“Sit down, son. Mommy needs to talk to you.” Something I’m noticing, watching your videos, is how halting and inconstant Shinji’s forward progression is. If this show is, in at least one sense, a metaphor for growing up and accepting the hardships of life, it’s telling that Shinji has revelation after revelation, only to regress in a different but tangentially related way in connection to the previous struggle he went through. Kinda like what kids do every day! I see many kids in my line of work who take two steps forward, one step back, one step forward, two steps back, three steps forward. But it’s telling which of them commit to positive change, because with rare exception, even with full effort exerted, they all stumble. Two thoughts about the staging and structure of the show at this point. One, the confrontation Shinji has with his image of Gendo in the plug is his Act IV “recognition and reversal” moment. In Aristotle’s “Poetics,” he points to a moment in classical theater when a character recognizes an essential, incontrovertible truth, which is sometimes (but not always) followed by a role reversal, either in the intentions and actions of the protagonist, or in the perception by the protagonist of those around them. Shinji’s recognition of his repressed memories is the trigger. Gotta love how drama has universal connecting threads through space and time, whether it’s Hellenic Greece or 1990s Japan. Two, these introspective sequences in liminal space while curled up inside Unit 01 remind me a lot of Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty. He created a novel new definition of “theatre” as a deliberate, stirring act which activates our senses to the full, separate from the colloquial “let’s go see a show” definition. Likewise, he coined a new definition of “cruelty” as the agitation that stirs us to a transgressive stance against the status quo. Artaud achieved this performative space by assaulting the audience with sound and light and language, in a way that made the barrier between audience and stage disappear, and all participants had the opportunity to confront themselves, as individuals and as a collective. Pretty spot on for what Shinji goes through several times over the course of the show Excellent video, as always. I hope my long responses don’t come across as me “well, actually”ing your insights. Your videos are a take on the show I haven’t yet seen, and it stimulates some deep reflection, which I appreciate a lot. Also, was not expecting to see your animated butt today. Certainly got my attention, though.
My man, it is always such a joy to read your reflections and insights. Your words are a comfort I'd nearly forgotten about and deeply missed. Please keep "well, actually"ing me; I love it. Your point to the universal strands of narrative are spot on, and open up a whole discussion as to story and it's necessary inclusion in the human existence. I think the reason the Reflection and Reversal moment is especially so universal is because it's a critical point of decision, which is, of course, the backbone of all stories: consequence. As for Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty, I can't say much other than I'm excited to look into a concept I haven't heard of previously. A number of new narrative techniques are on the show's horizon, all of which I'm looking forward to investigating further. I hope my animated butt wasn't too distracting; rest assured, I'll be more mindful of poking into Eva cores in the future.
I can’t believe I never made the connection between Shinji recognizing the smell of his mom and Misato. It seems so so obvious in hindsight. It’s a small thing on its own, but stuff like this is one reason I love this series. Can’t wait for more!
This show is frustrating. Probably because of all the back and forth between progress and regression. How many times does Shinji have to be rebirthed already?! It sucks but I would be lying if I said it isn’t exactly how it goes in real life. So the answer to “how many times is he gonna have to be reborn” is however many times it takes. It’s actually rather comforting to know rebirth is something that gets to happen over and over again. It’s a bit of hope to hold onto in the darkest moments of life. Also I can see why this vid took a while to release. Being trapped in the Eva will do that to you. In seriousness, thank you for giving this series the time it deserves. From ME, with love.
Precisely. Reality isn't always as linear as we'd like, but that lends to the importance of victory once we triumph over our challenges. Also yes, the inside of the Eva's core is not as easy to escape as I'd expected. Will definitely be taking note of that.
The beach signifying the divide between Shinji's world and the real world makes even more sense when the sandbox scene occurs. No water, just sand, and Shinji pretending to be in the real world
@@timberw0lfstudios And I had never noticed the beach symbolism, ur interpretations really turn the gears in my head. Anyway, great to have u back, can't wait for the next one (take as much time as u need delivering these gems)
12:10 Shinji questioning the role of angels in his life likely foreshadows the arrival of Kaworu later on. What if he had an "enemy" whom he actually considered to be part of his "society"? (A polar opposite to his thoughts on Gendo). Great analysis, man, can't wait for the next act!
Ooooh, what a great thing to point out. You're totally right! I can see how this conceptual dip eventually leads to that struggle. Thank you so much for sharing, and for enjoying the video! I just finished audio editing the next video, and I can't wait to dive into Act V.
Shinji is not the only protagonist to question the logic of the war he's in, or if it's right to even question the system. I love protagonists who work like that. Who fight, but are also willing to discuss. I relate to them on a spiritual level.
Nice catch: "Yui is interacting directly with the viewers, a fourth-wall break usually reserved for comedy, instead twisted into an unurving display of awareness. We are going to look inside her, but not before she looks inside us."
Oh my goodness, thank you so incredibly much! I would never have gotten to where I am now without the support and encouragement of amazing viewers like yourself. Thank you for everything!
Rewatching this episode makes the ending episodes seem much more intentional than i was giving Anno credit for. He really must have been planning Human Instrumentality as the ending since this early on, which is already controversial as hell, especially considering the 9 million viewers per episode. But he was influenced a lot by Devilman, which had an insane apocalyptic ending as well. Great analysis as always. That massage scene is actually wildly explicit, especially the voice acting. Hearing the backstory of that is a hilarious factoid
Glad you enjoyed! Anno definitely knew what he was doing, at least broadly. I'm excited to look over the finale in detail and see exactly when pieces fell into place, but alas, that'll have to wait for another video. Until then, thank you so much for your support and feedback, I really appreciate it!

Great video as always, and it's nice to see you back in action! It's also fascinating how much more you have to talk about now in each individual episode, going from talking about entire acts in a video to each individual episode getting its own video even as Evangelion's animation seems to become more restrained. I guess that's the power of Evangelion, isn't it?
Yes indeed! It is remarkable how dense the show becomes, even in just technique. I wish I could cover it in larger chunks, but alas, a 30 minute edit takes up enough time as it is. Thank you so much for the feedback and support, it means a ton!
Thank you so much! I woke up early to watch this, and it was well worth it. I'll be watching for as long as you keep making videos, Evangelion or others!

Brother, as every video before, its a masterpiece of its own. You know, i would really understand that after finishing this project you would want to target something different, but i can dream! @@timberw0lfstudios I think people overlook the mother son dynamic between shinji and misato is because of the kiss in EOE but people forget misatos problems when it comes to show emotions in ways other then Sexual and that it was a last ditch effort to convince shinji I hope that you will cover it more thank you so much man ❤
Of course! I'm definitely excited to analyze Shinji and Misato's relationship even more as we near the end of this series. I'll do my best to cover it as well as I can. Thank you for all your support!
Considering the motherly identity of the Evas, to me the LCL/ocean seem a likely allegory of the amniotic fluid/the intrauterine fetal state. The beach symbolizes (re)birth. And so at the end of the series/film, Shinji is choosing to be born, i.e. deciding that life is worth living.
Welcome back and cool opening animation, haunting but cool nonetheless. I have to admit i when i whatched the series i never noticed that Shinji willingly distantiated himself from Gendo, the only thing i got was that he saw yui die(?) and repressed the memorys of the eva unit 1.
Thank you so much, and I'm glad you enjoyed! I also definitely missed Shinji's distancing from Gendo on my first watch; in fact, I might've even missed his revelation regarding his mother. I wasn't very in tune with the series then, which is part of the reason I enjoy producing these videos so much. I'm glad you're enjoying them as well!
@timberw0lfstudios yeah, i only noticed It in my third rewatch, and even them I wasn't sure, mainly because it is never outright spoken, you just have to interpret it yourself, which is crazy since it is a major revelation.
Recently finished watching the entire evanghelion series(the anime, end of evanghlion movie and the reboots that arent actually reboots) and jesus i love it. Bought the entire evanghlion manga series today cuz i heard it has some changes/another ending.Honestly i cant wait to start reading it...even tho most of the story is the same,i cant wait to see what changed exactly
I've heard great things about the Manga! Lots of clarification regarding the lore and transpiring events. I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of the franchise!
Sorry for repeating myself, it's just so others will see too. I thought I should tell you. Soon, I'll start writing a couple of fics surrounding "Evangelion" characters post-Third Impact. The story, is that after Instrumentality was broken, four of the angels (Almisael and Rei are merged in one in this scenario) were reborn, and besides offering themselves to help rebuild Earth, they travel along with Shinji and Asuka across the multiverse in order to heal spiritually. Asuka and Shinji's travels are focused around my versions of Marvel and DC universes. Rei and Kaworu focus themselves on "Star Wars". I might reference other "Evangelion" fics as parallel timelines in these fics, because they, along with the original show, are my inspiration to write this.

BABE WAKE UP TIMBERWOLF POSTED
This series is so amazing, so insightful and really just further deepens my love for Evangelion, please don't just stop at the show but analyze End of Evangelion too ! The second I had a moment to sit down and watch this I got straight on it because these are by far the best analysis pieces on Evangelion ever written never stop doing what you do !
Aww, thank you so much! You flatter me, honestly! I'm so glad you're enjoying this series, and rest assured I am planning on covering the End of Eva! It's been such a blast to produce this series, and I'm excited to release more soon. Thank you for your outstanding encouragement and support!

How have I never seen your content before now? Thank you algorithm!
Don't know, but glad you made it! Hope you enjoy!
I love you man. This content is genuinely the best evangelion content I've ever watched, and probably I ever will watch
You flatter me, honestly. Hopefully something even better comes along, but in the meantime I will happily produce the best that I can. Thank you so much!
Happy to see you back!
Happy to be back! Thank you for the warm welcome!
The way I look forward to these every time they come out
Glad to know these videos are worth looking forward to; I hope you enjoyed!
Glad you are back, missed this videos.
Glad to be back! Thank you for your patience and support; sorry I couldn't upload sooner!
Wonderful breakdown, as always. Thank you for sharing!
Of course; thank you for watching! I'm so glad you enjoyed!
Thank you so much! I woke up early to watch this, and it was well worth it. I'll be watching for as long as you keep making videos, Evangelion or others!
Aww thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Glad to hear it was worth the early rise. I'm excited to produce more as soon as possible, Evangelion and not; knowing both are eager to be received helps keep me going! Thank you for your incredible support!
You're back!! The next couple of episodes are my favorite, so I can't wait to watch you're deep dive on them.
I'm back! Thank you so much for your patience. The next episodes are my favorite as well, so I'm super excited to get into them!

Great video as always, keep up the good work! God bless
Aww thank you so much! Rest assured, I'll keep doing my best. God bless!
Yes!! I had to wait for after work so I could really pay attention to this episode! Another great video! I’m learning so much about Shinzo, myself and editing!
Aww I'm so glad! It's wonderful to know these videos are helping others appreciate the series and film in general even more. Thank you for your incredible feedback and support!

Thats okay, I didn't need to go to sleep. Great vid, thanks for the hard work!

TIMBERWOLF BACK LOVE
The king
Brother, as every video before, its a masterpiece of its own.
You know, i would really understand that after finishing this project you would want to target something different, but i can dream! I dream of the same formula for the movies(death, end of eva). I think that you could see such more details in them then any other creator or even person i know.
Having this wish released from within, i want to thank you once again so much for the incredible work delivered, episode after episode.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I've loved covering this series so far, and I'm excited to continue. I am planning on covering the End of Evangelion as well. After that? We'll see, but Evangelion content will definitely be around for a while.
I've never been this early before! WOOOO!
Woohoo! Now I feel extra bad for replying to your comment late; thank you for your continued support!
The opening of Evangelion spoiled me.
Spoilers. Spoilers everywhere.
The opening was so well done! As was the rest of the video of course but that opening was awesome.
Haha, thank you so much! Glad to know you enjoyed the opening, and the rest of the video!
Hope the series continues along the movie and the rebuilds!
Rest assured, I'm definitely planning on covering the End of Evangelion. Hopefully we get around to the Rebuilds one day as well!
Been waiting for a new ep! Just absolutely adore ur content and editing style- so much love for this channel 😚
Aww thank you so much! That means the world, honestly. I'm excited to continue creating!
This was wonderful.
Don't ever stop.
Aww thank you so much! Rest assured, I'll keep doing my best!
Well done again!!
Thank you so very much!
Dude, I loved EVERYTHING from this video! That intro animation was SICK!
Also, that detail of Yui watching US (in a visually horrible manner) through Unit 01 is mind-blowing!
God, Anno is such a visual genius!
God bless!
Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the intro, and the rest of the video!
That Yui detail is one of my favorites, and continues to unsettle me; glad you liked it! God bless!
Fire post per usual bro, keep up the good work 🙏❤️
Aww thank you so much; I'll keep doing my best!
He returns with an absolute banger?! Thanks for the horror show of pointing out Eva 01’s eye by the way 👁️
I’ve watched this show 6-7x and never noticed that before!
Aww, thank you so much! Glad you consider this one a banger!
The Eva eye is so creepy, isn't it? Definitely took me a few watches to notice that, and other details.
Another absolute banger
Aww thank you so much; glad you enjoyed!
This is my 100% favorite TH-cam “series”, worth a couple of re-watches.
Aww, thank you so much! Knowing others are so excited for these releases warms my heart and helps keep me going. I hope these videos continue to be worth the rewatch!
@@timberw0lfstudios Im ashamed to admit that I enjoy this more than the original anime 😂.
It’s like reading the book vs. watching the movie and having those “OMG it makes so much sense now!” moments.
If you ever sell this as a packaged set I’ll make sure to get one and be that annoying friend that invites people over to watch it 🫶
Aww, that means a lot! I'm not sure I could ever sell the series as a package given current copyright laws, but it's wonderful to know you'd support it in that case. Rest assured, there will be other merchandise available down the line for you to annoy friends with.
Great video as always.
Aww thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed!
Great work man thank you for this great episode i hope the next one comes out soon God bless ❤
I really want to see people talk about the mother sone relationship between shinji and misato so thank you for that too
Thank you so much; I'm so glad you enjoyed!
Shinji and Misato's mother-son dynamic is bizarrely overlooked, in my opinion, so I'm more than happy to touch on it! Rest assured, I'm working on the next video, and look forward to releasing it as soon as I can. God bless!
Great job!
Aww thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
I think that's a wonderful interpretation, especially given what we see of the LCL fluid.
Oh yeah!
omg the into animation I CANTTTT
Haha, glad you enjoyed it!
Was praying for 3rd impact, this will do.
3rd Impact later, I'm sure. Glad this could suffice in the meantime.
22:00 I didn't want to cry before going to bed...
welcome back!
Thank you so much; glad to be back!
Wake up babe! New TimberW0lf video just dropped ❤
Glad to know you're excited!
Love the intros
Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed! Thank you so much!
