I am a one-armed golfer and this is one of the magic keys for me. I was messing around with Trackman, trying to calibrate my 8 iron for more accuracy. I was not looking for distance, as I had about 78 mph on an 8 iron, which gave me more distance than many of my (two armed) buddies. And translates to more than enough to play GIR on all holes on my not very long home course. However...... as I shortened the swing to what felt barely like a half swing, my swing speed on the 8 iron went up to a mind-bending 90ish (maxed out at 94) mph. I always "suffered" from an extreme overswing and that created a disconnect between my arm and my body and the transfer of energy was just poor. With the short backswing I feel like my arm is fully connected to my body and I can just "rip / slam" it through by using my hips and torso rather than trying to catch up and getting stuck with my arm. All in perfect harmony, so of course the swing speed went up by a crazy jump.
I love this video - I've been looking for a modern day interpretation of Percy Boomer's short backswing he describes in his book and this is it - I can see straight away the flaws in my current swing - a big THANKYOU!
You're making a lot of sense Troy. I had decided about 4 years ago at age 68 to shorten it. The golf swing I mean. I'd found that ankle and knee injuries plus a bout of cellulitus in the left ankle had an effect on my balance generally and definitely when swinging a club. I've found that I've been able to create better balance and leverage swinging it shorter, with a feeling that the body parts are all nicely wound up throughout the takeaway and all the way back and through the ball. I can hit the driver almost as far as at age 35-40(when I was taking the shaft back to about parralel.) Kinda wish I'd shortened the swing way back. Might have improved distance and accuracy I think. The clubs are a bit more efficient these days of course. The other thing is distance control with short and mid irons and swinging them that way is good prep and confidence builder for pulling the driver out on the next tee. Good work Troy. Even if some folks try this and find they lose a little distance, I think the consistancy gained would far outweigh any slight distance loss.
Thanks for the video and clear explanation of this process. I also have a shorter backswing and this helped tremendously so far....Much appreciated! Rich Z.
I had a chance to hit some balls today and I felt like a golfer today. I’m probably not maximizing one or two of the tips and still was able to hit tremendous shots. The key tip for me was getting length in my lead arm. Hit about 50 balls, only a handful were not clean hits. Your explanation is simple and easy to understand. I did watch the video 4 times before trying it. I may watch it 4 times a day. Thank you!
been golfing about 7 months now - very inconsistent. I can hit hard and far but majority go off to the right, or I top the ball or miss altogether, etc. Today I went to the driving range and was having a bad day. for the heck of it, I really shortened my back swing and hit consistent balls perfectly straight. I think I found my solution. I am very tall with long arms so maybe an exaggerated back swing is not for me.
I had an on-course epiphany the other day half way through my round that coincides with this short backswing video. Over the many years my ballstriking has diminished in consistency leading to a variety of fat, thin or weak shots. So, the other day I thought to reduce the variables by shortening my backswing, and the results were instantly better. It will take a while to ingrain this new swing feeling but I do believe this is the path I need to be on into the future. 27 orthopedic surgeries and I’m still pretending to be 25-30 years old.
At my age and body type I am struggling with flexibility, so this lesson is very appropriate for me. I learned here that I don't need to worry about a full back swing so much, that I can still hit solid shots with a shorter back swing. Thanks Troy - Cheers!
Great video Troy ..I have limited flexibility so have tried a shorter more compact backswing and am getting much more consistency. Could you clarify please how the ground is used for power? ..I still don’t get how this works . Thanks
Love your videos Troy. I have trouble pulling shoulder back whilst trying to get the width. Is there a swing feeling to blend the shoulder and arm movements ? Thanks.
Hi Sandy, Thanks for that. I like to feel my right arm remaining as straight as possible. When I do this, the left arm will naturally remain straight providing me with that width. Does that make sense? Cheers
@@Hittingitsolid Really appreciate your reply Troy. Playing in our seniors competition tomorrow and will have that right arm swing thought. Please keep up the great work!

Hey John, it's much the same process obviously just a longer club. Ensure you're set up right the ball forward in your stance and you're giving yourself more room to swing. Cheers

Hello, I can take a quick look for you. Are you able to email a slow motion swing down the line and face on? Regards
Can I still start the downswing with a hip bump ? Thank you
You can, make sure it's not too excessive and leave the upper body behind causing too much secondary axis tilt that's all. Cheers
It's still a full back swing, you just don't raise the arms. That makes the swing more rotational...which is great!
Yep, definitely
Is there a way I could send you a vid of my swing?
