This song was EXTREMELY popular when it was released by Simon and Garfunkle. The song is what made them popular. Everyone was singing it as well as attending their concert performances.
Agreed. The other thing that is pretty hard for people nowadays to understand is how absolutely revolutionary it was for Mike Nichols to use their music in his film "The Graduate", helping the soundtrack to become a best seller. I did not see the movie until it was shown on network television, and the minute the song started underneath the opening credits (I confess, I miss opening credits in today's movies, they DID serve a purpose) I understood how it's bleak message helped to explain Benjamin's confusion and feeling of isolation.
Yeah, Jen, big miss on that one, not surprising, before your time, but this song was HUGE for YEARS after it first came out. Part of the soundtrack of my youth, the heartbreak of the late 60's, all that hope and promise dying in the cold harsh reality of the 70s. If that makes any sense to anyone, I'd be surprised...
I understand what you mean. I feel the music too. My mother was piano teacher and my sister was music major (pipe organ). My parents rented an organ in summer so my sister could practice while school was out. I was born late in life, so my sister was 17 when I was born. When I heard her practicing when I was 2-4 yo, I'd go sit on our wooden floor with my back against the organ. Mama would ask what I was doing and I'd simply say, "feeling music." I loved how the notes sent out different vibrations. Mama thought I was in my sister's way and try to make me leave and I'd cry. My sister let me stay .❤
He just released "Man Of Constant Sorrow". He plays guitar in his new one, kinda. It was B0 he dropped in Vahala Calling. It's always only Geoff. Peter Barber is an opera singer and part of the Bass Bang. Check out his how-to sing low tutorials and how to hurt yourself just enough to hit those low notes. He calls it light trama.
He always has to "trash" his voice to do the lowest subharmonics. It's a method of inducing light trauma, so that the lower notes are more accessible. Geoff knows enough about his instrument to not do anything that would permanently damage it. And it's 100% just him.
Agreed. I think Geoff's main complaint with Valhalla was those protracted sections which Layne gave him to be continually singing in the absolute bottom of his range struck him as being not particularly musical.
That must mean you haven't heard Blackbird, High and Dry, Shenandoah, Til Then. I lived through that time with Simon and Garfunkel and it was one of their best songs. Everyone loved it.
Hello, @Just Jen your simplicity and honesty make you transmit positive energy to the acapella groups and Geoff Castelluci. You know how to find the words that go well with your emotions. That's why I know I'm going to find your reactions. I'm not someone who listens to a lot of music. But when you react to VoicePlay or Geoff Castelluci, I'm there.
Love this cover also!! Your words hit me in the heart Jen about the gift of being able to "feel" the music. I do too!! So many of my friends that like music don't have that "gift" We are truly blessed.
About one year ago, you reacted to his version of "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" from "The Hobbit - An unexpected journey". About 10 days ago he released the sequel to that, "I see fire", from the second movie of the trilogy, "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug". I really think you'll LOVE it. 🙂 That said, I enjoyed your reaction. Your expressions told the whole story 🙂. Someone wrote, in response to another reaction, that: "The original was like "Should we worry about this?" Pentatonix was about "We can still fix this, if we work together" Disturbed was like "You were warned, didn't listen, and NOW YOU MUST PAY!" Geoff is like "I'm so, so sorry..." It makes a whole lot of sense to me. 🙂 See you next time!
Awesome reaction Jen. That is all Geoff singing. Last video of Geoff's is Man of Constant Sorrow. Voiceplay last video is Valhalla Calling. Music is also very therapeutic for me too. These guys brighten my days no matter my mood. Also helps me go to sleep with a clearer mind and more restful and deeper. Before Voiceplay and Geoff it took me longer to fall asleep. And then I was restless and woke often. I do that as well when I don't fall asleep listening to them or Geoff. My grandkids gave me sleep headphones and regular headphones for Christmas. And I use them both every single day.
I heard it described really well. The OG was the warning, Disturbed's version was the anger, PTX cover is the pleading and Geoff's version is the sadness and reflection afterwards. Every time I listen to this cover, I cry. It touches my soul, and I feel like a am seeing the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Absolutely amazing cover. Great reaction!!
I have loved this song since the first version by Simon and Garfunkel. There are so many covers out there, but Goeff managed to add something new. That's why I love his covers. The first few times I heard this cover, I had tears in my eyes. There aren't many songs that can do that for me.
This is such a masterpiece! 🤯He's amazing! And yes, it was all Geoff; well, with Jeff, Geoph, Goff and Darryl, but yes. Peter is a professional opera singer, and I love him! Check out the Bass Gang videos, with Tomi P., Bobby Bass and Marwan; they sound real good!
I have only seen a few of your reactions but I appreciate your genuineness. I saw your reaction with voice play and nothing else matters and loved your reaction. Your tattoos are gorgeous❤️🫂🤗
As others have said, Geoff didn't hurt his voice other than what he had to do intentionally and carefully to hit those notes. And you can blame Layne (VP's beatboxer) for that as he arranged Valhalla Calling. Geoff has said he doesn't think the super low notes are pleasing to listen to, especially like in Valhalla Calling where he's so deep for so long. You'll notice in his own songs while he goes deep he does much more sparingly usually. And yes, all he backing vocals are Geoff, and he does all the arranging and instrumentation too.
Hi:) Jen i love your reactions, i really like how honest you are in your videos and for that you got me subbed:) I would also like to say Geoff does all the layers by him selv, he is a god amoung singer:) Hope to see more from you in the future:)
When listening to Geoff Castelluecci sing the sound of silence, you can almost feel the the rumblings of female loins worldwide joined in a harmony of angelic sweet whispers of nothing in ones ear!
Geoff induces light trauma on his throat. Its nothing that permanently damages anything. Its just enough to have his vocals relax a little more than usual so he can hit low notes more easily
Jen Geoff stated during his episode of his channel, he was instructing on how to sing low bass notes even subharmonics notes without straining or hurting vocal cords. I guess he strained his vocal cords. I think that Geoff stopped singing for a while and use some remedies like one treats sore throat. I think that Geoff will be back.
I was a kid when Simon and Garfunkel did this song. I doubt that I heard it more than twenty or thirty times a day...wherever I went... in the car... and we didn't even have a radio... It was hugely popular.😳 Geoff's is even better!
The arrangement is phenomenal. Bet Paul Simon likes it! My bro spent years in Africa teaching science with the Peace Corps. Said when Paul Simon starts playing, Africans drop what they're doing and start dancing.
Hi Jen. Check out this band from Finland, Wow! Sounds crazy good. They play Powerful Neo-Classical Prog Metal, which I had no idea what it was, now I know! The link shows a recorded studio film
Hey, Tina setkic is back on TH-cam with her new band called Spin Twice just released their first official music video song what's wrong with me, request 😊
He knows enough about his voice not to hurt it. When he says hurt his voice he does it safely and it is not really hurting his voice just a phrase that is used
Start this song low when you sing it. Same with El Condor Pasa, a Peruvian classic folk song, Better wishful than dissful! Singing takes lots and lots of practice to develop muscles and muscle memory. Music takes the mind away... Musical literacy: circle of fifths. Carol Kaye videos highly recommended. She is a musical genius AND a fab teacher. Harmony gives me whole body pleasure. Great sound Jen!!!
Sorry Jen commented under wrong video, but you no what I mean, about the great days to come. Continue to push the boycotts hard and expose those with impure intentions when it comes to our children.
His voice sounds soooo much like Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies. Low bass but such a beautiful tone. I can feel the music through my body as well…. I call it ear Candy 🍭 but still his voice sounds so so much like Brad Roberts. Look up the song “Hmm Hmm Hmm” by Crash Test Dummies. Tell me if you agree?
Side note: I use music differently to heal. I’ve had a lot of trauma and abuse in my life but never a victim. Singing to the music is what I did. I would just sing and sing for hours. It was like releasing the pain through my voice. Really the only way I can explain it
I have been watching your shorts as well. Hope you are doing better. Check out Dan Vasc Sound of Silence and he recently dropped a killer version of Amazing Grace!
Thank you for the awesome content I do not know what genre of music you like but if you like some bass singing on the slightly heavier side of music check out Pete Steele from type o negative especially songs like love you to death and Nettie
Gotta ask, wherever did you get the idea that this wasn't a popular song when it was first released? I'm baffled that there's any such rumor circulating.
Sound of Silence wasn’t popular when it came out!!?? I believe 🎉😢you have been misinformed😢! I was a young adult when it came out. Simon. 😮 and Garfunkel where The Singers! This song was on every turntable! 😊😊😊😊😊 If you are interested there is a very interesting back story to this. Silence was a friend of one of them.

Yup. It was hugely successful when it first came out. Yet, the disturbed version is great and so is this.
Thank you. If you hadn't said this, I was going to.
Fourteen weeks on Billboard Hot 100, 2 weeks at number 1, ahead of the Beatles.
"Feeling music" is a special gift and so difficult to explain to people that don't "feel" music!
I understand what you mean. I feel the music too. My mother was piano teacher and my sister was music major (pipe organ). He also did a Bass cover of Radiohead’s High & Dry a while back. And he also played piano in that video too.
i was just gonna comment this lol.
He also played piano in his cover of Shenandoah.
As well as Blackbird and Till Then.
Geoff does al the layers himself.
That must mean you haven't heard Blackbird, High and Dry, Shenandoah, Til Then. I lived through that time with Simon and Garfunkel and it was one of their best songs. Everyone loved it.

I don't want this to end. You know you love a song when you become sad when it's ending...lol
Geoff always layers his own voice. It is all him on backing vocals in his channel all him all the background all the singing
About one year ago, you reacted to his version of "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" from "The Hobbit - An unexpected journey". The low note he hit in Valhalla Calling Me was a B-0 (B zero). All the voices in the piece are Geoff.
Awesome reaction Jen.

Bonjour.
Merci pour ce bijou. De tres loin la meilleure interprétation que j'ai jamais entendue.
Ces artistes sont connectés au divin.
Cordialement.
danke for this react... i had not heard it before and i am very grateful. danke darlin'

Geoff dropped to a B0 in the Valhalla video not D1 Great video reaction here cutie!!!
Spectacular reaction. Love you, sis.

Great reaction, Jen!!
I have only seen a few of your reactions but I appreciate your genuineness. I saw your reaction with voice play and nothing else matters and loved your reaction. Your tattoos are gorgeous❤️🫂🤗
He hit a b 0 in Valhalla calling
This one was special. Geoff is pretty phenomenal, but this one had some extra flair to it. Love your appreciation of the craft!
As others have said, Geoff didn't hurt his voice other than what he had to do intentionally and carefully to hit those notes. And you can blame Layne (VP's beatboxer) for that as he arranged Valhalla Calling.

I love Geoff he is my favorite. It is amazing on my surround
Bose all the way
I feel music very much. It's what keeps me going. I feel it so deep. This is amazing. Goose bumps everywhere.
My computer couldn't handle the awesomeness, lol.😅 Thanks for your reaction, I know what you mean when you say you feel the music.
When listening to Geoff Castelluecci sing the sound of silence, you can almost feel the the rumblings of female loins worldwide joined in a harmony of angelic sweet whispers of nothing in ones ear!
new here, but love your reaction, you are a lovely person
Yes he does all his own layering
Love that bass. Keep your posture! Watch his posture. Voice is the toughest instrument! Love you insight and silent gestures! Thanks for this!
I always love your reactions
Thank you 🙏 so much ❤😊
One of the greatest songs of all time.
Geoff induces light trauma on his throat. Its nothing that permanently damages anything. Its just enough to have his vocals relax a little more than usual so he can hit low notes more easily
Jen

As a real woman... Oh hell yes!
Thank you for smiling. Cheers me up.
best Bass Singer
He did Man of Constant Sorrow after this song, his voice sounded terrific so I don't think he hurt it too bad
I was a kid when Simon and Garfunkel did this song. I doubt that I heard it more than twenty or thirty times a day...wherever I went... in the car... and we didn't even have a radio... It was hugely popular.😳 Geoff's is even better!
Geoff, Tim and Avi... open air arenas only because all three have been known to shake the walls. That is what I would personally pay to see.
It is awesome! Love that "toxic masculinity" sound! Heck yeah!
disturb's cover of this song is amazing xx
The arrangement is phenomenal. Bet Paul Simon likes it!
My bro spent years in Africa teaching science with the Peace Corps. Said when Paul Simon starts playing, Africans drop what they're doing and start dancing.
He is like Tim from Home Free: he has a crazy range.
Hi Jen. Check out this band from Finland, Wow!

Hey, Tina setkic is back on TH-cam with her new band called Spin Twice just released their first official music video song what's wrong with me, request 😊
I think it will be awesome if Floor Jansen and this guy did a duet together, awesome 😎
Geoff is also an accomplished guitarist.
He knows enough about his voice not to hurt it. When he says hurt his voice he does it safely and it is not really hurting his voice just a phrase that is used
Hey Jen, Home Free just released their version of Delta Dawn
Nevermore did a metal cover of this song that I liked a lot.
I think Home Free are just as Phenomenal!!
I would love what you think of Les Claypool playing bass for ' My Name is Mud'???
Please react to Geoff singing " I See Fire"
He's good, however DISTURBED is still my FAVORITE version/cover. Still Simon & Garfunkel are just OG & deserve the RESPECT they earned!!
👍🎶🍵🍯

Great sound Jen!!!
I think you’re the only woman I’ve seen react to this video without swooning over his hair blowing in the breeze on that last verse!
Besides Geoff, the other great basses are Avi who sang with Pentatonic and Tim from Home Free.
You need to catch up on Geoff’s “I see Fire” … and VP’s “Creep” and “In the Air Tonight”. I know you’re busy … hang in there.
He did a B0 in Valhalla and yes he did hurt himself
Sorry Jen commented under wrong video, but you no what I mean, about the great days to come. Continue to push the boycotts hard and expose those with impure intentions when it comes to our children.
All the comments about this song so popular but for years you would here it in elevators and in stores playing for years and years.
Wait! Brad Roberts & Geoff co- singing. Would have us all 😱
Side note: I use music differently to heal. I’ve had a lot of trauma and abuse in my life but never a victim. Singing to the music is what I did. I would just sing and sing for hours. It was like releasing the pain through my voice. Really the only way I can explain it
Omg I remember that song!!!! That would be one sweet collab! I wish they’d do that song together!!!
@@JustJenRx right? I say we start a petition! :P
@@JustJenRx I was also going to mention Peter Steele from Type O Negative but he passed. RIP.
I have been watching your shorts as well. Hope you are doing better. Check out Dan Vasc Sound of Silence and he recently dropped a killer version of Amazing Grace!
Is Geoff not a GOD? A purely existential and spiritual experience.
Did she say that Sound of Silence wasn’t a hit when it came out??
Thank you for the awesome content I do not know what genre of music you like but if you like some bass singing on the slightly heavier side of music check out Pete Steele from type o negative especially songs like love you to death and Nettie

Yo look I think you should green screen “Dylan girl “.. Pink Floyd comfortably numb.. sing women style
The fact the first thing she says is wrong should tell ya something. Gorgeous? Yes. Always right? Nah.
No no no .. 🤦🏻♀️clown this man is what I’m saying
Not popular????
Have you been living under a rock??????
Wrong. Nice try...but I have heard better. S/G made shudder...very touching. Sorry, don't care for this
Sorry, this is an egotistical, non-emotional conver that is embarrassing.
