I had the same question. I set this up for my mom. It's worked fine without being connected to a smartphone (except I did need to put the app on my phone to get the date and time setup). Now, a week later, it seems to have stopped tracking.
My fitpolo h709 can't connect to any phone or app either. Fitpolo qr code redirects me to a website shop not app. Says page not found.Is this phased out already? Or just factory defect? Is there any way/idea to fix it?
I've actually been in the market for a watch. This really helps as I don't want to spend a lot of money on one.
Yeah, if you just want something that works, I'd grab one of these, they are inexpensive and can get the job done.

You can set it up as just a watch..and have steps counted, and other things.
