and self sufficient.
Now, add a few little farm animals (Pets more like it..) and things get quite a bit more complicated. We've done just that, and now our lives which were pretty much carefree and "lock up and go" have changed to the complete opposite.
So join us for an update from what has become the "Funny Farm" in the dorpie.

Building A Homestead In South Africa | Getting Off 3 Grids
มุมมอง 4.3K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we share our journey of pursuing a more off grid lifestyle in South Africa particularly as we build our humble little homestead. We cover the most important "Grids" we want to be free from initially, and hopefully will achieve them all soon. Thanks to everyone who is following our journey - it's slow progress at the moment but we are always moving forward. It seems like a lot of p...
Building a Homestead In South Africa - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
มุมมอง 3.3K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we share our experiences over the last few weeks, what's taken place in our lives and why we haven't posted an update in a while. So there's good news, bad news and an ugly part unfortunately! We've faced numerous challenges over the last few months so much so that we started questioning whether we were doing the right thing in pursuing a more self sufficient and off grid lifestyl...
We're Finally Going Off-Grid!

We finally got the Solar Panels to the Homestead after being stored in a garage for over a year and our Solar Geyser is also now installed! In order to keep Elsa happy, I needed to give the bathroom priority attention which involved tiling the shower floor and building the shower. After a bit of a battle, we eventually got it all done and I once again have a "Happy wife and a happy life." 😂 #ho...
Dover Stoves - Cold Fronts - And the best Chicken & Bacon Potjie we've ever made.
มุมมอง 2Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video we install our Wood Burning Dover Stove on our Homestead we are busy building in the Overberg region of South Africa. We were very keen to test the stove out so we decided to cook and share our first meal on it with you. And dam, this chicken dish we made came out beautifully. Definitely give it a try.
Quick New Homestead Tour In South Africa - And we need your advice!

After a good few months on the homestead we are busy building, we decided to make a video of our whole property and what our dreams and visions are - but we need your help! Please feel free to comment on what your would do with this piece of land if it was yours. We have a small blank canvas at the moment which we will start getting into once we have all the basics in the house sorted. Look for...
The House Is Starting To Take Shape - Despite Bad Builders and Songololos!
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
On this trip to the homestead to be, we finally get the majority of the interior walls painted and have to deal with the builders mess ups which in our opinion should never have taken place. The progress on the property is slow but at least its consistent and our little house is finally starting to look and feel like a home. However, there is still soooo much to do - but we soldier on on our jo...
Building a homestead in South Africa - Have we bitten off more than we can chew?
มุมมอง 2.8Kปีที่แล้ว
Elsa and I had to make some tough decisions over our December break with regards to our dream of building our off-grid homestead here in South Africa. It was vital however for us to do what we did, even though it eats into our very little pot of finances available for this project considering all the other items that still need to be done. Oh well, we took the plunge and there's no turning back...
Our first day on the Homestead and it was HORRIBLE!
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video we share our challenges and journey to eventually get on to our property we bought way back in June 2022, the absolute mess we found and the challenges we face of getting our homestead started. Nothing could have prepared us for what we found!
Homesteading in South Africa | Our Journey
มุมมอง 1.9Kปีที่แล้ว
Homesteading in South Africa is becoming more and more popular as people feel the need to move away from the bigger cities and become more self reliant and self sufficient. My wife and I are in the process of doing just that - starting a homestead in the beautiful Overberg region of South Africa. Join us on our journey! #homesteading #homestead Follow us on Instagram: @overberghomesteading
Yhoooo thats hectic. A squatter is no joke. Takes sp much to get them out.
Congratulations, this is journey to peace. Keep at it, it's all worth it. You will see. I'm right behind you on this.
Good job, nice. You are going to have to see how your area responds to planting and if you have some micro climates, so you can diversify your crops. I am in Cape Town and started a veggie patch in my back yard and a food forest in my front yard.
Well done, I have no debt, working to improve my solar system (double it's capacity), I am an Electrician, after that I am planning my water harvest system. I started a veggie patch in my back yard that's giving me a fair harvest, my food forest in my front yard is still not very productive, given time it will improve. Retired so I have time now.
Last year we were inundated with songalolos. Even in the house. Everything that was left for more than 2 hours had 1 under everything you picked up. Even in our laundry badkets
Amazing!
Best decision ever 👏
I don't know why I thought Overberg was in the Drakensberg. I was very confused for a while.
Your piggy were featured on the channel DUSTBUGS. Baardskeerdersbos.
Very cool bud.
I was just researching composting toilets in SA today, so I can't wait for the next episode 😆
The good: great, that things are going forward The bad: shame, that was quite a list. Good, that your wife was not hurt, bad about the bakkie. Sad about fence/tree. Those trees don't have deep roots and don't get very old. The grass grows again quickly! The ugly: whilst normally it isn't part of everyday conversation, bodily functions are not really something to be coy about. Call a spade a spade. That loo is an interesting option. Lastly: pics of Jonathan in dungarees, straw hat and pitchfork and Elsa in flowery dress showing off garden produce? Nah
To each his own, of course, but to take out those glorious nasturtiums is sad. Especially as they are not just a visual delight, but a culinary one as well, at the same time enhancing the looks of salads, sandwiches ... They contain tons of vitamin C. The leaves, put on wounds, act as an antiseptic. Anecdotal evidence praises them as useful against urinary infections, coughs and bronchitis.
Only in South Africa - builders carefully leaving the windows wrapped when installing them. Definitely deja vu there. We call them songololos, perhaps it's a patois thing, the "sh" or "s". Wikipedia informs that they get to 33.5cm (!!!). I'm glad to say none of those ever crossed my path. Every so often while watching your labours the first vision of the house comes to mind and one can only marvel at your a achievements .
😳 You are amazing!
Watching from the beginning
New subscriber here. I ❤ what you are doing! And I am in awe of you and this journey that began in what appeared to be “the worst circumstances”. Just look at how far you have come already 😉🫶🏻
Maybe you are inexperienced, but you are certainly undaunted. Tackling tasks like tiling, installing a shower and all the other myriad things you managed to do - admirable!
At times you must have felt really downcast, that is an intimidating load of work to tackle, especially when one is only sporadically on site. Despite all that, it was beginning to take shape!
OMW I dread to think what that toilet looked like with no cistern. Poverty is one thing, filth is quite another.
Squatters can be a real problem - but this case is truly horrendous. What you accomplished is a short time must have been backbreaking work, quite apart from the fact that there was nauseating and repulsive debris to be removed. One could only wish you sterkte!
Hurray for algorithms - this is a serendipitous find! And hats off to the stadjapies on their journey to become plaasjapies 😊 Now for the next video
Absolutely love that you guys are following your dreams. Sometimes it'll be difficult but it will always be worth it.
We see that you guys are going to be doing the same! Fantastic - looking forward to seeing some videos on your channel - we've just subscribed. Yes, it can be tough at times, but the good outweighs the bad tenfold. Good luck on your journey - please post some videos!
Is that house you photographed in Kleinbaai?
That was a house I photographed and did some videography for a company called "Salted Fynbos Accommodation" which basically rents out holiday accommodation. This particular house was in Romansbaai Estate.
I farmed pigs chickens and milk cows for a while, brought a runt home for wifey, it took over, had to give it to a touch farm
I think the difference with us is that Fanie has his bigger sister (Dolly) which puts him in his place when he tries to become top hog. Make no mistake, Fanie has an attitude of note but its great that Dolly reminds him that he is lower in the pecking order. We'll see how it goes, but so far so good!
Get n few lambs and donkey and you've got yourself a petting farm(not a homestead)......could make some money. Good luck
Hmmm, maybe something to think about - but at the moment - NO MORE ANIMALS....for now. We need to start looking at gardening in the future. Thanks for watching!!
@@overberghomesteading I can give u a few tips if you want. Grow food thats underground ( it stays good underground, even after the plants have died above ground) like potatoes, arrowroot, Jerusalem artichoke, sweet potatoes. You even get an edible Dhalia. All of these we eat like potatoes. I'm not sure what you can get in South Africa. Medicinal herbs is a must like oregano ( natural antibiotics), stinging nettle, sage, calandula, Echinacea, cayenne pepper ......too many to name. Its also good to invest in a dehydrator and a pressure canner. Enjoy
Alright, back to finish what I started watching, interesting journey. I sometimes look at our journey and think, "What did we get ourselves into." One thing TH-cam videos will never show is the hard that goes into homesteading. Enjoy the journey.
Hi there, thanks so much for watching! Yes exactly - we thought the same thing a few months ago 😁 There are sooo many projects that need to be done in between work and now the pets. But we're loving it (most of the time 😆)
@@overberghomesteading Its also making the videos and then the editing in-between which is a full time job on its own.
@@remotecontrolfarmer To be honest, its as you say. To try and create content remotely worth watching on TH-cam does take forever, the filming and then the editing, adding music etc etc. is extremely time consuming. Sometimes we'd get started on a project and think halfway through, we should have filmed that 😆Anyway, we soldier on!
This was absolutely fantastic, thank you for sharing your beautiful daily lives, filled with so much joy and love which only animals can provide. Our favourites have to be Dolly and Fanie. 🐖🐖😍 We were totally enthralled when we saw (who we now know was) Dolly grazing in the garden as we drove past about three weeks ago and immediately fell in love. Keep doing what you're doing, you're lucky to call Baardskeerdersbos your beautiful home!
Thanks very much! Yes, we must admit, we do live in a lovely little village. Thanks again for the great video on our whole area. We've sent the link to various friends and family to show them where we live. Enjoy the rest of your travels and drive safe!
How wonderful to bump into Curtis and Sonia, here 😊🫶🏻
Your video came up on my feed this morning, and I liked what you did and started watching from the beginning. ❤️🌹🐝
Hi there, welcome to our journey and thanks for watching!
hahaaa thats fantastically funny. I know of a retired couple from Sydney Australia that were planning to move to Burny Island, Tasmania with their 4 Irish hounds. But during the film fever of Babe, they decided to buy a 'miniature' pig. It was obviously not a 'miniature' breed. 🤪So to move the 350kg pet pig to Bruny Island they had to rent a cessna plane to fly 'dad' and a sedated pig down.🤫🤪🥰🥰🥰 The dogs died first of old age. They lived happily ever after until another grave had to be dug 😭
Oh man what a beautiful life. Just love you and your wife and all your babies. 🥰
Thanks so much for watching - must say, we do love it here!
What a challenge it has been. Fabulous to see the progress. Lovely countryside. Really enjoying your channel.
I wonder why do you make pigs pets in a homestead?
We're a bit strange like that. Normal people will get a dog or a cat - but we chose piggies - and they're awesome.
@@overberghomesteading❤
let me bookmark to watch later after church. 😂 Due to name giving i don't think Dolly will ever be bacon😂
Lol, no definitely not - they will be our pets forever 😂
I got so excited when I saw this video. I kept checking for your content. I'm glad you are back and thriving. Dolly and Fannie are so adorable 🥰.
Hi there! Thanks so much, yes we love our little piggies 😊
Hi there, really happy to see you guys doing so well. Such cute piggies. I asume that they will just be pets? All the best, cant wait for the next video.
Hi Louwrens, thanks so much, yes we're carrying on this side. Yes, Dolly and Fanie will definitely just be pets 👍🏻
Glad to see you back. I love your piggy kids ❤❤
Thanks so much! Yes, we love our little piggy kids - they drive us nuts sometimes but we love them to bits anyways!
Great going. I love to watch these kinds of these videos. Grid 1 and 3 we overcame by not starting on that journey. On the solar one, we have bought the components, we just need a house to put it onto. All the best going forward. I shall be following your journey.
Hey guys where are you ....?
Watching with interest from Durbs
Hi there, i really enjoy your channel. Found it earlier today and whatched through all your videos. Quick questions, how large is the property that you bought and for how much did you buy it for. Also how much is your budget. With thanks
Hi Louwrens! Thanks for watching - much appreciated! Unfortunately their are a few things we'd rather not make public but what we can say is that we got the property at way below market value due to the "tenant" that took us close on 6 months to be removed. The plot in total is 3000m2 - more than enough for what we want to achieve as Homesteaders. New video coming soon!
@@overberghomesteading Can't wait for the new video. Currently watching Millennial Homesteader. Very intersting. Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.
@@louwrenserasmus202 Excellent! We really enjoy @Millennialhomesteader content - always an inspiration for us. Enjoy!
Missing you guys! Please come back with more content?

Well done guys. We have been homesteading for 8 to 10 years now. Living a self sufficient live is so satisfying. We resently moved to a smaller place and starting over.
Thanks very much for watching! Well as you can see we are newbies (Stadsjapies!) at this taking it one step at a time but loving it. Look forward to seeing more content from your channel - we need to learn from the experts!!! More videos please!
