    A few notes:
    - I recognize my pronunciation of Khayal is probably a bit off. I 100% blame google for this as the only 2 pronunciation guides I found led me astray. Lesson learned
    - The initial genie warlock spells I had on the document were wrong. I misread the ability. I thought the pact gave you access to those spells as prepared spells, but in fact, it only expands the warlock spell list. The appropriate corrections have been made!
    - You look great today.

    The funny thing about them is that while not lying to each other is awfully convenient, it is also extremely realistic for a race of beings who lie deliberately rather than impulsively. After all, who is more likely to catch them in a lie than someone who both knows that they are liars and is their rival in such regards.
    Lie to everyone else because they are stupid and deserve it but never lie to ones own kind because they are wise enough to eventually catch you lying and prove it.

    • @TheFoxfiend
      @TheFoxfiend 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That's an interesting way of thinking about it. It implies that if there is, by some miracle, someone who has gained their trust then that person might actually not be lied to, at least not all the time.

    • @darkphilosopher8726
      @darkphilosopher8726 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@TheFoxfiend Given what they are, about the only way to do that would be if someone was extremely hard to successfully lie to or otherwise someone who they see to be as successful and talented a liar as themselves. Even then trust would be a bit too far removed from their deceitful nature so it would be something more like respect for a rival than anything else.

    • @brianholden5795

    I believe its name should be pronounced more like Kha’yal (you know, like Kha and yal are separate). It’s an Arabic word which mean many things like: imagination, fantasy, fiction, silhouette, shadow, illusion, etc….
    Emer I think should be Amir which means prince, and Malik is king as it said in the video.

    I really dig this and you know what there will now be a lantern of darkness (has a forever running darkness spell when opened) type of thing that holds one of these guys inside bound to grant a wish for every lie they have told, with like 1d4 wishes remaining and if those last wishes are fulfilled it releases them to do what ever it is they would want to do. This will be the prized item of either some powerful Liche, Shadow Dragon or King of the undead Country I have in my games (Karrnath in the world of Eberron I run). Also just want to say thank you for looking into this stuff and sharing it here as it has expanded on the roster of creatures I can pull from for my games in interesting ways.

But not "beholder-shaped armor, specifically for beholders to wear," it's a giant suit of humanoid plate armor that the beholder controls with its mind, and the beholder sits on top of it as the "head" of the armor. It seems both challenging to fight, and hilarious to look at, so I think it's right up your alley

However there is an inner portion of the city simply named "The Capital." Thanks to this video, I now have not only a fantastic basis on which to build my town, but I also know who is secretly running the show in The Capital. I will be using these creatures to form my shadow cabal, pun intended. They will be working for the leaders of both the Feywild and the Shadowfell, lying to everyone in the process. You missed one genie in your list so I guess there are 9 published genies. The ghul. Which are undead ghoul genies from 2nd edition and also pathfinder. They eat human corpses and absolutely hate other genies and work against them any chance they can get. They also cover themselves up to hide their appearance. Becoming undead often makes their form turn hideous and some take on animal like features like the hoofs and long ears of a donkey.

    If you want inspiration for the city's architecture besides M.C. Escher, consider looking at the game _NaissancE,_ or watching a walkthrough of it. My advice is to go into _NaissancE_ blind, don't let other people spoil your experience of it with their personal interpretations. It's not a difficult game unless you are navigationally-challenged.
    Also IIRC there are rules for quasi-elemental genasi associated with the (negative)×(elemental) planes in 2E _Planescape_ that might be relevant to your interests.

    Funnily enough I created something similar recently. We have a Warlock of the Genie, and her patron was captured by Auril and his guardian was a being made of shadow very similar to the Khayal here. Was a tonne of fun to fight! He summoned a maze to trap the party, and then used his incorporeal form to pass through the walls to strike at isolated party members. The one major change was that he was immune to attacks of opportunity so mobility was its true strength. Might need to have more similar beings appear later in the campaign and introduce the Khayal proper. Thank you!

    I kinda love the idea of a Khayal that is a traveling merchant that sells dubious, useless or cursed items at low prices. Perhaps they also run a black market. I also like the idea of one Showing up as an Attorney for someone, who manages to lie and or cheat to win the case. What if its a warlock contract vs some devil, or even asmodeus, and theres a few sessions of the most corrupt version of Pheonix Wright Ace Attorney.

    Awesome video! Gave me great inspiration for a small event in my own campaign.
    If you ever get around to it. The Drakainia from Pathfinder Monster Manual 4 page 76 practically writes its own adventure. However, I am curious what your take on it would be.

    Alright, I have a few monsters to recommend for monster of the week!
    First, consider the jahi, a type of incorporeal undead serpent from 3.0 monster manual 2, that drains victims of their charisma, but then wraps itself around the victim, allowing the target to borrow the jahi’s charisma. Essentially, it uses its victims as figureheads to create cults for its own nefarious purposes, keeping its mount in line by the continuous threat of abandoning it to its fate. Could be neat.
    Second, if you are up for getting into the really dark, how about the “hex dragon” from dragon magazine iss. 343? Though physically weaker than other dragons of its age, the hex dragon is a stronger magical opponent, its scales crawling with arcane sigils. A connoisseur of all things vile, with a poisonous breath, the hex dragon can strike those who wound it with a retributive curse, and it’s death throes unleash this same power on all present.
    Lastly, for a big challenge, how about the clockwork horrors? Mechanical invaders who will devour the planet at the whims of their leader. This one is large undertaking, as there are multiple types of clockwork horror, split primarily between the 3.0 monster manual 2, and dragon magazine iss. 350. For inspiration, I recommend the justice league animated series episode “dark heart.”

    Plot hook: Party is hired to find evidence of a lie committed by an unknown third party. Turns out this lie was performed by a Khayal, and the person hiring them wants to catch them in the lie to gain a wish. While an inquisitive party might learn of this, and steal the wish for themselves, should the party give the evidence away, they'll have to deal with the consequences of a wish granted by a Khayal, as I believe this kind of genie would be most inclined to grant a double edged wish. i.e. A wish for wealth may just transfer a dragons hoard to your location, while leaving the dealing with the dragon to the adventurers.

    I love the idea of the Onyx City having a courthouse and procedure, not as a way of punishing the guilty or to suppress crime, but just for liars to proudly show the plausibility of their claims, and for shaming liars whose assertions don’t hold water.
