This movie is great. A fantastic car chase, action, and the opera scene is one of the best in the Craig series. Definitely a great follow-up to Casino Royale. Very unfairly judged.
I'm curious to know what Ben the Editor thinks about the editing in this movie. It drives me up a wall. The average shot length of all the action scenes is probably half-a-second.

Amazing work by Ben all around as always, but the Charles Spencer Chaplin bit in particular was *chef's kiss*. That picture had me confused as to who James was talking about, and when he finally let it out of the bag I perfectly mirrored Maso's reaction. 10/10 editor, and I really appreciate his video essays too. The 2 Bi 2 Furious one is a masterpiece. Cheers Ben if you're reading this.
I really loved the realism of this. rather than laser beams and spaceships, this film captured the banality of actual power players. The villain of this film was not a deranged billionaire intent on seeing the world burn, but instead a calculated cabal of secondary world leaders. These people had enough power to be untouchable, but not so much that they were recognizable.
Realism. Oh like how James Bond somehow drove all the way to the other end of Lake Garda in an hour, changed suits and removed his inner vest and Mr.White as well all with Quantum goons hot on their ass firing like mad despite one of their bosses being in the trunk. Somehow it’s realism that Mathis could be taken by corrupt police officers at a party and be beaten up and stuffed into Bond’s trunk within minutes without alerting anyone. Somehow it’s realism that Bond could fly that rickety ass airplane and somehow outmaneuver a high speed fighter plane and then miraculously find the very sinkhole he and Camille were looking for among dozens and come out unscathed despite only opening their parachute a few feet above the ground after falling hundreds of feet. Yeah, very realistic. They forgot to make this movie even remotely fun and stylish. They made it dirty and unpleasant and unnecessarily try hard to seem realistic by making it so humorless and self serious despite how unrealistic and stupid it was. Worst official Bond movie. Even other bottom dwellers had more to recommend.
I always thought it would of been cool not to shown the elevator fight. They all go in with Bond and next shot is elevator doors open and Bond walks out doing his shirt cuffs up walking out seeing all unconscious bodies between him.
The scene between Bond and M in the hotel room is one of the best scenes in any Daniel Craig Bond film. What really let’s down this movies is the editing. Every action scene is chopped up and so hard to understand.
Bond and M have such an interesting relationship. Respect, annoyance, a bit of loathing, but deep loyalty and even love (he totally views her as a mother figure which is why he gets so upset when she gets him shot in Skyfall).
omg you made me realize why craig is my fave bond; he has that 'crawled from the sewer' aura to him like if i threw raw fish at him he'd catch it with his teeth and swallow it whole

"Now that some of my rage has subsided over, you know, the changing of the suit, I can see it with more objective eyes, and I think that that initial car chase scene is really good"... Maso is a more forgiving man than me. FIVE buttons?! I simply have to skip ahead lest I lose it...
I've always been a fan of this movie's theme song. Always thought the guitar kicked ass. That being said, the opening car chase is an editing nightmare
Thank you! I was waiting for them to mention the atrocious editing in this movie, but they never did. The opening chase especially is so disorienting. If this movie was properly edited, it would probably be 10 minutes longer, without adding any new shots. Also agreed on the theme song, I think it's one of the catchiest ones.
Every action scene in this movie is an editing nightmare. It's a shame, because the action itself is really good, but the way it's shot and cut it's so hard to follow.

My favorite part of this movie is that the major set pieces are themed after the four elements - a chase over TERRA cotta tiles, the boat chase on WATER, the AIRplane scene and then, of course, the FIREy hotel sequence. It was a fun addition to a movie where the villain is an environmentalist and very subtly named “Green”.

@Jon Valler That's something of a gross oversimplification, if it was true that people go to see sequels simply because the first film was good we'd never get any of those famous flops that killed off series. You can dislike the fast and furious films but they wouldn't keep getting people back in to watch them if they weren't doing something right. To say otherwise makes you sound elitist, yes Shawshank didn't make as much money, but there are more factors beyond simply Shawshank being "too good to be popular" or whatever, we've got to take into account the difference in cinema going audience in 90s vs 00s/10s, the expanded home cinema market, F&F got a lower rating and is a more family friendly topic (slightly) so pulls in families (more families will watch the fast car film than the brutal prison story) which also impacts sales, marketing campaigns, and so on and so on. Indeed ticket sales are one of the best general determiners of a film, word of mouth still counts for something, more back then, you'll never find Sharknado, Birdemic, The Room or such making a billion dollars at the box office. It was probably a forgone conclusion QoS would make a couple hundred million quid yes, first day tickets, die hard fans, the see anything a week audience all play their part. But I think rather than it being a slap in the face to Hollywood writers that QoS made money, it's more proof it isn't as bad as people like to say. Not perfect, not without stupid moments and odd choices but I don't believe people would have got it to almost Casino Royale heights if everyone disliked it, and by your own logic of "people watch 2nd film because 1st film good" (which will be largely true, just not entirely) surely you must think QoS is good because otherwise why did Skyfall get almost double the box office?

@Jon Valler And you claim I'm mad? Did everyone clap as well? Anyone can make up a little story like that, it proves nothing apart from how upset you are that I disagreed with your simplistic comment.
I really liked Quantum. I've seen it many times over the years, and agree with some comments I've seen here: you really miss out on the value of the movie if you don't immediately watch it following Casino Royale (and to some extent, I think all of the Craig films are pretty well made to marathon). Quantum to me was just sort of an art student's take on a Bond film, and I really thought some of the scenes were just unbelievably well shot. Particularly, I loved the scene where the audio cuts out & there's just music playing as Bond is beating the ever living shit out of people--it's just a really pleasant film to watch if you don't think too hard.
Shirley Bassey's song No Good About Goodbye, which she's denied as being a Bond theme despite featuring some of the same score, would have been a perfect theme song for this film.
Is _NOBODY_ going to mention how James bond at the end of casino Royale is holding a Heckler & Koch UMP-9 with a supressor and folding buttstock but at the beginning of quantum of solace he has a H&K UMP-40 with straight magazines and a retractable buttstock?? Why is nobody talking about this?!?
@GiRayne Oh It's not a patch on Casino Royale for me. I grew up reading the bond books in the late 80s. Craig is the closest the film's have ever got to the Bond from the books. He is not a good person. But he only pretends to have all of the 'good' burnt out of him, that's why he drinks. These two films portray Bond _perfectly._
Probably my second favorite of the Craig Bond films. That opening where M's bodyguard just shoots up the place was great I thought, I was completely blind sighted by it. I do also appreciate the rationale that oil has replaced gold as the most valuable substance. There was definitely thought behind the film, and it would've been fascinating to see how this would've turned out without the Writer's Strike happening at the same time. But again, even with the troubles the film went through during production, it's far more enjoyable to me than Casino Royale was. And I like to imagine that Jeffrey Wright in his scenes isn't actually acting with how fed up he is with everything, that's just how he felt with the filming of it and all the rewrites reducing his role in the film.
@@wobblecrash XD I'll refer you to my comment in the previous video, but in short, I think Casino Royale is a dull slog that goes on for way too long. It has its moments certainly, but they're too few and far between.
Quantum of Solace is the closest the franchise gets to explicit anti-imperialism. Camille is getting revenge for some Operation Condor stuff, the Frog Man is just some featureless resource speculator.
On rewatching it, I feel like it's Bond at his most heroic and morally 'good', opposing the CIA backing Greene and MI6 too when he thinks they've also sided with him and actually caring a little about ending the water scheme.
M doesn't get shot in that scene, but the fact that it's so hard to tell exemplifies what many people hate about this movie. Glad you guys get something out of it though.
Quantum of Solace is actually my favorite. Honestly, I’m not trying to be contrarian. It’s short and brutal. If you had checked with me first, you wouldn’t look so foolish now.
Have I watched any bond films? No Am I even slightly interested in them? No Will I keep watching every video these guys make about the series? Obviously yeah
“Not anybody’s favorite” Wrong. It’s mine. Got ‘em. Genuinely though, it is. Casino is of course the better movie, and I’m not arguing it isn’t. However, I always watch these two back to back and in my opinion they work together extremely well as if they were almost one movie. Casino is the slower-paced setup, and then Quantum is the crazy fast-paced balls to the walls action half, and I really, really enjoy it.
I enjoy Quantum a lot - I love the opening car chase - but I do think Casino Royale is much better and has more inventive action overall (PARKOUR) lol. My real favorite is Skyfall though. That movie blew me away, Javier Bardems performance was perfect and the emotional payoff was stronger - almost like a great combination of Casino and Quantum.
@GiRayne from a purely filmmaking perspective it's not poorly made at all. As for the misogyny, as a woman, it didn't bother me that M died. Judi Dench was leaving the role sooner than later. And having a woman replace her would've been pandering. Her character was amazing and she got a proper send-off. While Moneypenny was disappointing but I don't chalk these things up as the entire film being misogynistic. And it's certainly not a reason why I didn't like it. It brought a lot of depth to her character.. They did lean more classic bond with his "womanizing" but ya know, he's that way in every movie. Quantum literally introduces a female counterpart just to kill her off in a terrible manner as a throwback. With Bond, it's easy to pick and choose when it's misogyny and when it's not, when the truth is, most of it is. His first love in Casino Royale betrays him for her own and dies at the end. Quite frankly it was refreshing in Skyfall to see him care so much for a woman he has no sexual relationship and still nearly die for
I’m glad you acknowledge that the character’s name is Strawberry Fields. Something the movie absolutely did not do until you see the credits. Which was a decision worse than the editing. She’s “Ms. Fields” the whole time. At no point does James acknowledge that the redhead’s name is Strawberry Fields. Not even a quick one-liner. “I’m Strawberry Fields” *eyes her up* “I bet”
I went and studied that shot of M and it looks like they CGI'd a spark on the medical pole in post-production to create the explanation that the bullet hit that instead of her
Oh shiit youre right, and a little clink sound to support that. The spark shouldve been bigger tho, you can hardly see it even when watching it frame by frame
*12:53** He obviously used the Face Back app that Will Ferrell made in the motion picture The Other Guys starring Marky Mark Wahlburger and the aforementioned Will Ferrell. A technology that actually exists. When I was checking to make sure the app was called face back, I saw an article from 6 years ago saying how Facebook can do that.*
Great acting moment from Craig in this film at the end of the hotel fight with the assassin, he looks away from the guys face as he's strangling him to death. Gives a slight humanising touch to the otherwise brutal psycho that is his Bond
You're talking about the suit, and here I was neither knowing nor caring that it was supposed to be right after Caniso Rolaye. The more you know, you know?
Re: gaming frustration - I once managed to accidentally pull the A key off my keyboard (I assume by getting my fingernail hooked under it) while banging my hands on the keyboard after dying at the same intersection for the 9001st time in Half-Life 1.
my headcanon is M did get shot but simply ignored it, and for the rest of the daniel craig era M has had a bullet sized hole through her body, it was just never shown or paid attention to.
I sure hope you guys discuss how absolutely insane, brain-dead, outrageous, and downright impossible the villain's grand master scheme to get caught and escape is in Skyfall, because it's honestly the dumbest thing I have ever seen in a movie, legitimately.
Oh dear. You expected realism in a Bond Film? I mean, compared to every other Villain in the franchise, Silva's scheme is about par for the course TBH. This is a franchise that dead set has Baron Samedi as a villain. I feel that " insane, brain-dead, outrageous, and downright impossible" is pretty much the mission statement for all JB films.
For me it's less about the implausibility of Silva knowing everything he had to know in advance for his plan to work and more about the fact that there is absolutely no need for him to have come up with such a plan. He blew up M's computer with a fucking virus, did he really need to do anything other than that to kill her?
@@ericlayton8888 I'm not going to argue the logistics of it because it's all pretty farfetched. But they clearly establish his plan was to publicly humiliate her before killing her. He blows up MI6 near the start of the film without her inside so she could see it - it's about her world falling apart around her. What better way to do that than escape just after she thinks she's caught him and then blow her away at the enquiry into her own incompetence?
@@RogueBoyScout, Bond at least had _competent_ writing, even in some of its worst moments as a series. But the escape plan is absolutely, positively, *insultingly* terrible writing. Nothing in Die Another Day is worse. You cannot write that scene any more atrocious and hilariously ridiculous than it is. It's needlessly convoluted, impractical, embellished, and it only occurs because the same "I wanted to escape!" nonsense happened in the Dark Knight and Avengers.
10:30 Thing about this is: Bond didn't trust anyone at that point because he was so bent on rage and hatred. Of course, M didn't really listen to Bond and just cleared Mathis and MI6 compensated him. When he's in the trunk, he's heavily beaten up and Bond uses him as a human shield ... but not on purpose. He didn't expect them to shoot and you can see that (or at least I did). Then he dumps him in the garbage because, at least that's how I understood it, he tried to buy himself some time? I don't remember who said it but supposedly this bought him some time because authorities would have to investigate longer what happened there. Otherwise, great review. I think this movie was okay, even good at some points. Could have been a lot better BUT the best part of it out of ANY Bond movie is Bond himself. I love how badass and bruised he looks and how well his clothing looks in this one. Especially in the artworks / prerelease material of the movie. Plus, his arc (with Camille) is pretty cool and the action, while yes, it was messy, definitely made you feel in danger and often felt pretty brutal. And the music ... oh my god, the music. Only the Bond theme was missing but even that was there at times. A proper gunbarrel at the start would have been nicer too (there's a lot of fan edits out there with Craig in Brosnan's gunbarrel: could have fit well in this but ah well). The villain was all right. As you said, he wasn't an iconic or menacing one, just a very real one, especially at the time, so that's positive too, I think. He does feel pretty insane though with his weird eye movements and the way he screams in the end fight, so at least there's that.
and here I thought I was the only one who noticed the different suit in the beginning 🤣… I like the three-piece from the end of Casino Royale MUCH better
"For FOUR individualists: 12 fresh eggs Salt and pepper 5-6 oz. of fresh butter Break the eggs into a bowl. Beat thoroughly with a fork and season well. In a small copper (or heavy-bottomed saucepan) melt four oz. of the butter. When melted, pour in the eggs and cook over a very low heat, whisking continuously with a small egg whisk. While the eggs are slightly more moist than you would wish for eating, remove pan from heat, add rest of butter and continue whisking for half a minute, adding the while finely chopped chives or fine herbs. Serve on hot buttered toast in individual copper dishes (for appearance only) with pink champagne (Taittainger) and low music." ― Recipe for Scrambled Eggs 'James Bond'
Thank you for saying this wasn't even the worst Daniel Craig movie. I know a lot of fans hated this, but it was a great followup to Casino Royale. The films that followed Quantum have been unwatchable.
I will defend the fight scene with Greene at the end - as someone who likes this film a bit better than most do! I once heard a quote - do not recall where, but it applies. It's something like 'The best swordsman in the world does not fear the second best swordsman in the world. He fears a novice - for a novice is unpredictable and unruly'. Something like that. Enjoying these reviews! Looking forward to the Spectre one - there's so much... Weird stuff in that film.
I know James gets tired of playing through video games to footage and level select and all that but if he wanted to maybe give 007 blood stone a crack for spectre since I don't think that game had any video game adaptations and it ends on a cliffhanger implying blowfeld was behind it all.
This film may be the weakest of Craig’s films but I think the opening car chase, the chase through the city and then the opera scene are the best scenes in the film.
All the Bond villains do usually have some distinct visual trait, and Green's is super easy to miss: he has black eyes. It's referenced again in the opera that they go to, which is called Tosca, about a woman with black eyes (the audiovisual element of the performance has eyes as a major theme).
*12:47** idk there is logic in that train of thought. Just like how in poker the hardest type of player to play against is a beginner, since their moves make no sense you can’t get a read on them. It’s harder to play defensively against them. Same thing with fighting. If you’re going up against somebody that is trained you have a general idea of what they are going to try and do. But if it’s somebody that was not trained to fight they have no style, no fighting rhythm no rhyme or reason for what they are doing so you have 0 idea what’s coming next. That’s why in MMA when someone is fighting an opponent with a fighting style that doesn’t mesh with theirs, it is usually one sided and over quick. You’re trained on how to block a punch with the correct form, not wild as hell haymakers.*
My personal favourite part of QoS was the INCREDIBLY BAD pick-up line James used on Strawberry Fields "I can't find the stationary," because to this day my wife and I use it to proposition each other! 😆😆
That game actually looks incredible from a graphics perspective for a PS2. Seriously looks like it could be a PS3/360 game. They do an amazing job at hiding the polygon edges and the textures look great.
That opening car chase was something special. I’ve seen all these films in theaters opening day. Makes me sad that I can’t continue the tradition with No Time to Die. Cuz, ya know, covid in America.
12:48 It's actually a real thing. A person who doesn't know how to fight is dangerous to someone who does because they don't know the rules as it were, meaning they'll do something so stupid that it's not expected and might actually work.
Seems like a really treacherous gambit, though. Like, surely for every moment you're unpredictable and dangerous, there's several more where you flail right into a clenched fist
@@AnnDVine I mean yeah you're probably not gonna win the fight, but it can be dangerous for a trained fighter cause they're expecting certain things and you aren't doing them and it can throw them off. they'll adapt though and then you're fucked.
Are we just going to ignore Joaquín Cosio (General Medrano) in Quantum is wearing the same military outfit he wore in The Suicide Squad as General Suarez? 😂
The thing I remember most about this movie was the theme song by Alicia Keys and Jack White, really incredible Bond song. The Chris Cornell one from Casino Royale is great too. The Skyfall theme by Adele might be the greatest Bond song as well.
The Skyfall theme is great, it's just let down by the bad rhyme. "Skyfall" and "crumble"? Adele sings it as "crumball" just to make it fit, irks me something awful.
I didn't like the way A. Keys & White's voice sound together. The harmony was off. Not sure if that that was on purpose. But it didn't work for me. Skyfall though is awesome. A pure Bond theme.

Just say you were inspired by Oldboy or something. No one would've really cared. Could have been a way better scene.

"Now that some of my rage has subsided over, you know, the changing of the suit, I can see it with more objective eyes, and I think that that initial car chase scene is really good"... Maso is a more forgiving man than me. FIVE buttons?! I simply have to skip ahead lest I lose it...
“It starts with Bond climbing out of the sewer, which is where I like to think he came from originally”
Well, he *did* go to Eton, so…
I've always been a fan of this movie's theme song.
@@CameronM1138 Fully agreed. I wish someone would re-edit that whole movie.
Thank you for saying that about the theme song. It's super catchy and fun.
The music by itself is fantastic but the vocals are deeply unpleasant.
A Bond game worth checking out that's set in the Craig Era is Blood Stone. It's set in between Quantum & Skyfall. Not sure if it's Canon tho
Great game
Would 've been cool if it was set in between casino and quantum. Just one mission were Bond has to run to his car (and change his suit)
Fantastic game, has perfect bond setpieces
When he shouts, "Navigate!" and she shouts, "LEFT!" That's one of the most telling lines of dialogue that there was a writers strike.

Can’t believe they didn’t bring up how bad the action scenes were edited
I think the biggest take away from this is that we must call for James and Mason to do the greatest trilogy of all time: Johnny English.
I remember liking the first and the third one. I thought the second one was meh.
My favorite part of this movie is that the major set pieces are themed after the four elements - a chase over TERRA cotta tiles, the boat chase on WATER, the AIRplane scene and then, of course, the FIREy hotel sequence. It was a fun addition to a movie where the villain is an environmentalist and very subtly named “Green”.

well, now I want a Johnny English trilogy video
The fact that this movie didn't totally flop is a real slap in the face to the Writer's Guild.
Please explain in detail what u mean?
@@dominiqueodom3099 there was a massive writers strike by the Writers Guild at the time this film was made, hence it had none of the writers these films usually had, yet made just 3 mill less than the previous movie basically with the director just making it up as he went along
@Jon Valler I'm perfectly calm thanks, you haven't demonstrated anything but your own petulant idiocy. Anyone can see my response is more nuanced, and that yours is simplistic and wrong.
I’m surprised that they didn’t talk about MI6 adopting Star Trek’s LCARS system for this film, and then dropped them, never to mentioned again.
Maybe because it’s been only 4 hours after the video was released you posted this and no one really cares and it’s not that serious
@@CommanderShepard-wq3wo 5 buttons on his suit instead of 4, i mean come on do they take us for fools?

Years later, after a few rewatches, I've come to really appreciate QoS.
One of my favourites.
@GiRayne
Oh It's not a patch on Casino Royale for me.
I grew up reading the bond books in the late 80s.
Craig is the closest the film's have ever got to the Bond from the books.
He is not a good person.
But he only pretends to have all of the 'good' burnt out of him, that's why he drinks.
These two films portray Bond _perfectly._
I hate the editing.
Editing was the huge problem with this movie, then weak villains
Probably my second favorite of the Craig Bond films. That opening where M's bodyguard just shoots up the place was great I thought, I was completely blind sighted by it. I do also appreciate the rationale that oil has replaced gold as the most valuable substance. There was definitely thought behind the film, and it would've been fascinating to see how this would've turned out without the Writer's Strike happening at the same time. But again, even with the troubles the film went through during production, it's far more enjoyable to me than Casino Royale was.
And I like to imagine that Jeffrey Wright in his scenes isn't actually acting with how fed up he is with everything, that's just how he felt with the filming of it and all the rewrites reducing his role in the film.
blind sighted hheehehhe

How in the world do you like this more than Casino Royale? Wtf is wrong with you?
@@wobblecrash XD I'll refer you to my comment in the previous video, but in short, I think Casino Royale is a dull slog that goes on for way too long. It has its moments certainly, but they're too few and far between.
I love Quantum of Solace. Not many people did when it came out but I feel like overall most are starting to warm up to it.
Quantum of Solace is the closest the franchise gets to explicit anti-imperialism. Camille is getting revenge for some Operation Condor stuff, the Frog Man is just some featureless resource speculator.
@@aweigh1010 the fact that you saw imperialism being mentioned and immediately ran to defend capitalism is such a self report and beyond funny.
Exactly, editing was the worst. I get it they tried to do Bourne like, but result was awful.
Quantum of Solace is actually my favorite. Honestly, I’m not trying to be contrarian. It’s short and brutal. If you had checked with me first, you wouldn’t look so foolish now.
Have I watched any bond films? No
Am I even slightly interested in them? No
Will I keep watching every video these guys make about the series? Obviously yeah
“Not anybody’s favorite”
Wrong. It’s mine.
Is your name “anybody”? Cause I don’t think it is
I enjoy Quantum a lot - I love the opening car chase - but I do think Casino Royale is much better and has more inventive action overall (PARKOUR) lol. My real favorite is Skyfall though. That movie blew me away, Javier Bardems performance was perfect and the emotional payoff was stronger - almost like a great combination of Casino and Quantum.
Yes, straight after Casino Royale is how I watched Quantum too. It works, but it does feel like a weird fever dream.
Quite frankly it was refreshing in Skyfall to see him care so much for a woman he has no sexual relationship and still nearly die for
quantum is underrated in my opinion and i 100 percent prefer it to spectre.
“I’m Strawberry Fields”
*eyes her up* “I bet”
I went and studied that shot of M and it looks like they CGI'd a spark on the medical pole in post-production to create the explanation that the bullet hit that instead of her
Oh shiit youre right, and a little clink sound to support that. The spark shouldve been bigger tho, you can hardly see it even when watching it frame by frame
They should’ve filmed wider. You can’t see that she doesn’t get shot.
*12:53** He obviously used the Face Back app that Will Ferrell made in the motion picture The Other Guys starring Marky Mark Wahlburger and the aforementioned Will Ferrell.
If I remember correctly, the plan relies on confirmed genius Q plugging a terrorist's computer directly into MI6 systems.
Do Never Say Never Again. The Bond movie that has Rowan Atkinson in.
And basically foreshadowing Johnny English.
Bens editing is so funny and underrated. We love Ben
and here I thought I was the only one who noticed the different suit in the beginning 🤣… I like the three-piece from the end of Casino Royale MUCH better

It's actually a real thing.
Probably doesn't count for much if they are smaller and weaker than their opponent.
Skyfall sounds like something Shirley Bassey would sing. I love it.
Speaking of Iron Balls, that is literally in one of the Johnny English films! Can't believe you missed the opportunity to reference that
