That red NERV card isn't merely a hint of bloodshed to come, it's a hint that NERV itself is soaked in blood, and kind of like our final answer on who deleted Kaji: he's another casualty in a trail of ruined lives left behind in the wake of NERV's twisted ambitions. It's sort of a recurring theme, from those eerie shots of ships floating in a blood-red arctic sea, to the vats of LCL filling the bowels of NERV's headquarters - and the EVA plugsuits where the children almost literally drown in it every time an EVA is powered up to take action! And in that weird and subtly creepy blood-red NERV logo we see everywhere, with the slogan "God is in Heaven, and All is Right with the World!" I don't recall whether it was mentioned in any of these excellent analysis videos, and I'm not sure how common the knowledge is among viewers, but "NERV" is German for "nerve", and "SEELE" is German for "soul" - another bit of psychological trivia puzzle for fans to put together while analyzing the show!
Is it really NERV that's twisted? Considering it's just a child company of SEELE, who were the real twisted individuals, this show's equivalent to the Illuminati or Metal Gear Solid's The Patriots/Wiseman's Committee.
One thing I notice about this episode is that we never see Yui and Gendo Together. The closest interaction we witness is Yui speaking her last words over the radio while Gendo happens to be in the room listening. We know that they must have had some kind of interactions. After all, they had a kid together, but the audience is only to them as individuals. So, much like Fuyutsuki, we're all just left to wonder what she sees in him. What she means when she tells the professor that Gendo is really a sweet man, and that nobody really sees that. Since "nobody" incudes us.
There IS a scene with Gendo and Yue in a park wqith toddler Shinji. She's looking very affectionately at Shinji and he's looking very affectionately at her. There's also another scene after she gets pregnant and we have the famous "If it's a girl, Rei. If it's a boy, Shinji." It's curious that "shinji" can mean "belief, faith or hope", but Rei is written with katakana and doesn't have a meaning, as she's to become a clone of Yue. But in both scenes, Gendo and Yue speak in very affectionate tones to each other.
@@alexandresobreiramartins9461Rei's name being written in katakana is probably meant to allude to several different words that are pronounced the same, particularly 霊 (soul) and 零 (zero).
The report that is shown in Episode 21 has the main text appear to be what looks like a contemporary newspaper article about Gainax and the success it has been seeing since _Evangelion_ began release. I thought that was an interesting Easter egg.
I don't remember who pointed this out to me, but when Fuyutsuki and Yui are talking under the tree, we get some very male gaze shots of Yui's body, assumedly from Fuyutsuki's POV, similar to the male gaze shots we get in End of Eva just before Shinji chokes Asuka. We know from EoE that Fuyutsuki was also into Yui, but (and I haven't watched these episodes in a while) this is the hint in the series that already foreshadows it. Maybe there were more, but I cannot remember. But it must've also been a reason why Fuyutsuki followed Gendo into darkness, because of his infatuation with Yui. I love the idea that Shinji had already heard Kaji's message. It's a good headcanon. I keep loving all your in-depth findings; every episode is another list of layered ideas and incredible observations. Next time I feel like I should watch the episode before I watch your video and see if I can pick out things looking with a similar eye. And YES to a guide of the story video if you want to do it!
Thank you for all the incredible feedback! I think you're absolutely right that the "male gaze" shots of Yui from Fuyutsuki's perspective go a long way in illustrating his affection for her, which explain his cooperation with Instrumentality. By all means, please watch the episode before I cover it! I'd love to know what details you find, and where our notes differ. Thank you so much for all the support, I really appreciate it. And the call for a guide to the story is duly noted!
Oh god, we're in the endgame now. Episode 21 is by far my favourite episode, as well as probably the only one I fully 'understand' as I converted my obsession with it into reading every little factoid about it as possible. I'm unsurrpised that you brought up the whole 'Misato killed Kaji' oopsie since, well, everyone knows about it, but as always there were so many little details that blew my mind when you brought them up. My jaw literally dropped when you explained that Rei I's death was meant to be framed like a horror movie!
I'm so glad you were able to find new details to love in this analysis! We're most certainly in the endgame now, and the rest of this retrospective will be quite a challenge to cover. Thank you so much for your feedback and support, it means the world!
Aww thank you so much! Glad you've found the series so enthralling, and I'll be sure to see about producing the story guide. Thank you for your kinds words and encouragement!
I'm so glad to know I'm helping others appreciate this series even more. There's so much to love, and I'm glad these videos are proving to be insightful and enjoyable! Thank you so much for your support!
This was a nice surprise to start my day with! While there's still a lot to go with the remaining episodes of the television series, I hope this series continues into the theatrical releases including EoE and the Rebuild movies. Probably an overwhelming ask at this point, but I'd be fascinated to see your take on the changes to the story.
I hope he also covers Death & Rebirth, which takes place before End of Eva. Especially the ^2 version, which includes more footage. For those who have trouble piecing together all of the meanings and hidden meanings, Death & Rebirth will often take some quotes said by someone & play it over a more relevant scene from either before or later on that reveals what some of the hidden meanings are.
I'm so glad to hear that! I'll definitely be covering the End of Evangelion after the main series, and we'll about the Rebuilds (I haven't seen them yet, but once I do I'll decide on whether to cover them). I may touch on Death and Rebirth as well, if the demand is there. Very excited to get to all of this; thank you for your incredible support!
I'm so glad your back and this is the topic I have been waiting for you to discuss, many people find the og series' final set of episodes confusing but I find it philosophical and thought-provoking so much that I can't wait to rewatch it all again next year! (Hopefully the next episode won't take like 6 more months to come and see ya next time bud!) :3
So happy to be back and finally have this video out. Life is getting crazy and in the way, but covering this series remains a huge priority for me. Evangelion's finale is where all the juiciest meat lies, and I'm excited to really dive into the technique and uniqueness of it all. Currently ahead of schedule with the next video, so hopefully it doesn't take as long! Thank you for all the incredible kindness and support!
I came across this series because I thought the asuka episode was a character breakdown but once I saw that one I got hooked. You bring up lots of points I’d never thought of before in scenes I never really batted an eye to. Keep up the great work!
loved watching this video series the emotional roller coaster and all sad to see it end but relived at the same time thx you for the videos :edit didn't watch the full video before commenting made an ass of my self cant wait for the next video tho keep up the good work
Hey friend, no need to feel bad! I completely understand. On the bright side, there's more Eva on the way! Thank you for your continued support and feedback, it helps keep this going!
The UFO connections are well-known (also, Kaji was modeled on Colonel Foster, and the girl with the pink hair in the last 2 movies is wearing a wig straight out of moonbase). Speaking of Moonbase.. The other well-known live-action Gerry Anderson property shares a key date with Eva (Second Impact happens on Space 1999's "Breakaway Day"). There was a LONG gap before the release of the last 6 episodes, enough that the Japanese release had a fair-sized bit of EOE with the last tape. These were some GOOD tapes too, incredibly sharp, and REALLY expensive.. The fact that Gendo got himself "adopted" into Yui's family casts him as a bit of a social-climber, and her as coming from a rather rich and traditional family (one likely with a LOT of connections). Though the character is read as "Anchor" Ikari could also be read as "rage" which seems to fit his misspent youth. Fuyutsuki's role is further defined here as indirect "proof" of Ikari's purity of purpose. We see more of his background, we like him, yet HE trusts Gendo..
All exceptionally good points; thank you for sharing! I had totally missed that Second Impact occurs on "Breakaway Day;" thank you again for bringing that delightful detail to my attention. Gendo is definitely a social-climber, given his relationship with Yui, whose family was definitely wealthy and possibly even membered with SEELE. And the support from Fuyutsuki is well-noted.
So happy to get another of these videos. I long watched EVA, I've been both tempted to re-watch it, now far removed from a similar age as the pilots, and quite older than Misato, but also feel like that was a part of my past, and I'm not too keen on going back there, if that makes any sense at all. Watching these videos sort of scratch that itch for me. In any case, these videos are great and not only am I getting glimpses into stuff I missed, I'm also getting glimpses of conventions of animation and filmmaking that I was subconsciously aware of but never really knew for a fact. I recall being unnerved by Rei's exchange with Naoko, but only until this video's breakdown on how it mirrored a lot of horror film's set up did it click. Again, it's a recurring thing watching these breakdowns and I really appreciate it. I have also completely stolen the phrase "editing is the art of implication", and consistently refer to it when watching other content. I want to be clear on something, I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE REMAINING VIDEOS. Also, as someone who did suggest that the previous FX creation integration was a bit weird sometimes, I appreciate that the feedback was received and liked how you both walked into it and handled it as a whole. I'm more of a fan of the wild unit 01's color schemes, but that red Unit 02 backpack looks awesome.
I know exactly what you mean in not fully revisiting the franchise--it's a lot to dive back into a whole series. Glad these videos are managing to scratch that itch for you! Also very glad I've been able to articulate and convey some of the amazing filmmaking techniques others have used to construct such impeccable art. I know how much I enjoy having my eyes opened by other essayists, and I'm so glad to hear I've been able to provide a similar experience for you. I never could've imagined my words and phrases would be taken to heart by others and used to help digest other media. Knowing I've had such an impact is equal parts mind-boggling and heart-warming. Thank you so much for the support, for the incredible feedback which I'm always keen to hear, and for the continued encouragement. What I do wouldn't be possible without people like you.
Episode 21 is my absolute favorite episode of the entire show, being packed with so many things: finally seeing Yui for the first time, the past of Fuyutsuki, Gendou, Ritsuko and Naoko and Kaji's end. It's great to see someone finally talking in-depth about this episode and I've learned a lot more about then I used to. Thanks Jir0!
You're so welcome! It definitely is such a great piece of television; I'm glad you enjoyed the analysis so much! Thank you for your feedback and support, it means the world!
Thank you so incredibly much! So glad you enjoyed it. Your encouragement, excitement, and support mean the world and help keep me going. I'll keep doing my best!
I was so excited when I saw that a new episode was out. The last few episodes of Evangelion have always been my most favorite episodes in the series, but I understand why they can be confusing to people. I have always loved media where the creators make the viewers work to figure out the answers; that's why I never understood people who watched Eva just to say "I didn't understand the ending" while never making the effort to do research about the background events that happened prior to the series.
At 18:10, the symbolism of a mortal and flawed man trying to act as a savior - even if not of the world and only himself - is a Christian critique of how man cannot save others or himself since our attempts at creating peace, wholeness, and connection instigate apocalyptic conflict instead. Imitating Christ, as seen by his projection of the shadow of the cross onto a sin-ridden man, cannot be done separately from a true belief in him. This is a warning of how our technological - and especially psychological - power deceives us into grandiose delusions of self-created salvation that always results in conflict, division, and isolation from others. This mirrors the Greek and many other myths' themes of how by trying to overcome or transcend the precognitions and prophecies of our doom, we ensure it. Another great video. Thank you for it!
really nice touch, to directly explain the difficulty in discussing the final episode without assuming to tie into a discussion of the finale itself... good analysis here
...I had NO idea there was a theory claiming it had been Misato ! How dense can I be !? The adults in this are excellent characters, but REALLY suck as people. But that's what makes them so human, I guess.
I got the same impression that Misato might have deleted Kaji the first time I saw this show many years ago, but when re-watching it over the last couple years, I couldn't figure out how I came to that conclusions, it kind of seems obvious now that she didn't! This analysis cleared up my confusion by mentioning the difference in the original vs. the director's cut versions, which of course would be the difference between the first time I saw the show, and every time I've seen it since. I think an argument might still be made for a sort of symbolic guilt on poor Misato's part, though it's difficult really to blame her: the whole "hedgehog's dilemma" thing and all driving wedges into her relationship with Kaji, which seems like the sort of relationship that should have worked in a less messed-up world, but gets sabotaged by the inability of characters who seem to truly love each other to actually say so and really do so. Seems like the only reason that Kaji and Misato took the separate paths they did in the show - ultimately leading to lonely deaths for both characters - was their inability to overcome that dilemma, and I think an argument might be made that Misato, at least, blamed herself for what happened to Kaji! I don't think the audience was supposed to have taken that literally though, and thus the toned-down change for the director's cut....
There are many hidden details in the show! Like when Shinji was devastated after Rei II death, Misato came to his room and try to touch his hand. I later learnt that she was trying to have sex with Shinji to comfort him. According to a video I watched, Anno confirmed this ! My jaw just dropped! It was so disgusting! 🤮. Like Misato was That retarded!
I’ve seen this show 6 times and that idea went completely over my head until now. I like it though, even if it isn’t “true” it completely changes the context of several scenes from the episode.
The broadcast version heavily implies it... the mistranslation "where is he" followed by the next sequence of visual cues, and Misato acting sad before hearing the message all add up- but fixing the translation really changes this interpretation.

TIMBERWOLF JUST DROPPED On the topic, I just wanted to say thank you for this in-depth dissection of this series. I would love to hear more of your opinions and commentary on other franchises and media as well. You're growing to be a favorite of mine.
Incredible work like always, glad to see you're back! And YES to more Eva content after this series is over, maybe even coverage of the End of Evangelion? Cheers!
Thank you so much! Don't worry, my friend, an End of Evangelion analysis is definitely on the horizon. And after that, who knows! We'll see what fate has in store.
Honestly this whole series has been both fascinating and very insightful. Aspects of the technical production that I knew nothing about are connecting thing and people together in ways I hadn't seen before. And it's leaving me even more enraptured than before. And that's saying something considering I once paid several hundred dollars in the 10th grade to have someone translate the Red Cross Book for me to put on my Eva fan site back in 2002 lol. Wish that hadn't gotten lost >.< Also I just LOVE you voice. There is something about it that makes it calming while drawing focus.
Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad my voice comes across as calming--I think I'd be in big trouble if that wasn't the case. And thank you for your incredible compliments to the series. I've had so much fun learning about the techniques used, and I'm glad others are appreciating my breakdown of the show. Here's to hoping future episodes live up to the standard!
This was sooo good! I dont have a background in film so this is super fascinating/eye-opening for me, thank you for doing this series! ...and yes do the guide!!
You're so very welcome, and thank you! Without your support and feedback, I wouldn't be able to do any of this. Glad the series has been so insightful, and I'll see about getting the story guide produced!
I need to see more media with nuanced, yet broken adults with guardianship roles. Gotta depict Maria from "Silent Hill 2" correctly. She's actually harder to write than you'd think, when the subject is not James, but a kid from an old anime I'm sure she'd feel kinship towards, like Mary and Laura.
god, i love these videos; you point out little details and implications that i didn't even notice my first time watching. you have such a great grasp of cinematography and film analysis in general and it always makes these vids super interesting. keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this series! It’s honestly the best Evangelion deep dive that we’ve seen and it helped us loads with our research!! Keep it up 👏🏼😄🙌🏼
Heck yeah, a new Timberwolf video! This series has been amazing, looking forward to your commentary on Eva’s ending. I always found it interesting for the decision to focus completely on the characters, mostly Shinji, but a little bit of the others, too. The giant robots and angels, amazing as they are, were always a vehicle for exploring the characters and their various psychological problems and how they dealt with them. Will you be doing a video on End of Evangelion at some point after the end of this series?
Glad you're excited! You're totally right that the sci-fi aspects are just to probe different characters and their motivations--which, I think, is what makes great sci-fi. Concepts should convey human stories, not replace them. Will definitely be covering the End of Evangelion film at some point after the series, given how crucially it ties into the show. And from there, we'll see. Thank you for all the incredible support!
My goodness, man, find something better to live for. In all seriousness though, that means the world. So glad to know these videos are worth looking forward to. Thank you for your incredible feedback and encouragement!

Aww thank you so much! This was definitely one of my favorite intro sequences to edit. And don't worry about the tardy arrival; better late than never!
After your series ends I'll have to rewatch it! Also the original air is as interesting as the director's cut it's worth a watch, I'm glad you mentioned and included it!
Of course! I couldn't find actual OA footage for this video, unfortunately, but I'm still on the lookout. So many interesting details in both versions!
@@timberw0lfstudios I had found the whole OA on the internet archive one day, but when I looked for it yesterday, I couldn't find it again. I hope you find it because those next few episodes have a lot of differences between OR and DC
I personally feel like Episode 21 is one of my favourites of the series. The scene of Naoko killing Rei I has always stayed in my mind as one of the most unnerving moments of the show. Great job as always Mr. Timber! Also what music did you use in the background at the start of the video?
Love this series - glad to see it back and I look forward to the rest of it. Would love a video guide to the story - perhaps after this series is finished.
Thank you so much--and the desire for a story guide is noted! I may get on that once the retrospective is complete. Thank you for the feedback and support!
I remember only watching the EVA's fights against the angels the first time around. Eventually, I decided to watch the entire thing, and after this episode I was like "well that was a lot 💀". As always, great video! 💜
Such an incredible episode that just blows past what most anime ever reaches for. I remember being confused as hell watching the original airing version because of the direction and editing implicating Misato. Really does seem like she hunted him down lol
Aww thank you so much! Glad I can spread some appreciation for this wacky piece of media we all engage with. Thanks again for the encouragement and support, it means the world!
To be honest, i am beginning to get lost in this tarnished ocean of analysis and revelations, i didn't knew that a director's cut of these episodes even existed. Thanks for the amazing work and i'm looking forward for the next episode.
It's all just geometry and colours! Nothing special, right? This feels a bit like being on a guided tour in an art museum, looking at the likes of Rembrandt or Magritte. Interesting that you talk about the UFO reference but not the Odyssey in Space one, but there is time for that later I guess, Seele has yet to play most of its role. Just in my reading it is pretty central to EVA as a whole, that Monolith is so loaded with symbolism. And Episode 21 is quite the headscratcher, it took me the longest time to make sense of what happened to Naoko.
Many questions and not nearly enough answers. Very honored to have this retrospective likened to a guided art tour: my intention is only to share in the love of a series we all find fascinating, and spread knowledge with those willing to hear me out. The Monoliths seemed a little on the nose with the 2001 similarity, so I figured most viewers, like yourself, would pick up on it without my mention. Once again, thank you so much for your continued support and insightful feedback! I always appreciate and look forward to it.
The Monoliths are obvious, more so than other SF references, but why are they there? I won't go into my reading of 2001 and the reason its included in EVA, just that over time it has become fundamental to my interpretation of EVA. With how serious this series has been, at some point you will have to adress that aspect in more dept, i'm affraid. But regardless, keep up tge good work!
Also if the SDAT tracks are important, Shinji listening to track 26, titled "take care of yourself", that idea could be playing over and over in his mind and with Misato entering the apartment he could also want to take care of her. The problem is at the time both Shinji and Misato are wearing red and in their own ways pained by isolation.
5:55 *SMOL REI SPOTTED* I have some sort of Mandela effect. I could swear there was a shot of Ritsuko holding a gun in front of Kaji. I am actually in a bit of disbelief that none of the versions of this episode feature that. Anyways, excellent video as always! God bless.

@@timberw0lfstudios For god sakes, its pronounced 'Lawn-gin-us.' Thats how the characters say it, thats the only way its spoken.
The report that is shown in Episode 21 has the main text appear to be what looks like a contemporary newspaper article about Gainax and the success it has been seeing since _Evangelion_ began release.
I thought that was an interesting Easter egg.
Same thing happens in End.
@@timberw0lfstudios you obviously put in so much love and knowledge that it’s oozing all over! You deserve all the love you’re getting :D
Another excellent video. I love that detail about Naoko falling onto Balthasar. Looking forward to the next one!
Such a fascinating detail, isn't it? Glad you enjoyed the video; I'll do my best on the next one! Thank you for your encouragement and support!
I continue to be in awe of the quality of this series. I eagerly look forward to each episode!
Aww thank you so much; I hope future videos continue to exceed expectations!
These are the best videos analyzing Eva, thank you.
No, thank you! Without your continued support and encouragement, I wouldn't be able to do this. Thank you for everything!
I can't wait to see your EOE analysis !
Me neither; can't wait to cover it!
An Evangelion story video would be awesome! This is the best Evangelion video essay (series) I’ve seen so I’d love to see more of your work

Always good to see this in my subscriptions!
Always happy to know it ends up there!
this series is incredible dude thank you, i didn’t think it was possible to love this show anymore yet that changes every time you upload.
@@timberw0lfstudios No problem man, I got into the franchise last year and I'm loving this series so far! (See ya soon man!) :3
I came across this series because I thought the asuka episode was a character breakdown but once I saw that one I got hooked. You bring up lots of points I’d never thought of before in scenes I never really batted an eye to. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the Asuka video and found the others worthwhile. Very much appreciate your feedback and support; thank you!
loved watching this video series the emotional roller coaster and all sad to see it end but relived at the same time thx you for the videos
:edit didn't watch the full video before commenting made an ass of my self cant wait for the next video tho keep up the good work
Hey friend, no need to feel bad!

!!!!!!! Holy shit holy shit holy shit my favorite Eva channel is back!!
Never left, baby!
You damn well better cover End of Evangelion, especially one more final- I Need you!
Rest assured, End of Evangelion will be covered! All in due time.
27:40 Yes this is your confirmation that I would like to see your take on a 'guide to EVA'
Definitely noted--thank you for the feedback!
really nice touch, to directly explain the difficulty in discussing the final episode without assuming to tie into a discussion of the finale itself... good analysis here
Thank you so much! The finale is complicated for a number of reasons, and I wanted people prepared beforehand as we dive into the final act.
...I had NO idea there was a theory claiming it had been Misato !
@@JabamiLain I always believed it was Ritsuko lol there was this theory that it was someone he new well and was familiar with.

Wish that hadn't gotten lost >.<
Also I just LOVE you voice.

You're so very welcome, and thank you! Without your support and feedback, I wouldn't be able to do any of this. Glad the series has been so insightful, and I'll see about getting the story guide produced!
As much as the ending is hated I loved it and thought it was a very good ending for Shinji and the show. Also yay new video :)
Very excited to dive into the nuances of the finale and its impact. Glad you enjoyed this latest installation in the meantime!

Aww thank you so much! So glad this retrospective has helped and proved informative and enjoyable. I'll keep doing my best!
Ah sweet these are always good, more interesting than watching the show itself imo

Such an incredible episode that just blows past what most anime ever reaches for. I remember being confused as hell watching the original airing version because of the direction and editing implicating Misato. Really does seem like she hunted him down lol
Totally. I think we're all lucky that Anno gave us the Director's Cut to clear that up. Otherwise, talk about a complicated relationship lol.

Thank you for your incredible support, it means the world. I'll do my best to ensure the next episode lives up to expectations!
Very good point.
love these so much

I have some sort of Mandela effect. I could swear there was a shot of Ritsuko holding a gun in front of Kaji.
I am actually in a bit of disbelief that none of the versions of this episode feature that.
Anyways, excellent video as always! God bless.
