'iPhone is made by a different company' Google CEO says to Rep. King

  • Google chief executive Sundar Pichai gently chided conservative Congressman Steve King on Tuesday, when the lawmaker complained about a notification his grand daughter got on her iPhone. 'Congressman, the iPhone is made by a different company,' Pichai responded. Apple makes the iPhone. King made his complaint during Pichai's appearance before the House Judiciary Committee, where lawmakers questioned the tech CEO on privacy issues, data collection, allegations of conservative bias and the company's plans to expand to China.

Speaking of experts, I see that you are definitely not one because if you were, you'd know how these things work.
Google barely makes any devices. Their Pixels and Pixelbooks have a very small market share. That's how Apple tracks people, that's not how Google tracks them.
They track using Google search history and their Google Analytics and Firebase Analytics SDK which are used in a vast majority of apps and websites, on any platform.
Also, their ad platform is used everywhere.
Do you think each app uses their own in-house analytics platform and ad platforms? No, they don't. They use someone else's... and it's Google's more likely than not. Google Ad Exchange and Google Ad Mob are the two top Ad platforms. And Google Analytics and Google's Firebase Analytics are the two top user tracking platforms. Email uses different set of protocols, mostly IMAP and POP3, while whatsapp messaging service uses a custom version of open Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). Basically both have different way of converting the data in a format to be sent and different way of collecting and joining the data when received. There are even more details and differences in these protocols. You can dig deeper into more details using Google or wide variety of books available.

Even if Google open source their search ranking engine, it's not like a random dude can build the data centers to compete overnight. And it's not like there's no open source search engines right now (Apache Solr, Elasticsearch, ...), just that no one is able reach Google scale.
Google can also sell their ranking engine as a service on GCP, and Microsoft can jump in to help with maintenance (like what they are doing now for Chromium), I wouldn't say it'll harm Google.
