      That’s a pretty good way to do it, you can use bobber stops to give you an idea of what to go by. Set 4 of them 20 feet apart in different colors or even 2 set 20 feet apart can be a huge help.

    Hi Mike, I like your mojo set up and pretty sure it will work here on my lake in Arkansas. I have a few questions though..... I'm real old school, like way older than you guys.... Threw a net for many years and have caught my fair share of wall hangers on live shad...... in recent years (due to my right arm being about an inch longer than my left from all those net cast) LOL.... I turned pretty much to trolling plastic swim bait type lures, free lining, carolina rigged, planner boards, down riggers or whatever it takes to keep my bait in front of the fish.... I have been rigging them the last few years on Alabama rigs with pretty good success.... A lot of numbers just not a lot of big fish..... Those good heavy duty Bama rigs are pretty pricey plus the cluster #!$@ you have going on in your dip net trying to get the fish out with all those hooks..... So I'm back to pulling single baits and thought I might try your mojo parachute set up..... First question I have... is crimping your 2 leader lines to the 3 way swivel really necessary? couldn't you use snap swivels coming from your lures to the 3 way swivel? As far as that goes is the 3 way swivel even necessary??? Could one not try using just a heavy duty snap swivel from your mainline and then just 2 way barrel swivels from your 2 leader lines??? I totally get running a lot heavier lure on your long leader..... Maybe the 3 way keeps them from tangling so much.... I don't know guess I'll find out..... Anyway you guys rock and keep up the good work.... I agree with just about everything you say ....... The only thing I don't like is when you guys are netting one of those hogs back there by the prop, for the love of god please kick that stern away from the fish...... You make my rear end draw up every time you that..... LOL....
    Kevin B...

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Breckenridge Ha!! Some great info there. Sure, you can absolutely do any of those things. The 3 way swivel really only comes into play when a Shad body gets fouled and the bait starts to spin, usually after bumping the bottom. When using lighter rigs in freshwater I use 2 barrels swivel instead of the 3 way. 1 barrel from main line to the Mojo and the other to the trailer but it’s not tied to the main line, but allowed to slide over the other swivel. This keeps the line from breaking on a double. The fish on the trailer can slide up and down the line without breaking off or straightening the hook. As far as bumping the motor forward, I always do that when we are using the trolling motor because I have the remote around my neck, but when I’m on the gas motor I’m running the camera and away from the helm so I can’t bump the motor. Good catch on that. 😁😁. Thanks for the comment brother.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question and I’m getting ready to do a video on that. It’s for many reasons. It’s good for the viewers so they can hear when the fish takes line. It’s mainly a tool for the captain. I can listen to the fight and hear what’s happening from anywhere in the boat. This is good for many reasons, but just a few; if line is paying out fast near structure I know I need to make an adjustment. If it’s paying out fast while trolling I will know to slow the boat down, etc. there are lots more that will be in the video. Thanks for the comment.

  • @Jamboliner

    Awesome video Mike. How deep would you reckon the rig sits in the water column?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s something you’ll have to play with. Many factors contribute like boat speed, current, rig weight, etc. That’s why I used line counters. I’ll keep letting out line until I bump bottom then note what the counter says. I usually want it around 20-25ft down.

    • @Jamboliner
      @Jamboliner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do you need the line counter when you drop to bottom?
    Also if your fishing 60 ft water and see fish at 40, what do you do to bring up>

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use it to stay on top of everything. Because we usually only pull 2 rods (sometimes 3) we want to manage them perfectly. If we drop them in 20 ft and then troll over 40ft that doesn’t help us much. We constantly change the speed and distance out until we nail it down. You definitely don’t NEED the line counters, especially when fishing is lights out. On a day where most guys zeroed they can make a big difference though. 👍. Good question.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used downriggers a lot as a kid and got totally away from them for Stripers. I leave deep inactive fish alone and target staging fish moving shallow to feed. The Mojo rig uses one heavy chute jig ( the mojo) to get the rig deep and the lighter chute jig catches most of the fish. I rarely set baits deeper than 30 feet.

    Mike, any specific spots/coordinates at the Chesapeake Bay for trolling striped bass around this time of the year?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Migration isn’t there yet, only the residential fish. We usually start around Thanksgiving. I have been fishing the outer banks every fall/winter until 2005 when I switched to the bay and outside of a few years early on I haven’t caught fish in the same spot in consecutive years. It’s all about water temp up north and the push south along with water temps moving down the bay. It’s all about finding that happy water where bait and fish mesh. Locating that is 100% of the fight. If you’re going to fish now I would fish the CBBT that’s the first place they show up. I have a video called HOW TO FIND STRIPERS IN SALTWATER. it covers this exact thing in the bay. 👍👍

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

      Side scan works great up to 15-18 mph if it’s not too deep. Water deeper than 50 ft slows things way down, but 15 mph is a good speed to start with. You can see structure going faster, but you won’t see fish as well

It uses sonar charts that myself and others have recorded recently so it’s deadly accurate. I use a Navionics Platinum plus card. Unfortunately Sonar Charts Live doesn’t work with Go Series in the sense that you can’t record over your chart live. The card itself will work. I really like it, but there have been an explosion of new chart cards recently. CMor looks great, but is very expensive. The new Cmap cards look great too- Color contours. If we go thru marks that won’t bite I slow down as we pass the next few. Drop it in neutral and let them fall. If that doesn’t work we speed up and jig them by hand. We Rarely go over 5 mph. Mike Barbee GREAT QUESTION!!! They WILL pop open sometimes if you use FIXED jig hooks. I only use swinging hooks. Huge difference. Rarely lose fish too. Thanks for the comment brother.

    What rods are you using in the video?

      Striper 22 The new Striper Stealth Rods I helped design. The Heavy Powers are perfect for up to 40 total ounces. (We used 34 oz in this video) The ExtraHeavies are great from 40 ounces up.

    What speed you trolling.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anywhere from 2.8 - 4.5. Depending on depth and currents. We go a little faster WITH the tide. Faster in turns, and a bit faster in shallow water. But never over 5mph.

      Shakespeare LCM-1. I have had these for at least 10 years, maybe 15. They still work great.

    Forgive this old southern boy. I have never striper fished before so I am new to the scene and trying to learn. I live near the Cali Delta in Northern california.
