Aww thank you! I really appreciate it! If word keeps spreading and the community keeps growing, I'll be even more excited. Until then, I'm already so blessed to have such an incredible and supportive community. Thank you again!
I’ve been on both sides of the conversation Misato and Kaji have in the street. First time I saw it, I had to turn the TV off and be by myself for a while. It hurt my heart to hear Misato say the things I’ve felt about myself from time to time, and the things I’ve heard people I care about say regarding themselves. I’m not a psychologist, but I have a feeling we all, on some level, deal with self loathing to varying degrees of intensity. We’ve all doubted our intentions and motives, we’ve all done things we view as mistakes, and we all question whether we’re worthy of even a modicum of kindness. I think that’s when I realized Misato is my favorite character; she opens her heart and is willing to say the things most of us hide away. But additionally, she works the hardest to be better, given how much responsibility is on her shoulders. She rises to the demands of her situation. I find that inspiring. Also, I think you did a fine job analyzing the more abstract and esoteric elements of Rei’s stream of consciousness. Evangelion kinda goes out of its way not to explain itself clearly in several instances, and I think, in these dream sequences, a little subjective leeway is important. Rei talks about “a woman who does not bleed” at one point, which to me reads as a commentary on her perceived lack of complete humanity, implying she’s not a real girl in a fully physical sense. But I could be completely wrong. It could imply her status as a vessel for Lilith, progenitor of humanity, comparing herself to Mary. Or it could be one of a number of other interpretations. Long story short, after a while there’s no objectively correct answer. Within a certain framework, most interpretations are probably valid.
I absolutely agree with you. Misato and Shinji are aligned in their desires to become better people, whereas other characters fall short by trying to become happier people. I appreciate your take on my take on Rei's vision! It was really fun to parse out, and when I later did research on it and found most people had similar opinions, I figured I'm probably on the right track. As you said, Evangelion leaves a lot open to interpretation, in most cases because that which is unanswered usually isn't important, and the free-for-all for headcanon that the community has created has, I think, helped with Eva's longevity as a series. Most interpretations are valid. Thank you as always, Amadeus, for your continued support and feedback. I'm always delighted to see you've left a comment, and I sincerely appreciate your opinion on all of this. Hope you're doing well, and glad I could provide more to talk about!

Shinji associates all memories of his father with pain, even the good ones, because his father hurt him. Just like how I associate all Evangelion memories with pain, even the good ones, because the movie hurt me. :((((
Episode 13 was such a strange experience for me as a young teen, I remember thinking how boring it is if the evas aren’t doing anything, but halfway through the episode I got so invested and it felt like I couldn’t admit to myself that I loved it, and I definitely couldn’t explain WHY I loved it. It just came at such a strange time in my life where my interests were shifting and my ability to analyse shows was growing.
I remember exactly what it was like being at that stage in my own life. Next thing you know, you find yourself watching things you never thought you'd find interesting, and your horizons have expanded tenfold! I'm glad this episode occupied that point in your life; hopefully I was able to shed some light on why it proved to be so captivating for you.
A trippy dream sequence? Evangelion must be truly starting! Also a fun fact, Ep 26 was only written a few days before Ep 14 aired...yeah great planning on that one! Can't wait for the next part, this series is fantastic! I previously recommended ep 16 be done as a standalone episode, and while I do think that, I also think ep 17 and 18 need to be together, and likely also 19 given their flow/connectedness. Can't wait to see what's next!
Yes indeed! I'm excited to really dive into the nuances of this series. Next video is looking to be a stand alone focused on Episode 16, but we'll see what happens. Thank you for all the support and feedback, I really appreciate it!
Really excellent analysis as usual. I especially enjoyed your deconstruction of Rei's monologue in the sync test. Definitely one of the less clear philosophical segments, at least for me personally. I also find it interesting you didn't really touch on the nature of Asuka and Shinji's kiss, as I feel like it's pretty nuanced in terms of it being both Asuka seeking attention but moreso seeking a reaction (from the very unreactive) Shinji. In my opinion, she is looking for reciprocation in that kiss, waiting for him to wrap his arms around her or otherwise take initiative in the intimacy. When he rejects her by doing nothing, she is hurt and in turn must make a show of rejecting him as well with her exaggerated show of disgust. Either way, really looking forward to your analysis of the next acts, especially as we get more into the psychological torture area. Also, only halfway through? What about EoE and rebuilds? smh
Thank you so much! I really appreciate all the feedback and support. Rei's monologue was very fun to transcribe, and I'm glad you found it insightful! More than any video before, there were a ton of details that got cut for time, but we'll be returning to in the future when they become relevant again. Shinji and Asuka's kiss is definitely one of those scenes, and I'm excited to do a more thorough breakdown in the future when we take a closer look at their relationship. Thank you again for all the support! I'm looking forward to releasing more soon, and eventually getting into the End of Evangelion and Rebuild films.
Another possible brilliant detail, at 20:01- the floor pattern right next to Shinji’s bed- resembles an A.T Field. If this was intentional? At this moment where Shinji’s possible decision of finally connecting with his father? This show man…. Also thanks for the analysis video! I’ve been rewatching NGE recently and these brilliant look into the show has been an amazing guideline!!
I didn't catch the A.T. field pattern beforehand--I love it! Thank you for all the feedback and support, I really appreciate it! I'm glad these videos have proved to be valuable and insightful!
Aww thank you so much! You flatter me! I'm so glad you're enjoying it. It's been so much fun to produce this series thus far, and I'm so excited to release more soon, especially as we get into the real meat of the show. Thank you for all the support!
I always thought of the trippy, dreamlike, monologue sequences as something akin to a Shakespearean soliloquy. It’s sometimes unclear whether they are talking to themselves or to the audience
That's a very good point. Given the similar nature of Shinji's monologue in the finale, it may well be an audience address, but either way it's a fascinating departure from what we'd expect to see. Thank you for the support and feedback, I really appreciate it!
Absolutely brilliant. I was just rewatching the entire analysis series when this popped up, lucky me. As a fan of the ADV dub, I do bemoan you not using it for clips. Despite its flaws, it really just feels 'real' compared to the Netflix dub.
Perfect timing! I'm glad it worked out! My personal preference is the VSI dub, but as I'm watching through the ADV dub, I understand the appeal and nostalgia for so many. Maybe one of these days I'll do a video comparing the two...
15:57 we see this shot specifically when sachiel shot his arm beam into unit 1s head in episode 2 16:30 first time we see this is in episode 2 when we get our first glimpse of unit 0
So I've been following this series, pretty much, since the beginning. It is a delight every time one of these videos drops. Every analyzing Eva video leaves me excited for the next one. The anticipation waiting for the next in the series makes me want you to hurry up, but also, I want you to take your time and keep up the quality... So I guess I have conflicted feelings about it 😄. Anyway, keep up the good work! I really appreciate what you're doing.
Thank you so much! It's amazing to know something I'm producing has people excited for its release. I'm always looking for ways to streamline the creation process and get videos out sooner, and I'm so thankful for your patience and understanding as I aim for quality over quantity. Hopefully the next video releases soon! Thank you for all the encouragement and support, it's a true blessing, and I'm excited to keep going!
I'm late to comment but I love this series! Ritsuko is my favorite character and your analysis of her in episode 13 especially was great. Super excited to see what you have to say about her in episode 23 ^^
Aww thank you so much! So glad to know you're enjoying the series so far! Episode 13 was super fun to analyze, and I'm looking forward to covering her in the future, especially Episode 23 and beyond. There's still a lot to discuss!
Putting up with you? Your analysis and storytelling is excellent, it is a pleasure to watch and every episode you release in this series is a personal highlight in my daily grind.
Awwwww! You flatter me, friend, honestly. I'm so glad you've enjoyed the content so far. I've really enjoyed putting it together, and I'm excited to release more soon! Glad I could help brighten your day.
currently really struggling with familial relationships & dissatisfaction with a certain person and you gave me some insight i did not pick up on myself
Fantastic episode! Made me laugh quite a few times as well! Something interesting of personal note and this very much could be just me reading too much into things but to note something that could be interesting at 11:14 with the shot of Shinji's blood covered hand, the shot not being desaturated but shaded colder, the warm tones being absent can be viewed as "In the past" like a cold distant memory as to say the acknowledgement of the passage of time, or, my very personal interpretation is that due to the lack of Rei and the colder tones could show a sign of dissociation, like Rei doesn't either accept it was her blood or that the idea of her own pain is so common/foreign that she almost doesn't see it herself, literal and metaphorical. Like she didn't know what warmth was, until it was shown in the present. Just a fun thought I had about that scene in particular
I think you might be onto something. Most flashbacks are shaded red or orange, whereas the distinct cooler shades in this one might hint at Rei's feelings towards it, her innate inhumanness. I like it! Thank you for the feedback and support! I really appreciate it!
Definitely wouldn't be the first or only time that anything involving Rei was weirdly desaturated, come to think of it. On TVTropes, I noticed a comment from someone wondering why everyone seemed to have normal hair colour except Kowaru and Rei, and I guess I was a bit surprised that it wasn't as common knowledge as I supposed it to be that Rei is albino, "literally" colourless: the oddly whitish "blue" hair, red eyes, and extremely pale skin are pretty much a visual give away on that, which is curiously never actually referred to directly or indirectly by any of the characters in the show. Almost like maybe Rei isn't literally, visibly albino, but just sort of figuratively missing a layer of emotion or humanity that the characters no doubt feel instinctively,. but which we as viewers can only see through the visual short-hand of rendering her in unearthly, lifeless, colourless-ness. By default, anyway: the scenes where we see Rei blushing hit a little harder for the otherwise colourless, washed-out half-life of Rei's existence! "Waning", as the man said in connection to her in the video dedicated to Rei, and that's an interesting and fitting description, I think, as is Toji's idiosyncratic description of Rei's room moments before we see her blush as "Spartan" (lacking in decoration and luxury, austere, characterized by self-denial....) Kind of appropriate, I guess, for a character whose implied arc would normally be for Shinji to call down the moon to Earth, defrost her frozen heart, and breathe life, animation, and colour into her....
As for seeing Lilith for the first time, I recall going down a rabbit hole one time and "finding some answers". The mask is basically just a circle with a triangle and seven eyes. The eyes were easily enough connected to the seven seals of the Book of Revelations, the ones that are broken at the Apocalypse. The mask itself seems sort of molten and damaged, as the wax of a seal would be. This made sense to me so far, but what of the triangle? In alchemy (if there's Kabbalah, why not that), the basic symbols for the Elements are equidistant triangles; a plain triangle with its tip pointed downwards stands for Water. But what of water? For this I went to the oriental Five Elements, where Water is the Element with the most pronounced Yin properties - the Element of the Female Principle. So Lilith's mask says "Woman who starts the Apocalypse"? This might also tie in with our cast - Rei enjoying swimming and Asuka diving, while Asuka also attempts suicide in a tub, and Asuka learning of Misato's chest scar at the hot springs. Asuka being introduced at sea even. Except that water is like the most ubiquitous thing on the planet, and triangles are the simplest of all 2D shapes! Relevant or not, I had fun reading up on the odd bit of occult lore.
Super cool, and definitely worth considering! While I do take deep religious symbolism throughout the series with a grain of salt (given that many in Japan at the time of production weren't familiar with such religions as Christianity), I do think many interpretations are valid, intended or not. I've recently been reading up on Lilith's mask myself, and am discovering some cool theories that may or may not be relevant. Either way, fun to think about! Thank you for sharing!
This is a great series that has brought a new depth to evangelion that I did not think was possible before so thank you for your efforts. Please do End of Evangelion when the time comes!

12:39 To add to this, I think your point can be applied to the ultimate point of Evangelion. You can’t have a soul without allowing yourself to have a body first. It’s like that really cool scene in the final episode where Shinji is given a floor to walk on :000. The good parts of life cannot be enjoyed in a vacuum. They can only exist in conjunction with pain. You cannot shut out pain. You need both. Without pain, joy cannot exist. If you lack one, you lack anything. That’s what reality is. Pain and Joy. Giving up and dying denies yourself the possibility of joy, as does shutting yourself off from the world. It’s Joy AND Pain, or nothing at all. Never just joy, never just pain.
Precisely. One of humanity's greatest flaws is perceiving individualisms in isolation: everything is connected, usually in ways we can't trace or extrapolate.
Aww thank you so much! Hopefully this rendition stays untouched. If nothing else, now I have another version to release on Patreon or something (if I ever get Patreon). Thank you for the support through this mini crisis, I really appreciate it! I'm excited to release more soon!

Let's be real: the AIDS PSA has already been covered well enough. So I'm only going to cover the Rebuilds and the manga and the video games and the visual novels and the interviews and the artbooks and the
@@timberw0lfstudios You know lately I read NGA manga again and I started to look for some lore explanation. That's how I found your series :) I do like way you dissect scenes and explain their meaning - great job! Btw. after Diablo IV release I read some texts about ancient beliefs related to Lilith etc. And I though it might be some key to understand NGE better. But, it doesn't help too much 😅It seems, that NGE writers just took some themes from judaism-christianity and just used them freely for their own purposes 😁
12-15 was my favorite stretch of episodes. around that point, i was still on board with the evangelion-ness of it all. i actually predicted that Rei would be Shinji's sister in a way, but unnaturally. Plus some other stuff, like Naoko and Gendo's relationship. Not a secret twin. God, i need to rewatch this show. I actually havent seen EoE yet.
It's so solid, and rewatching the series constantly yields new details. I haven't seen End of Evangelion yet either: hopefully it's a good as everyone says!
I genuinely love these analysis videos! I can't get enough and I'll really impressed by the ease in which you show these amazing perspectives. PLEASE keep them coming ❤
It's baaaaack omg am so looking forward to this. For real, I've been meaning to say this. this videos really opened up the series for me, as much as I loved it before this pieces really enhance and add to the experience. Specially cause instead of just explaining symbolism from a psychology standpoint you go into framing and color choices and pace and everything that grabbed me about the show on the first place and just makes me love it all the more. Seriously, thank you sm for making this videos and taking the time to write such solid work
Aww! Thank YOU so much for all the amazing support and kind feedback! I'm so glad to know others are finding these videos enjoyable, valuable, and insightful. They've been a joy to produce, and I'm excited to release more soon!
Im so glad i found this series, its been a blast following it and its easily what i look forward to most on youtube. Ive seen many other evangelion break downs but i feel like they get so convolutade or frankly a little boring. This one however has me really invested since you focus on so many different aspects, have great editing and naration that feels very inspired and energetic. Keep up the amazing work and i cant wait to see your community blossom ❤
Aww thank you so much! I'm glad the videos have proved to be insightful and captivating. There's so much to cover, and I'm excited to circle back and discuss some of the details I've had to gloss over. Thank you so much for all the support and feedback, it means the world!
10:43 I can't believe I forgot she said that! This is great freshadowing and now I get why they added some details to her in some fics. This series is extremely helpful. I love it so much 21:00 Man, I gotta hit some revisions on Gendo's portrayal, because he's much less irredeemable than I remember him being before EoE. A&T just lost points in my mind 23:05 This scene sucks ass. Sorry, but it's true. Here we can see how the precarious position of creator snd storyline set up a big, rolling tumble that will eventually result in stuff like Arael. Still, that's this scene's fault, not the series' 24:28 but then again, if this had gone that way... maybe we wouldn't be talking about it today 27:00 Absolutely outstanding. 9/10, keep it up, dude
Thank you so much! I really appreciate all the support and feedback, and I'm glad you're enjoying the retrospective so far! Here's hoping the next one releases soon!
SHIT. I made a cool comparison video with all kinds of shots that mirror eachother and that have thematic value. And in the intro of this the goddamn kissing shots between Asuka and Shinji are a big one I completely overlooked :o absolutely wonderful to find yet more stones I hadn't overturned with this show :D Love love love your stuff!

DUUUDE! I came across that video for the first time back in May of this year and I've been thinking about it ever since. You did a phenomenal job! Definitely made connections I hadn't considered at the time. It's a pleasure to run into you; thank you so much for your support! I recently did a video on Hunter x Hunter which has similar vibes to it, but not quite the same. I also did a video detailing some references from the world of Gerry Anderson in Eva. And hopefully in the future something on Attack on Titan. One small detail about the "infinite Reis" scene is that only the first line is "Who am I?" all the subsequent lines are "What am I?". (Though I honestly don't blame anybody for missing that, I only noticed it on my 3rd or 4th time watching the episode)
0:12 "...becoming the lens through which the series perceives his personal identity". *Proceess to frame Gendo's fractured lenses* - Me: *Slow clapping intensifies*
I haven't seen the Rebuilds yet, but if they're half interesting as the show, I'm sure there will be plenty to cover! As it stands currently, I am planning on covering the films once I'm finished with this series.
hey Timber, great work as usual! i was curious as to how you layed out the acts or if they already existed somewhere? another is if there will be a series summary for the manga too, considering they have a somewhat different ending/plot layout. thanks for reading, have a great day/night!
Thank you so much! The Act layout I'm working off is my own (call it the TimberW0lf Act Layout or something), as I observed the series breaks down pretty cleanly into a 5 Act structure. I lay out the overall structure in most videos: I believe I explain it more in my "What Is Evangelion" video, so if you want more information, I recommend checking that one out! As for the Manga, I have yet to read it, and am not entirely sure as to how I'd cover it, but it is something I'm very interested in and will be looking into. Thank you again for all the support and feedback; I really appreciate it!
At 16:55 we see a shot from the POV of the berserk Eva in which we see Rei and also the techs trying to get hold of the situation. interestingly where Ritskuko should be is a woman with dark brown hair, like her mother.
"Family ? What's that ?", is the best way to describe that bond's role in this perverted universe. Remember that fanfic I told you about ? The one in which Asuka and Shinji get together because their kiss was different ? Rei becomes their pseudo-child of sorts. The fanfic explores the character dynamics more, as they begin to try and heal (Kaworu still seems skeptical, though, so I wouldn't put Third Impact off the table yet). It was really cute. If I had to criticize something about "Evangelion", it would be that. The lack of balance between characters and their arcs. Then again, they still left a mark on the audience, so something must have been done right.
I think Evangelion uses every character and their individual arcs to great effect, demonstrating the various aspects of human connection and the dynamic forms relationships can take. I'm interested in your opinion on the perceived imbalance; perhaps you could elaborate?
@@timberw0lfstudios for example Rei. We know she changes. But her character development is mostly set to the background. In the original show's ending, before the movie came out, only Shinji's arc was resolved, but the rest would have been left ambiguous if the movie hadn't come out. I get they didn't like each other, but it still would have been nice to see at least one episode in which both girls were forced to work without Shinji. Just to see how deep this relationship of theirs went.
That's a very interesting and good point. I think Rei's arc in particular is very unique because it concludes before the end of the series and is forced to continue against her will. Asuka I've always seen an example of tragedy. But I haven't analyzed the End of Evangelion yet so perhaps there's more in there I simply haven't noted yet.
@@runefaustblack "Advice and Trust". One warning, Asuka and Shinji are in their honeymoon phase of a relationship, so be prepared to both love and be frustrated at their happiness. Also, the story begins in media-res, so the actual start is chapter 2. It's very good, the only downside would be no Kawoshin, but I understand why it must not be. Besides, found two ways to cope.
They are indeed! Hence my disputing of the strike. I didn't want to wait 30 days for a response, however, so I decided to re-edit the video for everyone's sake. And luckily TH-cam accepted, so everyone is happy.

I didn't catch the A.T. field pattern beforehand--I love it!

wake up honey, timberwolf just dropped another act
I was going to sleep, but now sleep can wait
Hahaha, that means a lot! Hopefully it's worth the loss!

Still loving the idea of analyzing from the perspective of *the edit*. Fantastic series.
Thank you so much! I'm glad it's continued to be valuable to you!
15:57 we see this shot specifically when sachiel shot his arm beam into unit 1s head in episode 2
16:30 first time we see this is in episode 2 when we get our first glimpse of unit 0
Good catches!
Evangelion remains one of my very favorite animes of all time. Dense, complicated, and detailed storytelling at its best.
Absolutely. It's a series well deserving of attention.
"Waning", as the man said in connection to her in the video dedicated to Rei, and that's an interesting and fitting description, I think, as is Toji's idiosyncratic description of Rei's room moments before we see her blush as "Spartan" (lacking in decoration and luxury, austere, characterized by self-denial....)
Kind of appropriate, I guess, for a character whose implied arc would normally be for Shinji to call down the moon to Earth, defrost her frozen heart, and breathe life, animation, and colour into her....
another banger incoming let's actually GOOO
Thank youuu!
Congratulations, I am addicted. I crave more of this series.
Aww thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying it; I'm excited to release more soon!

The descriptions of each character in the last few seconds of the video are very insightful!

@@timberw0lfstudios You know lately I read NGA manga again and I started to look for some lore explanation. Btw. after Diablo IV release I read some texts about ancient beliefs related to Lilith etc. And I though it might be some key to understand NGE better. hey Timber, great work as usual! i was curious as to how you layed out the acts or if they already existed somewhere? another is if there will be a series summary for the manga too, considering they have a somewhat different ending/plot layout.
thanks for reading, have a great day/night!
Yeah, the Rock is great^^
Absolutely it is ^^
At 16:55 we see a shot from the POV of the berserk Eva in which we see Rei and also the techs trying to get hold of the situation. interestingly where Ritskuko should be is a woman with dark brown hair, like her mother.
Yes indeed! Very astute observation.
When are you going to come out with the next episode and if you are going to even
Don't tell anyone else, but next video should be out this weekend
When are audiences going to respect the time a creator needs and are they going to even

I seriously don't mind; I appreciate everyone's excitement and understanding with the process. It helps keep me accountable!
@@timberw0lfstudios when do you plan to end the series and to go to the rebuilds and then Maybe some of the good fan works
As it stands, I have a rough plan to finish the mainline series by March. After that, we'll see what happens.
Can you tell me the name of that fanfic?
@@runefaustblack "Advice and Trust". One warning, Asuka and Shinji are in their honeymoon phase of a relationship, so be prepared to both love and be frustrated at their happiness.
Also, the story begins in media-res, so the actual start is chapter 2.
It's very good, the only downside would be no Kawoshin, but I understand why it must not be. Besides, found two ways to cope.
I still don't understand why Khara would copyright strike this. I thought analysis, parody, and commentary were all fair game.
They are indeed! Hence my disputing of the strike. I didn't want to wait 30 days for a response, however, so I decided to re-edit the video for everyone's sake. And luckily TH-cam accepted, so everyone is happy.
I suggest that after you finish evangelion you go take look at some of Tomino's more philophic works like brain powered is good start.
