The part where Akeem gives the two homeless guys some money is significant because: the two guys are the guys from Trading Places, an earlier Eddie Murphy film that you also have to watch. He wanted to give them a cameo to show his appreciation for being in their film early in his career. It was truly a uniquely sweet gesture. I didn't want you to miss the meaning of it.

Didn’t he call him Mr Mufasa, or something? I only ask bc Jones happened to be wearing a lion pelt when he said that, and I wondered “is he unaware that he voiced Mufasa, and he just called him that by coincidence?”

Fun Fact: For the movie's 30th anniversary a few years ago, an independently operated McDonald's in Chicago "dressed" as McDowell's for Halloween. The owner changed the sign, the menu and the employee uniforms. It was brilliant.
Also, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair would go on to voice Simba's parents in "The Lion King" (1994).

James Earl Jones is also Darth Vader from Star Wars. (Or at least his voice, especially these days.)
There's a line he says to Lisa's dad " Do not alert him to my presence. I'll deal with him myself" , here he gave off a real "Vader vibe" especially since it was similar to a line he said in Return of the Jedi where he told the radio operator "No, lead them to me, I'll deal with them myself."

The Queen in this movie is an amazing example of something we don't really have in a lot of movies today. She is a strong female character that is well written within the context of the story. She isn't trying to out man the men, she isn't trying to be the boss of the world, but when her cub is hurt she is willing to bring out the claws and fangs even on the one person she is supposed to be subserviently to within the tradition they both grew up in. She is an example of one of the most important things a man needs in his life; a partner that is willing to call him out on his bullshit.

James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair (RIP). The two of them made a great team because this wasn't the last time they played an African king and queen. King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi from The Lion King were voiced by these two icons a year before Madge passed away from leukemia. With or without his legendary voice, James is a mindblowing actor. Even at age 92 he's still got it.
