I just l watched your video and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your story and your low key approach. Thanks for not blasting out but for just telling us your jazz story. I especially enjoyed your honesty about 'Bitches Brew' and returning it. It was not my introduction to Miles thank goodness ('Something Else' was my intro) but I didn't get it either but mostly because it was such a departure from his beautiful body of work which preceded it. Very nice selection of artists. It refreshing to see an "influencer" showing something other than 60's Blue Note hard bop. Jazz has such a rich history and many recent newcomers are unfortunately (perhaps unknowingly) biased by the availability of the Blue Note reissues.
Wonderful video Mazzy....I have many of the same collection of records....I enjoy the Chet Baker sings which is rare to find original, great reissue and I have so many of Ella on Verve and the song books and also the Nate King Cole on Capitol, but the black and white box set I missed I think on Mosiac records if I'm correct....got to hear the Herbie Hancock Sextent....and of course I have have the most of Miles on Prestige and Columbia records...great to hear you got to see and hear Bill Evans....also have so many of his records on Riverside...great story about the Keystone Korner ....🎼🎵🎶🎵....Ed in New York....🌃🌃🌃🌃

A superb snipet of your jazz collection. I only have about 50 jazz lps, with 8 Miles Davis lps being the most. I also like my Coltrane lps, various Blue Note artists lps, Gerry Mulligan lps and my Tubby Hayes lps.

Awesome! I have always loved blakey. He had some amazing underrated work. 'Indestructible' is awesome, and has some of my favorite songs from him. 'Album of the Year' is also really good, but it was released in the 80s and we know how jazzed was interpreted during that decade.

We're simpatico on several artists. 👍 Often for me the desire for other releases from an artist would began w/ word of mouth in the 70s (high school) or from magazine reviews, charting, etc. & of course recommendations from friends & musician peers (college). Once invested, I'd follow up w/ their other LPs as long as they were 🎶 enjoyable for me. I used to drum so Blakey is too way up their for me. Others: Miles, Mingus, Brubeck, Coltrane, D. Gordon, B. Evans, J. Smith, Hancock, Getz, Armstrong & Ellington....to name a few. 🙄 One somewhat relatable quirk w/ ME for buying LPs over the few decades is collecting albums due to the ARTWORK of the artist's & label's design efforts but I only do so w/ Jazz 🎶. Good stuff Mazzy.
The Riverside release "Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane", that you showed is probably my favourite Monk record. Coltrane improvises masterfully over Monk's angular compositions, and Monk was probably stoked to have Trane in his band at that time, and, I think, you can hear that in Monk's own playing. The whole band is just cooking and the record sounds great and has a "live" feel. It also features Wilbur Ware on bass. Regarding Nat King Cole: Mazzy, what's your opinion on the album he did with George Shearing?

What Coltrane pressings are those on Atlantic? They look beautiful! Great video Mazzy. One of my favorite Nat Cole records is “Just One Of Those Things” its got such an attitude and swing to it!
Miles Davis tops the jazz artist I own the most discs by - Live At Carnegie Hall is probably my all time favourite Miles Davis album - ferocious soloing! I love all of his eras of music - but especially the late 60s / early 70s transition from jazz to jazz fusion to jazz rock. Bill Evans’ Waltz For Debbie is a beautiful album - I have my dad’s vinyl copy. The Nat Cole Trio is incredible, and sadly overlooked - his piano playing is extraordinary. I’m also a big fan of Cannonball Adderley - I love his late 60s work with Joe Zawinul on electric piano. Final mention needs to go out to King Curtis Live at the Fillmore - a wonderful, soulful, jazz album.
What a wonderful collection of jazz records. I'm not a hardcore fan of jazz music so I only have a small collection... but probably the ones that I treasure the most is a pair of albums by Dorothy Ashby.
I remember seeing the iconic painting of "The Rose" by beat artist Jay DeFeo at the Beat Culture exhibition (De Young Museum) in San Francisco in 1996. The eleven foot tall 3D painting was in a special darkened room with special lighting and the sound of Sketches of Spain by Miles. It was an unforgettable transcendental experience to say the least.
... don't feel bad, I can certainly relate - when I was 15 I bought "Are You Experienced?" based solely on the psychedelic cover - I didn't "get it", it sat there for about a month until I gave it another shot, then after 2 or 3 more listens I finally understood and grew to love everything by Jimi - same with Bitches Brew, took quite a few listens there too, hahahaha!
Wonderful post, as usual. I’d be curious to know how many Keith Jarrett titles you have. I say this as a result of he having such an extensive catalogue (ECM, Impulse, … ). An ECM “best of” from would be interesting, assuming you are partial to the catalogue.
Apert from the 'obvious' usual suspects, Lee Morgan and Horace Parlan are two artists that have really grown to become some of my favorite jazz musicians.
Glad you showed 'Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie'. I actually prefer it to the 'Mac the Knife' live in Germany LP. I'm a little confused over that Charlie Parker with Machito LP you showed. I have a UK 10" with the same cover. Perhaps they reissued it?

Charles Lloyd at Monterey, Charles Lloyd at the Fillmore West and The Suisse Movement with Les McCann and Eddie Harris. Were memorable to me. And a special nod to 1969 with Eddie Harris album "Silver Cycles."
Your jazz collection is amazing. My interest with jazz is very new and it’s taking me down a rabbit hole that includes buying a digital piano and lessons. (All very positive to keep me grounded for our busy and crazy world.) I’d appreciate your suggestions for similar artists you think I may enjoy. For obvious reasons I’m focusing on piano artists. Here are the ones I’ve bought vinyl of so you can see my preference: *Vince Guaraldi (my initial entry to jazz all began with his Peanuts work but I love so many of his other albums too.) *Bill Evans *Dave Brubeck *Keith Jarrett *Thelonious Monk
We share a lot of the same tastes. I’m going to have to dig a little deeper into the Nat Cole discog. I’m in just about as deep as you with the others. Random: Duke Ellington is one that comes to mind that shares quite a bit of my shelf space. Mingus too. Art Pepper. MJQ. The whole Lennie Tristano clique (Konitz, Marsh, etc.). And Sonny Rollins of course.
You referenced Hugo Montenegro covering Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." I believe you meant Mongo Santamaria. Understandable mistake that takes nothing from this great presentation of yours! Thanks!
When you think about the influence of VC videos I believe it has made a huge difference with jazz. So many people that their only knowledge of jazz was Kenny G playing in a elevator have found that this is a new and exciting world. So many have suddenly become great jazz fans. Obviously for me Miles Davis hits me on an emotional scale and I have by far the most from him. Herbie Hancock, his early work is a favorite and then Morgan. I need to push more into other labels, too easy to be swallowed up by Blue Note. Great list

Did you see that Fran Lebowitz doc from last year called Pretend It’s a City ?? It turns out Fran was pretty good friends with Charles Mingus in his later years....who knew? She tells some great Mingus stories to Spike Lee, along with other jazz musician tales I wouldn’t have expected. Also, anyone here who’s into jazz, and hasn’t come across the film “A Great Day in Harlem” definitely should check it out - it’s been uploaded to TH-cam for a while & I believe is still here. It’s one of the all time best documentaries about musicians. Thanks for never forgetting Nat King Cole in your jazz videos! People need to get those trio records and see what they’re missing. And a suggestion for future promotion, if you’re into him - the amazing King Pleasure.
Love Miles but he, ' 70's albums never clicked with me { apart from " We want Miles" ] . The 50,s and 60's were he,s best 2 decades especially the sublime " Kind of Blue " . Cannonball Adderley would have featured in my top 10 ," Live in San Francisco" and " Live in Chicago " being my two personal favourites . Art Blakeys" Free for all " is a stormer of an album with the band firing on all sixes and John Coltranes " My favourite things" is he,s best L.p. in my humble opinion . Monks " April in Paris Live" is another fave featuring the great Charlie Rouse and "Soul Station " by Hank Mobley , Chet Bakers " Smokin" , Mingus's " Blues and Roots" and lastly Jackie Mclean with" Let freedom ring ". Quick little anecdote. My wife and I were having dinner at our boss's house one evening. Ella was singing over our chat and after dinner we listened to her properly. The next day, her death was announced to a saddened world. Turns out we were listening to her at the moment she passed. True story. Bless Ella: the greatest, just in front of 'Lady Day'.
I know you're a Sun Ra Fan Norman, do you know "Strange Celestial Rd"? It's a similar vibe to "Sextant", released by what was a very hip post-punk label, Y records, in 1980..

Will echo the remarks about Lush Life from John Coltrane, often overlooked for some of his more spiritual recordings which were some very serious recordings, but in the end Lush Life is his recording that I play most often of the many that I have.
I always wondered what direction the later Miles groups would have gone if Ron Carter had remained. Carter is supposed to have left because Miles wanted him to play electric but he wanted to keep playing stand-up bass. Two scenarios could have unfolded, Carter could have switched to electric or Miles could have let him continue playing stand-up. Either way, the history of jazz bass playing could have been very different indeed.
Appreciate the mention of Duke Ellington perhaps the greatest of the 20th century. Every artist you cite is indebted to the man. Mt. Rushmore = Louis Armstrong.

Man i dont like seeing cling film on my records, its like its not mine if i havent unwrapped it and you cant enjoy the artwork properly 😢 i also inherited some records and all the ones with shrink-wrap then film had clung to the artwork and creased, so if you pulled it off it would stick amd damage the cover. So sad.

I wouldn't say Miles is my favourite either, but its quite easy to accumulate a large number if Miles albums due to the large spectrum of recordings he did. I must have 70+ Miles albums and yet I am not even remotely a completist and can name several jazz artists I prefer over him.
I have the Thelonious Monk Sam Records soundtrack album and the vinyl is so noisy. I must have been unlucky to get a bad copy, but the music is great. Oh well.
Yes please do one on CDs. I love your show but do not love vinyl.Crackles and pops were not recorded by the artists in the studio so I don’t believe I should have to hear them when listening.

Wonderful post, as usual. I’d be curious to know how many Keith Jarrett titles you have. I say this as a result of he having such an extensive catalogue (ECM, Impulse, … ). An ECM “best of” from would be interesting, assuming you are partial to the catalogue.

Apert from the 'obvious' usual suspects, Lee Morgan and Horace Parlan are two artists that have really grown to become some of my favorite jazz musicians.

Glad you showed 'Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie'. I actually prefer it to the 'Mac the Knife' live in Germany LP. I'm a little confused over that Charlie Parker with Machito LP you showed. I have a UK 10" with the same cover. Perhaps they reissued it?

Charles Lloyd at Monterey, Charles Lloyd at the Fillmore West and The Suisse Movement with Les McCann and Eddie Harris. Were memorable to me. And a special nod to 1969 with Eddie Harris album "Silver Cycles."

My interest with jazz is very new and it’s taking me down a rabbit hole that includes buying a digital piano and lessons. (All very positive to keep me grounded for our busy and crazy world.)
I’d appreciate your suggestions for similar artists you think I may enjoy.

Random: Duke Ellington is one that comes to mind that shares quite a bit of my shelf space. Mingus too. Art Pepper. MJQ. The whole Lennie Tristano clique (Konitz, Marsh, etc.). And Sonny Rollins of course.

Really really really want In A Silent Way....
When you think about the influence of VC videos I believe it has made a huge difference with jazz. So many people that their only knowledge of jazz was Kenny G playing in a elevator have found that this is a new and exciting world. So many have suddenly become great jazz fans. Obviously for me Miles Davis hits me on an emotional scale and I have by far the most from him. Herbie Hancock, his early work is a favorite and then Morgan. I need to push more into other labels, too easy to be swallowed up by Blue Note. Great list

Did you see that Fran Lebowitz doc from last year called Pretend It’s a City ?? It turns out Fran was pretty good friends with Charles Mingus in his later years....who knew? She tells some great Mingus stories to Spike Lee, along with other jazz musician tales I wouldn’t have expected.
Also, anyone here who’s into jazz, and hasn’t come across the film “A Great Day in Harlem” definitely should check it out - it’s been uploaded to TH-cam for a while & I believe is still here. It’s one of the all time best documentaries about musicians.
Thanks for never forgetting Nat King Cole in your jazz videos! People need to get those trio records and see what they’re missing.

Love Miles but he, ' 70's albums never clicked with me { apart from " We want Miles" ] . The 50,s and 60's were he,s best 2 decades especially the sublime " Kind of Blue " . Cannonball Adderley would have featured in my top 10 ," Live in San Francisco" and " Live in Chicago " being my two personal favourites . Art Blakeys" Free for all " is a stormer of an album with the band firing on all sixes and John Coltranes " My favourite things" is he,s best L.p. in my humble opinion . Monks " April in Paris Live" is another fave featuring the great Charlie Rouse and "Soul Station " by Hank Mobley , Chet Bakers " Smokin" , Mingus's " Blues and Roots" and lastly Jackie Mclean with" Let freedom ring ". I hit Keystone many many times. Saw Mikes there after Get Up With It came out. He had moved from blue to a ring purple...very intoxicating show. Ever hit Bach Dancing and Dynamite in Miramar? I filmed Dave Liebman there..It's in my channel.

Enjoyed your jazz collection and the background. I’ve been slowly getting into the jazz scene. I have a few of the usual suspects. Miles Davis etc. but I’ve been liking the Pittsburgh native Erroll Garner. I don’t see him out in the wild much but that’s the fun in collecting. I’ll keep searching. Cheers my friend.
Sextant. Amazing sound, so innovative. Don't hear people talk about this album so much. Definitive Afro- Futurism.
Check out Lee Morgan the Rajah, top flight hard bop with amazing chemistry between the players including drummer Billy Higgins and Cedar Walton on piano.

Quick little anecdote. My wife and I were having dinner at our boss's house one evening. Ella was singing over our chat and after dinner we listened to her properly. The next day, her death was announced to a saddened world. Turns out we were listening to her at the moment she passed. True story. Bless Ella: the greatest, just in front of 'Lady Day'.

I know you're a Sun Ra Fan Norman, do you know "Strange Celestial Rd"? It's a similar vibe to "Sextant", released by what was a very hip post-punk label, Y records, in 1980..

Bill Evans plays on Blues and the Abstract Truth but it is actually an Oliver Nelson record.
Will echo the remarks about Lush Life from John Coltrane, often overlooked for some of his more spiritual recordings which were some very serious recordings, but in the end Lush Life is his recording that I play most often of the many that I have.
My favorite Miles Davis record still is Milestones
I always wondered what direction the later Miles groups would have gone if Ron Carter had remained. Carter is supposed to have left because Miles wanted him to play electric but he wanted to keep playing stand-up bass. Two scenarios could have unfolded, Carter could have switched to electric or Miles could have let him continue playing stand-up. Either way, the history of jazz bass playing could have been very different indeed.

Django was the main influence of Glen Campbell and many others in the 50-60-70’s

I’ve rejected LPs before just to later hear them, say “what’s that” and then to revisit and GET it. Bitches Brew was one. Young Americans another…..a few others.
Man i dont like seeing cling film on my records, its like its not mine if i havent unwrapped it and you cant enjoy the artwork properly 😢 i also inherited some records and all the ones with shrink-wrap then film had clung to the artwork and creased, so if you pulled it off it would stick amd damage the cover. So sad.

rhe number of albums one has of s particular artist is not a great indicator of their greatness.
I wouldn't say Miles is my favourite either, but its quite easy to accumulate a large number if Miles albums due to the large spectrum of recordings he did. I must have 70+ Miles albums and yet I am not even remotely a completist and can name several jazz artists I prefer over him.

I have the Thelonious Monk Sam Records soundtrack album and the vinyl is so noisy. I must have been unlucky to get a bad copy, but the music is great. Oh well.
Yes please do one on CDs. I love your show but do not love vinyl.Crackles and pops were not recorded by the artists in the studio so I don’t believe I should have to hear them when listening.
