Stayed in Moldovan villages myself. Same experience. You were wondering what life was back then... grown up in East Germany, I understand a good part of it. Respect.
This brings back so many memories of my trips to the villages in Ukraine and Kazakhstan in the past. You are correct when you say the people are very friendly in the villages. Thanks for the memory.

I found out through trying to find her on facebook that she passed from brain cancer in 2012 though. Her parents were apparently deeply touched that I had been trying to find her though
You are bringing up some memories, even though only slightly related. I played correspondence chess against a guy from Georgia. He wanted some albums (from the group "Kansas") he couldn't get over there, so I bought them and wanted to send them to him. After the fall of the Soviet Union I didn't hear from him anymore. Later got news that he perished in the post Soviet chaos - no civil war, nothing else, just was randomly murdered by some people when order broke down and they may have thought he had some money on him or whatever. Still have the records in their original packaging. They moved with me three times. I don't dare open, I promised to send them to Aleksey. They have a special place in my vinyl collection of olden times. One of them seems to be bent out of shape, dunno how I'll ever explain that.
