The brothers plot twist was pure Austin Powers. I remember that being all I could think about for the rest of the movie. Was it a meta-commentary? Coming full circle? Did they not konw? Will Blofeld's son be the next antagonist? Sooo many questions...
I'd love to see an Austin Powers sequel with Scott Evil as the villain. Austin and Dr. Evil have to work together to defeat him, since neither is smart enough to do it on their own.
The helicopter over the thames bit was probably a filming consideration. London has a really small area where hellicopters can be flown, and its basically just the thames. Emergency service helicopters can fly elsewhere, and you can get special permission but its hard and it takes a long time. Probably easier and safer just to fly where you are generally allowed. A villain may not care about that restriction (though flying elsewhere may draw unwanted attention), but from a practical filming perspective it makes sense.
The boys are now looking at this comment sweating thinking "Ah christ, please don't let this get any traction or attention or we've gotta do all those bloody movies too"

It's really weird, over the last few weeks I've watch all the Craig movies as a refresher for NTTD and I liked Skyfall way more, and disliked Spectre way more, than the first and only times I'd seen either movie. I think the problem is retrospectively Spectre doesn't really "earn" any of these big moments it tries to shoot for. Turns out Blofeld was behind everything in the first three movies! Umm, ok? Waltz was a great villain, because of course he was, but he got so little screentime and the entire movie is such "tell, don't show", that he's just kind of... there? and also ultimately pretty ineffectual for being such a seemingly omniscient villain. And then the romance with Madeleine, her professing her love for this guy that she only met like maybe 5 days earlier and didn't even *like* that much until they had one post-traumatic bang session, just felt so rushed and contrived. And the complete lack of chemistry between the two actors didn't help either.
The thing about Spectre is that to me it felt like it was two films worth of ideas crammed into one. It’s like the producers didn’t know if they’ve get Craig back for another one and so decided to introduce and deal with Blofeld all in one big story, and conveniently connected to all the past Craig films. While I don’t hate this film as much as others, from what I’ve seen, my opinion of it has gone down since I first saw it. The opening prologue is one of the best, if not the best, in the series but the rest of the film feels conflicting at times. As though they want to keep Craig’s aspects of Bond but also mix it in with some of the Moore aspects which does not work in a film that already feels all over the place at times.
i love when edgy antihero type characters who are completely willing to kill everyone they come up against, even some random people in the crossfire, even people theyre allied with through careless actions etc. and when faced with the ultimate bad guy, who can and will escape and do it all again, theyll just make a dumb speech and let the bad guy live
“I won’t stoop to your level, I’m better than you.” *villain looks just behind him to see the bread trail of blood, mayhem and carnage the hero took just to catch him.*
In the old films it would only be due to Blofeld legitimately evading Bond and not some kind of mercy. In this I guess its supposed to show he's changing but that arguably only makes sense/sticks if he doesnt make another appearance
That bit about the movie Lighthouse is hilariously accurate. I started it, got half way through, and stopped. I did indeed have my chance and was not going to finish it. Well done boys.
This analysis is a trip! I honestly have NO recollection of this movie at all. One of those where after 5 minutes of leaving the cinema I'd forgotten everything about it.
9:22 I hate Spectre, but that train fight is easily my favourite Bond fight scene. It should've been the climax of the movie - Bond defeats Blofeld, he takes a train ride with Swann to celebrate, and Hinx shows up to spoil the party.
One of the reasons I did like Spectre was that towards the end it really looked like Seydoux's character was just going to walk away from Bond and I was really into that idea. It'd be the first Bond girl (to my knowledge) who ends the relationship on screen on her terms, not dead or just thrown on the heap between movies. And she had good reason, but then she's just back for not reason at the end. I don't remember it well but I just remember being annoyed at them missing so much opportunities to do really good shit.
My criticism of the song "Writings on the Wall" is of its structure: it has this nice build up, with strings and horns and Smith singing "if I risked it all, would you break my fall?" and then the whole thing shifts to these drifting piano chords with Smith's thin reedy falsetto, and the tension is completely deflated. There's no payoff in the track and so it just feels formless and meandering.
I loved how they made a big deal about Monica Belucci being the oldest Bond girl, and then they give her almost nothing to do, and kill her off almost immediately. She deserved a better role. In fact, she should have been the main bond girl - she's still very attractive, can act, and her age is more appropriate for someone as old as Daniel Craig.
I really liked that part in this movie when they revealed that bond was actually blonde all along but blofield used ink in all the shampoo bottles in MI6
When Bond was getting his brain drilled and Blofeld said he wouldn’t be able to recognise faces anymore all I could think of was the ‘face blindness’ gag from Arrested Development.
As a huge Bond Fan, when they revealed that Blofeld was Bond's "Brother", I was like "Wait, is Bond now doing Austin Powers? This Mandele Effect sh1t is getting outta hand".
I'm glad you called out Spectre for how silly its premise is. The idea that the villain is not only secretly James Bond's brother, but was also secretly responsible for all of Bond's misfortune in his life, including the last three movies, is just such a blatant retcon that is such an overstretch in trying to make everything relevant, that it honestly probably would've improved the movie if they'd just left it out altogether.
Connecting those villains just didn't work... I mean, if you watch; 'Casino Royale', 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Skyfall' individually, none of those villains feel like they're bridged. This plotline was such an afterthought.
Oh goodness, yes. For one, the whole Blofeld being responsible for all the events that happened just made the previous films absolutely bad. They never needed to be that explicitly connected. What the hell were they thinking? I really hate the person who thought the telenovela approach was a good idea. It's really unforgivable.
They could have just said Quantum was a branch of SPECTRE, one of its many tentacles. Le Chifre and Roman Polanski were members of that branch of the organization. Just a couple lines is all that would be needed. Blofeld is just leader. He can hate Bond because he’s cost the organization lots of money, and Bond doesn’t need to have any sort of connection with him.
@@monksally exactly. It was a lousy attempt on the writers' part to be edgy and twisted. Yet the twists and reveals weren't anything new by today's standards.
Yeah it’s a genuinely terrible concept. I’d put this as Craig’s worst film, QOS was pretty meh but this ludicrous retcon diminished the previous films. I just choose to ignore it and pretend Spectre didn’t happen.
Bautista is definitely the best part of this film. I wish they would have brought him back for no time to die, again with no dialogue. It’s a total nod to jaws.

Honest to god, I have been saying “I’m going to watch The Lighthouse” for like a year and a half now and it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen, so that bit near the end really hit home for me.
The Third Man, as part of one of the most famous scenes in the film. "Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."
Yeah, I'm still amazed that they made the exact same mistake with Blofeld that Star Trek Into Darkness made with Khan. Even going through all the trouble of denying the character was exactly who everyone already figured out he was to the point of giving him a different name. And then the big "My name is Khan/Blofeld!" reveal falls completely flat within the context of the movie. It's only significant in an outside of the movie way to the audience like James said, and even then mainly just to the franchise fans. I remember there being a lot of confused muttering in the theater after the Blofeld reveal especially.
If I directed this, I probably would've shouted at the writers for trying that misdirection out. It never works and I'd rather be honest with my audience then build up anticipation for the events of the film rather than make people excited for who the next villain is (and fail spectacularly).
@@joshbuechler4867 In a way, yeah. But those reveals were not that frustrating compared to modern Khan and modern Blofeld. I think because people were more inquisitive about main villains. The reveals of Miss Moneypenny and John Blake were more about closing out the movies and coming together to complete the pieces of the puzzle. At least that's how I see it.
I remember watching this film with my mother, who was a big Bond fan since it began in the 60s and halfway through this one she just went "this is a bit boring, isn't it? Is it over soon?" Perfect sum up from my mother, there. Even Daniel Craig looked bored out of his nut in this.
In my opinion, the film was fine to me until the third act (returning to England), it all seemed too easy then; finding Swan very fast, managing to escape the crumbling MI6, being able to shot the helicopter, seems too good to be true.
We are the RADIOHEAD fans shown @ 20:27 !!! Crazy to see ourselves randomly in your video, I watch weekly. Thanks Mr Sunday Movies and Ben from Canada!
The whole point (I thought) of bond "retiring" and sucking at his tests in the previous movie was to trick the bad guy into thinking he sucked, when he really still didn't suck. But maybe I'm wrong.
Blofeld: remember when you you're parents died ina skiing accident? well it was me bond. Bond: no... Blofeld: and not just that... Remember all the villains you fought bond? Well, it was me bond. I created this organization and all these villains because you pushed me out of MY family Bond: what? Even silva? Why him? He was crazy, more of a liability tos spectre to be honest. Blofeld: oh it gets even better? You ever notice how you can't maintain a long term relationship even if your female partners survive? Well, it was me bond. We've been micro dosing you with a unique concoction of mine in your drinks for years. Your now incapable of forming a true authentic marrietal connection with women. Why do you think you have the uncontrollable sex drive of a komodo dragon in heat? Bond: ugh! Why? What is wrong with you? Blofeld: my motivations are beyond your understanding!
The most frustrating thing about this one is that the opening shot is so spectacular and the rest of the movie slowly erodes that goodwill. It’s just not fun. Lea Seydoux is on the verge of tears the whole time. It’s just so DOUR.
Dour is exactly the word I use to describe it. There's no energy or life there, it doesn't feel like a Bond film. Even the darkest Bond flicks have a playfulness to them.
@ yeah, I can see that. I thought it took itself seriously for this era, but not so much that it wasn’t recognisable from another Bond film, in my opinion.
I have not watched more then 60 seconds of any James Bond movie yet I have watched every caravan of garbage episode they’ve done about James Bond movies. Also I was planning on watching the lighthouse 🙁
It felt like too much of a plot convenience that SPECTRE was behind *everything* from the previous films. Le Chiffre, Quantum, and Silva were all just SPECTRE's pawns? And Bond and Blofeld grew up together? The world's greatest secret agent and the head of the world's biggest criminal organization just happened to be foster brothers?
Ok, I know Blofeld "twist" seems lame, but I just rewatched the movie yesterday and it makes perfect sense for the overall character arc of Bond. The whole movie is about him confronting his past and finally letting it go. Who's a better villain in that situation than someone close to him from this very past, responsible for all he has suffered, for the death of anyone he loved or cared for? It makes his decision at the end to not kill Blofeld so impactful - Bond finally broke the vicious cycle of pain and destruction and refused to take the revenge he was after for so long.
That's the exact reason why it's lame. It is way too on the nose. Nobody missed those thematic elements, because the message is rubbed right in our faces. It is spelled out by the characters directly telling us the message. Nobody missed it and it does not make it good at all.
The point of you not only being that guy to enjoy both kinds of films BUT ALSO having planned to watch The Lighthouse immediately after This (the 4th part of the series in which the boys discuss the bond series) for the first time is the premise, setup and Punchline of a fantastically delivered joke.
There actually was a previous Radiohead song that was planned for Spectre called Man of War focusing on Bond dealing with the paranoia of the spy game which fits with Spectre’s introduction but it was found out that they wrote and produced the song beforehand years prior and Eon Production didn’t like that, believing that they needed an original song for the movie for Academy Award for Best Original Song so they asked Radiohead to write a new original song for the movie, leading to what we know now.
As my girlfriend loves to point out, the problem with the song is that the octopus imagery leads you believe there will be some octopus on bond action. Distinct lack of any octopi in the film though
One of the things I liked about the first couple Craig movies was that they eschewed the tradition of Bond just getting a little cut on the side of his face during even the biggest of fights, and let him actually get beaten up pretty good, which makes him more grounded and sympathetic. But by the time we get to Spectre, he's brawling with Dave Bautista and emerging without a scratch on him.
A huge part of the Bond formula is kind of just copying whatever’s popular in action movies and really movies in general at the time of the films release. Sometimes it blends into the film really well and you don’t even think about it, other times it sticks out really bad and all you can think about during the film is “huh, this is just like (insert most popular action movie of that year)”
I have to say, I saw a thumbnail of this channel months ago. I remember it was for some movie I liked and did not want to hear some people trashing it. I got bored the other day and clicked on the GoldenEye breakdown. Great stuff, I have been hooked. I watched all of the bond stuff so far. Overall the Craig movies are my favorite. Specter was just, sort of bad. I think Casino Royal is a better move, but SkyFall is my favorite bond film. If that makes sense lol. Perhaps because it was my mom's favorite and it was one of the last movies we saw together. Also Quantum of Solace wasn't bad imo. Was it as good as Casino Royal, no. I still enjoyed it. Like I said great stuff. Looking forward to getting caught up on everything.
Starting at 29:10 -- you guys go into a overly complex explanation about the cross-over in audiences. I don't know what you would call that little thing but I live for that. Simply amazing lol I'm subscribing
I totally consider Daniel Craig Voiced games as canon like 007 Goldeneye Reloaded and Blood Stone taking place between QOS and Skyfall. Would explain the weary and world heavy Bond of Skyfall.
I couldn't take this movie seriously after Bond had those ludicrous trousers in the snow scenes. This must be a reason why he only wears suits because his attire otherwise isn't great for a spy who wants to blend in.
On the topic of Bond not killing Blofeld, I used to think it was terrible he didn’t because he’s only spared so he can be in a sequel. BUT upon rewatching I’ve convinced myself Bond spared Blofeld because Judi Dench spent 3 whole movies being like “Yo Bond don’t kill literally everyone you see maybe? Some people can be used for information”. So to me, Bond not killing Blofeld was a way to honor what Judi Dench’s M has been trying to teach him since the beginning of his career
Also, in Skyfall, Bond gives Q a speech about “not pulling the trigger” (regarding impersonal hacking vs sending an agent into the field). And in Spectre, M tells C that a license to kill is also a license not to kill. So Bond not killing Blofeld is a thematically consistent moment, even if it doesn’t feel logical in the moment.

The brothers plot twist was pure Austin Powers. I remember that being all I could think about for the rest of the movie. Was it a meta-commentary? Coming full circle? Did they not konw? Will Blofeld's son be the next antagonist? Sooo many questions...
His daughter is the villain in one of John Gardner's reboots so anything's possible.

“I won’t stoop to your level, I’m better than you.”
*villain looks just behind him to see the bread trail of blood, mayhem and carnage the hero took just to catch him.*

Bespoke Comment. "Catchphrase!"
That’s happened a few times man
That would've sucked, copying specifically what makes the pacing quite poor in many previous bond films.
Just like this film

Damn you've put into words how I feel about that song for 6 years, fair play!
I think you hit the nail on the head, and yet, this song bafflingly won the Oscar for "Best Original Song"...
But is she the heir to the seydoux fortune? Thought not…
I don’t think she died actually
I really liked that part in this movie when they revealed that bond was actually blonde all along but blofield used ink in all the shampoo bottles in MI6
"Fuckin' ice down your knees, Bond. You old piece of shit" had me HOWLING.

When Bond was getting his brain drilled and Blofeld said he wouldn’t be able to recognise faces anymore all I could think of was the ‘face blindness’ gag from Arrested Development.

What he needed were those teeny tiny glasses he wore in Blade Runner. That would have made him perfect. Or steel balls.
He along with the pre opening titles action scene was the best part of the movie

See also Moneypenny and Robin John Blake.
@@joshbuechler4867 In a way, yeah. But those reveals were not that frustrating compared to modern Khan and modern Blofeld. I think because people were more inquisitive about main villains.
The Ralph Fiennes In Bruges reference is the best thing I've ever seen in one of these, Bravo BEN!

She's a genius. I had no idea that that's why I hate this film.
Holy shit that In Bruges reference made my life.
The Blofeld thing in this movie also bears a striking resemblance to the Palpatine thing from Rise of Skywalker. Huh...
Star Trek Into Darkness as well.

"James Bond Goes Tropical" should be a title.
