Overberg Homesteading
South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 ก.พ. 2023
We're a normal couple with a dream to become more self sufficient and self reliant on a daily basis. We've bought a property in the beautiful Overberg region of the Western Cape which we are turning into a small homestead and will hopefully be there permanently in the near future.
Join us in our journey as we make this dream of living off the grid a reality.

Building a Homestead In South Africa - We've Lost Control Of The Homestead, Urgent Chicken Run Build
In this Homestead update we admit how the chickens have taken over. There's poop everywhere, we're losing out on eggs and its putting both of us in a "Fowl" mood. New chicken coops and runs are definitely needed to get the birds under control.
It's time to get this Homestead back on track otherwise we are both going to lose our minds. Join us for another edition on the funny farm!

Building A Homestead In South Africa | Our Lives Have Changed Drastically | Overberg Off Grid Living
มุมมอง 5K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Building a homestead in South Africa is not easy, and we've found this out quite early in our journey to become more self sustaining and self sufficient. Now, add a few little farm animals (Pets more like it..) and things get quite a bit more complicated. We've done just that, and now our lives which were pretty much carefree and "lock up and go" have changed to the complete opposite. So join u...
Building A Homestead In South Africa | Getting Off 3 Grids
มุมมอง 7K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we share our journey of pursuing a more off grid lifestyle in South Africa particularly as we build our humble little homestead. We cover the most important "Grids" we want to be free from initially, and hopefully will achieve them all soon. Thanks to everyone who is following our journey - it's slow progress at the moment but we are always moving forward. It seems like a lot of p...
Building a Homestead In South Africa - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
มุมมอง 4.1Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video we share our experiences over the last few weeks, what's taken place in our lives and why we haven't posted an update in a while. So there's good news, bad news and an ugly part unfortunately! We've faced numerous challenges over the last few months so much so that we started questioning whether we were doing the right thing in pursuing a more self sufficient and off grid lifestyl...
We're Finally Going Off-Grid!

We finally got the Solar Panels to the Homestead after being stored in a garage for over a year and our Solar Geyser is also now installed! In order to keep Elsa happy, I needed to give the bathroom priority attention which involved tiling the shower floor and building the shower. After a bit of a battle, we eventually got it all done and I once again have a "Happy wife and a happy life." 😂 #ho...
Dover Stoves - Cold Fronts - And the best Chicken & Bacon Potjie we've ever made.
มุมมอง 2.4Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video we install our Wood Burning Dover Stove on our Homestead we are busy building in the Overberg region of South Africa. We were very keen to test the stove out so we decided to cook and share our first meal on it with you. And dam, this chicken dish we made came out beautifully. Definitely give it a try.

After a good few months on the homestead we are busy building, we decided to make a video of our whole property and what our dreams and visions are - but we need your help! Please feel free to comment on what your would do with this piece of land if it was yours. We have a small blank canvas at the moment which we will start getting into once we have all the basics in the house sorted. Look for...
The House Is Starting To Take Shape - Despite Bad Builders and Songololos!
มุมมอง 1.5Kปีที่แล้ว
On this trip to the homestead to be, we finally get the majority of the interior walls painted and have to deal with the builders mess ups which in our opinion should never have taken place. The progress on the property is slow but at least its consistent and our little house is finally starting to look and feel like a home. However, there is still soooo much to do - but we soldier on on our jo...
Building a homestead in South Africa - Have we bitten off more than we can chew?
มุมมอง 3.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Elsa and I had to make some tough decisions over our December break with regards to our dream of building our off-grid homestead here in South Africa. It was vital however for us to do what we did, even though it eats into our very little pot of finances available for this project considering all the other items that still need to be done. Oh well, we took the plunge and there's no turning back...
Our first day on the Homestead and it was HORRIBLE!

In this video we share our challenges and journey to eventually get on to our property we bought way back in June 2022, the absolute mess we found and the challenges we face of getting our homestead started. Nothing could have prepared us for what we found!

Homesteading in South Africa | Our Journey
I see what you are doing. Bacon seeds and chicken! You are prepping for that first recipe you showed us, right? Is that the big twist? Great to see a ZA version of this. I'd really like to see where you source your hardware stuff from, given that the US seems to be able to get everything, but we are stuck with the dregs of hardware supplies, even in Joburg.
You can make an ice cream with that in😮
Hi. I also build my coops with stuff that's available. I believe re-purposing is part and parcel of homesteading, without going maplotter. Chickens are fairly easy. Just a pointer on the roosting bars: chickens prefer to sleep with their feet flat, rather than clinging to a bar. For standard chickens, that would require a roosting bar of 5cm width, with rounded edges. Wrt nesting coops. The ladies like to have privacy - & time to do their thing in leisure. So: rule of thumb is, one nesting coop per every three hens + one extra. For standard chickens (not bantams), that means a box measuring 40X40X40cm. Hanging a curtain in front, realy tickles their fancy. Here I've even re-purposed old frost covers... Happy homesteading.😉
😋🍗🐓
If you want to get rid of some of those chickens I will happily take some from you! Looking to start a chicken coop for eggs--starting a homestead also.
All the chickens are properly housed and under control now - happily laying eggs and not pooping on my stoep any longer, so think we'll hang on to them 😁 Good luck with your homesteading journey and thanks for watching!
How do you wear a jersey in this heat wave 😅😅😱
LOL, this weather is crazy. I'm sitting here in December with that same jersey on this morning! 🙈😂
Hi from Montagu, all the best, may you spend many happy years there 😊
Welcome to plot life......i had hens....1laid eggs on dofa next tp bull terrier and staffie. The other on 😂my 😂our bed😂😂😂
Oh my goodness 😂 But we have piggies on our beds in the morning.....
Long drop. Is much better with the method of adding composting materials after every drop. Besides a sceptic tank is way more practical if you have good rain water catchment. Why live in the dark ages.
Do you drive a donkey cart around or do you have car.
It's not home steadying in SA it's maploting. 😄 we're not Americans.
Agreed
Flip, you hit the nail on the head here 😂 I keep telling Elsa that we are no more than "Maplotters". Those Americans are next level man!
Ok, Elsa and I just had a chat - I think in SA we should be called "Maplotsteaders" What do you think? 😁
I do disagree. Maplotter, is having a junk car sitting under the apricot tree, with the enjin hanging in the tree. It's homesteading the kômmen (met-'n-kappie-op-die-"o") way. Junk piling up everywhere. It's a choice.
I laughed so much with the "fowl mood" pun/neology! OMG you have a beautiful plot! Wow!
Definitely need a good laugh now and then! 😄 Thanks for watching!
New Subbie. Watching from London, UK. 😅😅😅😅 I died with laughter, you're hilarious. Thank you for your wit and dry humour, just what the doctor order after a VERY STRESSFUL afternoon at work- bless you. Sidenote, I'm actually coming to South Africa at the end of February for 3 weeks, I'm exploring the idea of relocating to SA and setting up a small homestead. If you have any ideas or real esatate websites, I should look at- that would be so greatly appreciated. I have been investigating on the web, but its always better when one can converses with folks on tne ground, who are LIVING IT. Keep up the excellent work/ beautiful content. 😊
A very good morning to you and thanks for the compliments and watching our shenanigans here while we try and build our homestead! The most popular site used by estate agents is probably Property24.co.za and I would recommend looking around in the Western Cape region. It's the most well run (and most stable province) and an absolutely beautiful part of the country. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of the ride here with us on the channel!
We had three groups of different breeds of chickens at one stage and five of them decided that my car's roof was the best roosting spot. My car looked like a chicken coop for a long time until we contained that little challenge. I know your frustration with chicken poop everywhere, especially when you walk barefoot and step in a fresh one... For their own safety from predators all our chickens are now behind lock and key.
Had to laugh at that one - the top of your car being the best roosting spot 😂 and yes, barefoot wasn't an option here before either...
It's so nice to see other South Africans homesteading! I also have a naughty chicken!
We're trying 😁 All our chickens are naughty!!!
@overberghomesteading I'm learning as I go. But so we go and we grow, I'm in the Freestate BTW.
Is it possible to show us more how you build things. Extra ideas can help other people too
Thanks for watching and yes, others have also mentioned that. I always get stuck into a project and think, dam, I should've filmed that and then it's too late. Lol, will definitely keep it in mind going forward.
The chickens have been eating the insects. Now they are going to miss out on that.
Yes, unfortunately so. But we've decided to let them all out every Friday to roam the plot and get some nice exercise at least - and some of those insects. 👍🏻 We call it Free Range Friday 😆
What also works, is letting them out an hour or 2 before sunset. In 2 hours, they can get a lot of work done. By sunset, they'll return of own volition to roost - & by that time the ladies are done laying. So - no more easter-hunts!
What a blessing all those eggs!! Truly free R..EIGN..GE!!
Free R..EIGN..GE - Exactly! 😂
hahahaha😅......fowl mood
Exactly 😆😆
Hi. We are in eastern cape. Living in tents for the past 2 years. We use a 20L bucket system as well. We also work for an organization where we have installed waterless Ecosan toilets. Anyway. Our bucket system Do not smell at all. We do not urinate in our buckets. It dries very very fast without urine. You can urinate in a separate bucket and use the urine on your garden. You can do this by perhaps dosing the urine through biochar and then into your irrigation lines. We are now experimenting with this and working with the university. It was a game changer when we seperate sout fecal matter and urine as much as possible. I put the bucket one side when it full with a lid that allows for air but prevent rain getting inside. We use a mix of fine sand and broken down leaves. This contains microbial life that helps break it down. In two weeks, it’s broken down already and much lighter for us to carry down to the pit we dug. No smell when we empty. Hope this helps!
Hi we waitng for new video. ❤
Hi there! New video released on Sunday night. Enjoy!
He is so cute and he enjoys pampering a lot.The day you ignore him he gonna show you turnthrams. Pigs love being loved for just like humans❤❤😅
Absolutely love them to bits, and yes, big personalities 😆
People, only Likes allowed and very nice comments, because they are my adorable Niece and Nephew 😊
And they are soooo looking forward to seeing their Tannie soon! 😆
You can feed them your fruit that has gone off, as well as milk that has gone sour....or whey, buttermilk etc
Good tip, we haven't tried that yet!
Why not empty the buckets individually, instead of waiting untl you have 11 buckets.... do not understand the rational in that.
In the beginning we had the toilet and buckets, but nowhere to compost. So the buckets accumulated until we got the composting section built and then we emptied and cleaned them all from there. I suppose we've just stuck with that system. Some people have also commented that they empty their buckets more regularly - we may try that in the future.
Hi please upload everyweek. I love watching farms, homesteads grow. I always come back to you All homesteaders farmers back yard gargening. I'm here to stay😮
We're so glad you're here - we'll try our best!
I'm so glad I found your channel I liked and subscribed. I hope trying to get off grid and municipal water and grow food as soon as possible. 🎉❤
Welcome aboard - glad you're enjoying the channel!
I stumbled on this video! What a great potential! It is a clean canvas except for the few buildings. I will definately design it according to permaculture standards... Plant the water first! Get a proper permaculture design if possible, include a veggie garden with/and a herb garden close to the kitchen, a foodforest, compost 'factory', chickens to support the compost factory and to clear the veggie garden from pests before plantibg again... Incorporate a chicken tractor into your vegetable garden to save you lots of pests, money and time.. Invest in a green house so you can plant seeds... Seedlings has become extremely expensive to buy! I'll have a space in the garden to relax... Have a small indigenous pocket forest to draw wildlife to the property... Have a bee-hive or two, plant flowers... I'm not sure if the land will support a cow during summer? What a great opportuninity for you and your wife! Enjoy the journey!
Thanks for all the great suggestions! Much appreciated and thanks for watching!
I may or may not have binged all your videos. I am done now. Figured out where you guys are based. (The art route gave it away). This video reminded me a lot about an Offgrid wit Doug and Stacy video they did a while back on the same topic. He leaves his buckets for a long time before throwing it on the heap. (They have a lot of buckets) I wonder if that will make a difference to the smell. That being said, it doesn't get very hot there like it does around here. Thanks for the crappy video.
I forgot to add, some people separate their number 1s and number 2s. Apparently it is the urine that makes everything else keep its smell (Don't ask me how it works) I believe Rob Greenfield spoke about this. I believe people use funnels in the front for the urine, Which is then diverted to a separate bottle. You can use this in your garden when watered down.
Yes, we watched that same Doug and Stacy video a while back and thats actually where we got our inspiration from to do the compost toilet, and then also leave the buckets until they're all full and then do the emptying. Not sure if emptying more regularly will affect the smell - think it will still be vile whichever way we do it. Thanks for watching!
2 little piggies, that's not Fanie... that's serious.
Hi Jonathan. We're up in Heidelberg Gauteng and began our self sustainability adventure 14 years ago. Been living on the farm now for 10 years now and never had municipal power or water from day 1. We used sawdust toilets for many years before we got our septic tank going. Still use them here and there and tend to build up the bucket collection until we just have to empty them. Then we spend a crappy morning doing them all at once And until we empty them we leave them (black buckets, nogal) out in the sun to cook. Not sure if it's better to do it fresh or when they've been left out in the sun for a few months. We just layer a well out of the way open compost heap with grass cuttings and a top scraping from the sheep enclosure to cover it all. Two years and it's beautiful compost. A good book to get all the basics is The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins. I did find a free download copy on the internet somewhere a while ago, can't remember where though. Happy homesteading.
Hi there! Yes, not too sure whats best at the moment - to leave the buckets out until we have to empty them all or do them one by one as they fill up. To empty and clean all our buckets at once is working for us for now - looking forward to compost in the future! Thanks for watching.
We are relatively new to the Overberg/ Overstrand region where did you find a place that sells lace curtains?? :O
Hi there! We bought it from a company called "Fabric Centre" opposite Builders Warehouse in Somerset West.
@@overberghomesteading Okay, thanks for the reply. That is not too far out. We are on a farm between Botriver and Kleinmond. I am working my way through your playlist to try and figure out where you are, but my money is on Tessies. We have friends there as well. Beautiful area. All the best with your journey. :)
@@gordonthomson2183 Ok great, glad we could help. Tessies, not quite but not far off...😁
Really enjoyed this video 😂 great job of turn a crappy situation into a fruitful one...keep it up 🌻
LOL, thanks and thanks for watching, hope you're well on the way to recovery after your surgery 🤟
Beatifull.
