My favorite recommendation was the Khadi. The day after Christmas I go to London with my daughter and hope to visit Jackson’s.this Khadi is on my wish list.
Great suggestions, all of them, but if I really must choose one, maybe the Kuretake Gansai Tambi... I would like so badly to try them... btw, I loved your approach to the starter kit at first and then expand the selection. Thank you so much 💕
Cotman WC palette also jump started me, I don't get why people hates them, I think it's a pretty good set as a beginner and so portable! I live in Asia, don't sleep on Maries Masters WC (make sure get the masters version) they're dirt cheap here. I'm curious about Khadi papers now, but Baohong is cheaper here hmmm. Love the video, very detailed and informative!
Literally love that course from Domestika. The part where she has you go out into nature and use like branches and stuff as brushes!!!! I am a Domestika Plus member so I get so many courses for free and its just 9.99 a month! Highly recommend!
Thank you so much for watching! I think you're talking about a different course by Laura - this one : Illustrating Nature: A Creative Exploration (Laura McKendry) : bit.ly/48eCohu I didn't realise she had another course until another subscriber recommended it! This looks so fun and like a great addendum to the course I am currently doing: Watercolour Techniques for Beginners - Domestika Kaura McKendry Course: bit.ly/3REciz7 Thank you so much for the recommendations! xx
Thank you for posting this! Great ideas. I looked up the Holbein 6 watercolor set but it doesn’t seem to be for sale in the USA. Just the 12 tube set for around $60. I also have been really wanting to try the Khadi fat book but it too is not available in the USA. There are other khadi products but not the fat book and not for $15. I also really want to try the Roman Szmal paints because of your recommendation in all of your videos but they too are not available in the USA. I guess I need to hop over to England lol. I hope this doesn’t sound like complaining. It is more regret lol. I enjoy seeing your beautiful work and hearing your recommendations Finally, I did not see a link in the description to the similar travel brushes. I have really been looking for an inexpensive set that isn’t trash.

Love the video!! My favorites are the Neocolor II and the Inks I use both of these all the time. I have the Khadi sketchbook in my Amazon wish list. Want to try it. ❤😊
Thank you sooo much for your kind words Heather! I am so glad that you enjoyed this! The khadi fatbook (100 sheets, 100gsm) is different to the other Khadi Sketchbooks (usually 210gsm) - and I'd recommend checking Jackson's Art / CassArt / Google - as Amazon isn't usuallly the cheapest place to find it, especially if you're in the UK . Hope you love it as much as I do. xx
That Kuritake watercolor set, I assume it's Japanese, I don't see much of the hues of the color wheel in there but it's absolutely beautiful. Thank you for upload, pretty hair lady 😊😊
I’ve not really been an online course sort of person. Like somehow I just don’t follow through… but that Architectural Sketching with Watercolor and Ink by Alex Hillkurtz looks really interesting!
Thanks for sharing! Lol I tend to struggle with courses too... The course is really great but I think if you know the watercolour basics and struggle with courses, it may be worth skipping to his painting demonstration - that is fast paced, really interesting and really beneficial in highlighting how he breaks down scenes. Good luck, and welcome to the giveaway ;) x
You are not kidding about the FW Daler-Rowney, I bought a set and ended getting 1 watercolor one that granulates and the other set of pearlescent that was on sale for 16 dollars. I must say on the Holbein it really goes a long way. I bought the 18 set of watercolors and I put the left overs of the tubes into a ceramic pallet well six months later I am still trying to finish it. Excellent video and so true! Maria
I wish I could paint as often as you. The lighting in my home (a condo) is so dim no matter what I do. I do have a place I go a few times a week. I just got the rest of my Qor which I seem to be drawn to a year in to painting.😊
Oh man, how about a large ring light for filming? I’m actually using that for my table lamp right now 😅 It plugs into USB and depending on where you can them can be rather inexpensive.
Yeah I’m sad about the cardboard box too for the RS set. Gosh, so as you know I recently got a lot of RS paints and I have that exact set of the RS. AND I also recently got that exact same set of gansai tambi - I already had the other 12 color set previous from an Xmas gift exchange, and I didn’t want a big set (well actually I do want a big set but…) because they are huge and I don’t have that much space on my desk… So I went conservative and got the small set! I also have the set of 10 neocolors 2. Not yet bought the fw ink, I’ve been good! 😂 But damn, I now I feel like getting that starter set -,- Ahhh I did buy a royal talens sketchbook on my Europe trip earlier, have yet to try it. Also hurrah for baohong academy paper, so glad to have found that, and love how accessible they are for me :P
I was only using student grade materials and this month, for the first time I'm using Roman Szmal paints, Jackson's brush and Baohong paper. It was worth it!!!

Great ideas. I really would like to try the Roman Szmal paints. Have added that introductory set to my wishlist and am going to look it up to check the US price. Also going to check out your video on your Roman Szmal paints. Thanks for mentioning it!.
I love the Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours, they're not too expensive, but still nice quality, and the colours are great for the price-point. I have the Sketcher's Pocket Box, and exhanged the white pan for a Cotman Payne's Gray, which has seen a lot more use than the white ever would have. I would love to win access to "Illustrating Nature: A Creative Exploration" by Laura McKendry
Thank you for watching and sharing Mia! Switching out the white is a great idea and I really like the cotman paynes grey :D Thank you for sharing your course choice! It is a new one that I didn't know until I saw your comment. Good luck! xx
Yes! It is a great watercolour sketchbook for a good pricetag in the UK! Holbein acryla gouache are currently on sale on Jackson's btw... if you use my link and the discount code SCRUBS10 you'll get 10% off the sale price too! bit.ly/3rst4Uc
The Neocolor IIs are an amazing addition to any art desk! The course, “Illustrating Nature: A Creative Exploration” by Laura McKendry sounds like an amazing fit!
Thank you for these ideas. I also picked up some Domestika classes during their Black Friday sale. I have especially enjoyed Sarah Van Dongen's, Laura McKendry's, and Maru Goda's. So many good ideas.
Thank you so much for this. Many good ideas. For Domestika courses, I would be interested in learning more about gouache so Atmospheric Landscapes with Gouache
I’ve got that Kuretake set and the neo colour II on my wish list. I started out using the winsor & newton cotman paints and think they’re great quality for student grade and a good starter set for people wanting to try watercolour for the first time. I’ve not tried any courses on domestica yet but both of the ones you showed look really good. I want to start urban sketching next year but I also love doing loose more abstract paintings to just relax and enjoy playing with different colours
Thank you for watching! I agree - student grade paints are a great place to start. The two courses I mentioned are: Architectural Sketching with Watercolor and Ink by Alex Hillkurtz: bit.ly/3XnUb0w Watercolour Techniques for Beginners - Domestika Kaura McKendry Course: bit.ly/3REciz7 But Laura's course is quite a nice one to explore different watercolour techniques to apply to looser low pressure art - it is the reason I'm taking the course too. I haven't done any urban sketching courses yet though. Good luck on the giveaway if you decide to join! xx
The Kuretake set you showed would make an excellent gift. I got it on special and I love it. Another idea is the Rosa Gallery sets of watercolor. They are so affordable and creamy. And provides a little help to a Ukrainian company.
Lovely recommendations. Definitely agree on Kuretake 12 colours set they are beautifull. Had the 36 colour set and recently got the 12 color you showed. Really like Roman Szmal and that was on your video long time back swatching all of them. Not used Khadi paper yet but the the academy baohong or meeden paper is really great. I would love to do the 1st course you suggested creative watercolour Sketching by Laura McKendry on the Domestica. Thanks for your suggestions.
I love the Princeton aqua elite brushes. Got my first one free from Blicks. It was a gift for showing up to their special event years ago. 🥰 Thx for your videos!
I use my boyfriend's Skillshare account, I've done some fun classes on there. Watercolour is my favourite medium but I honestly couldn't tell you how long since I've painted.
Hey Lady Amalthea! I hope that you get the opportunity and inspiration to paint again soon! Nonetheless, I hope that you are well. Thank you for watching and sharing xx
I watched this video After I made my monthly art order, I only needed some refills and don't need more temptations 😂💖 not a suggestion but I noticed that royal talent are releasing their sketchbooks with new covers aand with white paper 👏🏼
This is great list of supplies to tempt us with :-) Do you have link for the Holbein watercolours? On Jacksons, they are outrageously expensive (12 half pans for 150 $ was the cheapest I found!)
@@SketchesnScrubs I am addicted to using it for line work on everything. Probably stuff that shouldn't have line work. Oops. I used it on my Mushroom Dude page.
Thanks so much. I’ve got my eye on the Khadi Fat book for starters. I’m slowly building a supply of acrylic inks, currently into Holbein’s Acryla Gouache and experimenting with the Neocolour II’s. I’ve got the professional W and N watercolour field set and they’re running out pretty quickly. I’ve recently seen that there are water based oil paints (???) by W and N at a not bad price and I’m curious to try them. Any thoughts on that? Would you ever paint on canvas?
Thanks so much for watching and as always being an MVP! You've got an impressive mixed media collection :D I haven't tried the watersoluble oils yet lol I hope to one day but at the moment I don't think I'd have the time or the patience to wait for oils to dry / cure lol. I do paint with acrylics on canvas from time to time ... if time allows :) xx
😨😨😨😨😨😨 that price difference is crazy! I had no idea. What are some popular good quality paint brands in Australia ? I love the set too lol for the same reason x
Thanks for doing another great giveaway! The Domestika course I would like to win is Creative Watercolor Sketching for Beginners, taught by Laura McEndry. I think that I could learn a lot in this course. Thanks for this opportunity.
Okay okay- Sennelier savoir faire gouache- good or no? Also curious about the recent WN cheap gouache. But I bought the Sennelier for the name I admit- but wasn't impressed with the 2 videos I found. But I love my Turner gouache.
Hey! I haven’t used Sennelier gouache /tempara. Winsor and Newton designer gouache is my current favourite - bit.ly/3EeMWSi Just linking it to make sure we’re talking about the same one 😂😂😂 I share all my colours and how I picked them here: th-cam.com/video/THb2NaUJD-w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fyIPMYaQ2E56brwh Other great gouache brands - Schmincke, Holbein Acryla gouache - Turner, Holbein Hope this helps ❤️
Maybe a silly question, but do roman szmal pans fit in those standard black watercolour tins you can get off amazon etc? I started getting a few roman szmals to sloowlly replace my cotmans, but they don't fit in any of my winsor and newton palettes! Oops. Thank you for enlightening me to this brand, I'm in love with how vibrant but affordable they are
Not a silly question at all, they fit inside the metal palettes. The ones I have in my travel set are RS inside a palette from Amazon. W&N half pans are a bit smaller than others - I think I show the difference in size in the Portable Painter classic review video xx
@@SketchesnScrubs ohh that's great to hear, thank you !! I'll go and check that video out. I was so excited when they arrived, then the absolute fear in my soul when they didn't fit my palette haha
You are welcome! I think it is because the winsor and newton half pans are smaller than standard half pans; not that the RS are bigger if that makes sense. Good luck x @@Finchwing
Love your honest opinion. I Love the Kuretake paint set and Baohong paper the most because they can easily be find on Amazon. I notice your coupon code doesn't work on Jackson. I also can't find the products you recommended on their website. Maybe because I am from USA?
I would love to do some courses at Domestica. The one that really got me interested is Atmospheric Landscapes in Watercolor A course by Christian Koivumaa.
While I like Japan's art supplies Gansai paint In general from everything I've seen Gansai painte from any compeny seem to be not lighfsst. I usually think lightfast obsession is overblown but Gansai seem to fade or outright disappear quick from tests I've seen.

I haven't tried the watersoluble oils yet lol I hope to one day but at the moment I don't think I'd have the time or the patience to wait for oils to dry / cure lol. I do paint with acrylics on canvas from time to time ... if time allows :) xx
The Winsor and Newton set were my first big girl watercolours. I still reach for it. Unfortunately, it costs $90 Australian dollars.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and good luck on the giveaway! xx

I've been wanting to try Roman Szmals and khadi paper for the longest but I have way to much watercolors and paper at the moment.
Lool I understand the sentiment! That being said, I hope you enjoy the supplies that you're currently using Aaliyah! And Merry Christmas x
Which black liner pen do you use make your swatchbook drawings? Thanks! I love your videos!!!
In this video it was a random gelly pen, no brand name I can see. Usually it’s a unipin fineliner or Pentel pointliner 0.2 /0.3 size ❤️
Winsor and Newton designer gouache is my current favourite -

Just linking it to make sure we’re talking about the same one 😂😂😂
I share all my colours and how I picked them here: th-cam.com/video/THb2NaUJD-w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fyIPMYaQ2E56brwh
Other great gouache brands - Schmincke, Holbein
Acryla gouache - Turner, Holbein
Hope this helps ❤️
@@SketchesnScrubs ohh thank god for that, great to know!! Thanks!
I am curious to hear your thoughts on Paul Rubens watercolors. Would you say they are an artist grade watercolor?
I think they are okay, nice and vibrant. I think Lindsay the Frugal crafter has a review xx
Happy new years SS!!!
Happy new year Lulabelle!!
Love your honest opinion. I Love the Kuretake paint set and Baohong paper the most because they can easily be find on Amazon. I notice your coupon code doesn't work on Jackson. I also can't find the products you recommended on their website. Maybe because I am from USA?
Thank you for watching Fay! Jackson’s discontinued my discount code (but I’m hopefully in the process of getting it back ) xx
@@SketchesnScrubs that's bad they did that! Hope they will give you back the discount 🙏🏻
Thank you ❤❤❤bravissima
Thank you x x
I would love to do some courses at Domestica. The one that really got me interested is Atmospheric Landscapes in Watercolor
A course by Christian Koivumaa.

That looks like a great course too! xx
While I like Japan's art supplies Gansai paint In general from everything I've seen Gansai painte from any compeny seem to be not lighfsst. I usually think lightfast obsession is overblown but Gansai seem to fade or outright disappear quick from tests I've seen.
That’s really interesting! Thank you for sharing x
Hi I’m new to painting I do adult colouring in I have the whole neo Color’s 2 set winsor and newton paints I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 would love to learn to paint with watercolour
Thank you for sharing Kylie! Let me know if you find a course / the name of the course that you like if you'd like to enter the giveaway. Good luck
Laura's course may be a good place to start if you want to do loose play with watercolour: 🎨 Creative Watercolour Sketching by Laura McKendry: bit.ly/3REciz7
For a more indepth look at watercolour and more traditional techniques you may enjoy Alex Hilkurtz course... but there are a lot of great courses to choose from. Excited to see what you'll find x x
I would love to do the course Creative Watercolor Sketching for Beginners by Laura McKendry. Thank you for a great video share.
You are so welcome! Good luck Juanita ❤️
Hi sketches . Is your code on Jackson’s still valid? I tried but it doesn’t work 😢
If you’re logged in and have never used it before it should work! Though it is ending in a few days x
I cant find any silver brush brushes below £15?
Oh no! It’s jumped up in price on Amazon from when I bought it , hopefully it drops again x
Meeden is so good
I agree Maggie! I really like their palettes x
I disagree with you on the cotman set. The colors are patchy. RS is much better value! Van Gogh is absolutely a better choice as well!!
Thank you for sharing Nathalie
