I'm making one myself thanks to you Terry, ordered everything from eBay, it's gonna work out around £140 to build against the £250 EA want for theirs. I'm using perforated sheet which I already have so I'll cut two discs to retain the k1 micro. But as I said, I do like your idea of the automatic dump to waste.

So great to see you building and exploring, this is real diy and proper technical exploration!
For the media, have you thought maybe to produce your own with 3d printer? Would suggest not a cylinder shape, to me it is related to the way it is produced spaghetti cut, but star shape, capable of building up an even thinner layer filter.
For water coloration, may I suggest you give a try with tap water instead of pond one, pretty sure you'll see a difference.
What about ozone, come on, give a try with not one but two other cylinders -> ozone with skimming injector then UV neutraliser.
Sure you'll get amazing results and water quality ;-)

The air should come on for 30 seconds before the drain cycle, not just during the drain cycle. I think you could achieve a similar thing in a simpler way. Pump feed the water from the bottom up constantly, at the top have 2 overflows. One slightly higher than the other, place the control valve on the lower overflow. The lower overflow returns to system, higher overly drains to waste. When the clean cycle starts the lower overflow is blocked by the control valve, water lever rises to higher overflow and drains to waste, after a set time the control valve opens and system returns to normal. The timer would need two outputs one for the air pump and the other for the control valve. Both would initiate at the same time, the air pump would stop a set time before the control valve opened to ensure full dirty water purge before the control valve opens.

Hi Adam, your looking to turn 2 items on and off at different times. that couldn't be done with the switch I have. I think you'd be looking for something programmable. The switch I have only has one relay to work with. Also, I'm not too sure about the media. If the pump was left running it might keep the media at the top and I'm not sure it would circulate well as it's trying to float anyway. Thank for the suggestion mate. I will give it some more thought. take care, Terry.

Hi Keith, Thank you for your kind comments. I put around half of a 25 ltr bag in the first one I built, and without thinking, I put that in this one, but this chamber is a bit smaller. So I've go a bit too much in this one. I have a 6500 lph pond pump on it, but it's not getting that sort of flow, because it's having to lift the water well over 1 metre high in the chamber. thanks mate and take care, Terry.

Hi Aaron, I do get ask this many times, but unfortunately I don't build the filters for people. I do sell the plans on how to build the filters on my website: diypondfilters.com
They are the full instructions on how to build the filter with videos and a list of parts and links. I hope this helps mate, Thanks, Terry.
