Council Tool Jersey v. Gransfors Bruk American Felling Axe- Hewing Southern Yellow Pine
These are both great axes. I note some of the specific design features of each axe and how that may affect hewing and chopping.

Scary Sharp Axe With Belgian Blues, and Fathers day Sale at La Cognee
มุมมอง 54621 วันที่ผ่านมา
From my previous video on the Belgian Blue stones many asked whether the stones are suitable for an axe. Belgian Blue stones are wonderful for axes, and I demonstrate how to put a scary sharp edge on a Husqvarna carpenters axe. Use the code N5RRGLCDVSA8 for the 15% off until Sunday 6/16/2024
Hanging That Bulgarian Axe from Etsy
มุมมอง 615หลายเดือนก่อน
I got this axe from Thracian Forge on Etsy. It's a great axe, quality steel, interesting shape, and makes a decent carver. Be careful with the handle shape, the pointed heel makes a great shaping axe, but needs consideration and a special handle.

Old Hickory Knives- Is this really the end?
มุมมอง 2.2K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
As you may know, Ontario Knife Company has been sold and that includes Old Hickory Knives. I came across some information after recording this video that Blue Ridge Knives may have purchased equipment as well from Ontario Knife Company. This is curious given the seemingly low purchase price of $2.1 million. I will continue to investigate

105cc Stihl 070- Fix or Delete the Governor with a String!
มุมมอง 1463 หลายเดือนก่อน
Working on this clone 070 chainsaw. I discovered the governor activates almost immediately on the RPM range. The governor is connected to the choke, so cannot simply be unhooked. There needs to be more tension added to the torsion spring. One way to do that is to hook onto the torsion spring with a string, and use that to wrap the spring around the governor post one more time. Worked like a charm!

Nice job mate.
I've just learnt a new axe related word - shwangle. Beautiful beam. I'm convinced that hewing makes a big difference to how well a log lasts, compared to sawing. I hewed the sill and door frame and a window frame for my log cabin 25 years ago and they are still fine in the wet climate of west Wales with no preservatives (Norway Spruce). I'm sure a sawn sill would have rotted long ago. The only difference, I used a saw for creating the hewable sections before moving on to a side axe. Unfortunately, I was so keen to get the job done that I ended up with carpal tunnel syndrome so bad and persistent that I had to have an operation.
The favorite of many axe lovers. The Gransfors American felling axe. The Council tool Jersey with Forged in bevels holds its own. But when it comes to precision or carpentry, the American felling axe takes the cake. For around 400 dollars, you too can have your own piece of swedish history. Additionally great video and thanks for the information!
Heck yeah job man !! Wow I’m really diggin that gransfors American felling axe. I too have an American felling axe, but mine is not as fine of an example as yours. I’ll have to measure mine when I get home from work, but it’s quite thick. If I had to take a guess it’s over 25 degrees and I don’t have a file hard enough to cut it to take the cheeks back more. If anything I’ve used it more for splitting or chopping in colder temps. Man I really need to get around to trying my hand a hewing a beam it’s looks like a great deal of fun and very rewarding !!
Been doing some rehandling and custom work on these. I personally use the Butcher cleaver and it's a quality knife with great HT.
The butcher knife is EXCELLENT. Definitely one of my more used knives. Thanks for the input
the Vikings had crucible steel it was just high in impurity's you can check out man at arms they explained how the Vikings made steel.
Bad heat treat. Head was probably overheated and steel gotbgrain growth.
For sure. Seems very likely all that happened
22 minutes to say 3 minutes worth of info.
Take a hike
I've seen some lately with super warped heads and bad run through. Maybe it was a batch issue but oof. Also friendly reminder that the steel GF uses is on par with Council Tools budget line. For the price, buy a Velvicut line axe that's meant for hardwoods 😎
That’s wild. Council tool uses good steel. I certainly don’t need anybody voicing concerns about quality control on their heads
“Best axe”: proceeds to re-do everything. In all seriousness though I love it and would do the same thing. I just restored a 3.5 lb Gransfors from the 50s. The steel holds an edge after so much abuse. It was definitely a lot of work to knock all the rust off and get the handle to fit though. I guess wether you buy a new axe or an old one, it just takes work to get it perfect.
lol it’s a lot of finish work for sure. Axes are definitely a personal tool, I find myself working on axes a lot, whether low or high price range
So your saying you got low thousands of board feet out of a $350 dollar saw? That seems pretty good.
Absolutely. Very serviceable. Granted they were not problem free boards. Lots of breakdowns. But with the knowledge I got from that experience I believe I could take a new g660, replace what needs replacing, and have an awesome saw for very little money
I been eying the Adler Rheinland Axe something to though in the rv to chop wood in the back contrary
It’s a great axe!
My first time purchasing a premium hatchet - I scored the lemon with a bad heat treat; doesn't help the fact that "recycled steel" was used. It's was the Gransfors Bruks Wildlife Hatchet. I was so let down... I waited years to finally treat myself and I got the damn lemon of the bunch. I didn't bother with the warranty and just returned it. After that awful experience I've decided I want the Council Tool Wood-Craft Camp Carver with the 16″ curved handle.
That is so frustrating! The camp carver is a great axe I like mine a lot. I’ve heard from TONS of people about edge issues from the factory. Hoping they sort it out
Get a hewing axe.
Thanks for the comment. I do have multiple hewing axes, and use them often. This was an experiment to see what kind of results I could get with a small axe.
Nice milling and beautiful wood. Looking forward to seeing how you use it. I also enjoyed seeing how the contents of your shop seems to have grown over the years. Good man!
Thank you! It’s been a fun ride. Thanks for checking in I always love hearing from you.
I would not hammer down on the wedge, just small tap , if to deep it will banana the wood
That’s good advice
what kind of vice is that
Thats a Columbia leg vice. Owned by my grandfather, I inherited it when he passed.
Council are the best for throwing too.
They’re great!
Haven’t commented in a while, figured I would. Anyhow, I have a video request. If you have a .22 or a shotgun or any wooden stock rifle, you should do a video refinishing the stock. I bet a lot of people would search for it. I was looking it up earlier and I bet you’d have a pretty good outcome with your thoughts on how to stain and seal up great looking wood! Take care amigo. Glad to see you still posting. Great content. Watched tons of videos when I was dusting off my axe collection
Great to hear from you! That’s a great idea, I’ll look into making it happen. Appreciate it!
@@urbanlumberjack I’ve got an old axe head I’ll send you sometime if you wanna hang it.
An URBANLUMBERJACK in Georgia...interesting job, and beautiful wood...
Thank you! Some cracking on the slabs while drying I’m hoping it yields some good lumber
Where you guys talking about medulary rays at the end?
I can’t recall exactly
All the interlocking grain woods I've worked and dried don't like drying much it seems. Although american sweetgum isn't as bad as they say! Black tupelo is tough.
There’s some cracking on the slabs. Hoping they can dry and become more stable but we will see
I was staring at that squirrel hide for so long before I realized what it was lol
Nice!
Puberty ended. You bought a man's saw.
Hot dang!
Bagus ya bro
Great video.
Thank you!
Well said! I like finding old tools with name stamps on em. Sometimes it bugs you from a collection point of view but it's cool someone valued it enough to do it. Also, cool to see the Vaughan hatchet again, love that thing
Yeah definitely about stamped old tools. Sometimes they ruin the look for sure. I just found a new old stock Vaughan broad hatchet! Will be restoring it and putting it in use again. Good to hear from you Kurt!
Love your videos. God bless!!!
Thank you!
Excellent video! Very sad.
I heard marshalltown ended up buying portions of Vaughan. I’m not sure about whether they will still make axes though. Hopefully they do!

11 Kings 6:5,6...the iron did swim...URBANLUMBERJACK...Mr. KILLINGER and I discussed this a few weeks back...
I also ordered one from La Cognee and I got it a few days ago. I immediately touched up all my kitchen knives and axe and a draw knife. Works great and is a joy to use!
That’s awesome! Those stones are really nice. Best feeling stone I’ve ever used
Makes so much sense. Thank you.
Too true. I have quite a few of my Grandfathers tools and I cherish them.
That’s really special
Agree with all you said!
Totally agree! I like your thinking.
4140 is a chrome moly steel often used for gun barrels for strength, wear resistance and shock resistance. 5160 is a chrome silicon steel often used for springs that has better resistance to peening the edge for that breaching axe. Both great steels.
Is there a difference between the blue, orange and carbon fiber look models? The blue one always seems to be more expensive.
I’ve wondered this same thing myself. I haven’t heard anyone claim there is a quality difference between the colors, I believe it’s just cosmetic
I am from begium and there is even amuch better stone the coticul made from vulkanik dust.
I’ll look into that! Belgium is a country I would very much like to visit. Awesome country
Is it a small chainsaw? Or really hard wood.
It’s sycamore, so not very hard but yes difficult to cut.
Hello. I understand you're discussing adler axes. The pack. What's the brand name, please ?!
It’s an Adler Canoe axe
Most people polish the bevels.this looks good. Try praying wd40 before you swing. I bet it cuts great
Thank you!
Just saw this and buy two. I agree..I prefer and do what I can to buy from Christians. Thanks for the review. God bless you both
Thank you for the comment! I got a few nasty comments criticizing my bringing up supporting a Christian company so this helps a lot.
Im just gonna say, with the size wood your doing your gonna burn up that stihl as well.. need the big big saws with lower rpms and more torque for a longer service life. For cutting and bucking the stihl will last a lifetime but milling is a different animal.. best wishes
Thanks for the Input, I recently picked up the holzzforma g888 for really big logs. On the 661 I am always very sure to have sharp chain, and wait between cuts. Milling is absolutely hard on a saw
You have to secure the log! Both axes are for specific jobs.
sad
I bought one recently and took it camping. I did about 8 hours of bushcrafting projects, and it was still sharp. That's good enough for me.
That’s awesome, mines holding up well too. If it does the job asked that’s most important I think
I sharpened my new Dayton, yesterday. It is sharp today. I used my diamond grit stones to start with and then my hockey pucks. I put a nice bevel on it. What I like about it is the shape and size of the handle. It fits my hands, perfectly. I polished the bit area with 220 and 400 but my arms got tired quickly. I did even up the polished areas of the bit. I have a new wedge for it but have not removed that aluminum wedge, yet. I use my dead blow hammer to seat axe heads and wedges.
Great way to tune it up!
I bought a Belgian blue from La Cognee after your first video, and I'm quite happy with it's performance. I had first heard of them in forums on straight razors. They have people who swear by them for that purpose. BTW, I use a mix of window cleaner, Simple Green, and a honing fluid concentrate from Woodcraft that's labeled Bora. It's supposed to have anti-rust additives. I also use a spray bottle to apply it.
That’s a great idea on the mixture! Thanks for sharing
Happy to know that you like your stone Dennis!
4140 is used in forklift tines.
