Poor Brendan Fraiser sure gave his ALL for this movie. Those stunts gave him neck and back problems for the rest of his career. He is an absolute CLASS ACT - and total sweetheart.

Yep. It's extremely lucky that he has a strong neck, cos the hanging scene didn't go the way they wanted it to and it very nearly killed him.

Brendan almost died during that scene. He's had back and necks issues for decades - and he's had to endure the pain of sexual abuse by a producer. His millions of dollars doesn't make that physical and emotional pain go away.

Winston was not living his best life. He was depressed as hell because the rest of his friends and squadronmates died in WWI. That's why he died with a smile on his face: he was back with the boys.

I think Brendan Fraiser has gotten the closest to any actor at recapturing the Harrison Ford Han Solo/India Jones character's vibe. Competent when he needs to be hilariously unlucky when he's not.
Also, The Mummy is the perfect mix of action, adventure and humor.

Winston, the pilot, was actually disappointed he survived the war but all his friends died. When asked to help, he asked if it would be dangerous and when told they might not survive, he was all in. He wanted to die with his boots on, so his death and the quicksand as a grave while still seated in his plane is kinda poetic.

BJ might be referring to Brendan Fraser in Encino Man. This and The Mummy Returns NEVER get old!! What you missed is that Winston, the pilot WANTED to die. He was the only survivor of his squad from the war. Thought he should've died along with them. When he said "do you really think so?" when he was told he'd probably die as a result, that was hope not fear.

39:18 Actually, this is exactly what Winston wanted. He was drowning himself in drink all the time back at the fort because he felt he didn't have any more usefulness in life. This final adventure gave him the ability to go out on a high note (in his mind). I believe Winston was extremely happy in the last minutes up until he died.

Every single thing about this movie is pure blue gold (ALALALALA!)!!! The sets, the cast, the costumes, THE SOUNDTRACK - GOLDSMITH IS A GOD! - the chemistry between literally everyone but the two leads are epic, and of course the humor! I once was stuck in one of the tunnels in Boston bringing my friend home from the airport. I drive a wrangler with the top off in the summer - I was bored and we were all stopped. I yelled "Hey O'connell, looks to me like I got all the horses!" - someone yelled back the appropriate response! This movie is one of the last true "adventure action movies" that really REALLY used the best of everything. The practical effects and effort that went into them, using CGI when needed . . . damn it time to go watch it again!

Winston drank too much since his comrades went out in a blaze of glory and buried in the sands during the Grear War except for him.
Leaving him stranded at his post in an oasis of booze and boredom since no missions were left for him until Rick and the heroes needed his help.
A detail that's missed is that he went out with a smile on his face, knowing he'd join his comrades.
Love that the heroes pause to salute Winston as he's being buried in the sands, which is what he wanted.

I love this movie! This and The Mummy Returns are excellent and I watch these two movies multiple times a year. They're my comfort movies. Also, I'm a huge fan of Brendan Fraser! My favorite thing is how much Rick protects Evie but also treats her as an equal. In fact, he often lets her take the lead. He knows he is the "muscles" so when it comes to fighting/survival, Evie defers to him but everything else, he lets Evie do her thing and happily follows. They are a team who can depend on each other 100% pretty much from the get go.
Something the movie doesn't explain is that Rick is being hanged because he was a deserter (can you blame him?) of the French Foreign Legion. The penalty was death and the warden offered to hang him for a small fee to save the Legion the trouble of doing it. And the scene was deleted but on their initial journey through the desert, they come across the skeletons of his fellow fallen soldiers from the beginning and he even quips he knows one of them.
If you pay close attention, the curator purposely set the map on fire. You could see him move it directly to the flame and then lean in and wait for it to catch fire. I remember the first time I watched, I pointed this out when others didn't notice. I thought it was juts bad/unnatural acting honestly, then it made sense later on. And when Winston died, he wanted to. He was upset that he didn't die in other battles he was in so when he did die, that's why he died with a smile.

The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie.
    Side trivia:
    1. In the scene introducing her as Ankhsunamun, Patricia Velasquez was completely nude with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply).
    2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison.
    3. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish.
    4. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster, but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move.

The one story element that bugs me is how waking the Mummy brings forth the 10 Plagues. The 10 Plagues was from the Jewish God and Pharoh and his magicians could not stop them.

The pilot was an old airforce fighter in the war. He was talking about his glory days in the bar. He was happy to go out in battle, instead of the useless drunk he felt he had become. It was a good death, a glorious death, a death of honor, a death that helped save the world...and the damsel. 😉 He couldn't have died happier. That's why he has a smile on his face as he sinks into the sand.

"I don't know who he is, you can take him!" that's the one guy they should have actually looked out for lmao without the last American Imhotep wouldn't have been able to regenerate himself. Also Winston actually wanted to die in battle, he said before that he should have died with his squad before. If not Rick and the others telling him so casually that he was probably going to die by helping them would have been pretty shitty of them😅

Also, Brendan Fraser was the man of his day, great leading man, great comedic timing, good actor all round, fell out of the public eye for a while but had a great comeback recently, there was a huge outpouring of love and support for him when he returned to the big screen. The Mummy movies with Brendan Frasier are some of my favorites! After the first one you get hooked! Brendan a tually had a neat death experience while filming this one. He did almost all of his own stunts in his movies. During the hanging scene, he was actually almost hung to death! The fact that that happened, and he still continued on in filming is awesome. From the story, to the actors, to the special effects, this movie is a good time! Can't wait to see your reactions to the 2nd and 3rd ones. Now you need to watch George of the Jungle with BJ! When I was younger, they used to televise camel racing where the 'jockeys' used to wear different coloured Tabards or jackets like jockeys do. We used to watch it on the telly! Apparently camels when they walk or run their feet splay out which allows them to walk on the sand without their feet sinking into the sand. They haven't showed camel racing on the telly ( here in the UK for years I watched it in the 60s and 70s i think it was !) mind you I'm old, lol x

Yes, Camels are fast. In Kuwait they race them on tracks like we do horses. And they can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars-each! In Turkey, I saw a „camel fight“ at the ancient city of Ephesus in the amphitheater. I was in the USAF and stationed in various and wonderful locations. I think everyone should try to join the military, any branch, and serve at least 1 tour. It can really be an eye opener and expand your view of the world. And for some a great career. Cheers

A funny story re: the opening "prelude" scenes of the movie. The DVD version I own has a commentary track recorded by Oded Fehr ("Ardeth Bey," i.e. The Man In Black), Kevin J. O'Connor ("Beni," i.e. the cowardly, double-crossing, yet wise-cracking, thief), and Arnold Vosloo ("Imhotep," i.e. The Mummy). When they're talking about the scene where Imhotep and his underlings are being mummified alive, Arnold Vosloo says this about his experience filming it:
"This was scary, man. This is where they entomb me, and.... Bondage is not my thing, I know that for sure after having shot this scene, because they completely wrap me up from head to toe, and I couldn't move for about four hours.
"This scene here [~4:47 in this YT video], they had me stand up and then they wrap me up, and they put me in the coffin. And some people like being tied up, but I can assure you, it's not my thing."
    (the others chuckle)

Damn. Asia and BJ done come out with new videos, one of them being a reaction to an all-time favorite timeless classic of mine The Mummy 🏆.
Good eye BJ on the Head Library Administrator "accidentally" burning the map. You could fairly tell that he knows of the place or was there once and is aware enough of its dangers.
Sorry Asia but I laughed when Johnathan popped out of the tomb with the Mummy to prank his sister and you got scared. Nonetheless as you both know The Mummy is the perfect balance of action and comedy. Even the pudgy Arabic Slave Trader was funny. Asia, about those jars. The movie barely explains this. A plausible reason why Imhotep (ancient High Priest of the Pharaoh) knows where to find and retrieve his jars containing his organs is due to the jars spiritually being linked to him.
I look forward to seeing your reaction to The Mummy Returns as that is one of those sequels that's either just as good as its predecessor or better.

This was Oded Fehr's (Ardeth Bay) big movie debut. Not being as tall as Brendan Fraser the costumers put him in high heel boots and the tall headdress to make him appear more menacing.
