Thank you for taking my "yuck" comment out of context at 0:26 by omitting the second part of the comment that says "I wish these "budget boards" would just let you swap the switches out with gateron switches at least if they're gonna keep costs down. :/"
I never said anything about Cherry MX switches being the defacto switch; just that more budget boards should go for kailh/gaterons instead of _defaulting_ to Outemu because it's cheaper (outemu blues and skies ice v2 are the only outemus that are "worth it" if you're forced to go with outemu). I know just as well as you do that more exotic switches should be up for display in retail stores so they can actually try outemus/gaterons/zealios/holy pandas/Aristotles/alps/etc in person instead of just trusting the word of "redditors" who may see the switch as good for them but doesn't fit their personal preference. The keyboard world should not just be dominated by two manufacturers in retail stores. How you get the normies in the community is that you show off all the switches you can to them *in person* plain and simple, because we need this clicky clacky world to be a happier one and it doesn't start with taking people's comments out of context. :)

I've been using linear Cherry MX Blacks with my daily driver keyboard for about a year now. I find that from my own subjective point of view, when combined with their higher weighting and tall double shot spherical keycaps, they have a rather smooth sandy feel that enhances their tactility, rather than the "scratchiness" that others tend to describe of them.

To be fair, even Alps switches were originally made to be linear, and they just thought of adding the tactile or clicky leaf later. Doing so made clicky and tactile Alps unable to take backlight LEDs.

    • @Boyetto-san
      @Boyetto-san 5 ปีที่แล้ว +133

@@michael4196 Blacks are the original MX switch type, which is why you'll hear a lot of talk in some communities about vintage Blacks. Cherry later designed a notch in the slider to generate a tactile bump, and thats how we got Browns and Clears. In the case of Blues, they were originally designed not with clickiness in mind at all. The click jacket/sleeve that generates the sound was originally invented to produce hysteresis (having the reset point above the actuation point), which was a quality considered desirable for typists. That they generated a clicky sound was entirely incidental, and they just rolled with it.

The irony is that if you look at vintage stuff Cherry MX was...pretty mediocre compared to its contemporaries. But then rubber domes started to take over and most keyboard manufacturers started to focus on low cost more than anything. Therefore most switch manufacturers just abandoned the market entirely. They didn't see much room for profit. Cherry was about the only mechanical keyswitch maker to keep at it and they deserve some credit for that. Then when there was a big revival in interest in mechanical keyboards (larger due to the gaming market) Cherry became the de facto choice because they were the only people still making mechanical key switches in large quantities.
Honestly I've never liked Cherry switches. I mostly stuck to vintage boards until Kailh started doing some interesting stuff int he MX-compatible world. There are some other decent switches as well, like Zeal's stuff. But personally I actively avoid 'genuine Cherry' switches.

I think something similar to this happens a lot in the tech world. When it comes to audio, people seem to like beats, bose, skullcandy etc. But these brands are no different from Corsair, Razer or other gaming brands in the keyboard world. There are much better stuff for the price like stuff from Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Monoprice etc.
Cherry does make some pretty good switches. Their linears aren't all that bad although I think Gateron and Kailh pretty much caught up. MX Clears are actually a very unique switch and they are also pretty tactile. Retooled MX Blues are actually very tactile. Much more tactile than their older MX Blue variants. However most of their switches always have a better, and possibly cheaper alternative. Blues, albeit being pretty tactile, rattle like hell. Kailh clickbar switches beat them out.
Stock MX Blacks are just too heavy for their own good and mx reds too light. They are also scratchy stock. Gateron linears and kailh cream switches are smoother.
MX Clears are great switches but Zealios exist and I would say MOD switches are also better than MX Clears.
Their browns are just sad imo. There is pretty much no reason for anyone to get Cherry MX Browns over Gateron Brown or Kailh BOX Brown unless they are using vintage browns.
It's all a matter of perspective, as most people will consider cherry switches to be an upgrade from their non mechanical keyboards but considering how better value switches already exist, Cherry MX will probably slowly fade away from the competition as time goes by. Just like how people seem to think Beats are amazing headphones because of course, they will sound better than the $5 earbuds they generally tend to use. But for the price, there will be better options than the most popular stuff.
In the end, it is a win for the consumers as they will get better, and cheaper products due to the competition. I am hoping Cherry actually innovates something big and bring something incredible to the table, just like what Input club is doing with their Silo switches. The low profile switches are pretty unique, but they aren't remarkable and I would consider them to be already outclassed by the kailh low profile switches.
At some point, more and more switches from Kailh and Gateron will catch up to the general public and will be the norm.
On the other hand, there are even more premium switches like Alps and Buckling spring which are even better than the best MX based switches. However I wouldn't really blame people for not knowing much about these older switches. At this point comparing Cherry & its clones to Alps/IBM switches is the equivalent of comparing something like $200 audiophile headphones vs $2000 audiophile headphones.

      mathew chen For me:
Clicky: Kailh box white, box pale blue or box navy (lightest, medium, heavy). They have a difference in how heavy they feel, and a slightly different click mechanism
Tactile: zealpc zealios v2 67g, Kailh speed copper if you want something light with a satisfying bump and a short travel distance (great for light Typing and for gaming/spamming a single key)
Linear: gateron inks are my favorites hands down. Zealpc Tealios are really great. Gateron yellows are really smooth and are a little heavier than a gateron red/cherry red.
      Remember it’s all preference.
I find I like a noticeable tactile feedback, which is why I liked clicky switches most at first, and what got me interested in zealios and holy panda switches. MX mount switches are great because they're easy to build up and customize. You can get good caps for reasonable prices. There are a lot of options, in terms of how loud or tactile your 'board needs to be. Outemu switches are fine. A little stiffer, color for color, and that makes them feel a bit more tactile. Gaterons are smoother, but it's maybe a 10% difference. All the MX switches get dominated if you broaden out to include all the other possible switch types. If only inexpensive key caps were easy to acquire for ALPS mount switches...

My friend gave me a bunch of different switches to try out. I thought that for example every red would feel the same but to my surprise no. Not at all. I own a tesoro keyboard with the opti red switches so I'm gonna put that into the feeling comparison too: to my surprise the MX Red is the worst. When I press it down it's heavy compared to the others Maybe it's the build of the switch, it feels like the moving part is always touching the side of the casing and it's making it feel like it's scratching it, slowing it down. Or idk how to explain it. The silent red is the exact same just a bit better feel. The tesoro red is my fav so far, really nice, you can feel that you pushed the buttons but there's no big resistance. And for the smoothest one, the Gateron red. It's insanely smooth, actually too smooth for my liking. It sounds dumb, but I literally "can't feel" this switch. I play osu! and I can't play with the Gateron reds because I never know if I pressed the button enough or what. Really weird. The other thing that blew my mind was The MX Speed. I was like haha oke shorter actuation and bottom out cool but that won't make a big difference. But it actually does. And it's really big but to be fair you only gonna notice it if you play rhythm games or something where you need to faceroll on the keyboard real fast. In other cases I don't think it's worth it, especially if you're used to normal switches. The sorter bottom out is hecking weird, feels like I'm gonna break my finger because I want to press it deeper but it's already bottomed out.

That's pretty much the only good switch, also the vintage and the exclusive version of the black switch in a keyboard (that one that have the milky casing).

This is interesting, I had known that these mechanical keyboards are knowing as costly price keyboard (with mx cherry switches) but lately there are comes in cheap price too. I will try to focused on what type of switches they bring into these cheaper mechanical keyboard.

No they aren't. They are just made with good q&a. However their main disadvantage that they are having not very nice feel. And that's big disadvantage.
    For instance:
I bought anne pro 2 with gateron reds and one key is acting weirdly so I will replace it. But men the feel is so good that I am going to try resolder the switch XD When I bought mx speed ones they worked perfectly out of the bix. But outemu also worked perfectly out of the box XD but yeah : Cherry mx just has good Q&A

I used to use cherry mx blues but I got pulled in hard when I recently got gateron reds.. the switches are buttery smooth and typing is bliss on those..

    Zeal PC
    Gateron Ink

Massdrop is kaihua which is also kaihl. Razer is alright if you want to talk their Optomechanical switch (god they could do without that sharp ugly click though). Libra LK I would dare also mention.

I honestly prefer Gateron over Cherry. I have used the Gateron Optical Browns and the normal ones, and right now the normal Gateron Browns feel great to me.

Fr, people like Outemu more sometimes, and my experience with their blues were pretty bad. Luckily I had a cheap hotswap prebuilt, so the many switches that failed were easily replaced. Definitely like Kailh boxes better though. Would like to buy a bunch of gaterons once I'm bored to try them out.

i never tried Kailh personally but what i found on some computer shops in place nearby me, they feel almost the same. but the best smooth i tried so far is Gateron. but i never own any gaterons.
in the end, they are still mechanical and we still get the feel of them.

Never tried linear kailh, but the clicky ones are way better than Cherry/Outemu IMO
