  • I am building a huckster from the remains of a 1930 Ford Model A. We are going to build one loosely based on plans from Wagon Works. Our goal is to build a fully enclosed cab, and then a jump seat in the bed area.
    Part of the build requires us to completely restore the cowl. Now if you can imagine what the condition of a 91 year old part looks like with a poorly done restoration that body filler hides, well this is it. We fully removed the paint using KBS Coatings paint stripper to reveal just what was hidden from site. Be sure to watch the video and check out the link below. Thank you KBS Coatings for supplying the product for us to use and review!

    Your car looked pretty good in person. I never would have guessed it was so bad. You're making me nervous about buying a "restored ' car without tons of documentation. God bless. Tom

      Knowing what I know now, and all the fix and flips out there, I would never buy another Model A that's been "restored" without full documentation on what was done, how it was done, and by whom.

    Wow! And you were driving this! It looks like it was submerged in salt water for years!

      Looking back, it is pretty scary that I drove this in many aspects. I had several folks upset with me that I decided to build a huckster, but imagine the work involved fixing four doors that were in as much if not worse shape as just the cowl section. Who knows what I would have found in the actual body. The windshield was not actually secure in the front header because the wood was so rotted. I had to keep it closed just so that it would not fall off.

      @@kensmithgallery4432 Yeah, I had a '79 Pinto that I really liked. I put more miles on that car in one year than any other car I've owned (35k!). But time and weather (translation: Rust!) took its toll. It was too much body work for my capabilities. So I said bye-bye to the little car. Sniff sniff! Boo-hoo.
      (I still have the engine, tranny and rear axle!) (I hoard old mechanical parts; never know when you can find a use for them) (wanna 351 Cleveland? Gotta couple of blocks!) (Shh! Don't encourage me!)

    Alarming seeing this, so many of the Model A’s that might be on the road with this much damage. Wish you luck on your journey.

      I am actually quite surprised myself now that I have become more and more familiar with many of the barn fix and flips I have come to see and hear about.

    Oh my! God bless you. Just a bit of time ahead of you. Wish I lived closer in order to get in there and make it happen for you. Best of luck.

      I am working on it every moment I get. I want to be able to drive this to Old Car Festival 2024 in September. The goal is to make this road worthy by June. That gives me more than enough time to work out any bugs I need to. The cowl, windshield and doors with roll down windows will take the most amount of time. Still trying to locate a good set of rear coupe fenders. I may just have to go new.

      @@t16205 Thanks for watching! I have every intention on getting there. Need a solid good 3-4 days of nice weather to get the basic wood body box built. Getting my kiln dried white oak from a local supplier. I'll need a few days to cut and plain most of it. Body and paint is going to eat up some time. I should finish the rear brakes and shocks this week, so things are starting to take shape but again those are just rough estimates. Work and life events all fit into the mix as I am sure you are well aware.

    Have you considered getting a replacement cowl?

    • @kensmithgallery4432
      @kensmithgallery4432  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did. I looked for one but near me they were as bad if not worse. I have a friend close by with a metal brake. Ho looked at the cowl and said we can save it. So, I ordered the sheet metal and we will get it repaired.
