    Terry I adore watching your pottering through life, you've become a British institution IMO. I love how we never see you really, adds to the mystery and style of it all. Touchingly amusing when you mention 'the wife', tea time & what temperature it gives in the garden and the pond. Love your genteel grumbling about the weather when it rains & suchlike.
    Nothing chills me out more that a Wrighty video, just you floating through your ponding world. I guess you must have an engineering background given how you problem solve and get your great contraptions up and running.
    BTW have you ever given much thought to Anoxic filtration? I guess your Bakki would induce Anoxic conditions anyway, but perhaps a dedicated Anoxic filter would be a nice project.... From what I know these filters really round off the entire nitrogen cycle thus depriving the dreaded blanket week still further.
    I am into constructed wetland filters (with pump-out cleaning chambers), intake bays (which I simply net off when a bit full - always fully visible so I always know when to net-out the debris) and bio-falls myself.
    Anyway mate, life is so much better for your videos, so thanks
    Richard

      Hi Richard, Wow! thank you, it's very much appreciated mate. Thank you very much for your kind comments. I hope I can keep on turning out the videos. I really just do my thing and video it so it's not too difficult to do. It's being able to keep finding different things to make a video about can be a problem some times. I don't have myself in the videos as I think I have the perfect face for radio lol. The Bakkie river deals with the anoxic bacteria very well. I use Siporax ceramic media which I think is really good. I've had no algae problems since it matured and my nitrate levels are very low. I do get a slight showing of nitrate but that's expected as the moving bed is producing it. Thanks again mate, take care, Terry.

      @@Wrighty Ah ha so the Bakki river is doing the ole anoxic duty really well, that's great, I hadn't realised that it had made such a difference already. I quite fancy making a Bakki now, I like your design and also that of Adam Julyan here on TH-cam

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to say, I wouldn't run a pond now without a bakkie river on it. It did take quite a while to mature and start working, but that's just the bacteria getting established, which I expected. The idea is, the less air in the water the better. That's why I ran it from my RDF and not the moving bed. Terry.

  • @johnbednarski2169

    Terry, well done sir. You have a gift in mechanical engineering. I have an obstacle to adopting this design. I could locate a device of this size near my pond, but I can’t readily create a shed to protect the RDF from the weather, along with sufficient access to plumb and clean it. . So, as you give thought to RDF plans, I wonder if it would be possible to protect the mechanicals and electrical system within a weather tight enclosure, as part of the RDF, rather than placing the RDF within a shed? Just a thought.

    It's looking great! I know they dont use a lot of water when they run but I was thinking you could probably reduce it even further if you had a sieve on the waste outlet. Would be easier to show you what I mean with a drawing but I cant do that on here so a description will have to do. On the waste outlet you could have a small box with a sieve at something like 45 degrees sloping down and out to a waste pipe. Underneath the sieve could be an opening to allow the water to return to the dirty side of the RDF. Looking at your pre-filter and your box you use with your vac gave me the idea. It might be more trouble than its worth but I get these funny notions from time to time lol

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim, it's a good idea but on my system I have a pre-filter which takes out the bigger dirt, and then it goes through the RDF which filters everything out down to 60 micron. The roblem is if you use a mesh anything smaller than that on a sieve it just blocks the mesh. I've tried it mate. Good thinking though mate. Thanks, Terry.

    Hi Terry. Another very informative video. Love the new RDF, especially the reduced (from the original) size. Couple of questions: 1) does the smaller size limit the size of pond it can used on, and 2) are the parts used in filter generally available anywhere? I live in Canada so would need to source parts likely from different vendors than you do in the UK, if I was to build one, once you make the plans available of course. Thanks.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, There might be a couple of parts that might be difficult to sort out. I will try to look into it. With RDF's they will do any pond, but the smaller drum RDF's on a bigger pond will work harder and be triggering the cleaning more often. So a bigger drum on a bigger pond will work better. Ritchie in the US has just built my old RDF and made a really good job of it. I must add, he did get a couple of the parts from the UK. Thanks mate, Terry.

    Does anyone know the seal is called and where it can be found, the black one on the drum

  • @dkphantomdk
    @dkphantomdk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dont know if I missed it, but suggestion from me !
    Raise the flow alot, so the spray dont trigger that early.
    if you raise it so high that it will only trigger just before the waterlevel overflows the tray for the dirty water, then you will use the most of the drum mesh before each rinse !
    if your trigger is low, you will only use 10% of the drum and it will get dirty to fast and still you will rinse 100% of the drum, raise the trigger as much as possible to use as much of the grip before it triggers..
    ( it makes no sense to trigger more, since the flow into the filter will be the same all the time anyway )

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not fitted to the pond yet mate. I'm just giving it it's first test run in my shed. Your rigtht in what you say, but this is only a test to make sure everything is working as it should. Terry.

    Excellent job Terry. Do you know the max flow rate yours can handle? Do you calculate that when deciding on dimensions or just build what fits your space? I think those big rubber drum boots would be hard to source in the US.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, thanks mate. The thing is with RDF's most will take the flow, but what it does change is the amount it triggers for cleaning. If you have a small drum mesh and a big flow, it will be constantly triggering. that's why with a bigger flow you should go for a bigger drum size. It will trigger less and won't work so hard. take care, Terry.

    • @chrispayne1324
      @chrispayne1324 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried to turn the wiper motor around and mount it direct to the drum through the housing? This could cut down on moving parts and the complexity/cost of it, as well as a cleaner appearance.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, The motor has to be geared down or the drum would turn too fast. The ratio of the motor to drum needs to come down by 8 to 1 at least to get a good drum speed. You could use a power reducer, but 1 revolution in 10 seconds would still be too slow for the motor. Terry.

      No mate, I found Pinnacle very good. I had used it for years, since Pinnacle Studio 7. Then I had a chance to have a play with Adobe Prem Pro CC and liked it, so I thought I'd have a change. I don't do a lot of fancy transitions and things, so it's probably wasted on me lol. But I do like working with it. You'll find Pinnacle very good mate, if you decide to go with it. It's very easy to use. Terry.

    Terry it would be a boring old world if everything worked first time off and hats off to you for just running it untested on camera and not giving it a spin before hand. [ I know that feeling when the lights go out] What's is your background work wise before you retired if you don't mind me asking I started out as a carpenter for 10 years then went to work for the MOD for 18 years then back to carpentry for 12 more and I now work part time as a school technician in Engineering and resistant materials for the last 4 years what they call woodwork now in schools now.

    Hi im interested in buying your plans and building a rdf i was just wondering what is the total cost roughly of building your own

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephen, To build the new PP RDF which is built using 6mm polypropylene, for the parts only comes to around £600.00. you will need a plastic welding gun, which can be bought for around the £30.00 mark upwards. The plans have the full instructions of the build from start to finish, and also 29 videos showing just how everything is done. They also come with a full list of parts and links where to get them. If I can help further just give me a shout on pondfilters@gmail.com and I will answer any question you may have. Hope this helps, Terry.
