I always felt that the close up of the locked door handle during the infamous Hospital Scene at the beginning of *End of Evangelion* was a deliberate callback to the close up of the, presumably, locked door handle of the room that Asuka's dad and his lover were using for their affair. However, this time Asuka is inside the room with the person she desires but as a result of the behavior described in this video, she is unable to do anything about it leading to Shinji taking matters into his own hands; literally. I also really liked the puddle on the roof between Asuka and Shinji after the Arael attack. It goes back to Kaji's story of the wide river that's "deeper than any ocean" between men and women that prevents mutual understanding of one another. In reality, it was just a small puddle that either of them could easily cross. However, neither of them could take that simple step over the puddle leading to the further disintegration of what little relationship they had left.

This put me down a mental rabbit hole of how much the Second Impact would have disrupted international supply chains and food production. Makes me wonder if Misato's offer of a steak dinner to the kids after that mission was informed by her experiences from the post-Impact world where scarcity and famine would have been common for a time and helping them enjoy the benefits of a comparatively stable world. Oh wait this is an Evangelion meme thing Uhh Fanta hospital

When i watched evangelion, for me Asuka quickly passed from a "cool girl" to someone who really rubbed me the wrong way, between her almighty atitude and she bitching about anything Shingi or Rei does. Thankfully, the show did show she was messed up in the head like everyone else and needed help like shingi to overcome life's burdens... but she rejected any help, and we know what happened.

  • @shiddter

the whole thing around the 33 minute mark is weird because it doesn't really have as much to do with Shinji so much as yet another rejection. For her its worse than Kaji because she views Shinji as lesser. It's weird how this is always framed around how all of her character is about being "in love with Shinji". It's a crush and a blow to her ego. I'm really not a fan of a lot of these character analysis that just make Shinji the main driver of all the other characters motives, rather than a two-way interaction. It's inherently antithetical to what Eva tries to tell the audience.

At 22:05, I think I know what is written here. The middle character is a bit hard to read, but I think it says “itai”( イタイ), which means “it hurts” in Japanese, but it’s written in Katakana. For those who don’t know, Japanese has three ways of writing: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Think of it almost as the English equivalent of upper case, lower case, and cursive. In this case, katakana is usually used for words/names that aren’t natively Japanese or could also be used for emphasis. Since イタイ is natively Japanese word/phrase, my theory is that writing it in katakana is meant to express what Asuka is going through is extremely painful. I could be wrong, but that’s my theory.

TL;DR Accepting responsibility is a sign of maturity for both men and women alike. And though important, it is not the singular characteristic (requirement) of maturity. * note: using CAPS because there is no way to italicize. Timberwolf @19:55 you assert that accepting responsibility is "THE hallmark of manhood." I think this statement is problematic. The problem is twofold: the exclusion of gender and the implied singularity of the statement. I think accepting responsibility is a sign of maturity, not only in men but also in women. It's more accurate to say that accepting responsibility is a sign of ADULTHOOD. My thoughts are with the young people who may be listening to your videos who may very well be trying to figure out in their own lives what it means to be grown. This is after all an anime we're contemplating. And though its themes may be more mature in nature, the audience may still be quite young. The first time I watched Evangelion I was barely out of high school and there are bound to be people who watch it who are even younger. To the next point, I'm sure an argument can be made that accepting responsibility might be an important sign, or a hallmark of maturity. But saying its THE hallmark makes it sound like that's the only characteristic that matters. However, a case can also be made for conscientiousness, consideration, emotional intelligence, reliability, and independence. Just to name a few of the many things that indicate maturity. How would a grown person look if they can take on a job but lack in these other areas? Maybe they're self-absorbed all the time, like an adolescent. Maybe they harm those around them either purposefully or out of negligence. How mature does that look? What if they can't be trusted to complete a task and they always need supervision or support? Any of these scenarios can be reasonable basis for doubting a person's level of maturity. Now for the sake of fairness, I get how this lapse may not have been intentional. After all the topic of conversation is Shinji, a young man not a young woman. And in the context of Shinji's character arc, accepting responsibility carries a heavier weight with it because we know Shinji historically runs away from his problems. A simple fix might have been to say "SHINJI'S hallmark of manhood" instead of generalizing. But I digress. Thank you for your thoughts and your content. And thank you for helping me enjoy Evangelion even more than I already did.

7:14 Haven't seen the series in a long time, but I'm almost sure that the cutting of the defense budget is a plot point later in the series that ties to the invasion of Nerv by the JASDF. At this point in the series, I don't remember it being brought up

Yes indeed! The budget cutting becomes one of SEELE's go-to strategies to hamper NERV's operations, and it plays a pivotal role in the NERV invasion later. Kind of crazy to see to see hints of that as early as Episode 11.

really nice touch, to directly explain the difficulty in discussing the final episode without assuming to tie into a discussion of the finale itself... good analysis here

Thank you so much! The finale is complicated for a number of reasons, and I wanted people prepared beforehand as we dive into the final act.
