A couple slices would always break up and she would use those for the base of the gravy. She would add some butter to the pam and a few tablespoons of the seasoned flour and brown that with the broken tomato slices. She would then add milk until it was a thin gravy. Tomato gravy without the sugar is good on boiled or fried Arsh (Irish white) potatoes with a sprinkle of chopped bacon and a little cheese. ( Note: Never called white potatoes Arsh until listening to Celebrating Appalachia. Love the word. )
I've never heard it either but I always use it now as I think it sounds so cool to me and a good way to tell the difference between them and the sweet potato.

My momma made this exact recipe using butter as the fat but she called it stewed tomatoes. We used it just like gravy to slather over meat (especially sausage patties), eggs, potatoes, and whatever bread was being served. I LOVE cathead biscuits! 😋 ❤
Big city folk will pay you top dollar for the privilege of eating supper at your table . Its a real thing and highly lucrative !! Sending love , hugs and prayers from Minneapolis.
Hi Tipper. I grew up eating cooked tomatoes and biscuits for breakfast. Mama would open a jar of home canned tomatoes and season them with side meat grease or fatback grease & salt & pepper. Never thickened them with flour or cream. I especially liked it when the tomato juice would run up under my scrambled eggs. My mama said she grew up eating tomatoes and biscuits for breakfast too.
I was raised on tomato gravy! Love it and thanks to me my husband loves it too! We often have it for a quick supper over mashed potatoes when our daughter isn’t home. She’s not a fan. Hope your readers and followers give it a try. So good!
@@CelebratingAppalachiaMy grandmother always sautéed bacon and reserved it, sautéed sliced onions and the flour until soft, and added tomatoes canned or fresh. Once thickened, she added the bacon back in to finish the gravy. It is so good! Probably one of my favorite things to eat on a cold Saturday evening, with mashed potatoes, of course. Never have eaten it over biscuits, but I’m game to give it a go. Sounds delish!

Making my mouth water thinking about it!😂❤ Yours sounds wonderful also!
We grew up on tomato gravy on rice with biscuits and salt pork bacon, pork chops,or sausage on the side. We ate it mostly at supper time. Breakfast, mama made regular milk gravy and biscuits. Your breakfast looked delicious.

My momma made tomato gravy and biscuits frequently when we were kids. As we all left home she always made it for our breakfast when we visited. She used her home grown and home canned tomatoes for her tomato gravy. Now I do the same for my family.
Tomato Gravy! I was just thinking about this. we poured it over mashed potatoes. Same reason, I suppose....excess tomatos! Eggs with sliced tomatoes are fabulous. You have the same enormous baby-head tomatos my grandmother grew! All of ours are small and medium so gravy it is! (we are already tired of pasta) Our eggs are on the counter, our butter stays out. Bacon fat is used too often to refrigerate. (BLT's)

Thanks to you, Tipper, my family now enjoys homemade biscuits. After my terrible time trying to learn how in high school home ec and they were always like a rock, I didn't want to put my family through that. We think they're angels' biscuits!

Oh now you're talking!! This is one of my favorite things to make. Love it with homeade bread or with an egg and bacon. I grew up eating it mostly with buscuits and I like mine thin, too. Just a nice twist on a meal and it's so easy to make.
I have never had tomato gravy, but the way we have had it since I was a child is we pour home canned tomatoes over regular gravy and biscuits. Yum. Store bought canned tomatoes are ok...but home canned are wonderful poured over biscuits and gravy.
My beloved mother was raised Quaker , she mad a sweet tomatoes graveyard, served over Mac and cheese and meatloaf , I enjoyed some in Lancaster PA in a restaurant a few years ago 😋
My maw maw made tomato gravy. She always put the tomatoes in the blender so the gravy would be smooth. It’s really good using store bought canned tomatoes if you don’t have home canned or fresh. We always ate ours over light bread.
We used to make a similar tomato dish except we used crumbled up day-old white bread as the thickening agent. We put a little sugar in it, like you do, and a little cream if needed for consistency. Your breakfast looks delicious!
Alabama heritage here....tomato gravy and biscuits was a meal we had weekly my entire childhood and something i still make today along with potato gravy. I didn't know milk gravy or sausage gravy existed until i was an adult.
I LOVE TOMATO GRAVY. MY MAMA MADE IT IN THE SUMMER WITH FRESH TOMATOES AND IN THE WINTER WITH TOMATOES SHE HAD CANNED. I MADE IT FOR MY CHILDREN AND THEY LOVE IT , YOUR BREAKFAST LOOKS SO GOOD.
you have me craving tomato gravy now. I think it is a southern comfort food LOL. we use tomato Juice. It is good that way to. Like you top on a biscuit or eggs Yum Yum.
I’ve eaten tomato gravy all my life but I guess our version is more like creamed tomatoes. My mother taught me to cook the tomatoes and make a slurry of milk, flour and the sugar and add to the boiling maters. Adding some butter tops it off. I so enjoy seeing you cook dishes I’ve eaten my whole life living in West Virginia. Thank you!! ❤️
Im sure I wasn’t the only one… I was so curious if it was a part of life here back in the day. It really is good. My aunt always made it and would use canned tomatoes in winter, but I always loved the fresh the best.
I was also raised on all kinds of gravy! I don’t think I ever had supper, as a child growing up, that didn’t have homemade biscuits and gravy. My Nanny made the best tomato 🍅 gravy and, just like you, Tipper - I crumbled my biscuits up and put the juicy tomato gravy over them! I didn’t realize how much I missed it until watching you. You brought back all sorts of memories from childhood ♥️🥹. Thank you for doing that ♥️♥️
Years ago when I first started along in my nursing career I was working as a nursing assistant I was probably around 27 years old and this is in Indiana my hometown, I say this only because I lived in Knoxville tn when I was 22 until I came back home and learned a lot from those older southern women thank God for them!! Anyway one of my patients daughter would always bring food in for her mama and it was tomato gravy!! I had never heard of it so when I went home I fixed me some and oh it was so good and I used bacon grease!!❤ thank you for the memories. I’m like you I only buy the little mators or sometimes a couple of roma mators for a salad during the winter but other than that I don’t buy them to eat from the store. Oh the anticipation of watching that first mator turning red in the vine❤

Oh tomato gravy, I would it for a supper on a biscuit, with scoop of green beans with new potatoes. One of my favorite meals growing up. Thank you for sharing.
I have never heard of tomato gravy, but I sure am going to try it! I agree about not eating fresh tomatoes (except Tommy Toes) during the winter, but I do think some store canned tomatoes (and home canned tomatoes for sure) can be tasty-and perfect for this recipe in the winter. Thank you for sharing this. PS I could not get over Granny's picture as a little one that was on Blind Pig, it just make my heart smile.
So grateful to have your cookbook! Awhile back I made your recipe from it for the tomato gravy & had it with your biscuits, from the book also. 😋 Cheated & used can maters from store. 😃 I want to try the gravy on pork chops, also on meatloaf. Like you, I prefer runnier gravies. I need it for foods that are dry & hard to swallow. Thanks for this video! Glad y'all got some rain. ☔
This reminds me of breaded tomatoes which I had as a side dish for meals. Similar in that the bread pieces thickened the “sauce” instead of flour. We usually made it with home canned tomatoes. I still love breaded tomatoes even though I don’t make it often.

That is great! Thank you 😊
you have me craving tomato gravy now. I think it is a southern comfort food LOL. we use tomato Juice. It is good that way to. Like you top on a biscuit or eggs Yum Yum.
Oh gosh Tipper that looks so good. I can almost smell it. 😊🌻Yum!
Thank you 😊
Yep that breakfast makes me hungry great video thanks for sharing 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I’ve eaten tomato gravy all my life but I guess our version is more like creamed tomatoes. My mother taught me to cook the tomatoes and make a slurry of milk, flour and the sugar and add to the boiling maters. Adding some butter tops it off.
I so enjoy seeing you cook dishes I’ve eaten my whole life living in West Virginia. Thank you!! ❤️
Sounds wonderful!
Looks pretty tasty, Thanks for sharing 😊🤤😋🤤😋😊
Thanks for visiting 😊
Yum yum, I like me some cornbread, God bless Granny Wilson
Thank you Norman 😊
I remember, years ago, asking you about tomato gravy. Hee up eating it in Louisiana. In the winter, canned tomatoes work. Looks so good…
😊 thank you for telling me about it
Im sure I wasn’t the only one… I was so curious if it was a part of life here back in the day.
Thank you for doing that ♥️♥️
Love those memories of yours 😊
So glad you got rain those tomatoes are sure pretty🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🫂❤️
Thank you 😊
My Mom made fish gravy. She would pan fry fish and then make gravy with 1/2 cornmeal, 1/2 flour, Matt would love that on his flat top.
Oh that sounds good 😊
Years ago when I first started along in my nursing career I was working as a nursing assistant I was probably around 27 years old and this is in Indiana my hometown, I say this only because I lived in Knoxville tn when I was 22 until I came back home and learned a lot from those older southern women thank God for them!!
I love the tshirt that says, grocery store tomatoes taste like disappointment. Lol
Love that 😊
I dearly love Tomato 🍅 Gravy ❤
It's so good! 😊
@@CelebratingAppalachia yes especially the way You make it look 👀 delicious 😋
@@CelebratingAppalachiaI'm 75, raised in the South. Never had tomato gravy. Not a "thang" in my neck of the woods. I'm definitely gonna try making it. My mouth was watering just watching you making it. I've asked my son to order your cookbook for me for Christmas. Love how authentic you all are. Just like family.
@@judyl.7234 I sure hope you like it 😊
@@CelebratingAppalachia Tipper, I live in Burke Co. NC. down I40E between Morganton and Hickory. So many of your Mama's family kin and customs are very similar to how I was raised. I lost my husband to cancer 22 years ago. Watching Matt brings back a lot of memories of him. Wonderful man, husband and father. He was 55 when he passed and I was 52. Close in age to you today. We just had our first grandbaby. I can see how much you treasure each other and your family. I just love granny and all of you. You are a bright spot in my day. God bless you all.
Lived in the Deep South my whole life and I’ve never eaten tomato gravy. It wasn’t something any of my folks ever made, but I want to make some before my tomatoes are all gone. I can make a good biscuit, so I’m gonna try your recipe one day this week.
Carole I’m just like you..looks like I’m gonna have to try tomato gravy!
Hope you enjoy 😊
Oh tomato gravy, I would it for a supper on a biscuit, with scoop of green beans with new potatoes. One of my favorite meals growing up. Thank you for sharing.
Sounds great!
We love tomato gravy, I add a little basil to mine 😊❤ oh it's good😊.
Sounds great!
I was raised on tomato gravy an we always had it over ice cold cantaloupe. So good!
Love that 😊
I have never heard of tomato gravy, but I sure am going to try it!
PSS I reported the fake FB page. What on earth I think some people don't have enough to keep them busy.! I am sorry for you all that it happens.
Thank you!! We appreciate you!
Oh my goodness, I was waiting for this! Bless you sweet Tipper❣️
Hope you enjoy it 😊
LOL. I missed the fried eggs! Looks great and yes cantaloupe Is fantastic with breakfast.
So grateful to have your cookbook! Awhile back I made your recipe from it for the tomato gravy & had it with your biscuits, from the book also. 😋 Cheated & used can maters from store. 😃
I want to try the gravy on pork chops, also on meatloaf. Like you, I prefer runnier gravies. I need it for foods that are dry & hard to swallow.
Thanks for this video! Glad y'all got some rain. ☔
Wonderful! Thank you 😊
In the winter or months when I can't find fresh tomatoes, I use the canned whole tomatoes. Thank you for sharing your day.🌹🌼🍅🌸🌼🍅
Thank you for watching!!
❤❤❤Everything looks delicious. Great breakfast.
I grew up on chocolate gravy and biscuits and my children were raised on it also
My granny made tomato gravy and home made biscuits. She used coco powder and sugar and made chocolate gravy for desert
Sounds great!
This reminds me of breaded tomatoes which I had as a side dish for meals. Similar in that the bread pieces thickened the “sauce” instead of flour. We usually made it with home canned tomatoes. I still love breaded tomatoes even though I don’t make it often.
Everything also looks so fresh and delicious! Thank you & Blessings 🙏🏽 Seattle kin ❤
thank you Lisa 😊
Don't think I've heard of tomato gravy. But it does sound good! Looks like you had a delicious breakfast.
