    The reason why the locomotive throttles up is because when you put on the breaks after some time it releases the breaks and uses the dynamic brake system to take over so you don't overheat the brake pads . Also when you pull out of the station do not baby the throttle put balls to the wall that is how they keep to the time table

    • @bigtime7724
      @bigtime7724 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Huhn the throttle up you hear is the blended breaks it Dose not release the air breaks it just give more breaking effort from dynamic breaking.

      Train games seem to do that. Train Simulator does the same thing. Existing owners just get upgraded to the new version. My guess is it's because not much of anything really changes between versions.

    At 17:30 you accidently put the application brake back into service, which stopped the train quickly. This is also why the train's engine throttled up. Great video Squirrel, as always!

  • @anthonypecoraro5472
    @anthonypecoraro5472 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The engine rpms increasing is normal, it’s called blended braking. What happens is, the locomotive lowers the air pressure of its brakes and automatically puts the dynamic brakes on. This helps to reduce wear on the brake pads.

    The F40PH is one of my top favorites. I love the engine sound. I grew up in Chicago in the 80s living a few houses away from the train tracks and saw the F40PH Metra trains every day. I thought they stopped being made in the 90s, but I'm so glad they're still being made.

    Very cool to see my home route here. I live within a block of this line, the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit subway) line and the SFO planes take off over where I live. So to answer your question yes it can be very noisy but you get used to it over time. For the most part the train runs through industrial zones, though San Carlos just built a bunch of high end apartments right on the line, a friend lives in those apartments and with the modern build quality and materials there isn't that much train noise. I remember growing up that between the San Carlos and Redwood city stations it was decided to build the track raised so traffic could go under to reduce congestion. I look forward to seeing more videos on this line from you!

    15:46 My wife's family lived right next to the very busy Lakeshore East line in Toronto (with the trains passing on the other side of their fence as in the sim here) and honestly, you stopped noticing the trains very quickly even when they were in notch 8 accelerating hard. There was a crossing close by (close enough to hear its bells ringing) and again, you'd tune this out when sitting in the back yard or in the house with the windows open. There was an order prohibiting the trains from sounding their horns from the crossing except in an emergency, but they still had to ring their own bells as they approached.

    It's funny how people say how it must be annoying living next to a railway with locos and horns etc, and yet probably 90% of us live by roads with constant cars, lorries and buses, that never stop and that's OK. For me it's the other way round. Traffic noise is annoying, and trains don't bother me. I used to live by the main East Coast line in the UK and after a while you stopped hearing the trains as you got so used to them. So no, trains don't bother me. There are plenty other noises other than trains.

    The thing you find strange with the way the train goes and the noise the Diesel engine produces is just because Diesel engines in trains are just electric power generators. The thrust comes entirely from electrical motors.
    This happens for several reasons. Maybe the main one is that electrical motors are the only ones capable of producing the huge torque needed to start moving a train from a standstill.
    We can produce high torque from combustion engines as well but IC engines need rotation ...and to apply the kind of needed torque from a moving engine into train wheels that are still, we would need a mighty super highly resistant clutch that I suspect is not possible nor efficient to build and use.
    That's basically why all trains are electric. Some get electricity from the grid, others like the one here, produce them from big Diesel engines.
    I also know of one or other exceptions from single carriage mini-trains that are powered by Diesel without any electric traction, but I believe they're just exceptions.

    Lights need to be on bright, you can dim them once at a station but need to be put on bright when running. Also bell on when passing through a station for passenger safety. With the air, start with a minimum (7 pounds of air) and work your way up. Don’t piss all your air off at once. Horn sequence is long long short long starting at the whistle board (W). Also 2 short horns when departing 1 short once you are stopped to load passengers and 3 short when backing up. A little help from a freight railroader. Have fun!

    For the F40PH-2CAT training scenario, you have to actually hit 50mph as fast as you can after first pulling out of the initial station. Once you get over 50, that triggers an instruction to apply the brakes. It appears you have to have both of those accomplished before the first 50mph speed limit. If you do, then you'll get the instruction to stop at the next station and you should be able to complete that training scenario. The initial speed limit is 79mph, and the first 50mph speed restriction, where you merge with the adjacent track, is so close that by the time i was in the upper 40s, i didn't see the need to keep accelerating, and so i'd never get the instructions to stop at the next station! Drove me nuts, til i realized you have to go 50 (or slightly over) and trigger that brake instruction, before that first 50mph restriction....

    The red needle labeled "brake cylinder" is the independent brake. 0 PSI = full release, 72 PSI = fully applied as noted on the control stand. Using the automatic brake valve also sets the independent brakes, so you bail off the independent by pressing the independent handle down and releasing it after a few seconds. You NEVER use independent brakes to stop a train except at very low speeds for a precision stop. The automatic brakes are already self-lapping and have been for decades, you don't have to lap them. Use the white needle on the left air gauge (equalizing reservoir) to set the trainline air. The red needle on the right gauge is for locomotive brakes only and has no bearing on the brake pipe pressure.
    In other words, at 11:15 when you see the right gauge's red needle go up to about 24 PSI, that's air that's being filled in the brake cylinders of the locomotive. You should immediately bail the independent and it will drop back down to zero, but the trainline air will remain set at 100 PSI (a 10 lb. brake pipe reduction).

    The dijion station in San Jose is one of the busiest stations in the San Francisco Bay Area because you the cal train which has daily service between San Francisco and San Jose with a four train northbound from Gilroy Ca in the morning and southbound in the late afternoon on weekdays. You can easily walk to the nearest lightrail station. And there is a service between San Jose and Stockton with a connector to Sacramento. And a stop on the Amtrak coastal starlight which runs from Los Angeles to Seattle

    • @gamehulk
      @gamehulk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ackshully, it's 3 trains out of Gilroy in the morning. Same 3 coming back at 5:30, 7:15, and 7:48. The 6:07 and the 7:07 is timed to let you catch the baby bullet to SFO, saves a half hour. I like the 6:27 because it's kind of an express train all the way up to Redwood, no need to transfer to the bullet for me.
      There's a close lightrail stop to San Jose Diridon, but annoyingly it's the train that goes to east/west from Winchester to Mountain View, not the useful north/south Alum Rock/Santa Teresa train. To catch that I have to wait 10--20 mins for the Winchester train so I can transfer to the Santa Teresa train stop and wait again, or I can walk the mile in 12-15 minutes. The worst thing about all the schedules is for some reason VTA busses and trains seem to be timed so you JUST missed your train, ensuring maximum wait times!

    the locomotive's engine runs at a constant rate to provide power for the passenger cars. not sure if caltrain's locomotives have the separate power generator at the back.

    This sim looks amazing, even with the little quirks. By the way, can the font size be enlarged, in the game's UI / menus? Also, is there a limit to how far you can walk about, from the train? Thanks for sharing this. :)

      But does it still do the horrendous "motion-blur" where you get the hideous, pixelated mess on the wheels instead of actually having real motion blur? Then not provide you with an option to disable motion blur because you don't want it anyways?.... Oh nevermind, just remembered there's a hotkey for it. Of course, if it was done right to begin with, I wouldn't have noticed so much...

      @@PseudoResonance motion blur isn't really a big issue I've found. I barely ever look at the wheels and the pixelated mess around them never gets appearant till I get close to them.

      You can easiely get rid of it by editing your ini files though. I put the render distance to 5 or something and it fixed the track issues and also renders other objects further away like buildings and trees on hills.

    How do the signals look at night? Do they have any sort of halo around them as if they were projecting real light, or are they simply a fuzzy, opaque disk of color.
