  • After Die Another Day it was time for a reinvention of the James Bond franchise. The answer became in the form of the blonde haired blue eyed actor Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. Bringing the character yet again to the modern day it's considered to be one of, if not the best film in the franchise with incredible action, drama, revenge and romance with the inclusion of Vesper Lynd. Plus parkour. But like...good. Thanks for supporting our Caravan Of Garbage review.

It's a pity the writing is catastrophically bad. One great chase scene, one very good fight scene, one very good action scene. That's about it. If you know hold'em, the poker scenes are disastrous. There's zero chemistry between Bond and Vesper. The writing for them is just terrible.

I think they changed it because a. nobody plays baccarat anymore but everyone knows the basic rules to poker so it's more relatable, and b. poker is a more visually interesting game to follow, based as it is more on skill than just memorisation of strategy.

One other reason for the change in direction of the series from Die Another Day to Casino Royale was the Austin Powers films. Daniel Craig said in an interview once that those films were responsible as they were big parodies of the Bond films, and after their releases Bond probably wouldn’t be taken seriously anymore by audiences. So the reason for going in a grittier direction, Bond just murdering anyone he could, the brutal torture sequence and just getting beat to shit is because they not only needed to keep up with modern spy thrillers, like Bourne, but because people wouldn’t be able to take Bond seriously after Austin Powers. So they really had to show people this wasn’t going to be a Brosnan/Moore pun quipping comedian.

    • @PittsburghSonido

I went into this movie almost completely oblivious to the press around it. What I did know was that EON productions never pass up an opportunity to do the bare minimum, the theme I heard online was meh, and they had replaced baccarat with poker. I was, to put it simply, resigned to it being average at best.
Boy was I wrong. The theme song worked, poker worked, and EON had actually adapted a bond story properly for the first time in decades.
It’s still my favorite Bond film (with OHMSS & Goldfinger right behind it).

I told Mads I was a big fan of his work in Hannibal and loved him in Bond, but I felt the puffer took away from the character's toughness and made him seem like, as you guys said, the nerd bullied in HS.
Nolan, the gentleman that he is, disagreed and said actually it's the puffer that makes him such a great villain.
