  • From my previous video on the Belgian Blue stones many asked whether the stones are suitable for an axe. Belgian Blue stones are wonderful for axes, and I demonstrate how to put a scary sharp edge on a Husqvarna carpenters axe.

Same here. Can usually a decent working edge, but never shaving sharp. That blue stone is impressive.

What a sharp video! I agree with your thoughts about using oil on stones. Have a great Father's Day.

I bought a Belgian blue from La Cognee after your first video, and I'm quite happy with it's performance. I had first heard of them in forums on straight razors. They have people who swear by them for that purpose.
BTW, I use a mix of window cleaner, Simple Green, and a honing fluid concentrate from Woodcraft that's labeled Bora. It's supposed to have anti-rust additives. I also use a spray bottle to apply it.

That’s a great idea on the mixture! Thanks for sharing

That is great to know. I just ordered a couple Helko Werk axes - the pack axe, the 4lbs woodworker as well as the splitting axe. What classic beauties, and worthy of hanging in my living room - well away from the wood burner, of course. I managed to source the Belgian blue stone (Belgischer Brocken) in Germany (I'm UK based). Was hoping the stone you showed in your previous video would work out well for an axe. Thanks for the update.
The Helko Werk axes I chose have the Rheinland design and are similar to the Adler axes, but with nice oiled handles instead of painted. There was something a little more timeless and graceful about the Helkos compared to Adler. To me aesthetics in tools is as important as function and quality. It even makes a job more pleasant. To date I've felled with axe (diagonal cut for the mouth) and bow saw (all horizontal cuts and limbing), but at last caved in and bought a cordless chainsaw to replace the bow saw for the felling cut which is slow and hard work. I will continue to use an axe for the mouth, which I don't find that hard. Also, the sound of an axe echoing in the forest is the next best thing to time travel. Yes, you can put romance into a mundane job.
Btw., why do you use window cleaner instead of water on the stones? Does it have a small amount of slipperiness? Would simple soap do as well, or plain water?

I’ve been looking at that Rhineland patterns axe it looks great. I do use window cleaner, water is fine, but the window cleaner seems to carry away the steel better. A VERY light oil would be good too

I also ordered one from La Cognee and I got it a few days ago. I immediately touched up all my kitchen knives and axe and a draw knife. Works great and is a joy to use!

Just saw this and buy two. I agree..I prefer and do what I can to buy from Christians. Thanks for the review. God bless you both

Thank you for the comment! I got a few nasty comments criticizing my bringing up supporting a Christian company so this helps a lot.

Have you noticed that the blue Belgian can wear away quickly if it dries up when using?

Without lubrication, I could definitely see that happening. What lubrication are you using? A very light oil works well, or I use window cleaner and re spray as soon as it starts to dry. There should be a nice slurry to pull from so the stone is never dry

I’m more likely to shop a Christian company. I use dawn and water on most my stones
