I loved how hard you beauiful ladies were laughing to the Barber Shop guys..I grew up with one in my Black Neighborhood called Leon's-The crazy conversation/banter I'd hear made it a pleasure to go get a haircut! Leon also didn't like or promote products like "Soul Glow" --"Man what you puttin' all that oil cloggin' up your hair follicles, killin your scalp like a duck on one a' them Greenpeace ads.!" Like Akeem he kept lots of African natural stuff on hand. Very fun reactions to a very fun movie!

Fun Fact: For the movie's 30th anniversary a few years ago, an independently operated McDonald's in Chicago "dressed" as McDowell's for Halloween. The owner changed the sign, the menu and the employee uniforms. It was brilliant.
Also, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair would go on to voice Simba's parents in "The Lion King" (1994).
Playing a King and Queen once again.

Eddie Murphy became known for impersonations with the use of extensive make-up. A few years before this movie, Eddie Murphy was on "Saturday Night Live" and had a sketch where he made himself up as a white man and went around town as a sort of flipped rendition of "Black Like Me."

"So why did you come here?"
    "To find something special."
"It's a long way to travel."
"No journey is too great when one finds what he seeks."
Fun Fact: Cuba Gooding Jr. (an Oscar winner) and Vondie Curtis-Hall (an Emmy and SAG Award nominee) made their first on-screen appearances in this film.
Zamunda Forever Fact: Zamunda is the name of the fictional African country the main characters are from. This name was taken from a Richard Pryor routine where he referred to a fictional African tribe of the same name.
Double Duty Fact: This was the first time Eddie Murphy played multiple characters in the same film, inspired by Peter Sellers who did the same in Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (1964). This would become a trademark of Murphy. After the make-up and clothing was applied for the Saul character, Eddie Murphy wanted to test the make-up and costume out. He got a golf cart and drove from one studio department to another in Paramount Studios. He would get out of the cart and say "Hi. I'm Eddie Murphy." in his regular voice. No one believed him.
Before The MCU Fact: The homeless men that receive the money from Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) are the Duke brothers (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) from Trading Places (1983) also directed by John Landis. In that movie, Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) was responsible for The Dukes losing their fortune. The Dukes theme from the movie can be heard in the background. Apparently, Landis didn't like the idea because it would be too self-referential, even though he is known for breaking the fourth wall in his movies. It led to a conflict with producer George Folsey Jr., until star Eddie Murphy decided that it was a great idea.

There are scattered moments of good moments in the sequel, but nothing that you will ever remember for years to come like the first movie. "Coming to America" was brilliantly written and acted by everyone, especially the multiple roles done by Eddie and Arsenio. Akeem wants the exact opposite of his sheltered, pampered upbringing. He wants a real life, and a real woman. Really solid character and motivation, even if the problem is that try as he might, he can't escape his background, and hiding it only creates a rift between him and the woman he loves. The lines "Ever since I was born, I've been trained to serve you" and "Am I not all you dreamed I would be?" from the film "Coming to America" are sampled in the 1997 song "Coma" by Australian ambient band Pendulum

In a way the premise is very close to another 80s hit, Crocodile Dundee.

@@ForceOfLightEntertainment It's also very "cute", as you described Coming To America :), though to be honest, I would say some of the humor is a bit more outdated to me than in Coming To America. It is cool to think the two main stars did actually marry and stay together for many years after filming it.

Damn. I thought I remembered you doing a reaction to Trading Places (1983). The director of this is the director of Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd. There's a big reference to Trading Places that you, like so many, missed because you watched this film first. I insist you watch Trading Places (1983), so you can get what I'm talking about. Plus it's hilarious (more so than this if I had to make a comparison).

I realized you ladies never saw Trading Places, one of Eddie Murphy's first movies. Or I should say I don't see it in your list on TH-cam. It is a modern retelling of The Prince and The Pauper. A fun movie. The money given to the old men is a call back to that movie.

yes I know this movie well, I'm quite knowledgeable about movies, Eddy Murphy is very funny.
You should have seen "trading places" first in my oopinion, as there are some connections to this movie, but just small details, nothing important.

You need to watch Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd. That movie and this movie has something in common. By saying that Trading Places should have been seen first then this one.

(Shrug) I'd buy a Sexual Chocolate CD. Also, and I didn't know this, all the different characters they play, I had no idea Eddie was also the old Jewish guy in the barbershop. Great makeup

Did you cut it off too soon the end credits showed all the characters they played one by one and did you notice the two old rich men who lost all their money at the end of the movie TRADING PLACES who Eddie gave the bag of money to?
