    A trick that I used to use when I did oil changes on my cars was to use a small plastic garbage bag to completely encase the oil filter before I unscrewed it. It usually did a good job in catching the oil that would drain and was convenient as a disposal bag for the stuff that needed to be discarded.

    If you use one of the "Form A Funnels" made from flexible green rubber and wedge it up behind the oil pump itself you will be happy with how well it works and stays put. And I totally agree you have to pull the left front wheel to gain access.

      I spent wayyyy to much time under mine because that damn wheel was very obstructive

    it looked like their were 2 O rings on the filter housing .. Did you replace both ?
    thanks! :regards :

    gotta pull the drivers wheel and make the funnel and this job is super easy with no mess.

  • @MickeyR6
    @MickeyR6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Looks like the majority of the oil missed the funnel completely when you removed the filter cap.

    • @chrischeek2963
      @chrischeek2963 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And most of it that would have hit the subframe was on the shop towel (which would be much more important than a funnel that didn't seem to catch much oil anyways)

  • @alvaro4k
    @alvaro4k 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, this looks super easy!! Much better than the German design with the filter and housing right at the top of the engine real nice and accessible.

    Is there a reason you don’t put the used oil in the Amsoil containers? It seems that way you could recycle everything at the same time. The only problem I could see is that it would be more difficult to tell when the containers are getting full. Does Amsoil have the clear gradation marks on the side?

    • @autofanaticcars
      @autofanaticcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      much easier to use the gallon containers trust me on that the smaller ones tip over to easily.

    To help with the oil splash my father bought this thin mesh and installed it about an inch above the drain pan so when the oil hits it disperses and stops that splash.

  • @johnmilner7603
    @johnmilner7603 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If these cars like many today are running with low tension piston rings for more freed up HP, then using a 5w50 weight oil, the rings will have a harder time trying to flex out against the cylinder walls to seal in combustion, thus using more oil due to blow by. I don't know what the owners manual says for the viscosity range during the different seasons or how loose the bearing tolerances are for what oil this baby takes.

    Good video. Have you considered using a fluid evacuator like the Mityvac and siphoning from the top? I guess with the filter still being below, you still need to lift the car.

      dipstick tube is wayyy to small to fit any of my attachments. also with the filter being on the bottom, there's no point in sucking it from the top.

    How much oil were you using before and after Amsoil?

      F355bob it might, the Shelby is bad at oil consumption. What year is your 355 im dying to buy one but so afraid of the upkeep on those cars. Looking for a Berlineta with 6 speed which is hard to find as most cars are convertibles on the market.

    changing oil from the bottom of the car is such an old news. I changing oil and oil filter from the top on my 2012 Audi S4 using oil evacuator, without even changing office clothing. Now that I purchased 2019 Shelby GT350, it's going to be a pain to change the oil on this car. So much for Ford's ingenuity.

    • @autofanaticcars

    Will you be doing a video of an oil change for your new 2019 GT 350R? Also, do you still use Amisoil or do you recommend another brand? I would love to see an updated video of an oil change. On another note, do you plan to put on PPF on your new GT 350R? I just put it on my GT 350 with track pack and reinstalled the splash guards (without the double-sided tape). I used a heat gun to create a bend for the guard, so it will not require the tape. Just using one metal clip at the very top. I would love to see what you are doing to your GT 350R.

      @@autofanaticcars I am sure you are doing it after the initial 1k miles. I waited until 2.2k miles, and I wish I had done my first oil change at 1k or a little less. I saw a lot of metal particles stuck on the oil filter element.

    • @autofanaticcars
      @autofanaticcars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      on these cars i do my first at around 500 then 1500 and then 3000 increments. the first one is the most important since the factor fill is garbage and there will be particles in the oil that sheer off during break in.I am sending the oil to Blackstone that gets removed from the car, if the weather permits might be next week il have a video on this.

    Great idea taking the driver wheel off. I think using cardboard would be easier to cut/shape and shove in where you want it. Also, you didn't change the other Oring. When the torque wrench clicks, you are there. You don't do it multiple times or push past the click. You were over torquing that filter housing.

    • @TrackMonkey327

    • @DragNetJoe
      @DragNetJoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mercedes, BMW, Subaru.... I don't know why all manufacturers don't have top access oil filters. I guess they figure most people are paying to get it done, so why make it easier for the DIYer. At the same time, since most people are getting it done at a Ford dealer, and the Ford dealer is going to charge the same for an oil change either way, why not reduce your labor hours by 10 minutes. 10 minutes times millions of oil changes is a lot of money.

      On my 2011 mustang, I had someone do a oil change for me, they didn't use any cardboard, to keep the oil from going every where. Oil got onto the connectors for the electric power steering. About 20 mile later, every dash light lit up, lost my power steering, and a few other accessories. We tried cleaning the connectors, but it would still intermittently go nuts on me. Finally had to replace the whole lower wiring harness. So no matter what you do make sure you at least use cardboard to keep oil away from the connectors on the steering rack
