- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Nice scoop! It can also be used to scoop big pots of pasta.
You could scoop a mountain of linguini!
Powerful group of Michigan rockhounders. Michigan proud! Knowledge evident🥰
I’ll second that! Would be great to tag along with that group and soak up their experience. They’ve done a lot of tumbling with those examples we saw. Just eyeballing it and feeling the weight of it they could tell if it would shine up or not.
It's still just a guess in some cases. I'm going through all my tumbles from last summer right now and I did have several duds.
@@MichiganRocks It’s been so hot in the desert I haven’t been able to get out so I spent one of my weekends doing the same. I culled my rough down by about a third. Can’t believe some of the stuff I brought home. Cold water agates is a new term for me. I see a consistency in what they are picking up. What did they say they tumble out like?
@@Gene.Guazzo I don't think we discussed how they tumble.
Nancy and I were on a Lake Superior beach today and were cold even with sweatshirts on.
That lightning stone, looks like a turtle shell.🙂
Not as much as Petoskey stones do. th-cam.com/users/shorts2MVTZq0DQew
Cool finds! Nice to see different stones! And yooperlites!
I agree! It was fun to find different stuff for a change.
It seems you and I have switched places, normally I walk the SW Michigan beaches, but this week I am way up north.
Nice finds, thanks for bringing us along. I’m looking forward to walking the beaches when I get back home.
I live in SW Michigan and just got back from the Keweenaw! We’re all playing musical chairs with our locations in Michigan! 🤣
You have to mix it up once in awhile, don't you? It's fun to see different kinds of rocks in new places.
@@MichiganRocks it really is! That was my first time in the Keweenaw. I can’t wait to go back. We also made a trip to an abandoned quarry and mined for greenstone! It’s amazing the different rocks and minerals you can find sprinkled throughout Michigan.
@@TenSeventeen what’s your favorite SW beach for rock hunting? We were just up from indiana and rock hunting in Glenn because we couldn’t find a rock beach near South Haven. We hope to go again in the fall or spring.
@@brightpurpleviking I’ve spent most of my time walking along warren dunes state park, farther south than south haven. The geology isn’t anything special, but there is a glacial moraine that intersects Lake Michigan just north of the park property, leads to some interesting finds.
Love that scoop, lightweight and expandable! The transformation on the polished petoskey stone incredible! I like how it was from a different angle than the stones you usually show but both are beautiful in their own way❤
Yes, the side view, as I call it, is not what is usually emphasized.
I was just there this past weekend! We found some amazing finds. We found some excellent lightning stones, one lightning stone that had a two inch ammonite fossilized in it, one very tiny pudding stone, and some antique blue and white China chunks. Found some beautiful petosky stones. There was one rock that I’ve never seen before. It is dark black and had nice chunks of a pale sulfur green-yellow. So strange! No clue what it is. Also…we learned a thing or two about appropriate foot ware. Ouch! We wore crocs thinking we could clean them out easily. Wished we had boots instead.
The black and green one might be porphyritic basalt. It sounds like something I find quite often.
The stones you polished look amazing. I still need to find myself a lightning stone.
They're all over the beach in fennville.
The lightning stone polished beautifully!
Yes, they shine up really well.
Lots of cool finds. I have had to turn my attention to starting up and running my cat rescue. But I will get back out there one of these days and go rockhounding again. I do miss it so.
Bless you so needed! My daughter saved 6 littles in the rain, no one wants to adopt, we have to put them out! All male. Docs wont fix for lower price.
@@juneyshu6197maybe your local animal shelter....I sure hope they can help you.... I have heard of some shelters actually doing it for free so anyway I hope you have a place like that unless you for at least getting them out of that really bad storm❤
Hello Rob,
It's great to see you made it to my area in Michigan! I know the areas well that you were looking for your rocks!
I enjoyed your area of the state. I don't make it down that way very often.
Thumbs up for Chuck Parks. The scoops are also good golf ball retrievers in ponds.

This was fun. Never thought about rock hunting at night. Thanks for taking us along
Hunting for Yooperlites has become pretty popular.
I and my wife were just in south haven on monday! We found a couple lightning stones but nothing like the amount you showed! I had no idea yupper lights were this far south either!!
Now you know!
I wish I had more vacation from work. Great finds. Cheers from the 920 of Wisconsin
That lightning stone you polished up is amazing!
I'm just uploading video of another one I just polished. It looks really good too.
@@MichiganRocks Sweet! Can't wait to see it!
I live in SW MI and find amazing things right in the yards around the house: Pudding stones, lightning stones, cold-water agate (as I learned the ID while viewing this video), all kinds of fossils including several river clams and corals, jaspers, and today a solid true black stone that I have yet to ID, and oh yeah, what I think is banded chert. And a Petoskey stone. I sure wish I knew more about the stones I've collected. Running out of room for them ;-).
Sounds like a fun yard!
Fossililous, lightning stones stripey rocks, petoskey....love our beautiful lake Michigan. Too many choices!
Happy hounding, one and all ❤🎉
I really love uv rocks and minerals. Septarian and yoopers are among my favorites. Nice video Rob.
Thanks!
Another great day at the beach!
Some awesome looking rocks
Great video! Everytime I have looked in that area I always find interesting rocks.
I was pleased to find some things different than what I normally find.
Wow that first lightning stone shined up beautifully 🤩
Excellent! What a great day of rockhounding and night! I found my first tiny pudding stone on lake Erie in Presque isle , Pennsylvania. I was surprised and excited. Didn't know they'd be that far south and in Erie. Thank you again for a wonderful video.
That's great!
What a cool day! I imagine that was a really good time. The Lightning Stone you polished at the beginning, looking at the stone with it's cake looking texture as it meets the wheel messes with the brain.... not the reaction your mind gets you ready to see and hear! lol Great video, thank you for sharing!
That's funny, because with the rock in hand, it reacts pretty much exactly as expected.
just seeing it, my mind expected to see it just rip the brown right off! lol But, it sure made for a beautiful stone afterwards fer sure!
🧐You're in my neck of the woods, and I had no idea I could find Yooperlights down here on the beach! I know what I'll be doing here pretty soon! Also, thank you for helping me to identify other rocks on the beach as well. I am a total rockhound, and am always finding cool rocks, but never know what they are.
Go get those Yooperlites!
Very nice, I’ve heard that there was Yooperlites down that way.
Me too, but this was the first I have actually seen them for myself.
Epic hunt day!
Thank you 🙂
Hey that’s where my wife and I go. We are not to far. Never tried the yooper light hunt there. We will now. Thanks.
Good luck!
Great stones. I like the rock scoop, although I'd prefer it in metal because I'm constantly using mine to pry rocks with, I'd be afraid of breaking that one.
Great rock hunting and fun guests too!
Mine is a metal spoon on a piece of PVC, but that's not good for prying either.
@@MichiganRocks I went through a couple spoons. Bent them back and forth too many times and snapped them. I found a heavy duty one, it's on a piece of cedar now and I can pry stuff now without it bending. Still rocks fall off of it, I like his scoop design and can see why it would be better than most. Oh and I do like that it folds, mine doesn't so every so often it ends up sitting propped up next to my garage and I forget it. I might have to get one just to leave it in the car for days when I'm scatterbrained.
Sublime exploration. Thank you
Old Disabled House Bound Dusty Rusty Rockhound here: That was fun! You're still the "shine" king... look at those mirror finishes!
I love yooperlites!
I recognize that Glenn beach! Found quite a few yooperlites there myself.
WOW!..cool video Rob!...you had my immediate attention when the unakite came on the screen. Thats a good one! One of my most favorite spots up near and around this area I can find specimens equal to that one. Fun to polish! Sorry but I had to fast forward through the spider scene, you had my skin crawling something fierce. Thanks buddy...lol. Great yooperlite and that uranium glass are pretty neat!. Thanks for sharing all this
It's funny what one person is creeped out by but the next thinks it's cool. I don't like spiders crawling on me because I know they bite, but otherwise it wouldn't bother me. Same with snakes. I love how they move. I did a video in a cave this winter and I was really surprised how many people couldn't watch it because they were claustrophobic. I found the cave really, really relaxing because of how quiet it was.
@@MichiganRocks I like caves too!..mammoth caves and the Luray caverns were really neat. I'd love to explore some old caves out west some day.
@@manisteerocks7092 I have been to both of those. Of course, I only saw a tiny bit of Mammoth.
Hello Caseville Michigan. Wolverines.🇺🇸🌄
Very beautiful finds Rob minus the spiders 😂
I like the spiders.
@@MichiganRocks I do when they are in the day time but when they glow nope not a fan when Andrew and I went to Michigan on Lake Superior at night to find Yooperlite saw a glowing spider jumped out in front of me and screamed and I’m sure other people heard me 😂

I realy love the sound of the waves on the beach, i wish i could be there! I was wondering if this scoopy tool existed, well yes! Great find! Greetings from Quebec, Canada!
Kingsley North also sells an aluminum scoop. I have seen all kinds of homemade scoops on the beach too.
Very nice!
Hi Rob 👋😃👍 Rob I love ROCK'S 🪨❤️👍😃
Hi Sharon.
I’m in South Haven area and I had no idea we had Yooperlites! Time to buy a black light flashlight!!
This was my first time hunting Yooperlites in Lake Michigan.
I grew up in South Haven so these videos are great
I have a couple others from the area coming up.
Ironically, I recently met Chuck at the Indian Mounds Rock Swap / Tailgate event last month. He was helping someone ID a piece of what you and I know as Lake Superior Magnatite... with all of those crazy sections / shapes. I was going to send him a photo of one of my favorite pieces I collected from the mouth of the Two Hearted River... but I think I lost his business card during my trip out West.
I like those geometric magnetites. I just took one out of the tumbler, though, and it didn't tumble well at all.
10:09-10:23 those are geodized and silicified crinoid calyx’s! My favorite to find down here!
They don't look at all like crinoid calyxes I have seen before.
There are some unusual Geological anomalies in that area
I am still so jealous!! I need to come North! I love uranium glass too.

the polished lightening stone was gorgeous! the stripey guy was really interesting. the night hunt was so cool. the stones with orange peeking out could’ve been dragon eggs!
They always look like glowing hot embers to me.
@@MichiganRocks yes i can see that
Dude! I’m in south haven right now! I just got a bunch of lightning stones!
Those are fun, aren't they? At least they're fun for me because we don't have them on the beaches I normally go to.
How'd I miss this one? Never even knew about "lightening stones"?! Next time I go (hopefully before the first squalls) I'll be looking for some, hell, if I see the right one for sale, I'll buy it!
They're pretty cool and polish up really nice. Someone just sent me a huge one that I can't wait to polish.
Show it after you do! You had one that looked like hieroglyphics (is that the right word?) on the outside I thought was spectacular before you cut it. looked like deer and native Indians from long ago scratched into a cave wall?!
Sweet thumbnail photo! You've gotten good at beech-rock-photo composition. The colorful glass adds some pop.
I actually made three thumbnails that are all being tested right now using TH-cam's new testing feature. They're all virtually tied right now.
That Fossil Hash was AMAZING! (6:01)
I believe that 3:18 is slag glass 😊 Lots in the area.
Ok, we found some of that the day before that we recognized as slag glass.
I have sooo many lightning stones from South Haven beaches. They look so cool after polishing.
They sure do!
Many Yoopers here in SE MA. I send all my first timer rock tumblers to you! Thanks Rob Great info and entertainment!
I think someone else told me the same thing. Apparently they're not just from Michigan.
@@MichiganRocks It may have been me/ I have a beauty that I am working on from Wells Beach Maine. Thanks for the show!

Can you tumble lightning stones?
I haven't tried. They are pretty soft, so it might be challenging.
The rocks here are very interesting. 16:50
Cool.
Nice!!!
I think another episode of the Box Of Rocks series would be cool video!
I'm working on it. I just got my rocks from last summer finished. Yesterday I started the long process of trying to match up the finished rocks with their before pictures. It's a long and difficult process. Hopefully I can get a Rocks in a Box video out soon.
I want more info on the DIY UV light. that thing is cool looking.
I can't help you with that, but maybe Chris can. @adventurecooper
Very nice
I would love to find a lightning stone!
That whole area has them. They're pretty common there.
I’m in the Saint Joseph area and this is one of my favorite beaches to go to! 🤗
It was a fun spot. Lots of great stuff there.
What’s the name of the beach!?
@@stephalyse98 Chris didn't want me to share the name of the first beach. The one we went to after dark was right next the the river in Glenn.
Thought I recognised Chuck; he's a member of the Copper Country Rock & Mineral Club as well.
Cold water agates do not solely come from fossils; they can also form simple nodules in carbonate rocks.
On the "feldspar", what wavelength light was being used?
Someone else told me the same thing about cold water agates. She was from Wisconsin and sent me pictures of several really nice ones with no fossil parts at all.
I just texted Chris and he said all his lights are 365nm, same as mine.
OMG ~ I'm close enough to actually go there & hunt for those Yooperlites.. I even have a UV flashlight.. I am so Jealous.. Thanks for sharing this video with us.. My laptop is as close as I will get..
Wait, if you're close enough to go there, then why are you satisfied with just watching on your laptop?
So much fun again, even enjoyed the spiders 🕷️! Would love to get one of those cabbing machines like you have. How long did it take to polish up the two you showed here?
If I hadn't been filming, maybe 20 minutes each.
@@MichiganRocks Not bad at all for such a nice polish, good job!👍
I heard wholly rock. First thing that came to mind was a great gift for say a minister or pastor. LOL
Holey, not holy.
I was rock hounding in the same area between South Haven and Saugatuck. I was there July 1st, 3rd, 5th. I Hit Pier Cove, Pilgrim Haven, Deer Lick Creek, Van Buren State Park, and the surrounding areas. Maybe we were at the same beaches! Anyway, I found a variety of amazing rocks and fossils! Another thing you can find on SW Michigan beaches is lake coal. Yes real coal. Since it is so light weight, it doesn't dwell in, at, or near the water. It is found away from the water floating on the sand. It stands out from wood charcoal, as it has a shiny luster, and is heavier. Anyway, glad you came to the area, and happy hunting
I find coal up here on Lake Huron too. I'm pretty sure it is from ships or one of the industries that burns or burned coal in the past. I find it quite often at Rockport, which is an old quarry.
Hello Rob, I’m sorry I’ve been late checking in lately. Just been incredibly busy. Would you believe at my Indiana home I’m not all that far away from the South Haven area and have never been rock hunting there but my sister frequents that area quite a bit. So I’ve yet to find my first lightning stone. I didn’t realize that Yooperlites were found down in this area either. That was a good video!
So what you're saying is that I just gave you a reason to be even busier? Get up to South Haven and do some rock hunting!
polishing one of the finds mid video is a nice idea.
Thanks. With softer rocks like lightning stone, I can do that. I can do it with harder rocks too, but I'd rather tumble those.
You missed my favorite SW Michigan lightning stone beach. Literally hundreds of them!
There were probably hundreds of them at this beach. Jonathan and I stayed at Van Buren State Park and looked there too. We found a few, but not many. I don't know if that's because they are too picked over there or if that's a little too far south.
This was cool. Can you mention which beach near South Haven? Thank you.
Chris wanted to keep that information off the Internet. I think most of the beaches in that area have at least some. Jonathan and I found a few at Van Buren State Park earlier that day.
Yooperlites - I learn something new every time I watch your videos! Those are just amazing! What makes the orange light up? Also, the purple & blue colors when that Feldspar was lit up was really gorgeous!!! The glow of the white stone - what is it?
Great video!
Yooperlites are a rock called syenite and the glowing part is sodalite. I'm not sure what those other two rocks were.
Well now I’m going to have to get me a UV light & check out my sodalite. I’ve got quite a bit of that!
@@leeannmettlach2412 I have other sodalite that doesn't fluoresce like this.
@@MichiganRocks Mine are just your std variety, I guess I’ll hold off on the UV light. Thanks for telling me that. I wonder what the difference is? Something with the combination of the Yooperlite?
@@leeannmettlach2412 Most cheap lights are not 365 nm. The good lights also have a filter to filter out the non-UV light.

I assume you do your own videos do you have a recommendation for video editing software? Geoscoop looks like a good Scoop option.
HISEA gave me a pair of waders. I don't necessarily recommend them. I'm 6' 2" tall and the waders were too short for me, even with the shoulder straps extended all the way. They didn't leak and seemed decent otherwise, they're just too small for me.
I have never found the perfect pair of water shoes, but the last few times out, including in this video, I wore these: www.amazon.com/YALOX-Sneakers-Comfortable-Trekking-Climbing/dp/B0CL8STR5B?pd_rd_w=x5Jyk&content-id=amzn1.sym.378a0f29-5acb-4c80-bc6e-087cd6806daf&pf_rd_p=378a0f29-5acb-4c80-bc6e-087cd6806daf&pf_rd_r=BFQT5FSH0K07EAQJBNP1&pd_rd_wg=iGjPs&pd_rd_r=63a93daa-a8bf-4cdf-94ed-8bd6685e995c&pd_rd_i=B0CL8STR5B&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_grid_rp_0_1_ec_cp_ppx_yo_dt_b_search_bia_i

Stones with the geode pockets: are those “safe” to tumble? Meaning will all the crystals fall out? Something about them makes them seem fragile.
For reference, I found a piece of banded chert, and it has these black crystals in a pocket and … ledge thingy and I want to smooth it out.
I had no idea yoopers were down there by the way.

@@ladyofjazz448 I also made a video at Rocky Gap. You're right about the sand but we found a couple rocks.
So is the cold water agate what you’ve been calling the mystery rock?
No, not at all. The rock I call mystery rock is found on Lake Superior. It contains chalcedony, but I'm not sure it's 100% chalcedony. There are usually about four different colors in it, and they're mostly dark colors. They're also not fossils.
What beach did you go to in South Haven? I'm on the hunt for lightning stones!!
Chris wanted to keep the location of the first one private, but the second beach was in Glenn. There's an access right next to the river and we found several lightning stones there. I don't think anyone took any of them either.
Great video first time watching definitely will be looking for more .I found a rock looks like it might of been a beach or shore line it's sand and pebbles with a footprint in it looks like small dog maybe the rock is about 1.5"s in diameter is there anyone out there that could maybe identify the footprint just asking thanks
I'm not going to be able to help you with footprints. I can hardly identify rocks.
Could be a new direction for the channel, filming other Rock Hounds and their finds, along the coastlines of Michigan.
I have covered a good portion of the shorelines of Michigan, but I don't always have a local rockhound to go with me. Maybe I should make more of an effort to do that.
