You nailed it perfectly Max - and considering that Jason was a real up and comer when he got in the group, it seems like he was trying to make the most of what really was a bad situation. Finally he just realized that it wasn't going to improve. Good on him for getting out.

I love this album. Great riffs, great lyrics, great vocals, great drumming. Ohh, Sweet Ambeer. How sweet are you? How sweet can you get?!
P.S.: Metallica were right about Napster and Internet Piracy. It literally destroyed professional Metal careers of 21st century musicians.
P.S.2: Jason Newsted co-wrote the majority of the 1986 album "Doomsday for the Deceiver" when he was in Flotsam and Jetsam. It's an amazing Thrash Metal album. I honestly think Karma got to him for leaving his former band. He got money and fame in Metallica, but he lost freedom and self-respect. He wasn't cool to his bandmates from Flotsam. Not cool at all. And I think that band could have done even more awesome things, if he had remained. I like what they have done after, but they never captured that essence from "Doomsday".

I stopped listening to it simply because it was not even in the same universe as the first 5 as far as song quality goes, that's it. Their best writing days ended at TBA and I realized I was perpetually hoping for a new album from a band that didn't exist anymore.

before the internet, me and my friends liked it and were kinda baffled when we found out that most people hate it. Honestly, the riffs and the intensity of this album make me revisit it ofte. Sure, it's not perfect. Some songs could be shorter, lyrics better, more highs in the guitar tone, more " produced" vocals...but I still think, it's a 7/10. The hated one should be Hardwired, their only album that offers nothing new or interesting
    This album alone proves that
    -they are not sellouts
    - Metal fans rarely like unpolished, raw music, and much rather would listen to "Pop Metal" like Sabaton

The thing is that this album plays to all of Metallica’s weaknesses (songs are too long, album is too long, lyrics are quite mediocre and broadly sketched, Hetfield’s voice while good is quite inflexible)-with none of the strengths of Metallica’s best work (chiefly the really strong guitar work, the application of an almost jam band-like songwriting approach to metal, the power of Hetfield’s mid-high belts, etc)…really the problems with this album go far deeper than just the snare drum…

I would say that all those albums Metallica made were extremely important for keeping existing as a band.I consider being that an advancement not a downturn situation in their career like most of fans have understood that.If they did make those albums it was likely for giving priority on themselves condition in music industry, then in constantly transition.
So perhaps Metallica were pushed against the wall, strongly forced by industry to self-immolated themselves and sacrife their lives in the name of surviving in a kind of music business purgatory. There was options for Metallica to get away with from there:the smart choice was to make those albums for running away the doom.Otherwise, they got flee from the skilled to move into the fire.

I know the lack of bass is something people criticize about Justice but I think it gives it clear, crisp and cold sound. Everyone says their favorite is Puppets but for me it's Justice. I just love the way the guitars sound on it. It was my introduction to"real" metal and it kinda defined what the genre should sound like to me. Plus I enjoy the long, complexity of the songs. I was 12 when The Black album came out and had the rest of their catalog up until that point. That was the last Metallica album I ever bought and if I knew that's what it was gonna sound like I wouldn't have bothered. Again I know it's iconic but I don't agree with most people who say it's a great album. I think it's pretty terrible actually. I do love Wherever I May Roam but you can keep the rest of it

I agree thoroughly - it made the album sound much more dark and evil. It's Metallica's heaviest album.... I think they thought this one was going to be - but it felt very short of the mark. I was really young during the Napster era but if everyone could just download for free than every artist of any genre would never make another album again….people are so selfish. I love Metallica and I would’ve gladly paid my hard earned money to support their work (first 5 records)

    • @guitarmeetsscience
      @guitarmeetsscience  วันที่ผ่านมา

I like the way you approach that matter. It's true, supporting the artist goes a long way. A lot of people during that time realized that a lot of the artists - really especially the smaller time artists were not making much at all from album sales. That's because the labels have fashioned their deals in such a way that they take the lions share of the money and just give a tiny tiny fraction to the artist. It still happening with streaming as well. So then of course people realized hey - we will go ahead and support them by attending the live shows. And that worked for a time until 360 deals came around, where everything - from merch, tickets, you name it all got into the hands of middlemen again screwing the artist on that front as well. It's a real shame how the industry works these days, but the artists are still out there kicking butt. And it's great that folks like you are giving them support, that's what keeps it going.

The vocals and lyrics were overshadowed by the drums sound, but they were awful.

For fuck’s sake, grow up. 😂 I’ll never understand why people are still so fixated on this album 20 years later. Just let it go.

I don’t understand how after 20 years how you don’t understand what the point of that album was…smh the entire point of that album which it clearly states in the title Saint anger. The point of it was to get all of their anger out because newsted had just left the band, and James were struggling with addiction and Kirk and Lars were struggling with divorce.

Альбом st.Anger не поняли только тупицы застрявшие во вчерашнем дне 😁. Очень крутой 👍 альбом его можно смело поставить на одну полку с ... And Justice For All .

Absolutely right - metallica evolved and has constantly surprised the fan base. And they are still damn good live!

The songs are amazing but they sound like shit LOL try covering any single one of them and I guarantee you they will sound better in proper tuning. I personally love this album more than Load. Load was half excellent, half filler. Fight me.

    More like Saint Suck @$$!
The trashcan snare was truly appropriate for the garbage that album was.
The only thing as terribly pointless as was Stanger is the "film" Some Kind of Monster. I am ashamed to say that I watched it. In my naivete, I actually thought that something was going to happen at some point.

Haha yeah man from one colossal mess up to another. Granted it was entertaining in its own weird way - but it was almost as if Metallica hit their own version of awkward teenage years.
