Just so you viewers know this is a very very detailed explanation. He’s giving you a very good lesson here. Most you tubers don’t explain that the downward shift is very very fast and people throw their right side out to go fishing as a result. This move right here plus my natural short game is what got me to +1 So re watch it multiple times.
@@Hittingitsolid pleasure is mine. Btw how do you maintain your swing when you don’t play often anymore? I recently lost my swing and I “think” it’s the backswing load to fire down with power. Just can get my club to set to pull the trigger without thinking
@@saijinkai For me, I do a lot of practice drills at home without a club in my hand. I continually try to build muscle memory in my golf swing whenever I get the chance.
Hi Troy, I just came upon this video and it is a real eye opener for me. I have been trying to improve for years, and this piece has eluded me. Looking at both old and current videos of my swing shows that the first move I am making in the downswing is my left shoulder going up, leading to dreaded early extension. Thanks so much for the simple explanation, and I will be working on this a lot over the winter!
Something that has helped me with the feel of this is: top of the swing, at that split second as my weight just begins to shift I think of keeping my back to the target just a fraction of a second longer. Doing this seems to keep me from bringing the left shoulder up too soon and I hit it really solid.
I’m commenting after discovering this for myself. I have NEVER felt comfortable over a driver because I didn’t know what was going to happen or where the ball was going. I had the idea to have my front shoulder going down and forward and I started hitting bomb draws. After a few good shots, I finally figured it out and was confident the ball was going to start doing what I intended. Can’t believe I’ve never heard this tip before. I have heard many say the left shoulder goes up, but that is BS. It will eventually but if you don’t go down first, you’re missing out on something important.
Yeah this is an underrated tip. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a solid short game bc I do this on a smaller scale, very well. I could never figure out what it was that made me so inconsistent with full swings. I didn’t keep the left shoulder down for that split second and as a result, have hurt the right side of my lower back. But I’m glad I figured it out from this video, now the coiling is released naturally when I swing correctly.
This is key, i think in terms of pulling with the lead leg at the start of the downswing. That feel of pulling lowers me into a squat like position but maintaining my angles of the upper body and shallows and sets my club in a position so i can push away from the ground when rotating into my lead hip. Arms and hands just following along controlling/stearing the club. Its a very subtle move just at the start of the downswing but crucial in so many ways.
Great video. You described my situation perfectly. My question is is this move (pulling up with the left shoulder and side and tilting back) caused by a effort to hit up on the ball? Thanks Ken
Hi Ken, with irons you want to be hitting more down on the golf ball. Driver is hitting more up. The pulling up with the left shoulder happens after the strike. There's not much tilting back as such. Does that make sense? Cheers
I think this tip will help right now through your help in compressing the ball but sometimes I hit it thin every time l do this I’ve been thinking in not extending my arms through impact I’ll try your tip tomorrow thanks
Have the hardest time with this one. So many years going flat. Practice drills looks great as soon as i put the club back in hand shoulders go back flat. Love channel I'll keep working these drills. Thanks
High Troy- Great video and really important. Getting left shoulder down as first move in down swing can be deceptive as a first move from the top. Getting left shoulder down does not mean getting left shoulder down lower than right shoulder as this is what I first thought. That was a mistake to think that on my part and this thought threw me off for the longest time.. Really both shoulders go down as a first move not just the left shoulder. The first move down is a centring or squatting motion if you will, not an isolated move of the left shoulder down as you suggest. Hope this helps unless I am mistaken.
No, he's clearly saying to feel like your belt button and shirt buttons get down aswell. That feel as you say is important so you just don't drop your lead shoulder
This is my key move. It's a move that most amateurs leave out. It's less flippy and you can really feel the shaft flexing and hear the explosive compression, followed by the "HISS", as the air is squeezed out of the dimples 😊
Hi Mike, I use them in a lot of drills. Such as putting them in my belt loops to help with improving sequencing. They are a great teaching aid also as they make it clearer to the viewer to see which way the shoulders or hips are moving. Cheers
I have found that if I lower my left should on the backswing, I have to make sure that I turn it up and away on the downswing or I heel the ball (or worse!)
When I tilt my shoulder too much with my left shoulder lower than my right at the top of the backswing, I always hit the ground first which turns the club face and the end result is that i'm hooking the ball. Any suggestions?
Hi Pat, sounds like you are either coming down too steep in the downswing and/or not rotating enough which is causing the club to bottom out too early. Think about getting the club more shallow in the downswing and get some more rotation. Cheers
Hi Peter, it's okay for the head to dip a bit in the backswing. It will then dip a bit more at the start of the downswing. If you feel it's dipping too much, ensure your trail leg is straightening a bit to encourage a better turn. Cheers
Hi Byungjoo, you will have to lift the left shoulder at some point, it's impossible not to with the right side bend. The key is to start the downswing feeling the left shoulder low first. Cheers
Hi Shane, yes that's very unusual. You could try that and play around with how much you need to move back and find a happy medium. Look at how much you are rotation also in the downswing. Cheers
@@Hittingitsolid yes I’ve never seen anyone have the problems I do. I have to hit off a tee to stay away from the ground. I’d intee the ball 4 inches high I still dig way deep in the dirt. 2 years of the same thing. Only thing I can do is try to jump up away from the ground at impact .
Has anyone ever added up how many moves an amateur golfer needs to practice and remember in a split second of a golf swing…..from evaluating your lie…the wind…the target…to lining up your target…to addressing the ball…etc…..hundreds I would think….I think it would help if a golf instructor would just teach a very simple swing for a high handicap golfer and then move up to a lower handicap golfer etc…..this instructor is one of the better teachers online compared to many others with all these so called secret moves….their are no secrets….ask Ben Hogan…he said he learned the game by digging it up from the ground….thousands of hours and balls are required to lear; this game and very few actually improve….in my book…without it…
Hi Andrew, there's no magic amount it needs to go down as it's different for all golfers. I'd say if at present, your left shoulder it raising up too quickly you'll need to feel it going down even though ... exaggerate it. The left shoulder only goes down for a split second, so it's a quick movement before rotating up and behind you. For you, it may work to feel it moving only a couple of inches, it just depends on your current swing tendencies. Hope that helps. Cheers
I really REALLY need to incorporate this lead shoulder down move into my swing but I’m one of the ones that hits it fat doing the drill, but I also end up SHANKING the ball loads more while trying to do this drill! Feels like my whole center of mass moves forward in front of the ball and toward the ball getting closer to it. I think this drill could do wonders for me if I can get it right. Any suggestions on my problems with it? Thanks!!
Hi Kevin, I'd say if you focus on getting more rotation is really key for you. Also, don't forget the swallowing aspect of the club in the downswing. The mass will move forward but should recentre as you get closer to impact. It's not unusual to hit a lot of fat shots when doing this for the first time. It will take a number of repetitions to get it right. Check your set up as well. I've got a video coming out this week that will help you with that. Cheers
What are you talk about? This is huge considering most Ams slide too much, raisie the Lft shoulder too early, stall and dump the club on the ball, no way then to rotate through the shot…. But I guess this is insignificant 😉
