Beautiful Joan Baez Makes Fun Of Ex-Boyfriend Bob Dylan Singing It Ain't Me Babe With Earl Scruggs

- It was a beautiful afternoon in Portola Valley, California at the home of Joan Baez. Bluegrass County Music Legend Earl Scruggs and his two sons Randy Scruggs and Gary Scruggs were traveling the country seeking out musicians who Earl admired. Earl had a vision that banjo and mountain and country music could come together with his incredible banjo style to make something new. At this time, Earl was tired of playing tunes like what he and Lester Flat did for Beverly Hillbillies (the TV series).
He reached out to musicians like Joan Baez, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and others, for get-togethers where they could make music and see what would come from it. I made a 90 minute documentary of Earl and his family while they were making this effort. This is a link to that film: • Earl Scruggs Made This...
This scene with Joan Baez and Earl and Randy Scruggs and Gary Scruggs is just fantastic and I felt so fortunate to be there to record it. Although I was the director and the cameraman, I set up the my 16mm camera & a single Neumann microphone. We said we were ready and we started rolling.
Remember that this was a time when Joan's husband David was in prison for protesting the draft during the Vietnam War. They just birthed their sonGabriel, who is in this scene. To answer some commentators, it was not alcohol that she gave him in that glass but water.
As you can imagine, being that I am now an 82-year-old documentary filmmaker with so many films to my credit, I have recorded a lot of musicians in my day. Country. Bluegrass. Mountain music. Old Time music,. Classical. Folk. Opera. Rock 'n roll. But this moment between Earl and Joan Baez backed up by Earl's brilliant guitar picking son Randy is in a class by itself.
I would like to thank some of those who have advertised on my TH-cam video. Without this support, I couldn't keep presenting my work (I'd have to do other work to make a living). They include Nothin Fancy bluegrass. Bluegrass near me. Charm City bluegrass 2023. Appalachian bluegrass music. Live bluegrass near me. Bluegrass concert near me. Bluegrass music near me.
If you found this scene pleasurable, I would appreciate your supporting my efforts by clicking the super thanks button below the video screen. Your support gives me the resources to allow me to dig into my archive for more moments in time like this one.
Thank you

Who was that sitting next to her, playing guitar? ..a young Donald Trump?
She sings her high notes so effortlessly. Her Dylan impression was hilarious. I love Joan Baez.

Hope you enjoy my impression of Dylan singing Visions of Johanna
So funny.
@Lightning Simoneschi Basketball uhh, she was a prominent figure in the folk scene before Dylan blew up. Her status helped catapult Dylan into the spotlight, not the other way around.

I can do Joan. I can do Striesand. And Celine. My voice is pretty but I don't have the volume. If I sing louder I can't hit the notes right.
She is so so beautiful... as a woman, I feel hypnotized by her, she has an aura about her, can't help being fascinated by that beautiful smile, those dark intense eyes and of course her voice... she moves me so deeply
i have also been hypnotized by her singing since she I first heard her on the Stanford campus when she was sixteen or about 1957
I also have been mesmerized by Joan for so long
As a man, i know what you mean and more
Ur defo bi
How 'bout the fact she's doing all that while caring for a child in her lap
She is such a relaxed singer. Just learned a whole lot just watching her. Her immitation of Dylan is so effortless and perfect. Gives him credit as a singer and stylist and showing just how brilliant a mimic she is. Bravo Joan!
I miss singers of this caliber. People who actually DO sing, not fine tuned by artificial means. Just pure, perfect voices! And all while holding an infant and a huge mug of water! She’s just brilliant!
super mom at work here! looking gorgeous, taking care of her child/giving the child something to drink, throwing out a Dylan impression AND keeping perfect tune all at the same time! wow!
I don't think she had kids
She had the one, Gabriel Harris, son of David Harris, to whom she was married for a short time.
@@bxdanny well i know she dated Steve Jobs
He later complained that she was absent during much of his early development. This must have been a rare exception, giving the impression that such an unusual moment was followed up by a stable domestic setting.
Hell Yeah!!!😎
I wanna cry. What a special, private, piece of footage. I came to Joan's music far too late. Icon
Me, too, Jim G!
I'm crying right now listeing to comments...
You cry!!!
You're still alive!
You ain't dead yet. It's never too late.
This is truly one of the most beautiful videos on TH-cam. Joan's smile would melt even the coldest heart.
Imagine living with this beauty and this golden voice! I'd make her sing the shopping list.
joves
you want to send Joan Baez to shopping ?????
if you did so, you probably wouldn't see the following hour :-)
nobody... nobody...makes joan do anything
It could go wrong, and you could end up living with Bobby Dylan lol

I believe she has stired the imagination of many a man through the years.
Only saw her once in a concert in Oslo, Norway, sometime in the 80's.
But that woman sure is a delight to the eyes - and a treat to your ears.
Don't know what Dylan was thinking about....
78 years old and still here on earth. Thank you, Joan.❤🇺🇸

Yes indeed, times they are a changing.
@@Datanditto It is because humans mostly live in the present, that seeing a clip like that, shocks us. We are suddenly aware of the passage of time and the years seem like minutes. Hopefully you will one day experience this phenomenon.
@@Datanditto I have heard a lot of people say the things that irk you too. I agree, it is not necessary and age is relative. It is just nice to "time travel" thru TH-cam, sometimes to ones youth, and sometimes to many decades and centuries in the past. I understand your comment, as well as OP's.
What a cool comment!
Be here now, but rejoice in the fact that we lived in the most fertile of times for writers, music, art and the events of the times.
My God what sweet sound that guitar is making???? I can listen to this guitar playing all day long. That's Randy Scruggs .
😲😲😲😲😃😉😎😎
I came here to let people know this if someone else didn’t already.
Joan is by far the only person who knew bob enough to be able to do a spot on impression, I honestly feel like she was one of the only people who really knew Dylan
This is so adorable cause she's heard him sing it so much, she's flawless and funny 🥺❤️
I love when you stumble on something absolutely amazing, out of the blue like this.
Lucky baby growing up listening the beautiful singing of this cute mamma.
Everything about this piece of film is wonderful.
The last 15 seconds you should absolutely watch, with that surprise accompaniment.... But all of this, just tear-jerkingly amazing. Today's stars would never allow such gloriously personal content. This must be preserved. So so special.
I love how she so easily sings all of his songs.
Best Dylan impression I've ever heard. She's got a very acute ear.
She's got a very cute face too
Yeah, but she's not trying to do a caricature - it's very affectionate
Many of the sixties musical titans were friends & could safely tease one another re: their various mannerisms without everything being blown into tabloid & social media excesses.
She looks incredibly beautiful here.
Kind of makes my heart ache for those far gone days that seem like only yesterday.
We were so much older then.
I’m with you brother
Stunning in every way....So humble to see Joan and baby ......Speechless....Class like we will never see often in our lives the voice of an angel holding her angel
She makes it look so easy, she totally dominates those vocals.
im born in 1972 and My Mother always and I mean always played Joan baez music thank you for showing me this extra talent of her
With out a doubt, Joan has one of the best voices ever. I have loved her ever since i heard as a young kid over 45 yrs ago and she still can make me smile and cry, often during the same song.. Thank you so much for this, love it.
What a voice. And damn, Scruggs was already impressive at 16!
Absolutely beautiful and hearing the child singing towards the end, priceless.
I cannot express HOW much I love this! I was a few years shy of being born, but have always been a Joan B fan...simply beautful, amazingly talented woman.
I also remember, at19, being on a camping holiday with friends in France when her marriage to David was announced. My friends who knew how much I loved her woke me to tell me. I said “she can’t marry him she hasn’t met me yet” I got the mickey taken for years over that
Wow, baby matched her last tone perfectly! And she smiles, realizing that babies gonna be able to sing well
i'd give anything to hear my mom sing again. thanks for posting

I am so grateful my mother played her albums while i was growing up. I had the chance to see her play in 1997 and it was beautiful. Such a cool lady.
Is there anyone more beautiful than Joan Baez? Good lord.
She's not bad today either.
hell nope she's an angel
NOOOOO....*!
No one! No way!

This warms my heart and makes me emotional and makes me wanna feel that somehow I was present in there and anything related to Dylan and Joanie I'm always there, although I'm far away in India, but somehow I can still relate. That's the power of Dylan's songs, always makes me wanna cry out loud and sends shivers down my spine and speaks to my soul.
I love this comment. I was born in 1949 and I was there. Your response was my response.
They have across the borders my friend... Across everything... Through music... They made love .. they preached equality..... They created magic.....
Dylans gospel albums in the seventies were some of his most powerful songs. They were on fire. Many don't know that Bob Dylan got born again in the 70's and began writing and singing Christian songs and even preaching in between his songs on stage. Some of his fans yelled we don't want Jesus we want Bob Dylan, while others cheered him on and begged for more yelling preach, preach, gimme Jesus! It was an incredible time and some of his very best albums in my humble opinion. I really wish he were still making gospel music today but now he just seems depressed and disconnected from God. It's unfortunate because his music during then had an anointing on them unlike any of his other albums.
The baby is Joan's son Gabriel, her only child. Saw him in her band live in Portland in Dec 2006 at age 37 to introduce my 8 yr old daughter to her music as she started 5 yrs of classical guitar lessons. Joan is a fantastic acoustic guitarist, in addition to her angelic voice
She was pregnant with him during Woodstock I believe?

Such a beautiful voice. A multi talented lady indeed! Loved the Dylan impression.😃
She’s so, so, gifted and beautiful.
She sat there with her baby on her lap and imitated Dylan accurately, and never missed a beat of these lovely old songs. Beautiful.
Imagine growing up listening to your Mama singing like that ❤️
Truly a Beautiful woman, with an Angelic voice and a pure soul, such a rare combination.
It almost draws me to tears at the mere sight of this angel
This guitarist Randy Scruggs has died 2 months ago at age of 64, Randy Lynn Scruggs was a music producer, songwriter and guitarist. He had his first recording at the age of 13. He won four Grammy Awards and was twice named Musician of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards
A legend of the game. So young here but still so wise with his impromptu musical choices and technique.
On one of his little breaks you can see that he wants to take off but then Joan comes back in and he quickly falls back into line. Oh to be young again.
I cannot find words for the sweetness and the humour of this scene!
I had almost forgotten a time when I was young and such beautiful voices carried me.
What? Can't stand rappers who make fortunes in the music business without making music?
Wow! She sounds just like Bob Dylan! She had a beautiful voice. Look at how young Randy Scruggs looks. A precious piece of footage!
I’m awed that she can sing flawlessly while preoccupied with that baby
It was so wonderful see her in Camden NJ back in the 60's when she had Dylan with her on the tour.
I was in Camden, New Jersey. I was a student @ Ft. Monmouth Signal School and hitched rides to get there. I was in love with a girl there (1970), I met her @ Asbury Park on the beach. I drew an image of a horse for her in her parent's home where I stayed over night. Shortly there after I was deployed to Asmara Ethiopia, to spy on Russia for the CIA. Hello Linda Needham.

Her voice is as clear as a bell.
My one regret as I get older is never going to see her in concert! I do have all her records and a dvd but would have loved to hear her sing in person! She and Dylan and Leonard Cohen my favorites! Did see
Leonard in concert in 1969 at Forest Hills! Beautiful and very inspirational, he was so great! He is missed!
The difference between her parody and Dylan is that even mocking she is on key. What a voice.
Dylan not on key? Whatever you say
I'm with Sam and Zach. Dylan sings on key.
I know what you mean. Even when she's imitating him she's perfect.

David - You're most graciously welcome. Thank you for capturing such magic for future generations.
The most wonderful singing voice I ever heard. Thank you for the music Joan.
VERY groovy...
Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters
Imagine, your mother was singing so beautiful, while you were sitting on her lap and she is meanwhile comforting you. She is unbelievable, even when she looks angry, because the guitar is pitchy.
I’ve watched this every day since I found the video this week. Joan’s voice is like silk and then she breaks into a spot on Bob impression. Is there anything this woman cannot do? I’m in love!
Great hone video clip. Kid on her lap Big glass in her hand not even really poised to belt out a song yet she opens her mouth and this beautiful voice / tone comes ringing out so effortlessly.
That kids probably 48 years old now? What a beautiful lady. Great Dylan impression too. Loved it all.
He died! This month.
Heart attack. So wonderful. Indeed, what a time it was. Thank you for this clip.
What a treat! I was an awkward teenager with a sad streak. First time I heard Joan's voice was as a teen in Calcutta, India, one torpid afternoon in someone's house, hanging with friends. That desultory afternoon the sun blazed its tropical heat outside till everything wilted, but Joan's clear voice cut through the afternoon like an autumn bell. I had never heard anything so beautiful and which instantly drew me in. I was a devoted fan. I heard one concert of hers in Tucson, AZ years later when I had my own babies. And I sat in the back, watched this woman I admired so greatly, and wept my heart out over every song. Now I live in Nor Cal too, probably 6 miles from her house but don't know where it is. I would have liked to have met her and told her how much those songs validated me. Her voice was like mine. Her courage in standing up for what is right, her beautiful life, her gentleness. A class act. I hope she realizes how much she is loved.
Go tell her! I bet she would like that. Tell her for us all.
That is so cool and funny. She's got Dylan's style done perfectly. She's got a great voice; one of a kind.
I Love Joan Baez, she's Super !!!
I attended NYU that is in the heart of the Village, for 6 years I was waiting to see her but my luck in 6 years was bad. However, the only time I saw her, my luck went to the universe, she signed my book of economics that I still maintain. Fanatic of her to the extreme. Very cute voice and beautiful woman. And she still has those traits of social humility. I hope to be in the USA for her farewell concerts and I bring the book.
The child sings the very last syllable with perfect intonation!
Oh the baby time people without kids will never know how deep those moments stay with you.
It's hard to believe such a beautiful and talented woman was so down to earth. Most stars with her looks and voice are wrapped up in themselves.
Tim Murphy almost ALL of the stars of tbe 60's were all very Grounded and Humble..even shy some of them like Hendrix for example...yeah they were very special people back then...the age of world wide media coverage changed all that now mostly...
Was? Still is, man. I saw her during her finale tour. Still so humble and beautiful!
Joan Baez was not just a wonderful singer/songwriter. She's is a beautiful human being and a spiritual guru to me.
A caring, kind, empathetic, compassionately person who promotes non violence and peace.
She is a political activist who marched with Dr Martin Luther king, demonstrated against the Vietnam war, was jailed for supporting civil rights, spent time in Hanoi during bombing raids and spent her life standing against victims of injustice throughout the world.
Music nowadays is a branch of the entertainment industry, in the 60s,we believed it could change the world
I was at live aid and Joan came out on stage and said children of the 80s this is your WOODSTOCK
Oh! What a Gem! l loved this time in history. Youth, and talent is a wonderful thing indeed! Thank you for this lovely clip! Her impression was perfect!
i'm 67 years old. I've loved Joan since before I was in High School. but this is the best video ever. It would have influenced me long ago. I would have seen the world in a different way. Love you Joan. Thank you, I hope you have a nice day. (haven't heard these lyrics? screw you.)

This vedio is Beautiful. Love Joan Baez and Bob Dylan always a big fan. Back in the sixties and seventies they were so laid-back with life

Seems so laid back but we had Vietnam, protests in the street, people getting shot by the national guard on college campuses, riots all over the country, folks stabbed to death at concerts...
Not quite laid back..🤔
