For me this is the most confusing part of the language (so far). I am learning from 5 sources, 1 teacher, 2 YT channels, 2 books. All of them are different. :) One book does not mention "mereka" just "dia-orang" which is a nonsense according my teacher, the other book shows 2 version of we "kita, kami" which is different in this video. Not to mention the loads of versions of "awak" like "engkau, encik, puan, tuan" and the others. I am sure I would mix them up.
maybe i can help, mereka = they dia-orang/diorang = they(informal and linguistically incorrect actually but malays used it anyway) kita = us(when talking among ur own group) kami = us(when talking to other people) awak = you engkau = you(sounds a bit harsh) encik = mr puan = mrs/maam tuan = sir
if it's sir=tuan you have to repeat sir all the time eg: Sir, do you need my help? (S)Tuan, tuan perlukan pertolongan saya?/ Tuan, tuan nak saya tolong? need=perlu needing=memerlukan(S-perlukan) help=tolong(root word) help(noun)=pertolongan want=hendak(S-nak) if it's older man, without position uncle=pak cik Uncle, do you know where is the place? Tertinggal satu kata ganti nama diri pertama jamak, iaitu "kami". Penggunaan kata ganti nama diri kedua tunggal, iaitu "awak" dan "engkau (kau) dianggap tidak sopan dan kurang adab joka digunakan dengan orang lebih tua atau berkedudukan. Lata ganti nama diri kedua tunggal "kamu" lebih sesuai dan sopan serta beradab dugunakan dalam perbyalan.
A Malay friend advised me not to use "I" and better to use "SAYA" she said if you use "I" ppl will think bad of you as you are not a "good girl" or a KL girl, I didn't understand what she said but it was funny😂😂 and another thing, I didn't get your point about the "Aku" between the different gender, can you explain it?
first of all, when you use the word 'I' in malay conversation; it depends on the acceptance of the place.Sometimes people in certain place find it so annoying; but that doesn't mean somebody is bad. Just they thought it's unacceptable; as if you are english wannabe :D it's all depends. in my place, even it's not KL; but people accept it, n there's nothing wrong to use 'I' in malay conversation. And about aku; some people find it harsh. some people not but if u speak with same gender using 'saya', but then when u speak with different gender you use 'aku'; that means you try to put barrier especially if somebody is nobody to you(same generation of people). sometimes, you u use 'aku' with them also because you trying to say you are just 'ok' with them; no flirtatious intention, to make them comfortable.But again, it's all depends on people :) i hope u understand my explanation. :)

"Kita" is including the interlocutor (we and you), "kami" is excluding the interlocutor (we without you).
