- I got this axe from Thracian Forge on Etsy. It's a great axe, quality steel, interesting shape, and makes a decent carver. Be careful with the handle shape, the pointed heel makes a great shaping axe, but needs consideration and a special handle.

I know I read somewhere that using oak directly in contact with steel will promote rust due to the tannic acid in oak. I think that was more applicable to knife scales, though. I still made a knife with oak scales several years ago, and haven't noticed any rust issues (the steel was from a broken leaf spring, so probably 5160). I always enjoy your content, and would probably buy some of your handle treatment as long as it isn't crazy expensive.
Thanks for the comment! Oak will definitely stain in contact with steel. I haven’t noticed any significant issues with rust at this point, just discoloration of the wood. It’s a legitimate concern, though. I always treat the handle and inside of the eye with oil before hanging with oak and that seems to help.

Seems like a nice functional design considering the shape of the head. I have always wanted to try carving my own handle. I have a nice piece of hickory and the design drawn, now I just have to build up the nerve to do it.
I really like the shape! Carving handles is great, it’s definitely no racking to get started as Wood isn’t cheap these days!
