What I expected from a CR 50 ancient black dracolich:
    - Pure evil
    - Cunning
    - Planning the end of the world
What I actually got from the most powerful entity in the entire Forgotten Realms:
    - Fucking loves magic
    - Wants to be left alone
    - Made multiple masterpieces of magic
    - Refuses to show off his incredible work because it's not ready yet
    - So dedicated to his craft that he doesn't care if it kills him
    - Takes time off sometimes to go out and enjoy good music from pretty bards

The fact that Daurgothoth will sometimes leave his lair *just* to go enjoy the company and songs of a beautiful woman is absolutely hilarious, but also gives him an insane amount of depth. This has happened so many times, that lone female bards are warned that the creeping doom might just be sitting down at their campfire. Though it doesn't say he harms them, or even really does anything but listen and converse. Which means, in all, he's still something that can be reasoned with. Which is insanely fascinating to think about.

I find it interesting that Daurgothoth seems to lack the typical flaws of a dragon. He's always calculating and knows when to flee. He wants to grow stronger (which in the world of D&D is more then fair). He is kinda lonely and likes to go out to listen to girls sing and does nothing to harm them. He doesn't really mess with anybody since he doesn't need to eat or hunt. He can even create his own test subjects. I like him. Could be a really cool dude to have a talk with... For example Daurgothoth is obviously this ominous looming threat that everyone leaves alone and I would imagine even amongst legendary dragons he’s somewhat of a legend, but he himself likely has his spies in the cult of the dragon monitoring the other dragon’s movements to make sure none of them pose a threat.
On the list of those he monitors (at least out of the chromatics) I might suspect the list goes something like this.
    1. Klauth (baby killers ain’t gonna kill his babies when he succeeds in having them, also enticing magic that he may want for himself)
    2. Tchazarr (powerful enough to potentially rival himself if he lets his guard down plus could interfere with Daurgothoth’s connections to the cult of the dragon not to mention being an actual demigod dragon and having some powerful artifacts)
    3. Imvaerno (the only other dragon of known whereabouts who can potentially rival him if he lets his guard down, his innate talent is quite troubling)
    4. Mauzzkyl Jaezred (his secrecy and stealth as well as his power is threatening however given his ties to an assassin organization perhaps keeping him on payroll or at least enough treasure to bribe him to walk away is the best defense.)
    5. Imyrith (her vast wealth of arcane knowledge and artifacts not only poses a threat but also intrigues him greatly, her work toward self preservation and creation almost seems to mirror his own and given as she already has two children he knows she’s the family type. Perhaps a courtship may be beneficial although must be approached tentatively.)
    6. Claugiliamatar (her cunning is infamous and enough to put her on his radar. Also female.)
    7. Arveturice (mostly interferes with humanoid populations and doesn’t seem interested in draconic conflict and is more preoccupied with her mourning and maintaining her territory but she’s still monitored for good measure. perhaps her loneliness could be exploited for mating.)
    8. Ashardalon (has not been seen for centuries, perhaps dead or perhaps plotting something big, whatever the case he must be ready for it.)

@@MrHarrystank You make good points, but I'm not entierly convinced. I still think he should be on par with say, Acererak and Tasha, who both got 27 INT. But to be fair, 23 INT is still insanely smart. Anything above 20 in any stat is super human. 18 INT is already genious intellect.

Have you ever considered making a collection of very powerful creatures in one book? We play very high level campaigns and use 2C Gaming's Epic character advancement and are always looking for the next big bad. Daurgothoth needs something from another plane, doesn't want to leave his lair and contracts the Epic PC's. Of course its a double cross in the end, but game on!

God frickin dang in. I have to buy Monster Classes Three, and I'm excited for the updates to the previous two. I've made a Ghost character for some Solo play, and in a game I've played a bronze dragon masquerading as a Kobold revolutionary with who also moonlights as a vigilante a-la batman, but as a Kobold, but as a dragon. Very fun work.
Also holy fuck Daurgothoth is stupid strong, AND he's got the backing of a god of magic who is maybe the most important god of the pantheon because each time her previous forms died the world ripped itself apart. Added that he's a dracolich and I really cant think of how players without the most convoluted and deus ex machina filled plan

He doesn't seem to have any evil intentions.
His goal seems to be just learning everything and creating more magic. He doesn't go out and attack cities, he has no plans to conquer the world or create undead armies to wipe out humanity.
He just loves all things magic and wants to perfect the ones already established, while creatining his own.
He enjoyed going out and listening to people (specifically women) play music, but while he is lonely (and a powerful dragon, so he could pretty much do whatever he wants and no one could stop him) he NEVER harms them.
He wants descendants, but is also aware that might not be a good thing for the world.
I have an undead/reanimated character who would LOVE to chill with the dragon.

I've used the Creeping doom in a one shot campaign and as a D&D story in one of my webcomics, where a group of players absolutely destroy him with extreme cheese tactics in addition to his weakened state after the spell plague got rid of Mordenkainen's disjunction and ruined his signature spell, which I'm shocked you didn't mention in this at all since you clearly weren't focused on the current Daurgothoth, and you did mention it previously. Gooood ol' Bonemelt. So, in his current state in 5e, he's at his current weakest point since so much of magic changed again, forcing him to have to redo a lot of work and even relearn spells that have changed.
Studying magic must be a real pain when people keep messing with or killing the person in charge of the weave.

What makes Daurgothoth so special is his ambition. Dragons often seem to have no higher goal than the acquisition of food and treasure. The Creeping Doom's constant attempts to improve his own nature makes him original and impressive.

That actually gives me an idea for a short game if you find yourself with only one player available for whatever reason. Just a lone wizard who's been trying to find this ancient dracolich, following his movements and interests, all to request to study under him. He initially isn't willing, but he could use another skeleton for his phylactory room, and offers his tutelage if the player can bring him another dragon skeleton. Cue an adventure looking for the burial sites of dragons, searching for a skeleton for this dracolich so you can learn at least a portion of his secrets. Why would you go to such lengths? Do you seek power to annihilate your enemies, or to protect the ones you love? Are you searching for the ability to gain wealth and influence in the world? Or are you just an avid learner, fascinated by all the nuances of spellcraft and determined to study whatever you can?

I'm not sure where I should send this to. but I will just write it here.
I have an idea for a hag Class. Instead of spell slots it uses a modified spell point system (found in DMG page 288-289) that works a bit like The Deva class's Holy Energy. instead of getting all the points back on a long rest, it gets very few points back again once a day. in return, it can get points back every time it ruins someone else's day, and either have a very high point cap or have none.
if you have plans to improve the Familiar class I have some suggestions for some sub-classes.
    1. and 2. there should be a Fiend subclass that focuses on debuffs, and a Celestial subclass that focuses on healing and protection.
    3. and 4. there should also be an Aberration subclass that focuses on Lovecraftian horror and Mindfuckery (effects such as charmed, frightened, Madness, Compulsion, Confusion, and other things that are playing with people's psyche), and an Undead subclass that focuses on lifesteal and a bit on debuffs.
    5. and 6. there should also be an Elemental subclass that focuses on Elemental protection and improving their ally's Elemental damage, and a Fey/Plant subclass (other than the Pixie) that focuses on Druidic magic.
    7. an Ooze and/or Construct subclass would be nice but I can't think of anything that those subclasses would focus on specifically.
