I'm age 67/8. I started college in 1973. Can you imagine, Freshman year Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zepplin, Carol King, Stevie Wonder, Mott the Hoople, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, T-Rex. and on and on and on... I thought rock-n-roll can never die. (and we are, Rock-n-Roll, DOA)

@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews EVERY SINGLE PERSON that I've met who was born around that time and era says that exact same thing. I remember classical orchestras on TV on Sunday nights. We heard and appreciated, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Singing Nuns, Mama and the Papas, the Beatles, Patsy Cline, Jimmy Hendrix as well as (in my case, jazz and folk) I live in a college town where kids dance and sing to music from 50+ years ago because the music industry totally destroyed everything that was organic and replaced it with sub-mediocre, synthetic, inconsequential, inconsiderable trifling noise.

Great job, Kenny. Identifying one's top 10 albums of all time is a very, very hard task. I can't do it yet. But I have collected 560 albums that I really love into an iTunes playlist. Jazz, rock, soul, blues, world-as old as the 50s and as new as yesterday. Playing music like a radio station of all your favorite stuff is very satisfying. You are inspiring me. Great list. It’s cool that you have albums that everybody knows about and ones nobody talks about. Also points out the quality of the 70’s music scene-Stevie, Carole, Steely Dan, etc
    My list might go:
    10) Beatles Abbey Road
    9) Steely Dan Aja
    8) Sinatra The Concert Sinatra
    7) Maynard Ferguson MF Horn
    6) Count Basie I Told You So
    5) Sinatra She Shot Me Down
    4) Don Ellis Live at Fillmore
    3) Maynard Ferguson Maynard ‘61
    2) Beatles Sgt Pepper’s
    1) Maynard Ferguson A Message from Newport
That’s not necessarily the best Count Basie album of all time, but that and MF Horn got me into jazz as a teenager, circa 1975.

Lot of " my top ten albums" you tubes out there... growing up in the sixties and seventies there was a constant flow of new music that had a lot of different musical overtones or influences. There was something for everyone. And there was always that "hey man check this out" thing going on with your peers. What a great time to grow up. With the resurgence of vinyl it's great to have these "top ten albums" videos especially when they remind us of music that we either forgot about or dismissed at the time . Doesn't matter what genre or what we actually listened to at the time it seems like it's all woven into the fabric of who we are musically. From AM top 40 to the jukebox at the burger joint down the street to FM underground radio and the records that we played over and over again sitting on the floor in our bedroom reading the album covers and liner notes. What a great time and place to grow up and come of age musically. Thanks for turning us on to your Top Ten. "Hey check this out dude"

Beautiful "in the pocket" list. Instant subscription for your wisdom and demeanor also! I have always had an intuition that if I listened to more of Marvin Gaye than just the popular songs I would be gone. For you to put his album equal to or above Stevie Wonder means I am going to put it on for the ride home. My two favorite sleeper songs by Mr. Wonder are If It's Magic and Something Out Of The Blue but As was my first love. I have three recommendations if you don't mind the implication that you may not be familiar with them.❤ Skylarking by XTC may be the most Beatlesque album ever made and Andy Partridge may be just the sort of outlier you appreciate. My favorite album with, as you said, "no fatigue factor", is Twelve Dreams Of Doctor Dardonicus by Spirit and I am almost certain you would love Randy California if you got to know him, although Jay Ferguson brings some A+ songs to this album as well. Finally my all-time dark horse pop album is Innocence Mission by Innocence Mission. The lush arrangements and heart-wrenching lyrics and vocals of Karen Peris may be just the prescription you need! Love you and will peruse your channel thoroughly after hearing Mr. Gaye.

Man Kenny, Its truly hard to pick a top 10 in any genre of music. But of all time? Difficult. I like many of your selections and cannot deny any of them. For me its..Marvin Gaye-Whats goin on, The Allman Bros band live at the Fillmore East, Jimi Hendrix (hell, you pick one), But mine was his Band Of Gypsies LP, The Postal Service-Give Up, George Duke-Feel, Santana-Moonflower, Aretha Franklin-Live at the Filmore West, The Zawinul Syndicate-World Tour, Pat Metheny Group-OFFRAMP. (and most of his early works), and lastly, The Mahavishnu Orchestra-Between Nothingness and Eternity. I could list 10 more which are right on par with or maybe even better than these. So many. LONG LIVE GREAT MUSIC! I'd have to start my 2nd 10 with Miles Davis-Jack Johnson and.................Issac Hayes-Hot Butterd Soul and...and......OK I'm stopping.

This is a truely great list very much indeed. Although we profoundly disagree on Bitches Brew wich in my ears is a complete bore (I'm sorry!). And for the sake of there being so much good music I choose only one album from every artist. That results in the following top 10 today (august 1 2024)
    1. FIVE LEAVES LEFT - NICK DRAKE
    2. REVOLVER - THE BEATLES
    3. EVERYBODY DIGS BILL EVANS - BILL EVANS TRIO
    4. AFTER MIDNIGHT - NAT KING COLE
    5. ASCENSEUR POUR L’ ÉCHAFAUD - MILES DAVIS
    6. BLUE AFTERNOON - TIM BUCKLEY
    7. NIGHTBEAT - SAM COOKE
    8. GRACELAND - PAUL SIMON
    9. DUKE ELLINGTON AND JOHN COLTRANE - DUKE ELLINGTON & JOHN COLTRANE
    10. HOT BUTTERED SOUL - ISAAC HAYES
And Joni Mitchells Hejira and Ella & Louis from Ella Fitzgerald en Louis Armstrong as honourable mentions.

Well, I came here because of TH-cam recommending your video. No regrets here. Top 10 is a nearly impossible mission for sure but yours was quite interesting. Granted, Stevie Wonder doesn't get as much recognition he deserves.
Thank you for pointing this Eivets Rendow album I wasn't aware of, I'd be sure to check it out.
So, let's give it a shot of a top 10 that is sure to surprise, in no particular order so I won't number them:
    - The Charlatans - Some Friendly
    - My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
    - Underworld - The Second Toughest of the Infants (nearly impossible to get on vinyl, a repress is sorely needed)
    - The Moody Blues - To Our Children's Children's Children
    - Steve Miller Band - Fly like an Eagle
    - Dead Can Dance - Into the Labyrinth
    - Joe Walsh - But seriously folks (or any other Joe Walsh album for that matter)
    - Radiohead - OK Computer (or Kid A hard to choose between the 2)
    - Seefeel - Quique (again nearly impossible to get on vinyl. really need a repress)
    - Noir Desir - Du Ciment sous les plaines (great 90's rock from France, Og press is hard to find but it's been repressed recently if I'm not mistaken but I have the original, bought on the day of release 30 years ago..boy, just saying that, doesn't make me feel any younger lol)
Some brit pop/rock, some electro, some classics, some unclassifiable, and a French rock band to finish
I deliberately leave out the big names (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Beach Boys, AC/DC, Dire Straits, Genesis, John Lee Hooker, ZZ Top, Samshing Pumpkins, and so on...) to present a list people might not know of and might be interested to find out.
    Some honorable mentions:
    - Stereolab - Transient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements (maybe not the best album to discover this band works but probably one of their best.)
    - Orbital - In Sides (seems that there is hope for a reissue, don't bother getting an original it's way to expensive)
    - Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
I must admit even a Top 100 I would probably struggle to put all my favorites in there hehe.

They're such singular works and such perfect storms helped create them, with Love nearly breaking up and Van Morrison not really tell the musicians what to play but rather trusting them as jazz musicians to know how to flesh out and compliment his songs, which of course they did phenomenally.

Thanks for this. I just stumbled upon your page and I see you've got quite a few other videos for me to digest! Looking forward to them. We're both about the same age, so it's not surprising that I wouldn't quibble with any of your choices. (Scanning what I can make out of your record collection, I'd love to know more about your background. Are you a musician?) A few personal alternatives off the top of my head, suggested by your list:
Miles Davis: I'm passionate about most of his catalog, but maybe I'd go with "Filles de Kilimanjaro" today. I guess I could do a top 40 of just Miles Davis titles.
Stevie Wonder -- Any of the albums you mentioned between "Music of My Mind" and "Hotter Than July," but I think "Innervisions" is also my favorite. So, I immediately broke my first rule there. (Also, you forgot to mention that "Songs in the Key of Life" has two LPs AND the bonus 7-inch -- so it's even more than a double album!) Favorite single ever: "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"
Joni Mitchell -- Impossible to choose between "Blue," "Court & Spark," "Hissing of Summer Lawns" and "Hejira," but today I feel like the latter.
Horace Silver -- "Song for My Father"
The Beatles -- "White Album" (or "Revolver" or "Rubber Soul")
Rolling Stones -- "Exile on Main Street" (or "Beggar's Banquet" or "Let It Bleed" or "Sticky Fingers"
Bob Dylan -- "Blonde on Blonde" (or "Blood on the Tracks" or "Highway 61")
Aretha Franklin -- "Young, Gifted & Black" (or "I Never Loved a Man...") Favorite single: "Until You Come Back to Me," written for her by Stevie Wonder.
Bill Evans -- "Village Vanguard Sessions" ("Waltz for Debby" and "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" -- though "At Shelley's Manne-Hole" is another essential)
Elvis Costello -- "Armed Forces" (or, possibly, "This Year's Model" or "King of America" -- but his album with Burt Bacharach is also magnificent)
    RUNNERS UP:
Allen Toussaint -- "American Tunes," his final record. HIS "Waltz for Debby" gives me goosebumps, too.
Graham Parker -- "Squeezing Out Sparks"
Staple Singers -- "Be Altitude: Respect Yourself"
Prince -- "Sign o' the Times"
Talking Heads -- "More Songs About Buildings and Food"
    Nirvana -- "In Utero"
    Cannonball Adderley -- "Somethin' Else"
John Hiatt -- "Bring the Family"
    David Bowie -- "Hunky Dory"
Ry Cooder -- "Paradise & Lunch"
Sorry I went on for so long!

Kenny, to get the best sound you have to be in the sweet spot to hear the surround sound. If you google it you will find the artist who recorded in Qsound. The late 80s and early 90s were when they recorded in Qsound. The reason it didn't go over is you didn't have to buy any new equipment to hear the improvement in sound. The manufactures didn't make any money from this advancement in sound reproduction, but the consumer did. Take care and God Bless,
    Jeff Woods

As for Marvin Gaye, another absolute masterpiece is the album called Here, My Dear. An album he wrote about his troubles and divorce with Anna Gordy Gaye. One of my top albums of all time. Thanks for the videos.

Lovely list, Kenny! A lot of your favorite albums are favorite albums of mine as well. I love Forever Changes, Innervisions, Songs In The Key of Life, Pet Sounds, What's Going On. I understand your love for Astral Weeks and I let some of my friends also have a listen to A Love Supreme, which I bought a few years ago. I love John Coltrane (and McCoy Tyner) especially for My Favorite Things. I discovered Kind Of Blue last year, but I need to give Bitches Brew another listen. Tapestry I still have to check out, never listened to it. For The Beatles my favorite album would be "Abbey Road". Thanks for suggesting a Stevie Wonder album that I didn't know of! I never checked out any of his 1960's albums.

Just Subbed loved your content. I have to agree with your Songs in the Key of life assessment. That is the same reason why it's my number 2 but my number 1 is Music of my mind. Forgive me if you have already done this but I would love to see your rank on all Stevie and why!! Cheers!

Beautiful honest selections. Gaye tops my personal list as well and I’ve made sure to provide a copy to each of my children. He simply perfected all that had come before (classical, jazz, Sinatra, funk, Beatles) and molded it into something that still sounds ahead of what’s on the radio. And then to have it be recorded as a song cycle is simply staggering. My personal list varies only slightly from yours so little to quibble about. Great selections and keep up the good work.

When I think back to my childhood I remember the first time I ever seen the album Pearl, by Janis Joplin. I think it was her best one ever and hearing it as a young boy was a thrill. Mercedes Benz is a song you just can't forget! Cosmo's Factory by Creedence is coming to mind too.

@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews The other day i remembered I had the Classic Records pressing of Tapestry and spun it, it's absolutely fantastic to my sensibilities, have you compared the MFSL to Classic Records at any point ?

Kenny - love your list. I too am a big Motown fan (I am from Detroit) - and just before you named your number 1 album I was saying to myself, “where the hell is Marvin” - but you got it right. I just recently bought the “Detroit mix” of “What’s Going On” - I recommend it.
By the way you can never tell your kids enough how much you love them.

That "Detroit Mix" is fantastic! Wasn't it an earlier mix done at Motown? I forget the story, but it somehow seems both grittier AND cleaner.

Kenny, it is so very hard to pick ten albums that I consider my favorites over a lifetime of listening.
For example, your #1 pick, WHAT'S GOING ON by Marvin Gaye is one of my all-time favorites. I bought it when it came out. Side one is one of the most beautiful compositions and arrangements ever. I could say side 1 is the best single side of any album I know.
But there are whole albums I love more. Bob Dylan's albums from 1963-1967 are the pinnacle of his career and the albums I have played the most in my lifetime.
I could say my all-time favorite double album is a tie between BLONDE ON BLONDE by Bob Dylan and AT FILLMORE EAST by the Allman Brothers.
Like you I love The Beatles and Van Morrison, but I never could pick an absolute favorite
But what about women artists? I have hundreds of albums by women singers and/or singer-songwriters. Here's a few that I play the entire album over and over:
    - THE SECRET LIFE OF J. EDDY FINK by Janis Ian
    - YOUNG IN ALL THE WRONG WAYS - Sara Watkins
    - OUR VERSION OF EVENTS by Emeli Sandé
And I love all the jazz albums you review. Many of them could easily be my 1-10.
But what about soundtracks? Two I play over and over are:
    - GATTACA by Michael Nyman
    - THE MUSIC FROM PETER GUNN by Henry Mancini
This still leaves dozens of albums I've played hundreds of times.

You are very correct that it is extremely difficult to take the music of your entire life and attempt to pick the best 10.....although I love the Henri Mancini Peter Gun and the Bob dylan mentions. The Peter Gun album, although it was music from the TV series, it is a very underrated jazz album
