Man, you sure make me miss the Great Lakes! I grew up 15 miles from the eastern tip of Lake Ontario, and I sure miss it here in Omaha. 😕. It is so wonderful to hear the waves and see the waves. So I have ALWAYS loved rocks and recently my dearest friend, who also shared my seemingly mundane hobby of collecting neat rocks, passed away. I think part of my grieving process has been getting back into my love for rocks, and that lead me to your channel. Just wanted to show you some love and thank you for all the information and tips you’ve shared (I just started tumbling again, which I did in my youth); your vids have brought me a lot of smiles and comfort while I deal with everything, as well as some great education and knowledge! Looking forwards to seeing more, and if I’m ever in your area I’d love to go on a joint rock hunt! Stay blessed and rock on!
I'm always surprised by the different ways my videos have helped people. I never expected to help anyone with the grieving process. I was just sharing my love of rocks. I'm glad I could help you out and I'm sorry you lost your friend.

I fell in love with Petoskey stones I purchased in rough form online and have hand polished-originally for some rock turtles I was doing.
I'd need to know more about your general plans. This video was on Lake Superior. It would be about a four hour drive to get to a spot where you could pick up Petoskey stones. A lot of people who watch my videos don't understand how far apart some of my rock hunts are. Send me an email and I'll try to help you out. abramr@mac.com

Not sure if you’ll see this on this older video, but what beaches do you recommend for Lake Superior for rock hunting? I’m planning a trip soon and want to visit!
In the eastern U.P. anything between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point is usually good. In the Keweenaw, I like Gratiot Park, Calumet Waterworks Park, Mclain State Park, and Great Sand Bay.
There are arrowheads found in Michigan, but I haven't found any. I think the beaches would beat them up and round them off, so it's probably not the best place to look.
I'm heading that way in the middle of May and was wondering if there is somewhere reasonable to park just south of where the river drains into the lake.
There's a place that's called Perry's Landing, although it's not marked that way. It's very close to the Lake Superior State Forest Campground. There's also a big parking lot at Vermillion Point. The spot I parked isn't too bad either. If you have a car with reasonable clearance (not a Corvette) you should be fine going down the road. It's not marked, but just look for the road that's closest to the mouth of the river. It has a pretty wide entrance, but is basically a two-track.
It has different rocks. No agates, but plenty of fossils, puddingstones, and other fun stuff. Here's a video of rocks found and identified on Lake Huron. 39 Lake Huron Rocks Identified: th-cam.com/video/F_t4LC13utM/w-d-xo.html

HI Rob. can you recommend a Dremel bit that is good for hanging pendant etc? I got some junk from Amazon and they skip all over and then the coating wears off fast. love your channel, you got me into the hobby! cheers.
I don't use a Dremel much at all. I use one in the drill press attachment for drilling 1 mm holes. I have another that I use for buffing Petoskey stones with Zam and for roughing up polished surfaces that I intend to glue together. That's about it. I really wouldn't have enough experience with anything else to know what to recommend.
I am interested in making some rock eggs that are uniform in size. Wondering if you have any advice (or maybe a video) on how to do it.. It is so hard to get quality non massed produced eggs. Enjoyed the video.
I have never made an egg. Sphere machines are something you could find information on with a Google search, but eggs are more difficult to make. I have never made either.
They have a rock there called Mozarkite that is a type of chert. I know there's a lot of other chert found there too. Chert had conchoidal fractures and that's one way to help identify it. Have you ever seen a really thick piece of glass that is chipped? It chips in a roundish shape, that can look sort of like a seashell. That's conchoidal fracturing.
Btw, we're going to be in Northern Michigan later this year, either Alpena or Gaylord area. Then the U.P., looking forward to finding some agates along Lake Superior. If you have any places to suggest we go let me know.
@@robertrayle2399 Rockport Quarry near Alpena is great for fossils. The quarry is good, so is the beach, which is different in each direction. Then there are sinkholes behind the quarry. You could spend a whole day there. For agates, any beach between Grand Marias, MI and Whitefish point is good.
The roads there were fine. The road to Vermillion Point where we went later that day were not fine at all. I was a bit concerned in four wheel drive in my Jeep. I wished I had a snorkel for it, but managed to get through. You can see that next week.
I'm working on a video about the Harbor Freight tumbler which is the same thing. My plan is to run it until it dies. So far, it's been running pretty much nonstop since December with no problems.
@MichiganRocks this tumbler is a joke . I had to grind down the barrel nuts so it wouldn't unscrew and I also ground down the edges . It's working ok now
@@browntree65 I have heard lots of complaints about the durability of them. I'm hoping mine dies sooner rather than later so this video doesn't take me a year or more to make. I would like to show the problem with it, although mine is working great so far.

I have never made an egg. Sphere machines are something you could find information on with a Google search, but eggs are more difficult to make. I have never made either.
5:46 The water: "Rob needs to wet his rock"😅
Hey Rob, we're traveling and in Missouri, and I've found some stone that may be banded chert. How would one know for sure?
They have a rock there called Mozarkite that is a type of chert. I know there's a lot of other chert found there too. Chert had conchoidal fractures and that's one way to help identify it. Have you ever seen a really thick piece of glass that is chipped? It chips in a roundish shape, that can look sort of like a seashell. That's conchoidal fracturing.
That sounds like what we have, lots of it, actually. I'm looking forward to tumbling them.
I love that color.unikite 😂.. small or big i will carry it.
Does it matter what way the tumbler rolls?
Nope.
@MichiganRocks with the rotation of my leegol electric it unscrews the barrel nut
@@browntree65 That's not good.
How were the roads? I'm going through major withdrawals.
The roads there were fine. The road to Vermillion Point where we went later that day were not fine at all. I was a bit concerned in four wheel drive in my Jeep. I wished I had a snorkel for it, but managed to get through. You can see that next week.
Since nobody had said anything yet... Yes, the red things in the rock you found at 3:20 are garnets.
Thanks. Capt. Paul concurs with you.
Can you do a video about leegol electric tumblers? I have a 6lb double barrel that I had to mcgiver to make it work . It was always blowing out .
It's working ok now
Exactly. Piece of crap
@@browntree65 I have heard lots of complaints about the durability of them. I'm hoping mine dies sooner rather than later so this video doesn't take me a year or more to make. I would like to show the problem with it, although mine is working great so far.
@MichiganRocks I'm buying a lortone 6 lb double barrel next time ..thumblers tumbler is the best that I've used but they are too expensive
