Nobody Visits This Country...Find Out Why

  • 🇲🇩 Moldova is the least visited country in Europe. And so I came to its capital city Kishinev to see why...It did not take long to find the answer. Years of theft and corruption by politicians has left the locals of the country tripping up on broken pavements and walking past abandoned buildings on their way to collect their 40 Euro pensions.

I mean there are a few improvements, like they demolished most abandoned buildings and are working on renovating most of the city (this time fr). I left it a year ago an still visit frequently, since most my family and friends are there. In general it is a nice country but it is pretty scary walking down the streets alone, no matter if its night or day and no matter your age. Political opinions didn’t really change, it is still divided between the people who want to unite with Russia and people who want to join in on the EU.

As they are not used to tourists, a lot of people would approach you and start having a conversation. The best thing was when a family invited me over for celebrating Easter Sunday at their parents home in the countryside. But it‘s true, most people in Moldova hope that their kids make it out of the country because there are really no opportunities in the country. I wish the people of Moldova that things will get better soon.

      This guy is really a showman. He did not show the main streets the church, the Parliament area, museums, embassies area, the parks. It's just selected some horrible delerict places to make videos on and keep saying how how good Russia is. He does not know that almost half a million people were sent by beautiful Russia to Siberia to squash and kill any unrest and even today with Transnistria they keep Russian army at 60 minutes from Chisinau (the capital) in Transnistria and if you dare to sat anything bad about the Russians army you can get more than a half a decade of prison time for starters. If he had any sense or backbone he would ride the bus from Transnistria to Moldova and see how people go daily from the Russian frozen conflict area to Moldova (as poor as he screams out it is) just to have something to put on the table.
      There is a saying "You can't talk morals with a hungry man". The country is at a geopolitics faltline between the European Union/NATO and the Russian Federation, the weaker this no man's land(arguably, with Russian army in there) the easier it is to keep it broken and derelict. He picked and chose history and misdirected. The country, Moldova is part of a people - Romanians. The Soviet Union had troops on the border on Romania and gave Romanians 48 hours to leave the country or else full invasion of all the country. We lost it without fighting, which is sad I guess, but we are a small country and the Soviet Union was the other world power at that time with USA. So they took occupied, sent to Siberia or chased away any resistance and by braking away half of the historical region of Moldova from Romania they created this frozen conflict - why Moldova can't join the EU and is 4 times poorer than the rest of us Romanians living in Europe. This is why they get passports from us, to have a chance of a better life.
      There are nice places to see in Chisinau and Moldova (and Ukraine) both are dirt poor but also offer a different perspective than you would get if you would visit Italy or Spain. I would recommend visiting Transnistria, its like time travel to Soviet times, a little bit like North Korea (you will like it).

    Twenty two years ago I spent three weeks filming and visiting various political and social institutions in Moldova, meeting with and interviewing politicians, leaders of ‘foreign aid agencies’ and many other ordinary people from different economic backgrounds. We were largely based in Chisinău but visited numerous different areas around the country, with the exception of the break ways region of Transinistria. Moldova was poor then but in comparatively better shape than in your video, with a good deal of rebuilding apparently going on. What struck me most was that it was absolutely flooded with American agencies, all of whom were involved to one extent or another in encouraging capitalism and western style economic improvements. Outside of the capital (which as I say was pretty impoverished even then) in the countryside, there was utter poverty. People lived in primitive shacks or shabby wooden cottages, with horse and cart as primary transport. The politicians we spoke to were largely under the thrall of the Americans and it all felt like a bit like a soft Western coup, aimed at persuading the people in charge of the few economic assets within Moldova of the virtues of the Western system. It was depressing to see in your film how much worse things have become since then. I liked the Moldovans very much and it’s hard not to conclude that like many areas of the old Soviet Union, they were badly let down by an alternative capitalist system that promised them so much, but failed to deliver anything other than enabling the exportation of the wealth of the corrupt into Western banks.

    • @alexandernovikov5963
      @alexandernovikov5963 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the 90-00s, it was about the same in Russia. You can't even imagine how much has been destroyed, literally sawn into scrap metal. All this was created within the framework of a single Soviet country and economy. Since then, all ties have been severed, and within the framework of world capitalism, a lot has become unprofitable. As a result, stealing or sawing for metal was often much easier and more profitable. Approximately 20-30 million former Soviet people paid with their lives for this transition to capitalism (that is, a step back in the development of society). Chisinau and Moldova are one of the illustrative examples of the existence of a previously more developed civilization.

    • @williedowling5682
      @williedowling5682 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexandernovikov5963 It's seems that the West deliberately tempted Soviet countries with promises of freedom, Coca-Cola, MTV life-style, and a better standard of living for all, when in fact all they they mostly did was to asset-strip and make a handful of corruptible local businessmen and politicians wealthy, by getting them to agree to exploit local resources and people, and then funnel profits back into Western banks. I guess it would be mostly the USA doing this by virtue of their power and wealth, but their allies in the UK and Europe carry a fair degree of responsibility too.

    • @haydrygos8905
      @haydrygos8905 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williedowling5682yeah definitely that’s why they link the issues that happened in the Soviet Union to socialism when those issues had nothing to do with socialism and could have easily happened in a capitalist society, possibly even worse since there are more deaths due to capitalism than socialism ever did. The USSR should have never dissolved it would have been better off the way it was, it’s the same with developing countries being encouraged by the west to have free markets when it’s only MNC’s benefitting, hence the USA imposes sanctions and goes to war with socialist countries such as Cuba.

      @@juanrescudero7271 in 1918 we were all united, but then split under Ribbentrop-Molotov. I as a Romanian consider them compatriots, same culture. I have Moldavian friends and they also think the same and would love to unite any day of the week(like many Romanians do), but on the other side of the Prut it's a bit more tangled. For one, there are still minorities that appeared during the USSR and that don't want it. Many don't want it because of political reasons and consequences and how hard it would be to merge. Some people, mostly that use Russian as their main language(even though theoretically Romanian is the official language. Moldova has its own dialect just to make it clear) want unification with Russia. Moldova is caught in the middle. Stats say that 55% don't want to unite(someone said in an interview "even though I would love to unite with the motherland, I am afraid about ruining our relationship with Russia". Consider that they are near Russia and it wouldn't take long for Russia to do something about it). Back to the stats, 25% say that they want to unite no matter what and the rest can't decide. Even though many consider we are the same people and culture not all are looking forward to this. There are also some that feel that they wouldn't fit well under Romania. Consider that under USSR people moved around the country and not only the older Moldavians remaining in the area. Also some Moldavians just would rather be independent. So even if many would like to, even some are undecided because of consequences.
