Eclipse giants may have got their start in Pathfinder (and Starfinder sort of), but they make for one heck of an addition to the worlds of Dungeons and Dragons. Join me today as we discuss the lore, ecology, and mechanics of the largest giant to ever see print in a monster book for either DnD or Pathfinder. Also I've converted it to 5E so you can terrorize your players. 👍

Also, what monster would you like to see show up next time?
Day 28 of Darklight request, but in the tristanspaulding timelime it's day 89
Hoard(er?) Dragons - undead dragons that possess & animate their own hoards. Seems ripe for a mechanic to steal & weaponize (sufficiently "rich"?) items from players
The Living Nebula - a creature that expanded my mind on what an Ooze can be
Linnorms - Lindworm relatives of Dragons with death curses
Maedar (male counterparts to medusas) or LeShay (immortal fey from a lost timeline) would be interesting.
guys whatever you do dont shame dungeon dad by mentioning he missed the day for the eclipse for this giant xD
Eh, I skipped it on purpose.
Wait, there was an eclipse! lol
@@DungeonDad gosh i hope thats a joke or you were just busy with other vids lol
100% I was planning to release this video a few weeks ago but stuff came up and the pale night video got so cumbersome that it delayed this release lol.
@@DungeonDad well there's always the alignment of the cicada broods for you to cover a monster for
"the seers are all just giant neards" well , technically they are gargantuan neards
You got me there
I was thinking more nerd giants
so like you ?
@@zgx2535 100% like me. Hence my sense of humor lol
The darkest day in the fire giant nation was the day of black sun.
This is the kind of stuff I want to see happen in giant warfare

Something something giant slaying boomerang
@@gratuitouslurking8610 WRITE THAT DOWN !!! - some guy at Wizards.
So, my first thought when I started this video was an eclipse chasing eclipse giant.
Fun fact: Eclipses actually happen nearly every single day. It's just that a lot of the time they happen where no one can see them, like over the ocean or something like that. There are people in the world that make a career out of flying all over and watching/taking photographs/video of eclipses as they happen. So, why wouldn't there be at least one eclipse giant doing just that? I imagine these things live super long lives and so, eventually, the eclipse giant might have a full on map of where an eclipse was happening every single day of the year when combined with the complex arithmetic that they go through to predict them under normal circumstance.
Just imagine this triathlon athlete of an eclipse giant that's constantly running/swimming/climbing from one location to the next to follow the eclipses as they happen so that they are constantly in touch with their True Selves. Imagine there's at least 2 of them, one for solar eclipses and one for lunar, and they meet up occasionally. Their findings and habits would probably be huge in the eclipse giant world and make them celebrities or folk heroes, and, should something major happen where the eclipse giants have to mobilize in great numbers for this purpose or that, they could defer to these two for precise knowledge of when and where an eclipse will happen so that the maximum number of eclipse giants are in touch with their True Selves as often as possible, making them extremely mobile but also extremely powerful.
My second thought when I got about midway into this video when we were talking about chucking rocks at people: Imagine a localized apocalypses caused by eclipse giants who are far, far, far away. Think about it: Some kingdom has some beef with these giants for whatever reason or another, but recently, there's not been a lot of tension. A lull in the fighting. Perhaps the kingdom thinks they've won the conflict. Then, one day, suddenly and out of nowhere, gigantic boulders start raining down on the castle and the capital city surrounding it and no one knows where it's coming from. They're literally flying from over the horizon and landing there, because, hundreds of miles away, the eclipse giants are sitting under an eclipse and throwing these boulders so far away that they might as well be orbitally bombarding you. There's nothing you can do to stop it. All you can do is wait and try to survive, and when it's all over in a couple of hours, there's so little left of the kingdom's capital that it's unrecognizable. An entirely new lost civilization has been made because the inhabitants wanted to screw around and find out with some eclipse giants.
I really like this monster, and my players are actually starting to fiddle around with giants in my campaign, so I'll be sure to fit these guys near the top of the Ordining - right under titans, hecatoncheires, and Chronos himself.
So, it's not really every day, but it is more often than he implied in the video.
Solar eclipses can only occur during the New Moon, and lunar eclipses can only occur during the full moon. This would limit it to about one of each per month. However, an eclipse can also only occur if the ecliptic lines up with the sun. The ecliptic is the plane that the Moon's orbit is in, and it is tilted relative to Earth's orbit. That limits it to roughly one every 6 months.
All that said, however, this applies specifically to real-world eclipses on Earth. Other real planets or fantasy universes could have very different rules.
Dungeon Dad: *releases new Giant*
Me: Oh boy, what weird technicality on the Ordening are we going to discuss today!
I feel attacked, but it is warranted.
@@DungeonDad No shade intended good sir. Just an amusing side effect of working with giants!
Hill, Stone, Frost, Fire, Cloud and Storm Giants: We adhere to a strict social caste hierarchy, ordained by our divine creator!
Literally every other giant: ....Nah, I'm good.
At this point I just want him to cover the older edition Titans, that sat above Storm Giants at the true peak of the Ordning in 2nd & 3rd edition. Tired of the line getting blurred between them & Empyreans, plus now the Tome of Beast Titans that are celestials..bring back the OG Giant Titans
Something something an eclipse would inherently entail shade something something
Eclipse Giant + Genius Loci is an absolutely incredible premise for a campaign. Oh. My. GOODNESS.
Holy crud....
I really wanna run a one shot where they have to stop an incredibly powerful eclipse giant spellcaster trying to perform a ritual to get the genius loci to eclipse the sun. Perhaps through domination magic.
Okay, but an Eclipse Giant that gets the powers of Ultimate Kars during an eclipse would be the scariest thing of all time.
What’s ultimate kars?
@@itscznben8728 Dungeon Dad used a clip from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure when he was talking about the 120ft darkness. The thing the guy was running from was Ultimate Kars
@@itscznben8728 his the villain of part 2 of Jojo. His powers that he can mimic any lifeform traits or ability separately.
And he kinda looks like the giant but leaner and more muscle.
Ultimate druid powers
Except it’s only when Kars passes between the sun and the planet and causes an eclipse
To put their scale into perspective, being 6'2'' makes you a tall human being. Next to an eclipse giant, you would be about as tall as its ankle bone. You are as big to them as a pet rat is to us. They cover a fast humanoid's entire movement speed in a single step.
I don’t think that’s right. 480 inches for the giant, as opposed to 74 inches for a human, that would mean the giant is only 6.5 times taller than you. Still really bloody big, but not that much
Tbh I always find the idea of fighting gargantuan creatures in a normal fight strange. A I don't see how even a two handed claymore could do much damage, especially if it can only reach the bottom quarter of a monster. Arrows and even magic damage would reach, but surely they would be severely restricted too.
@@Wintermute909 Okay. Stand around and let someone keep attacking you with a scalpel. See how fast those tiny cuts start to add up.
@@Wintermute909older editions usually gave the big guys some kinda damage resistance and or regeneration to account for size difference. As for the damage you deal? Could wave it as aiming for its weak points. The Achilles Tendon or close to surface level veins.
For reference humans are only slightly 2.5 times smaller then a giraffe .. at an average of six foot legs with 18 foot height.
I’d like to tell you all a story:
One morning, a chipper young man awakens. Today is a big day; his final exam for his degree is Astrophysics. He make sure to arrive early and when he begins his exam, he is shocked to find it a breeze. For the rest of the day, his is an invincible joy, amplified by the discovery that his favourite DND TH-camr, Dungeon Dad, has made a new video today. As he sits down to enjoy his dinner while watching the video, he learns it’s about a race of giant astrophysicists.
Truly, there are no coincidences.
Hey, congratulations!
Congrats brother, a giant achievement to be proud of!
Congratulations!
Congrats! I guess the delay worked out perfectly for you!
I'd like to imagine a moon giant and a sun giant doing a Dragon Ball-style fusion dance when they come across each other while having the time span of Escanor from Seven Deadly Sins while transformed as an Eclipse Giant.
That’s actually a really cool idea. Maybe that’s how their species originated?
@@DungeonDad That would make for a cool adventure hook. Two giants, one a sun, one a moon, both are obsessed with the idea of the true self, and they don't realize that the ritual they both are looking for is the steps for a fusion-dance polymorph 🤔🤔🤔
This giant has big Escanor vibes for sure
I can't get over the fact that the art in this video implies that Eclipse Giants are fat normally but get magically thin ones every decate for an evening or so ... that is trully terrifying indeed.
Would make sense that they use a tremendous amount of calories during the eclipses
Reminds me of that one family in Naruto that gain tremendous power by burning most of the calories in their body.
@brandons7931 Also, if they're literally sitting around waiting for it to happen to harness their true abilities, they're gonna be sedentary and put on weight.
Welcome to the monster midroll, where we monster your midrolls so your midrolls have monsters in em
I wish I could do a monster for every ad I run lol
@@DungeonDad would be fun, but very difficult, you do well keeping the inspiration flowing, thanks
Solar eclipses aren’t terribly rare, they just happen all over the world so we really can’t see all of them, so it might be interesting to see how they would act as a nomadic people, lunar eclipses are more common than solar eclipses, and it would also be interesting to play with the idea of the totality of the eclipse and how much or how little it empowers them, does the eclipse need to be a total solar eclipse, or can it be a partial eclipse to impart upon them a fraction of their true self?
How would the nature of eclipses and celestial phenomena impact their culture and politics? Would they wage wars among each other over an area that is somehow more likely to see more eclipses than another? How would a planet with multiple moons or suns play into their existence? Like those are very big questions.
I think for muitple moons the is power multiplied for every overlapping eclipse’s umbra it is in.
I've got a planet in my spelljammer game where there's a permanent eclipse in a certain area for reasons so I'm definitely having some eclipse giants living there
@@The_Sharktocrab that sounds rad. I would avoid that place if I lived on that planet, personally
02:37 #freedomunits baby
Imperial measurement is the only system made in god’s image.
@@DungeonDadYes, nothing in nature is base ten.
I’m totally putting a group of these guys in my spelljammer campaign. The twist?
The planet they’re on is perpetually locked into an eclipse. They’re always hyper powerful as long as they don’t leave.
Finally a giant that is actually gargantuan in size.
Eclipse Giant hires the party to planes hop to map out all the eclipse dates in those realms so he or she (giant) can maximize his or her's ability to create legendary items, etc.
5:04 So they have power to surpass a Pie Fiend, permanently "charming" anyone and anything who tastes it and winning the giant a truly loyal ally.
What a truly powerful and devious ability, that gets an Eclipse Giant a squad of (Epic) Dragon bodyguards, or the beginnings of a new empire, or maybe even the starting event for peace between Giants and Dragons🧐
Imma gonna use this for a character. I wanna make a guy with some long forgotten ancestry of these guys and something happened the day of his 18th birthday.
There was an eclipse and everyone in his town disappeared.
He doesn't remember what happened so he's looking for everyone while trying to figure out what happened.
I like this because the DM can do a bunch of different stuff with that.
Hope you don't mind, but I would very much like to steal this idea for my own character uses.
Yeesh this is a fascinating monster! Loved the plot hooks, and my dude, absolutely wonderful ad read xD and I will cherish that 'good designer' hat forever.
Thanks dude! And no worries, it should arrive in the mail any day now.
Dungeon Dad is single handedly responsible for getting me through my work day!
That preview drawing X) Literally ur-skek from "The dark crystal"
I feel like that was definitely an influence for the artists this week, and I am fully on board with that!
The little monster intro music makes me do a little dance every time.
During the duration of the eclipse they should be under the effects of the 9th level Foresight.
You know because they should.
They spend they time trying to foresee the eclipse, because during the eclipse they can foresee? huh? huh?
I feel like a group of giants collaborating with some other smart individuals to make that kind of stuff would be awesome
I’m just upset that it took me this long to realize I wasn’t already subscribed to dungeon dad 🤦🏾
Better late than never! lol, welcome to the channel (officially)
Oh boy same here
I was literally just cruising your older videos today! It's crazy to see how your style has evolved while retaining the best parts
Edit: gravitational lensing is an actual distortion of our view of the stars caused by massive objects whose gravitational field is so strong it bends light around it, similar to how black holes are black because no light escapes them. Giant stellar genius loci warlock patron?
Hey I appreciate it!
If you watch my videos from the first one to the current one, you’re basically just watching me how to use a camera/edit/write a script.
Starting out I knew literally nothing other than how to record audio due to my degree. It’s been a long and wild ride lol
@@DungeonDad all while managing to find and research some intriguing nooks and crannies of dnd lore and present them in an easy to digest way. I love your videos, and I feel like I'm constantly sending them to my dm and the rest of my party.
I was just literally making a homebrew fae giant for a dnd campaign
"In a group of eclipse giants, we have 1 individual who hated that they were so limited to their true potential. So he went on a quest, a quest for having that potential 100% of the time. A total, permanent, eclipse. If this individual, who is shunned by his people for making such a mockery of these cosmic events believing in more the old ways of respecting the natural way of having them, would succeed. Then the eclipse giant race would reach a treat level unheard of to the material plane."
Fun campaign idea maybe?
2:22 I seem to recall you having a video about significantly larger then gargantuan living constellations, but I forget the name.
Or was that someone else?
I didn't make a video on that (yet), but I did talk about for a sec in my Spirit Warrior video
@@DungeonDadi’ve been on my knees begging for the living constellations video since that dropped. put me out of my misery 🙏
That preview... is the request I made literal years ago FINALLY going to get a video! I'm so excited.
Your plot hook idea of them noticing an impending doom among the stars reminded me of your video on the Tzitzimitl, the giant skeletal aztec star gods that want to snuff out the sun. The idea of the eclipse giants noticing the stars going out one at a time over the course of millennia, with the frequency steadily increasing over the years, and fracturing into two sects upon realising these are approaching, one side welcoming it under the premise that the sun disappearing might by technicality count as an eternal eclipse for their purposes, where the other thinks this is a clearly terrible thing regardless of whether or not that technicality would turn out to be true and seeks to warn the other giants of the approaching threats. Given their size and average strength they might not even consider humanoids in general as being worth bringing into the loop aside from maybe a handful of exceptional and famous individuals, and the party only finds out through other weaker types of giant they're already dealing with who decide they were worth recruiting. From what I understand of the Giant-Dragon relationship they probably wouldn't want to let them know purely out of spite, but getting the dragons in on the prep as well could even be one of the objectives the party has to deal with, building just enough of a bridge for them to work together at least a little to keep the world from ending.
My first thought was "oh hi Atropos", you know, the Elder Evil in the shape of a rogue planet.
As a narrative suggestion, making the ability gained during the eclipse into a trait determined by the giant's family line might make for a very compelling plot thread. Perhaps the elixir of immortality is a secret that only a specific family of eclipse giants can divulge; therefore, that family may be being hunted and the party must protect the youngest member until the time of an eclipse. Lots of potential in a race with a precious surge in potential like this.
So glad you prevented the eclipse giants from taking over the world by delaying their arrival until after the eclipse was over. You're a genius!
I can't help but imagine an Eclipse Giant that is, in some way, like Kenshiro.
Like, for example, a giant that, for whatever reason, got marked with the big dipper against their will and then exiled from their community. And maybe their "true self" is simply being a peerless martial artist.
Go with "Arhat deva king fist" used by Devil Reverse (Rebirth?) for something which could give you reason to investigate said giant
Loving your idea. Stealing it. My apologies...
How I treat the ordaining is that Anam the all father is a multi sphere deity meaning that he is worshiped on various planets in the universe. The storm to hill ordaining in the one for the giants born to Othea. The sun and moon giants are part of a different sphere( adding eciplse to this list too now) born from a sky deity.
I love the idea of the frost giants or someone trying to make an eclipse happen and lock it in place to “make endless cold” only for the eclipse giant to step out of the eclipse as it becomes a portal.
How bout this: Eclipse, Sun and Moon Giants were on Toril, but their seers foresaw the King-Killer Star heading towards the planet and had visions of the impending Dracorage.
They decided to peace out to another realm for a few millenia and took the other cosmic giants with them. There could be legends among the giants that their cosmic kin would return to advise and settle disputes as they once did, bringing harmony and strength to the Ordening.
Maybe your spelljamming adventuring party is sent by a Storm Giant noble to investigate rumors of Eclipse Giants on another plane. Bringing them back to Toril would have a huge impact, and it's likely that dragons in particular would want to stop you. On the other hand, giants would want to help you, and it's possible this could kick off another conflict between dragons and giants...
Dude of the artwork is a beast. Absolutely amazing piece.
Imagine there is a pale night cult that goes to a giant thatcan answer all question during the eclipse and the mission is to protect the giant from interacting with the giant and the final battle is a raid against the cult
Dang, between prophecy and eternal eclipse plot, you'rlve already sussed my ideas! Oh well, here goes:
1. Maybe in your world, there is a ritual to make normal giants into celestial giants as a way to overthrow the Ordining entirely (including the most powerful Eclipse giant for the power hungry).
2. Maybe the genus loci communes via an emissary and assassinating them is your mission.
3. You need an eclipse giant to write one of the magic item manuals in time for an event.
Oh shit…I’m pretty sure you just gave me the engines running my entire campaign.
What an awesomely versatile creature!
I really appreciate the work you put into the intro and editing in general. Nice work.
I like the idea of an eclipse giant wanting to get off the planet/otherwise out of the range of an eclipse because their true self is something that horrifies them.
i loooooove the new style you have, and the little chia commercial at the end!!
I was currently in the process of writing a campaign centered around a deity that is trying to cause an eclipse. The campaign is loaded with monsters from this channel such as the mercury dragon, the pink dragon, the faceless stalker, the boneyard, the living wall, the dark sun giants, this one, the spirit warrior, and I just want to say, thank you for everything you've posted its been such great inspiration. Now my eclipse deity is going to have a section of eclipse giant worshipers MWAHHAHAHAHA
Me who’s BBEG is a moon dragon turned dracolich who lair is a small moon that’s nearly impossible to see: oh I could these!
Bigby’s book (while mid) introduced some powerful giant variants that master specific runes.
The eclipse giant is equivalent in power to a frost giant that has fully mastered the ice rune. A storm giant that has fully mastered the storm rune is cr 20. Just imagine what cr a runemaster eclipse giant might have
I actually enjoy your ad reads, very high praise comeing from me. Love the content!
this is the best thing ever, i’m literally writing a campaign about people trying to rebuild the sun and this is the best possible thing that could have ever happened to me
OH! A new Dungeon Dad video? My day has been made.~
The anti-phoenix would make an awesome addition to DND 😊
This fits a series of giant demigods I was putting off fleshing out. You better believe I'm inspired as hell.
Plot idea, eclipse giant wants to use Wish to make an eclipse eternal. time to stop it before the next eclipse grants it access to the spell!
The editing on this one was absolutely killer 🎉🎉🎉
Hey, I haven’t seen a ton of templates taken on by you, so it might be that you’re not interested, but the 3.5 MM3’s Void Mind was always one of my favorite bits of terrifyingly creepy. I always did have aspirations of slapping that on a war troll (also MM3) and sending a creature with regeneration that couldn’t be shut off after a party to force them to find some creative solution to the the relentless assailant.
I appreciate all your videos! They always spark ideas for how to bring interesting stuff to my games!
ngl monster of the midroll was a genius integration
0:17 Omg that jumper is _amazing_ !
Ok back to the video now
i was already thinking about the a pairing with the sun and moon giants and dragons but this... this is just the key. a lintch pin in a huge campaign i've been working on to link everything together... ty for completing this MotW.
1. Dude, you absolutely killed it with the plot hooks in this episode! Keep it up!
2. I feel like the seers would be insanely powerful simply due to their mathematical skills. Think about it; we use math and statistics in almost everything nowadays to predict the future. Heck, the algorithms that are so omnipresent nowadays are just a form of applied math and stats, YT, Ads, everything. If these guys are capable of mathematical predictions extending out into the century, or even millenia, timespan, then their presence alone, eclipse or no eclipse, could well disrupt society itself, as people race to use their mathematical prowess.
3. Jumping off of that, I think these guys would have interesting interactions with Moigno Maybe Seers are in a symbiotic relationship with Moigno, which feed off their true self's capacity for thought in return for providing them the ability to predict these eclipses? Heck, maybe that's why Eclipse giants' true selves are locked away; outside of eclipses, the Moignos are consuming all the power they generate to help them make these calculations. They could also have interactions with Sibyllic Guardians or Orange Seers, as comrades (or competitors?) in the business of predicting the future. Maybe there's even a whole underground trade for future predictions not based on magic, but on psionics and mathematics, since those are a lot harder to mess with?
4. That Ordning idea is really cool as well; maybe you could even have Eclipse Giants being the children of Sun and Moon Giants, and Seers are the exceptions among them. Maybe they could be like the Precogs in Minority Report, used to pre-emptively track events so that Giant society can counteract or leverage them? You could even have them be like a race of Hari Seldons from Foundation, where groups of them go out into space, or even the multiverse, to prevent massive, civilization-collapsing events from occuring. As a corollary, maybe you could even have them act like the Ancients from Stargate, or the Chozo from Metroid, for all other giants, massive, unknowable beings who wandered the cosmos and seeded knowledge across the universe for Giants to find it. Tying it to another giant you covered, you could even have Eldritch Giants be obsessed with finding magic and secrets because of the power the Eclipse Giants had.
5. What if you had Eclipse Giants who were truly multiplanar? Maybe they could act like wayguides for spelljammers, using their knowledge of multiple planes' crystal spheres and their cosmological cycles to help predict when and where a particular Sphere will be located at a particular time. I feel like you could use this to maybe set them up to have a similar presence in the overall DND universe similar to Dune's Spacer Guild. Or, if you wanted to, maybe they're more like Shai-Hulud, massive, unknowable beings who, when eclipses come, bring down wrath and destruction, and leave behind artifacts that are so powerful as to rival Gods.
6. This is also perfect for a new setting I'm making; It's essentially a colony world from Faerun where Giants, Dragons, Mindflayers, and Gith, along with all their associated vassals, were 'beached' by a Phlogiston storm hundreds of thousands of years ago, and whose collective souls became the new Gods of this uninhabited world. I feel like these guys could work well as a template for an oracle deity, maybe even something like Odin in Norse Mythology.
I love your videos because I've thought for a long time that there's too many monsters available. Too many dragons, giants, or any variation of a particular monster that feels like someone was filling out a checklist that says "hey, we've got to have 40 original ___ monsters by next week," rather than someone having an idea that feels unique and interesting. I'll see a thumbnail, think "oh great, another one of those. What's next, Uranium 238 dragons?" (Although....) But then I watch the video and the idea is usually really cool, and it turns out I'm just feeling unimaginative. Between the explanations, the ideas of how it fits into a campaign or into an encounter, or the brainstorm of awesome plot hooks, these videos give me that creative spark. Your stuff is like an eclipse level of creative inspiration! I'd better write my ideas down before I leave the path of totality.
Sick. New dungeon dad video
"I CAST CRUSHING BOULDER OF FRIENDSHIP"
*Human ally, watching his new giant buddy huck a rock the size of a prize-winning pig at him:* "Whu-"
I’m running a dnd campaign for the last week of school next week and I’m so happy I stumbled upon this video this is my new favorite monster now
Great video as always. Just two thoughts:
1st: Eclipse giants look like a pretty great way to introduce 10th level spells as they would be very limited in when to cast them, so you could have them reside in flying castles chasing the next eclipse
2nd: These guys are made for Spelljammer. Imagine them being able to chase eclipses on any planet or living on a world with 17 moons.
The perfect analogy for this could be Superboy Prime as he joined the Yellow Lantern Corp. Every hero came at him.. but when day broke and sun hit him the fight was instantly GG
Absolutely loving the giant series! I hope you're getting enough rest, though. Your eyes look darker than usual. Love yourself as much as you love making your content. ♥
Welcome back to Monster of the Week, the only series I keep coming back to every week. Thanks Dad!
One idea I find kinda interesting with the seers is, what if there ISN'T supposed to be an eclipse but one nonetheless happens? Sure, your average eclipse giant might just look at it as a weird blessing, but to something that has spent his whole life researching one thing, seeing that one thing act completely out of left field has got to be... Troubling. Either in a, "all these squares make a circle" kinda way, or a "...Something is w r o n g . " way.
Your videos give me so many ideas. Thank you for all you do.
These animations are absolutely crazy. Great work
Absolutely loved the use of Beserk image at 18:09 💯🤘⚡️💥🫀
So this came just in time as I was making an empire centered on the moon with the Moon Dragons from your video leading an armada of soul charged lycans and soldiers sailing to all the worlds they can for conquest.
And now you so nicely give me ideas for a God emperor of this moon empire! Thank you!
Just had a eureka moment, a eclipse Giant named Waka who is a pro athlete, and fights with rocks..
I absolutely love the little animation at the start of every video
"It just stole your soul and turned you into a sentient canvas. Which is bad"
Thank you for that clarification, I wasn't sure how to feel about it
Eclipse Dad Giant breaks leg.
His: "Hey son want to play some catch with your old man"
Son who got a paper cut.
Him: "Sure Dad I would love to play catch with you"
Steve Lichman is awesome! Love seeing Dracula even if he does turn into a chocolate lab sometimes.
I just like to imagine a giant attempting to toss a healing stone and the catcher missing and just getting absolutely blasted by accident
An epic level spell to lock a moon into place in front of a star would be really cool. Normally it would have many bad consequences (plants dying, sunlight Underdark races and vampires being unleashed on the surface world) but it would also fully unlock the potential of the eclipse giants. I would have the warriors of their army gain level 20 barbarian rage and the benefits from all the barb subclasses at once. That would be terrifying. XD
10 seconds in: yes
Fun fact, the speed additional height grants for a walking creature is limited by gravity IRL.
At a certain point, the time it takes a foot to "fall" starts to approach the time gained from longer legs.
Moving feet down faster with muscles is only possible with bending joints in a way that prevents a walk/run motion and wastes net time.
Speed increases as the square root of height rather than linearly.
Thus, a creature ~6.5 times taller than a human only moves ~2.5 faster using standard bipedal motion.
It's counter-intuitive, but they hang in the air a long ass time with every step, delaying the time until they can use their legs to add more forward force.
I have so many ideas... Squee!
Top notch as always, Dad!
24:33 Bro just gave us the best Super Saiyan plot hook ever. These giants even have the Iconic gravity defying hair already conveniently built into the lore. lmao
Never caught one so early, always love these!
Thanks! and welcome to the pre-party!
It could be fun for Eclipse Giants to get different eclipse benefits on multi-moon worlds depending on which moon is eclipsing what.
Also, plot hook idea: an eclipse happens across a particular place or kingdom that completely catches the eclipse seers off guard.
I wanna be an Eclipse Giant when I grow up. Seriously though, I think you just introduced me to my new favorite monster class!
Bless the Dungeon Dad
I don’t know you, but I enjoy your videos periodically, and this one has concerned me enough to say: Please get sleep. The quality of your waking hours will be worth the “loss”. Thanks for everything you’ve added to my life so far!
I've always wanted to do a character raised by giants., and my first though for the Eclipse Giant is that they would be a FANTASTIC mentor or foster parent/family for a Circle of Stars Druid
Point of information: "genius loci" is Latin, therefore hard C (that letter is the Roman equivalent of the Greek letter Kappa, as the letter K wasn't part of the Roman alphabet until centuries after Latin became a dead language).
I really like this monster. It’s such a unique take on giants and it provides a giant type that is just unimaginably powerful even to high level players and could provide so many challenges for them. I also love stuff with cosmic starry vibes and this fits right in
SUCH a great video and a source for resource mining!
THREE CHEERS!
"Genus Loci rapidly approaching"
Me: Majora's Mask flashbacks
I've run a campaign with an Eclispe Giant who needed to be recruited by the party to take on a godlike entity during an eclipse.
So the party needed to help the giant realise its dreams before the eclipse so it wouldn't be tempted to do all the things it actually wanted to do during the next eclipse.
This could make world-building decisions so much more interesting! Simple flavour like putting more than one moon or sun could massively affect these giants and determine if they rule that world or not.
I love the idea of them launching extra rock satelites to create artificial eclipses
One other way to make things more complicated in your setting is adding more celestial bodies. If you're playing Spell Jammer, you could encounter an Eclipse Giant on a Plane with two Suns & Four Moons in a "Geocentric" orbit around it. Another example would be Eberon where the various Planes (or gateways to them at least) orbit around the Prime Material plane like Moons.
Yet another complexity is a Krynne Campaign with it's 3 Moons which grant their Wizard's Magic.
Giant with a power to wipe out a kingdom during an eclipse because of their power over death goes beyond control and you have to stop it?
Imprisonment spell to stop it from harming anyone. If said giant is willing to come back after the eclipse ends, cast Freedom to rescue it.
If said giant is causing wanton destruction anyway, no harm in leaving it there
If the players aren't leveled enough to use those spells, or don't have them, perhaps the aid of an NPC could be enlisted here
Imagine an eclipse giant healing you by hurling a rock at you.
Phaerimm please my DM loves those awful magic worms and everyone else needs to know their horror
