Throat Singing with a Shruti Box & In-Depth Throat Singing Tutorial

In this video, Didge Project's Jerry Walsh demonstrates the three styles of throat singing and how to do them with a shruti box (Indian drone instrument). The three styles of throat singing are Kargyraa, Khoomei, and Sygyt.

Is it just me that finds Kargyraa easier than the others?

Still can't grasp what I should do to the voice box to emit xoomey sound, while kargyraa and overtones go out easily though unstably

Yeah I find it easier to get into that growly voice instead of straining my vocal chords, still trying to learn how to create a larger range of pitches with it though

Awesome mate! Been able to develop kargyraa (not great or consistent but it's there) thanks to your videos. Control of the overtone pitch in sygyt or khoomei is escaping me however... I can get a basic overtone, but with zero control over it.

The shruti box is pretty much a very limited accordion so I'm quite sure it would work.

This is incredible! Well done. I just got my shruti and practicing overtones. I can whistle now but how do you filter out the base tone to just hear the whistle?

This is so awesome. Always been interested in this stuff. Is it harmful to your vocal chords/folds? I can't imagine constriction of the vocal chords being healthy.

We recommend that you do not strain, and if you feel any irritation in your throat to stop immediately. There are many techniques that can be developed to produce throat singing without straining your voice.
